Machine Not Recognizing New RAM

Q: Machine Not Recognizing New RAM

Hey again guys. It seems I show up whenever I have a problem, but never really come back afterwards; it's nice to know that you all still offer to help, and I recommend you to others who are having trouble.

Recently, (as in today) I got two 2 gig sticks of RAM.
I use PC6400 DDR2 RAM.

Before, I had two 1 gig sticks.
I installed both sticks, meaning I should have 6 gigs of ram in total.
They are all in correctly, and the system boots fine. The problem is that the machine only notices the two gigs, not the extra four I've added. It also states in BIOS that there are only 2048 MB of memory in the system.

I run on Windows XP professional;
Asus Crosshair Motherboard
AMD 64x2 6000+ 3.0 CPU
XFX 8800 GT 512 MB (ADE)

I've heard that Windows XP can only support up to 3 or 4 gigs, even so, why doesn't four show up?

Is there some way I have to make the PC notice the new memory?
Or have I done something wrong?

Help please!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This morning my computer is suddenly not recognizing the ethernet port - getting "a network cable is unplugged" notification and it does not light up. I tried plugging the same patch cord into another tower and it lights up immediately and is recognized by that computer. Everything was fine when I left last night - not sure what happened to cause this.

In View Network Connections, I tried to disable and enable the LAN connection but it nothing happened.
IPCONFIG /ALL came up with this:

Host Name: office4-915a840
Primary DNS Suffix:
Node Type: Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection 2:
Media State: Media disconnected
Description: VIA Compatable Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address: 00-19-DB-E7-AF-2D
Would really appreciate suggestions of how to remedy this.

My XP Pro machine all of a sudden stopped recognizing any USB devices that I plug in. It seems that the only way to have the machine recognize a USB device is to reboot it with the device plugged in. I tried the reinstallation of Universal Serial Bus controllers that was suggested in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310575, and I also tried unchecking "allow computer to turn off device to save power" for all the USB root hubs listed in the device manager, but it did not help. Now if I plugin a USB device into a port, I either get nothing at all or a message about the device not being recognize. What else can I try? Thanks!

I have spend the last 10 stupid days, all of which were stupid, trying to analyze what happened.
I thought it was a corrupted windows file. As it turns out, and I have examined my boot log file which I created, this file is a new virus, hxxp://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_157111.htm
which was detected by Mcafee on 5/20/09. I have just updated my .dat file for my virus scan and I'm now scanning, again..... all 370,000 files on my seagate hard drive. This first time I ran the scan, there were about 24 files which were quaranteened. I'm not sure where they are placed.

2. What anti virus are you using? I see you mention McAfee but only in that they detected it (unless you're saying that YOUR McAfee scanner found it).
3. Have you tried booting into safe mode?
4. If its a virus, you know you were infected. Is there a way for you to scan that drive for spyware? (either hook it up in another computer, hook it up as an external drive to another computer, or create a boot disk with spyware scanning on it such as UBCD)

On my Vista machine, which is my main computer, I cannot access certain sites, specifically www.dilbert.com and www.advantiscu.org. They appear to be loading, but never load. G'day all! (first post here!! :P)

Ok..so this is my situation:

I have a server...and i have installed a printer to it - the Canon LBP 3200 - the server is a 32bit machine running win7 pro...anyways...this printer does not have ANY 64bit drivers (which my main machine runs win7 ulti x64) so i am unable to install the printer on my main machine...

I was wondering, is there a way to share it from the server to the 64bit machine without installing any drivers?

Or is there a way to install 32bit drivers on a 64bit Machine?

Or can anyone find any 64 bit drivers/custom 64bit drivers?

:S

Thanx all!!

A:Sharing a printer from 32bit machine to 64bit machine without drivers.

ok so i tried this method: Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the \\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty

But when i make my own port name it says access is denied... :S

But when I'm actually in Windows, it runs as slowly as my old 1GHz machine and sometimes when opening things it has long delays. I thought it might just be Windows being old, so I did a clean install. But that didn't fix it. Now I think it might be one of the hard drives or my cd drives, since at the BIOS diagnostic screen it sometimes hangs at them. Other than scandisk, which didn't return anything, is there a way to find out where the bottleneck is occuring without having to spend money I don't have?

Well, it depends on which OS you have. If it's Vista or XP, then you may want to change the graphics settings so they're lower, because they consume memory.

My problem seems to be the opposite of most people's - I added a Windows 7 laptop to my previously all-XP network without any trouble, simply enrolling the new machine in the existing Workgroup, and everything works fine.

