USB-C to Mini Displayport? Will it power multiple displays for docking station?

Q: USB-C to Mini Displayport? Will it power multiple displays for docking station?

Unqiue situation here. Never thought upgrading my dual office monitors would result in so much grief! Office PC is a 3rd gen X1 Carbon Thinkpad. New monitors are the Dell P2319H. After failing to both displays connected to an old Lenovo docking station they assumed that upgrading the docking station to the newer USB Gen 2 docking station would do the trick. But here's the problem, the dock's only connection to the laptop is USB-C. Which does not exist on this old Thinkpad laptop. I had a USB-C to USB-A cable on me and gave it a go. It powers the docks and all the accessories but of course not the 2 additional displays. If I look up "recommended/compatible" docks for this laptop obviously this one is not listed. The new monitors only support HDMI, Displayport and VGA. Any idea if this logic would work, USB-C to Mini Displayport cable (both male ends)? In my head it makes sense, but not sure if a single Mini Displayport port is capable of power 2 of these 1080p monitors. Otherwise my last option is to try something another dock.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Having received a brand-new P51 directly from Lenovo, i am facing major issues attaching external monitors.Win10 image from factory, all windows updates, all driver updates as recommended by Lenovo companion. Manually reinstalled graphics drivers, driver update using windows does not detect newer ones. Latest BIOS (1.15). Upon suggestion of lenovo changed BIOS mode from hyprid to discrete.I have these two issues from day 1:When i attach a monitor using the right hand side mini displayport, it is not recognized. Monitor stays in stand-by, no sound played, nothing happens. Inserting the same cable into the port of a W540 (Win 8.1) monitor immediately wakes up and can be used up to its full resolution (3440x1440).inserting laptop into ultradock (230W) it only recognizes one attached monitor. BIOS password entry lock was not shown on external monitor when lid was closed, needed to enter "blind" and press enter, only upon windows boot the monitor (Lenovo 27") was recognized. i think after changing to discrete mode now it showed the lock symbol when starting with closed lid. but still no second monitor is recognized. This is the first thinkpad in my history where such basic things do not work at all.I noticed once i had Intel and Nvidia context menu items when presing right mouse botton on desktop screen, now i only have "Nvidia Control Panel" and "nView Desktop Manager" shown. Which may or may not be ok. Lenovo seems not to be able to help - they are quite anxious to get it so... Read more

Just started using the T470 and am attempting to setup dual monitors from my home office without a docking station.  Can I use the HDMI port to connect one monitor, and the USB C port with an HDMI converter to the 2nd monitor?  I'm able to connect the HDMI port to one monitor, I'm also able to connect one monitor using the USB C port with HDMI convertor.  However, when connecting the two at the same time, screen continues to flicker and only the monitor connected via HDMI port works.  Won't detect the USB C with HDMI converter.  Monitors are Viewsonic 2270SMH-LED.

I currently have a total of three displays I can use. The laptop screen and two Lenovo monitors.  One monitor is hooked up with vga cable and the other with a display port cable. I would like to add an additional monitor, but from what I read the vga on the laptop is disabled while docked, so is this possible,  can I use the mini display port while it?s docked for an additional display?  Or can I use the dvi port and get a dvi to vga adaptor or a dvi to hdmi adaptor on the docking station while it?s docked?

As the subject line implies. I have a xps13 running windows 10 and I just purchased a d3100 docking station.
I assumed I would be able to run 2 monitors and the built-in digital display (3 total screens) all autonomously.
I downloaded the drivers and then plugged into the docking station and to my dismay, the monitors are not working as I expected.
I currently have just 1 27' dell monitor connected through the display port. (I need a dvi cable before I can connect the second monitor.)
The Intel HD graphics control panel doesn't recognize that I have multiple monitors. It only recognizes the built-in display. The system display settings do allow my to go into extended desktop mode but it's very clumsy, it won't let me decide which monitor is primary, etc...
Am I doing something wrong?

Hello -  My x220 does not lock into  Mini Docking Station Series 3 that I bough recently. The rubber pads on the battery seem to be preventing the laptop from being docked. Will appreciate some inputs on how I should resolve both the issues or a link if that has been covered before .

