Am I eligible for a free upgrade to Win 7?

Q: Am I eligible for a free upgrade to Win 7?

I purchased an OEM version of Vista Home Premium 64-bit on June 26 and activated it that day. Does this make me eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7? If so, how do I go about getting it? Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Am I eligible for a free upgrade to Win 7?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Am I eligible for a free upgrade to Win 7?

from what I've read, you have to get it from the manufacturer of the PC you bought that had it on it. You may want to call them and inquire about it. But according to the dates microsoft has supplied, you *should* be elligable

I am currently planning on ordering a refurbished Gateway MD7321U laptop. I checked Gateway's website and the MD73 models are eligible for the free upgrade, and I did not see anything about refurbished laptops in their FAQ, so I assumed it is.

But becaue I am not sure, before I make the purchase, can someone tell me if the fact that the laptop is refurbished takes away it's eligibility for the free upgrade?

A:Eligible for upgrade offer?

I would imagine that it is still eligible, but the only way to be sure would be to contact Gateway.

I purchased my HP computer in 2009 with "Windows Vista" O/S installed. I wasn't aware that I was eligible to upgrade my O/S to "Windows-7". Recently Microsoft stopped servicing "Vista" & I may have security risks. While HP healthcheck, I just had this message popped up on my computer, "Any HP PC preinstalled with Windows Vista Home Premium, purchased between June 26th 2009 and Jan 1st 2010 will be eligible for an upgrade to Windows 7 when it becomes available". I tried to update but it is no longer available. Can anybody help?

I purchased a Windows seven OEM cd from Amazon to upgrade from vista. I'm now wanting to upgrade to ten and the installation using a usb stick gets to the screen where it asks for a product key. The OEM disk doesn't have one.
the install apparently will not proceed.

Is is there a workaround?

A:Is 7 pro OEM version eligible for upgrade to Windows 10?

Just a clarification needed to address your question, lbeck. Are you booting from install USB intending a clean install or just running the setup.exe in the root of the USB to perform the upgrade per se? If only upgrading, you need to make sure your USB has precise edition of Win10 needed to upgrade from your Win7 edition.

If your upgrade went via ModusLink, be patient! They have been hit by delays, caused by the most unpredictable of things - people actually wanting their upgrades to Vista! In the meantime however, download & run the Upgrade Advisor from M$ and make sure all your software and drivers are up to spec

I'm ttrying to get the Windows 10 Upgrade, but after going through some help screen, It's telling me that my product is not eligible for an upgrade.

I'm just wondering why that is. I have Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium SP1 that I purchased with a new HP Pavilion desktop computer. I have a product key. why isn't this eligible for W 10? Any ideas?

thanks,
Carl

A:Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium SP1 Product Not Eligible for Upgrade?

Hello and welcome Carl I don't know exactly why but it does recommend you remove any security suites from the machine before you go ahead.

My own personal experience is that one of my desktops upgraded from an OEM Home version I put on but my Toshiba laptop upgraded but would not go past build 10074 and kept asking me to activate it so it could be purely down to glitches or bugs in the system.

By the by how did you get the 10 as I downloaded the ISO and then loaded it from booting from the DVD? As I said I had an OEM clean install to get rid of all the Toshiba crapware - maybe the HP stuff could be causing the problem/s.

My question involves upgrading a home desktop to Windows 7 Ultimate. I have a copy of Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista Ultimate which are Academic versions I purchased at a discount from my university. (I already purchased the Student Windows 7 edition for my laptop).

**Are the academic versions of Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows XP Professional eligible for the Windows 7 Ultimate Retail Box Upgrade?**

I do not want to purchase the Upgrade retail box version to then learn the Academic version of XP and Vista are not eligible for the Upgrade version of Windows 7 Ultimate. Or will I need to purchase the Full Retail Box version to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate?

A:Academic XP Professional eligible for Retail "Upgrade"?

You are "Eligible" to upgrade from any version of xp or vista - but you can only perform in-place upgrades from certain versions, the fact that they are academic should not matter. But see Windows 7 Upgrade Paths for details about which versions can be upgraded in place.

I don't want to update to W10 yet and I have read that I cannot keep my current W7 installation along with a free upgraded a W10 from the same W7 key.
So, if I do the free upgrade from W7 to W10 and then go back to W7, will I keep the free upgrade on this PC if I install W10 after the summer 2016 deadline? Or going back to W7 will disable the free upgrade to W10?

Thank you.

A:Free upgrade to W10 and go back to W7: do I keep the free upgrade?

Technically, your license has been converted to Windows 10 license and thus you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free past the deadline.
I saw many questions regarding this on Microsoft Answers too but this remains a mystery as of now.