Except for just one snag: from my XP machine I can see every single file on the Windows 7 machine, which raises privacy issues even within a family!

How do I stop this happening, and revert back to the situation I had before, where machines on the network could only see each other's shared folders?

Thanks in advance for any help.

A:How do I stop my XP machine seeing every file on networked Windows 7 machine?

Well, a rough and dirty security fix would be to make sure that "Password Protected Sharing" in the Network and Sharing Center is set to "On." That way the files will be safe but still visible.

Are you logging into w7 with a password?

Create an account below Administrator level with a password and use that.

Theoretically w7 should not allow a drive to be shared, so check all the folders that show the "Share" symbol and set the Share to "Not Shared".

I am trying to help a friend get her new Win-7 machine set up. I used the printer set-up wizard to install a networked printer in the new machine with absolutely no problem. Proved it would print from that machine.

Now, I get a call informing me that her old XP machine, which had been printing to the network printer with no problems, will no longer print. Documents go into the print queue, but they don't get printed. No error messages show up. I did some messing around via remote access, and finally removed the printer with the intention of reinstalling it. Scanning for network printers turned up several redundant instances of the same printer with different names. Some are identified as "invalid" some a "access denied". Bottom line. I can't get any of the selections to install.

On the Win-7 machine I did find a window that indicated that the printer is designated as being shared, but I didn't explicitly set it for sharing when I installed it. Also, I somehow got to a window that told me that for printers that were to be shared with other versions of windows I could optionally install drivers to support such machines. Didn't have the driver disk handy and took the window down. Now I can't even find it again.

I need some help in sorting this all out. Part of the problem is that out there in "network land" there are redundant remnants of previous installations that are being remembered inappropriately. I'd really li... Read more

Hi,
I've checked here and on a couple of other places; many people seem to have similar problems but not similar enough that I've been able to solve it.

I have a HOME workgroup on my Vista machine that is connected to the printer I want to share. I have made HOME the workgroup on my W7 laptop. The Vista machine is able to access folders on the W7 and the W7 "sees" the Vista machine... the network map on W7 shows a "dotted" line from W7 - Vista but when I try to connect from W7 to Vista it will not accept a logon. I have tried using my normal Vista machine User Name and password and even tried creating a new one just for this connection but Windows Security always says "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password".

One of the other sites suggested that Client for Microsoft Networks needed to be installed on the W7 laptop but when I checked the properties for the W7 NIC there was no Install option... does W7 need Client for Microsoft Networks?

All settings on the Vista Sharing and Discovery are on.

TIA

A:Windows 7 machine cannot connect to Vista machine

I finally figured out that it was Vista machine firewall (AT&T Internet Security Suite by MacAfee) that was blocking the W7 machine from accessing the Vista machine.

After I checked the box in Port and System Services to allow RDP access, I was able to access both the Vista computer and its attached printer from the W7 machine.

Here's a strange issue--at least I think it's strange. I have an old application that I've had since I had Win XP. I'm not sure but I think I had it even on Win 98. Even though it's an old app I was able to install and run in on Vista and Windows 7. I now have the pre-release Win 8 installed on VMware Player and I was wondering if it would run in Win 8. So I opened Win 8 and put in the CD, clicked on the setup.exe file and it installed--or so it seemed. It always installed a short cut on my desk top before. So I looked and didn't see it. It was supposed to have installed in a particular folder, but I couldn't find it. I then installed it again and chose to put a short cut on the desk top. But, it wasn't there. The bottom line is that even though I had Win 8 open in the guest, I discovered that it actually instaledl on Win 7--on the host machine even though I installed it while the guest machine was open. Has anyone seen anything like that before? I suppose it happened because it was such an old app.

A:App installed on host machine while in guest machine

When you put the cd into your drive, it fired the autoplay on your host machine and not within your Windows 8 VM. It installed on your Windows 7 host machine. If you had been in the VM, and launched the setup from within the VM, it would not have installed on your host machine. PERIOD.

A:Moving from a Win98 machine to a Vista Machine

I don't imagine there are any software apps with that feature - any of them new enough to work with Vista would likely not bother with Win98. Data won't be hard to migrate, but I don't imagine Win98 programs would work the same on Vista... You will probably have to reinstall the programs - if they are compatible. (My CD burning software, for example, was compatible with XP but caused the PC to not boot when I tried to install it on Vista) Settings are probably going to be a lot different on Vista vs. Win98...

