Computer Restarts on Shutdown (Windows 8.0) Occasional BSOD During Shutdown

Q: Computer Restarts on Shutdown (Windows 8.0) Occasional BSOD During Shutdown

Hey folks. I would appreciate if you could lend a hand with this issue, as I haven't had any luck so far.

My PC has been restarting instead of shutting down when I initiate a shutdown. I did a clean boot and tried it, as well safe mode, and it still replicates the problem. The BSOD I occasionally get before the restart is KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE

Even though the BSOD doesn't show up every time, I am getting a minidump each time it restarts with the KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE error. I've included the two most recent minidumps for analysis if it helps solve the problem.

Minidump 1: http://speedy.sh/WM23P/092014-21796-01.dmp
Minidump 2: http://speedy.sh/4UXvm/092014-24046-01.dmp

Where do I go from here?
Much obliged for your help,
Faithisreason

Preferred Solution: Computer Restarts on Shutdown (Windows 8.0) Occasional BSOD During Shutdown

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I recently purchased a new computer and have encountered issues with a BSOD after shutting down. This causes the computer to restart every time I select shutdown instead of shutting down. I noticed when I plugged the computer in for the first time/entered windows that a recovered from unexpected error showed up. I've only really installed a few games and drivers for some hardware. So far I've tried going into device manager and disabling various mice/keyboards/network adapters from waking the computer to no avail.

Aside from the shutdown, it may also occur when the computer is left idle, though that may just be from a similar symptom when the computer entered sleep mode.

Any help would be appreciated. Apologies if anything was unclear.

Thanks!

Are you able to disable the onboard Intel video card? If so, please do that and lets see if leaving the NVidia GeForce GT X970 to do the heavy lifting by itself solves the issue.

Occasionally my computer will BSOD during shutdown. Before the BSOD, it will stay on the shutting down screen for a couple of minutes. This time I didn't even see the BSOD - after staying on the shutting down screen, the screen went blank and eventually I just did a hard shut down. When I logged in, I received a dialog stating that the computer had BSOD'd.

-Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64

-Age of system varies: graphics card - 2 months, CPU/motherboard/RAM - 6 months, power supply - 1 year, hard drives/network adapter/cdrom drive - 5 years
-Age of OS installation - less than 2 months, I had the issue on a previous installation of the same OS as well

It looks like you have some corrupt memory.

You should test your RAM using Memtest86+. Let it run until 6-8 passes have completed or errors have been found.

Hello, people.

I am fairly green when it comes to computer, and hopefully you who are more educated on the subject can lend me a helping hand.

It started out about a week ago. The computer shut down while I was playing WoW. I reached down and touched the casing, and it was scorching. I gave it time to cool down for about an hour and started it up again. Same thing happend. I opened her up and could barly touch the CPU and powersupply due to the heat. I once more let it cool down, and turned it on once more, to check if all the fans were working. I could spot no problems.

This has occured a few times a day since then. Both in games, and when just browsing.

Im not quite sure what information to leave, but ill write down what I think you need.
My computer:
OS: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
Processor: AMD FX(tm) -4100 Quad-Core ~3.6GHz
RAM: 8192MB
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series

I DLed CPUID HWMonitor to check the tempratures and while playing I had 65-88įC on my processor, and down in the low 20s while browsing.

Would really appriciate some help on this.

Thanks in advance.

Petter.

A:AMD FX-4100 at 88¬įC. Occasional computer shutdown

Temp max safe temperature according to AMD is 61c for the bulldozer chips. If im not mistaken the CPU starts to throttle after 81c. If you are hitting 88c, you are overheating the processor and theres something wrong. I would suggest reseating the CPU cooler with some new thermal paste to start and we can go from there, however the temps your hitting are far beyond even what a stock cooler on an FX 4100 should let it achieve.

I also notice you say your PSU is also just as hot, what wattage is your PSU and what specific video card do you have?

I have had 3 bluescreens since installing the video card. One was relating to a driver failure I think so I did a reinstall of drivers and looked for any old nvidia drivers i forgot to take out. Now twice I have gotten an error IRQL_Not_Less_or_equal. These blue screens have only occurred upon shutdown and only after installing my new card. Please help

Good evening,

I have a custom build, amd 8 core 16 gig ram..... Do not know what the problem is. Computer has been running fine for 6+ months. Now the computer occasionally shuts down, but the tower doesn't shut off. It stays on but my monitor says "no signal detected." I have to shut off the tower either via the power supply reset switch or pull the plug. Then when trying to restart both the power light and the hdd light are solid. I mess with the power again, and then it will start again. I have not found a consistent method for getting it to shut down. Sometimes its in the middle of an MMO. Sometimes when I log off the MMO. Sometimes while its just sitting and nothing is happening.

Please help with suggestions.

the other day i overclocked my computer:

2500 barton core athlon xp
512 ram
biostar mobo
win xp pro sp2
128MB nvidia 5200
80 gig western digital special edition

i run my pc at 3200+ with no problem...

but i wanted to take it further

so i overclocked it to 452 fsb
2.48 true speed

and i ran it a couple of hours and it was stable, the hottest it got was 45 degrees celsius. so its not like it overheated...

well getting to my problem...