Hello, I'm Richie. Let's skip the introduction stuff and get straight to business! I've been planning an upgrade on my PC (GPU & PSU wise) Will it be able to run? These are the parts as listed: -Zotac Geforce GTX 1060 Mini 3GB (NewEgg Product Page) (Not SC'd) -EVGA 450W B1 Power Supply (Newegg Product Page)  So just wondering if these will be eligible for my current build and that nothing will blow up?  Thank you!-Richie

A:Will these upgrades be eligible for my PC?

@RichieWhy,Interesting introduction, to the point. No problem, just disable Secure Boot.   The PSU is adequate based  on the previous draw of 65W (GT 635),  your adding just 55W with GTX 1060 (120W total), and you committed an overall 150W increase.

Hi I have a Switch 10 32gb, it seems to be an eligible device. However, I don't receive the icon tray notification. But, in addition, how could I even think to update it to Windows 10 if this requires 16 gb free disk space? I guess this amount of GB was not even free when I bought it! So, how did you manage to update it?  ThanksFabio

A:Switch 10 eligible, but space will be never enough...

I solved with a "radical" solution and i got 18 Gb of free space after installing Win10 and Office. This is what i done: 1) Back up of all my data (documents, pictures etc)2) Hard Reset of my Switch 10 (Alt+F10 at startup, complete recovery option). With hard reset you'll have about 17 Gb free after Win 8.1 recovery. This will be enaugh for avoiding the "not enough space" error during Win 10 upgrade.3) Installation of the only required update to upgrade to Win 10 (KB 3035583)4) Upgrade to Win 10 by using Windows Media Creation Tool.5) Check for Windows 10 activation.6) Make a bootable USB stick using Windows Media Creation Tool.7) Perform a clean installation of Windows 10 by deleting ALL partitions (also the Win 8.1 recovery). (Power button + volume up to enter BIOS settings and set USB as primary boot device, remember to remove USB stick after first installation reboot, you'll not asked for) Steps 4 and 5 are mandatory because if you don't activate Win 10 by upgrading from Win 8.1 you will have activation issues (the product key of Win 10 is not the same of Win 8.1). With this solution you'll lose definitely your software warranty and support (that covers only pre-installed Win 8.1) but the hardware warranty is kept (i had this information by Acer Support Service). If you want to keep Win 8.1 recovery partition you'll have about 8 Gb less (10 free) after installation of Windows and Office. After installation i... I've had many difficulties upgrading my Dell Inspiron from seven pro to Ten. Now that I finally have Ten up and running, it needs an activation key. Apparently in order to keep it running.

I have the slmgr -dlv report attached. What does it tell WRT my eligibility. If it says no, how do I get a good key? My original product key is for Vista and my upgrade was with a seven Pro OEM disk purchased from Amazon a couple of years ago. There is no product key on the packaging or the disc. I used ShowKeyPlus to get an activation key but the windows install says that it is a general application key (or something like that) and won't work.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, it is eligible for activation. You just have to enter a valid Windows 7/8/8.1/10 Pro product key.

A genuine Microsoft product would have come with a product key sticker. You probably did not get a valid genuine Microsoft product that was eligible for you to use in the first place. Microsoft is improving their product key checking.

Hello. I have this PC, it came with windows 8, specs seems perfectly ok for Windows 10 upgrade. It mounts an i3 3220 w/ 4GB ram.Yet the product is not listed in the eligible model list. http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/windows10-eligible-models The W10 advisor shows this info:  I don't know what is going on here. I think "eligible" in this case means "eligible for Acer driver support".  My unoffical opinion (I don't work for Acer)  In other words, if you upgrade an Acer computer that's not on the list, then you're on your own to find drivers.  In most cases, Microsoft will automatically give you the drivers you need during the upgrade.   Windows 10 provides a 30 day rollback feature, but be sure to backup your files and make recovery discs or recovery USB drive prior to upgrading....just in case.   http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29934/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDQ0MTU1ODA... Edit:  So you can click "ok, notify me when ready" and it will let you know when it is ready (Microsoft has all your drivers).Edit2: As to why a fairly recent computer isn't on the list...I don't have a guess.

The system in question is not on Acer's eligible model list, but that doesn't mean that it cannot be upgraded. What that means is Acer will not be providing driver support for the upgrade to Windows 10. In fact I upgraded one of our S3-391 notebooks here for Windows 10 use and it is working just fine.

Greetings,

Mods may want to pin this for easy reference:

Microsoft has provided a compatibility list to determine if your computer running Windows 10 is eligible for the Creators Update. Here is that list:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...puter-is/5152bb37-f95d-48a6-b7b2-ad0d5c738923

While most systems will eventually get Creators Update, older systems, designed with processors for Windows 7 to 8.1 may not. For example, Adom Clover Trail processors, were discontinued by Intel and were produced from around 2012-2014, so those machines will only get fixes up to Anniversary Update. Search online for more details. Computers that were manufactured with Windows 10 out of the box, should be fine.