Hello I've got an HP Folio 9470m together with the HP Ultraslim Docking Station (D9Y32AA#UUZ) featuring 2 DisplayPort connectors and a VGA connector. I would like to connect two digital screens to the docking station in extended mode. First I have tried to connect two screens with two DP to DVI adapters which didn't work. The screens have only been able to be used in clone mode (showing same screen content) but not in extended desktop mode. Then I thought this might be an issue of DP->DVI converters as the dock might not support this. So I bought 2 DP cables and tried multiple combinations:- 2x DP/DVI converter cable- 1x DP, 1x DP/DVI converter cable- 2x DP native Unfortunately none of the combinations worked in extended mode. The screen setup always falls back to clone mode. Intel Graphics setup menu also just shows selection between one external screen and "Monitor" (which is the laptop built-in screen). It actually works in extended mode only if I use 1 DP port and the VGA port on the docking station. So I can work in extended screen mode like this. But in year 2014 it's simply ridiculous having to connect FullHD+ screens via analog VGA. So I would like to know how to use these 2 DP connectors on the UltraSlim docking station. Even more strange I found that using the DisplayPort connector in conjunction with one of the DP connectors of the dock while docked it works in extended mode. So the laptop is able to handle it. Just the dock seems not to ... Read more

I can't seem to find the documentation I found on a forum but the intial batch of slim docking stations WILL NOT allow 2 dp at the same time.  It is due to the architecture of the of the laptop and the docking station.  In order for two dp at the same time, you  will need to buy the 2013 one.  (I will try to find the product number for you).  Their workaround was to use VGA and DP at the same time, which you have already figured out. Update: Looks like the page is not found, however, the title says it all. http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product.aspx?sku=10731964&pagemode=ca "Alert: Dual display limitations of 2013 HP UltraSlim Docking Station with HP EliteBook Folio 9470m N..." Update #2:  Found it attached.    Can't upload pdf files

Hi  I own a Elitbook Folio 9470m and a 2013 Ultraslim Docking Station. On the Elitebook I run Linux (Mint 18).The Dockingstatioin never showed the BIOS/UEFI output on the Screen. (Screen stays black until OS loads. I found an article saying this is a known problem for some Notebooks and the solution is to update the BIOS. Almost a week ago I received my new P51 loaded with all available components, as did my last Lenovo W530. The P51 appears to be a great machine. My current problem is that I cannot display 4 screens (notebook plus 3 external displays). Since I have used my W530 with 4 displays for over two years I fully expected to achieve the same with an even more powerful Notebook. The new P51 has two 512 GB SSD drives, the Intel Xeon E3-1505M v6 vPro MB CPU, a NVIDIA Quadro M2200M 4GB graphics card, 32GB(16+16) DDR4 2400 SoDIMM, a notebook display of P51 FHD NT 2D MC CS WLWW and the latest Windows 10, 64 bit operating system. Since I received the P51 and its docking station (P/N: 40A50230US) I have connected the three external monitors to the docking station via a HDMI port, a DVI converter to HDMI and a Display Adapter converter to HDMI. The BIOS was updated to the latest and the 256 Mb default memory for the displays was increased to the 512 MG setting. I have also moved the displays and cables around to confirm that cables are fine and only two external displays will be seen at any time. In speaking with Lenovo hardware support, one individual said I needed to subscribe to software support to get the BIOS changed. Later, a second person said that I needed to play around with the BIOS settings and it should work. I have also rebooted the system a few times. Unfortunately I still cannot view 4 displays.  As an IT, Telecom and Cybersecurity SME... Read more

That could be because you are using Windows 7 but is more likely to be because of the video solution your notebook has. With AMD's Radeon Eyefinity there would not be an issue. See the following HP document Updated!http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02948215-6 I know that may not be what you want to hear, but you are likely to be doing the maximum in terms of video output with the notebook's video capabilities. Your notebook has only the Intel HD Graphics 4000.  There are, however, more advanced options available, but they are pretty costly.

I just received my new work laptop, the ThinkPad x280.  Of course, since it is a company laptop, they will only purchase certain accessories (a docking station excluded).  The laptop came with an HDMI to VGA cable to connect 1 display. As I understand it, you can only connect a second display via the USB-c port.  Does this mean I have to use a docking station to connect a second display?  Is it possible to connect a second display without the use of a docking station?