1. while is was running it at 452 fsb
i noticed some pictures had like lines going thru them (well actually only one)
so i restarted because i was goin to clock it back down to a 3200+ but wen i did it got to the windows xp boot screen and the screen went blank with lines running thru it (i know it booted into windows because i heard the sound) well i changed my video card from a 5200 agp 8x to a 32MB pci card and it works fine...

2. the second problem is when i go to shutdown my computer it restarts. y? is it because of service pack 2?

so my questions are as follows :

did my 5200 die because i overclocked the cpu or did it just take a crap.

and y is my computer restarting?

............................... thanx................................................

A:shutdown restarts computer...

Other things can heat up besides your processor. There are voltave regulating circuits on the board that can overheat and die. Also, when you change the bus speeds, depending on the board, you can be effectively overclocking everything else in your system. This includes things that do not take kindly to overclocking.

Long story short you may have cooked something.

I have a Gateway computer which I have had about 2/1/2 years I am running Windows XP, with a Pentium 4 and 768 in ram. About a month ago when I started my computer I got the dos screen with a message saying "windows did not shut off correctly" and the message gave me several options to restart. normally, safe mode and last known good configuration or something like that. I finally got up, I called gateway and they had me boot up using my cdrom with my drivers CD and run a scan on my c drive which it said I had corrupted files and then repaired them. Since them when I go through the normal shut off procedure (start, turn off computer, turnoff). The computer shuts off but restarts itself. I have been in Bios screen and have been to system properties, advanced, start up and recovery, settings, system failure and unchecked auto restart. Nothing has worked. I even checked my fan to see if it was working and it is. One other thing I have a cable modem and if I disconnect the cable modem from the computer the computer will not restart. Any suggestions on how to get this thing to shut off correctly?

After a power supply failure about a month ago, I had a new power supply installed. After this, my computer would restart after running the shutdown program. I worked around this by disabling "Automatically Restart" under "System Failure" in the Startup and Recovery menu. Try this and see if your computer shutsdown properly.

Go Start > Run > Type in shutdown -s and Press Enter.

If this shutsdown your computer properly, it looks like something got screwed up in the registry when you installed Avast (Although, that shouldn't have happened)

Have you tried a System restore?

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Right click on "My Computer" and open "Properties" go to the "Advanced" tab and click "Settings" under "Startup and Recovery". Uncheck the box next to "Automatically Restart" and click OK.

Try shutting of the PC. If you encounter a blue stop screen (AKA the Blue Screen Of Death or BSOD) write down the stop code (it'll be something like 0x00000007f (0x0000000, 0x0000000, 0x0000000, 0x0000000) and any file or driver mentioned and post that back here. A:Computer restarts automatically when shutdown

First thing, search the BIOS for anything that might "wake" the computer, such as "Wake on LAN", which turns the computer on when there is activity on the Network.

Did this problem just start, or has it been this way from day one ? Does it happen every single time, or only occasionally ?

Another possiblity that your computer has a fatal error during shut-down, so while it may appear that it simply "turned off", in fact it BSOD'd and is "automatically restart"-ing.

In My Computer>Properties>Advanced>Startup and Recovery>Settings

Unclick "automatically restart", turn the computer off and report what happens.

Also Check Event Viewer for any Errors that seem to be occuring during shut-down.

This might also be some effect of a malware infection. What is your Anti-virus software and are your definition files updated ?

Hi, first of all thanks for the help, and I attached a full Everest report for my system. (tell me if you need a different report...)

Here is the situation:

I have this computer for +/- 3 years and this problem occured about 6 months ago. I first noticed it when I left my computer running and when I came back (1-2 hours later), it was restarting by itself. It just lets the screen open and then restarts over and over again. Sometimes it's gonna keep looping, or other times (when I shutdown and restart it myself) it's gonna loop 4-5 times and then give me the "Overclocking Failed! Please enter Setup to re-configure your system.
Press F1 to Run SETUP
Press F2 to load default values and continue"

So I press F2, then I can use the computer, but it can then randomly shutdown and redo the auto restart again. I'm not doing anything specific when it shutdowns, sometimes it can take 15 min or 3 hours before it shutsdown.

Things I tried:
-Reformat: I keep having the same problem;
-Memtest: No errors;
-I ran Avast, spybot, etc.: No virus or spyware, etc.;

- I replaced the Cmos Battery and a strange thing happened when doing so: After changing the battery and resetting date&time, The computer worked great, I could manually restart my cpu without having the error msg or loop problem, I tested it all night and it never gave me any problem. But the next moring I tried again and it gave me the same error message...and now I have the same problem (so I'm... Read more

What could be wrong?

My Portege started to crash on shut down two days ago. I tried the following solutions:
- Verify McAfee was up to date ok, tried spybot and superantivirus, no threats found
- Verify disc ok
- Followed up all Toshiba TEMPRO messages to update drivers
- Returned to a recovery point a week ago ok

All works well, I can use all my programs and hybernate works ok untill...... the system wants to shut down

The shutdown window will not disappear
The laptop gets warm, the fan increases in speed and finally crashes with blue screen
The it restarts itself and the cycle starts all over again

The only way to stop this process is to keep the power switch for a few seconds

I ran out of ideas how to solve this, suggestions are welcome

A:Portege R830-10L BSOD on shutdown, restarts, goes to sleep and crash

Obviously something ?blocks? regular shut down.