Microsoft will provide older processors running Windows 10 Anniversary Update with Windows 10 Updates until 2023. For machines that are newer and can get Creators Update, Microsoft will support Anniversary Update until March of 2018. The cycle is that support for a Windows 10 build will be good for 18 months per each release of Windows 10 Feature Updates for the life of the device that runs Windows 10.

It is also recommended that only advanced users upgrade to the Creators Update manually. The automatic update process includes processor and hardware checks before the download happens automatically. You may bi-pass some of those checks if you do the update manually. You will be asked to review your privacy settings, before the update begins.

For some reason, Windows 8.1. downloader package refuses to see my 8GB SanDisk flash drive as a target for creating bootable Windows 8.1 installer USB media. A 16GB Patriot drive is detected and processed properly, but 8GB SanDisk is ignored. The same is true for the Windows 7 USB/DVD tool.

What could be causing this?

When I create the media on the 16GB drive, only 3+GB is used, which means that 8GB drive should be sufficiently large.

UPDATE: It appears that the SanDisk drive is not detected as "removable", so neither Windows 8 downloader nor Windows 7 USB/DVD tool see it as a valid target. There are quite a few reports of that issue on the Net. So, how do I create a bootable Windows 8.1 install media from that SanDisk drive?

A:8GB USB flash drive not eligible as installer boot media?

Use Diskpart
Clean
format fat32

I had a few SanDisk thumb drives that would not work as install drives no mater what I did. I did a little searching and found out there were some issues with older thumb drives and UEFI, I sent them back to Amazon and got newer units for about the same price and have had no problems with these

No, but you would need to re-install Win 8 Pro, then do the upgrade from 8 to 8.1 again. That's why you should make system image backups so you can restore the machine back to the state it was in when you did the backup.

Is there a way to upgrade from Vista 32 bit to 64 bit for free?

A:Upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit free?

Welcome

Yes, there is a free way. If you received 2 DVD's with your purchase, just remove the OS from one machine and then put the 64 on the same or another machine.

If you do not have the 64 bit DVD a call to Micorosoft telling them that you have a key number, but want to switch to 64 bit, it is very possible that they may send you a DVD for cost.

You are only prohibited from using 32 bit and 64 bit, at the same time on two machines, if you only have one key number.

If you could mention your computer specifications then we could narrow it down to whether you Need the upgrade or Want it.

I just found out that i am eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 and that if i register Dell will send me a DVD of Windows 7 to upgrade my system for free.

Now my question is that i know i would back up my hard drive onto an EHDD but i am wondering if say i dont like win 7 or something goes wrong will i be able to boot of the EHDD and recover Vista to go back to what i had before.

If you know please help I really want to try windows 7.

A:Free upgrade to win 7

What version of VISTA do you have?

How do you plan on backing up your system?

Do you have your recovery DVD/CDs for your current VISTA installation?

You might want to consider a reliable piece of imaging software that is pretty cheap; it will take a snapshot of your whole hard drive as it is when you run it. If you install Windows 7 and don't like it, you boot to the boot CD you make with the software and put the HDD back to it's previous state.

I use this software daily and it's well worth the money!

Title basically says it all. I used to be using Windows 8.1, and I upgraded for free. After using windows 10 for a week i got a blue screen that said "bad_system_config_info" and restarting does not fix it. It is stuck on the blue screen after restarting. So, i was thinking I could use the option on the blue screen that it gives me to downgrade to previous version, but I would still like to use windows 10. So, if I downgrade, could I then upgrade again for free? (I am still within my 30 days to downgrade) Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you have any other solution to this blue screen that would allow me to stay on windows 10 and keep all of my files and apps, that would be even better. Thank you!

The initial error that came up while I was using my PC like normal:

Options ("Continue" and "turn off PC" just take me back to this)

Options Under "troubleshoot" option that was shown above. (I've tried a system restore, but it does not work. I have no "system image recovery", so doesn't work. Start up repair doesn't work. So, "go back to previous build" is my last resort, which is the reason for my question in the first place. I would like to downgrade then upgrade back to windows 10, but not sure if i can.

A:Can you upgrade for free to windows 10, downgrade back to windows 8.1, and then upgrade again?

Yes, I believe you can. Windows 10 is free for at least the first year from release.
You can still get the Windows 10 ISO downloade and be able to upgrade using that instead of the downloaded installation files too.

Hi According to Microsoft the Free upgrade program is good for 1 year so it should be free, being tht said microsoft has not come up with a plan to stop free upgrades or charge for it as of now, so with the information we have now yes it should be free but it can change,