Any advice on how to do this? I have file sharing enabled on both computers. When I view computers and devices from my vista machine, I see my XP machine, but it is showing up as a media device. When I click on it, windows media player opens. It doesn't seem like it should do this since I am sharing more than just media files. In windows media player i get the error, "Before you can access files in this library, you first must have access to this library".

Hi,
I am having trouble connecting from an XP (Home) desktop machine to a Win 7 (Home Premium) laptop to share files.
I have read and followed a lot of posts to no avail.
specifically I have followed the advice in "How to make Windows 7 work with older Windows versions for networking and file sharing"

- both machines are in the same workgroup
- there is no trouble going from Win 7 to the XP box
- on win 7 the network is defined as a 'Work' network
- firewalls are disabled on both boxes
- Advanced Network settings
- Network discovery in ON
- File and Printer Sharing is ON
- Public folder sharing is ON
- password protected sharing is OFF
- Allow Windows to manage Homegroup connections
- the shared folder in Win 7 says its shared (its not in the public tree)
- On folder Advanced setting decurity, 'Everyone' has been added
- On folder Advanced setting sharing it says "People without a user account and password for this computer can access folders shared with everyone"

The XP box is using XP Home which can only use 'Simple File Sharing'.
On the XP box the win7 machine appears in the Network list under the workgroup.
If I click on the machine I get a login prompt!
Attempting to map a drive to the win7 box the same network is shown browsing to the win7 machine does not list any of the shares. (it also does not ask for a login)

Interestingly if I go back to the network and enter the userid / password then I can see the shares... Read more

From you r 1st post I noticed:
'Public folder sharing is ON
Password protected sharing is OFF'

That would need to be reversed or better yet just read this...

I,m new to this development and deployment and am running into a strange problem. I developed an ACCESS db on a laptop. Everything seems ok, it works. I used the Package Wizard and created an installation package. When I installed it on another machine I am now getting errors in the deployment machine that I do not get in the development machine. I seems to be coding issues. Can't load data into field for example.

Why would I get these on the deployment machine and not the development machine? Am I unaware of some way to test the code in the deployment machine? Otherwise how do I solve the problem if I can't deplicate the error in the development machine where I can stop the code and see the problem. I feel like I am missing some trick or secret.

Thanks

A:Errors in deployment machine not in development machine

Once it is deployed you need to run the connection command on the client to connect to the back end database. Are you using SQL server or all Access for the back end?

Last night when shutting down the virtual machine within Win7, the virtual machine hanged. Win7 gave me the option of doing a forced shutdown, which I accepted. But now this morning when I try to re-open the virtual machine (which is powered down) I keep
getting the error message "The virtual machine could not be started. An unknown error occurred."  PLEASE HELP: I have months of research stored in the virtual machine which I need to retrieve. Any suggestions gratefully received.

A:URGENT: My XP-Mode Virtual Machine has crashed: it is powered down and refuses to power up. PLEASE HELP: I have months of research stored in the virtual machine which I need to retrieve.

Hi,

The issue could be incorrect configuration of XP mode.

Trying to rename the . vmc and .vsv from C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines
and run Virtual Machine again.

I have my first windows 7 computer on my home network, and it appears to me I have outgoing networking, but not incoming. On the Windows 7 computer, I can get to the router and the Internet, and can access shared folders on Vista machines on the home network. The computer name "advertising protocol" works as the name of the Windows 7 computer in the "Network" user interface on the Vista machines (the user interface accessed from Network and Sharing Center by 'view computers and devices"), but attempting to access it gets a "cannot access" error, and attmepting to diagnose gets a "cannot find" error. For whatever it is worth, highlighting the icon in the "network" user interface does not show anything for "location".

I am going through this to get shared folders on the Windows 7 computer visible on other computers on the network. Obviously this is not working. Just to recap the configuration:
1) all computers on the network are members of same Workgroup
2) My documents on the Windows 7 computer are shared read-write with everyone
3) advance sharing options show:
Network discovery ON
File and print sharing ON
Public folder sharing ON
128 bit encryption
Password protected sharing OFF
IPv6 disabled
Homegroup stuff either OFF or ON and managed by Windows (but this is irrelevant)
4) firewall off

A observation:
I noticed something funky with MacIDs. the router - when the Windows 7 computer authenticates - sh... Read more

A:Cannot ping W7 machine from any vista machine

Why is IPv6 disabled? You do realize that IPv6 is only used on the LAN and is needed for Homegroups to work correctly. Maybe you were just thrown off by the first picture below which is only telling you that IPv6 is not connected to the WAN because it's not supposed to be.