Last step to fix this is recovery image installation. After dong this you will have clean preinstalled OS and everything will be OK again.

By the way: before you shut down your notebook check which background processes are active and try to end some of them manually, just to see if shutdown is blocked by some of them. If you will be able to find out what is wrong there you can remove certain application or disable any service that can be responsible for this.

Play a bit with all this.

Hi -

Most of the 11 BSODs list NVIDIA video as the probable cause.

1. Update your NVIDIA video drivers -

Code:

nvlddmkm.sys Tue Mar 16 22:00:40 2010 (4BA037C8)
nvBridge.kmd Tue Mar 16 21:31:37 2010 (4BA030F9)

NVIDIA --> http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

One of the BSODs had a bugcheck = 0x124 = WHEA = Windows Hardware Error Architecture - potential hardware failure

Info on 0x124 --> http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-loc...-what-try.html

2. Remove Daemon Tools/ Alcohol 120. A driver common to both sptd.sys is known to cause BSODs.

3. Update your ESET installation to v4.2.64.12 --> http://www.eset.com/download

You need device driver updates. Alienware Support sends me to Dell Support -

http://support.dell.com/support/down...nConsent=False

4. Update all device drivers - chipset (NVIDIA & Ricoh), audio, network. DO NOT download the NVIDIA Video driver from Dell - go to NVIDIA Support per step #1 above.

After installing my new powersupply, every time I shutdown my windows 7 machine, it restarts.

In the event viewer it says "Event 41, Kernal-Power: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post and its about a serious problem thatís really been frustrating me all week.
Whenever I try to shutdown my computer it restarts, Iíve read online how to change settings so that instead of restarting it shows the error associated with this and all I get is a blue screen error saying:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down.

Iíve been having this issue since Monday. I think it may have been caused by the fact that I downloaded the free trial version of the newest AVS video converter online on Sunday because after downloading this program I noticed my computer running slower and I received the google redirect virus (as I was able to work out from the symptoms). I initially thought the blue screen error and the virus were two separate issues that had just happened to occur at the same time but Iím now feeling more and more like theyíre linked.

My situation is made slightly more complicated by this:
I thought that reinstalling my service pack might solve this and thought that in order to prevent a situation where two service packs were clashing with each other deleted my service pack 3 (naÔve, I know), after this I eventually began to receive a blue screen error upon turning the computer on, saying, ***STOP:0x0000007B and couldnít log on at all but I then used the xp service pack 2 reinstall... Hello all. My first post in this forum. Im trying to get help to a ver annoying problem with Windows 8 Pro. My Shutdown button (physical and the one in the operating system) restarts the machine. I have tried few solutions.
1. Make a shortcut
2. RegEdit change the reboot value to 0
3. And checking the main properties of the Shutdown function and removing the "Fast Start" option.

None of them worked. Sometimes my windows is giving me "Light blue" screen where is sad face icon ( ) and said that something went wrong, system need to restart, but that is only sometimes.

when im trying to shutdown, machine calms down, screens went to black but then, restart happens. it is pain and out of my skills.

Help would be awesome.

A:Windows 8 Restarts when trying to Shutdown

Welcome to the 8 forums, good to have you..

Sounds to me like a BIOS option. I know on mine I can tell the BIOS what action to take when the power button is pressed and/or held down. You may have a look in your BIOS settings....

Geeve

There is also a "hybris Shutdown" option in the OS itself, have a look at this article. Might help you:

Hey everyone,

I had quite the confusing issue on my hands. I believe it to be hardware related but i could be wrong. I had recently built a system and installed Windows 7 on it. Everything appeared to work flawlessly. The only issue is if the computer is off for an extended period of time (thinking around 4+ hours) it will reboot itself before it can enter the login screen (although it does make it to the loading screen).

After a lot of troubleshooting, i realized that simply flipping the switch on and off on the back of the power supply will allow it to boot into windows fine. Also, using the repair utility on windows will let me boot in fine too (without reseting the power supply manually i believe).

I thought it may have been a power supply issue but i have replaced it with a higher wattage, high end one and the issue still occurs. The Ram is checking out OK too.

The only thing i can think of is that there is an issue with the motherboard. I assume when the system is off the motherboard still has power since the keyboard light remains on. It seems i need to kill the power to the board completely.

Or maybe this is a Windows 7 issue since its relatively new?

The fact that this only occurs if the system is off for 4+ hours really puzzles me. Besides this one error the system runs beautifully.

I am really at a loss here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi guys,

When I shutdown my Windows 8 PC, it doesn't seem to shutdown, but instead restarts

What could be causing this?

Specs are below,

Thanks

A:Windows 8 doesn't shutdown, but restarts instead?

A couple of things. First, make sure you're using the most recent BIOS for your computer. Second, make sure all your device drivers are the most recent ones for your hardware.

How are you shutting down?