The second picture shows it as enabled for the LAN.
It doesn't matter much either way unless you are Homegroup, but Homegroup only works with Windows 7 computers. For Vista and Win 7 you need to use either workgroup or public file sharing. You also need to enable file sharing on the Vista machine.

You should not need to turn the firewall off.

Are you sure that you are sharing the correct group. There is a seperate public file sharing settings page but the workgroup and homegroup use the same settings page.

Maybe you were thrown off because there are two settings pages. The third picture is the Homegroup and Workgroup settings page and the fourth one is for the Public file sharing.

I'm trying to send about 1.5m total of multiple files to four win98 pc's from a win98 pc on a home network without domain through open c-drive shares. The sending pc starts to send the files and then errors out with an illegal operation. If I unmap one of the pc's and then send the batch again, it works no problem. It doesn't matter which one of the four pc's I unmap, the process works. But four is too much for it. Can't figure it out. Someone had mentioned MTU, but I'm not sure where to find that setting or if that is even an option really. Anyone shed some light on this problem or point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Zig

A:Batching to 4 pc's from one machine crashing machine

I don't think your MTU settings are your problem. Highly doubtful. However, I don't really understand how you are sending the files. Are you batching to them all at one time or are you sending the files to mapped drive A first, then waiting for it to finish and then sending it to drive B, then waiting for it to finish and then sending it to drive C and then the 4th one after that?

What does your batch file look like? I know it is most likely irrelevant, but might be worth posting.

I'm looking to build a new machine, as mine is well over a couple of years old. I was wondering if anybody knows the difference in between a computer gaming machine, and a graphics machine? I do a lot of graphics on here, but also weill be getting back into gaming.

A:Gaming Machine Vs. Graphic Machine

Everyone i know who does graphics has a mac, (shudder)
and everyone i know who plays games has a PC,

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2282754844569110939&q=mac

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6553260189868317794&q=mac

Heh, i know this didnt help you out to much, but i couldnt resist.

Knowing not jack about graphics, I would think that the better processor and vid card you can get, with lots of ram, you should be able to do pretty much anything. Games take computing power, as do graphics from my understanding, so i would think the higher end rig you can get, the better off you will be.

I can't figure out how to get them to recognize each other and my connection just says "limited."

Can someone help?

Just like you did in XP. Right click on the folder and in Sharing, choose to share. In Network Connections. Set security for 40/56. Turn off Home Group.

Hello,

I regularly encounter the same problem that i can not access or see a XP machine from my W7 machine I could see before in my network. The strange thing is that remote desktop still works. The other way around stll works: I can see the W7 macine on my xp machine.
The only solution I can use to fix the problem is to do a system-repair.
At first this issue appeared after updating ms defender definitions. But yesterday it appeared just after a new startup without any update or change of settings on anything.

I'm completely dazzled about the cause of this problem.
I would like to know the real issue so i can use a proper fix instead of doing a system-repair every now and then.

any suggestions?

couple of quick questions if I may,

1, is the Windows 7 machine assigned to a static IP on your router?
2. what is the IP of the Windows 7 machine? you can find this by opening command prompt and typing ipconfig /all if your behind a router it will probably look like 192.168.1.x
3. Have you actually shared any folders on the win 7 machine?
4. do you have password protected sharing OFF (this can be configured from network and sharing centre>turn off password protected sharing

Win 10 machine has fileshare being accessed by XP and MAC machines without problems.
Trying to connect a Win 7 machine but it insists that the login does not have access to the share.
The login and password are valid. The share and security is open to everyone. All machines are in the same workgroup.
The win 7 machine can see other machines on the net and the Win10 machine can see into shares on the Win 7 box.

So it is just the win7 => win10 that is the problem.

XP and W7 machines were seeing each other via my home Linksys (that was initiated via Net Use command on the XP machine). That suddenly stopped working a few days ago. I brought both machines to a friend, who restored the W7 machine from a recent backup (that was the only thing that fixed this problem when this happened a year ago). He then connected both machines to his Netgear switch and the machines saw each other perfectly, as they had in the past.

I brought the two machines home and immediately once again they do not see each other. Pinging each other times out with no response. But both machines can access internet via the Linksys. And the W7 machine can access a printer connected via the Linksys.

I verified that Network discovery and sharing, in Control Panel --> Network Sharing Center, are all on in W7. I also powered off/on the Linksys.

At this point I expect I have to give up on this ever working again. But if anyone has a suggestion it would be much appreciated.