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit and I'm having trouble connecting to 3 via the HP 120 W advanced docking station. I was able to do this in the past without issues when I was running Windows 7. I'm on a ZBook 15 (1st Gen) I know the laptop has 2 display adaptors: NVIDIA Quadro K2100M, and Intel HD Graphics 4600. When connected to the docking station, I usually ran 2 monitors through the NVIDAI via Display Ports, and the 3rd through the Intel adapter via VGA. Now, after upgrading to Win 10. If I boot the laptop in the dock, it says there is an issue with the Intel graphics adapter, so I'm only able to use the NVDIA and therefor only 2 screens. I've tried updating/reinstalling drivers for both adapters but nothing seems to work. Tried versions from NVIDIA, Intel, and from HP Directly. Whats funny is that if I boot up the laptop BEFORE I connect it to the docking station, everything works fine. Once I dock it all three monitors will come up and work just fine. So I do have a workaround, but it is a little inconvenient  Any Ideas what the issue could be, maybe I have something misconfigured in the BIOS? I think I tried changing a few settings related to hybrid displays, but no luck...

Hello,
We just purchased a large amount of Latitude E7470 and E5570 Laptops with the Docking Stations.  These are currently running Windows 7.  The issue I'm seeing is that when the laptop is docked and off, we are unable to turn them on using the docking station power button, we have to use the power button on the laptop itself.  Un-docking and re-docking causes the light to sometimes light up and then we can use the power button.
Is these expected behavior?  It seems to be a pretty big issue.
Thanks!

A:Docking Station Power Button

That is not expected behavior.  What wattage power supply are you using with the docking stations?  I believe the E7470 and E5570 require the docking station to be powered by at least a 130W AC adapter.  You might also want to try updating the BIOS on a test system if you haven't already just to see if that improves things.

Season's greetings to everyone. I have an interesting isssue with the power ON to my laptop and its operation via the docking station. It first started about a month ago. The only way the laptop will turn on is when it's attached to the docking station. The actual button on the laptop does not operate, the only way to turn on is via the docking station power button. I made an interesting discovery last night when I disconnected all cables, including the power cable to the docking station, attached the laptop and surprisingly I was able to turn the laptop ON. Again, via the docking station button and not the laptop button. If the laptop is already ON, and I disconnect it from the docking station then I'm able to use it normally. But, should I take a break from using it, and it goes into sleep mode and I try to re-start it, I have no success. The power light flashes slowly and no amount of pushing the button will either turn it ON nor turn it OFF. It almost feels like the button is not completing a circuit. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks to all. I'm running Windows 7 PRO

I'm in IT security. I have 3 monitors -- it could be 6.

I just want to know if Windows 7 Enterprise has a setting that will allow the docked laptop with 3 monitors to keep the desktop window settings and icons and everything about the layout when in 'multiple monitor mode', and then have a different desktop settings
and layout for the undocked laptop using it's own screen.

Docked with multiple monitors? Detect it and revert to saved layout/settings for this desktop.Undocked with just the simple laptop screen? Detect it and revert to saved layout/settings for this desktop.

Does that make sense?
P.S. Does Windows 10 do this?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer...

I know that I need a 19.5V 65W power supply, however there is several adapters with those specs listed on the website and the compatibility is also only listed for laptops (not to mention some review saying they followed the compatibility lists provided and still ended up with a wrong adapter).I would like some help knowing exactly which product I need to get the replace my lost power supply.

Laptop is on and plugged into the docking station which is "powered".  Connection to monitor / keyboard and mouse is fine, however I'm surprised to see a lower power - plug is soon message.  Isn't docking station supposed to provide power to the laptop?

A:Super Speed USB 3.0 Docking Station - No power to laptop?

Actually, I believe what makes a docking station a docking station, is because it is a device which actually connects to a docking port. Thus the name docking station.
A usb port is not a docking port.
A docking port is a single port which provides many pins so different protocols such as video, audio, usb, and yes power etc. all have their own connections so they may run at their full potential.
A docking port is not a conversion of many protocols to a usb signal, then trying to cram it two ways across far fewer pins.
And seeing as all 'docking ports' as far as I know, do have power connectors in them, I can see how Dell's calling a port replicator a 'docking station' could confuse somebody.
I don't believe it to be an honest mistake either, just deceitful tactics of the marketing department to take advantage of what people believe to be a docking port so they can make a nickel.

Think of it not as a shipping dock, with full access to power, fuel, water, sewage connections, the whole works.
But rather a boat anchor so you can anchor your ship off shore, then take your time waiting on what ever ship to shore transportation boats you can find to cart a limited amount of resources through a limited method.

I have the Yoga 260 with a OneLink+ Docking Station for over an year and working well. I have 2 monitors connected. One DP and One VGA port. In the last 2 months, I keep getting this message "Docking Station AC Power Problem   AC power is detached from your docking station, or the AC power adapter type is incorrect. Connect a 90-watt AC power adapter or higher to the docking station for proper battery charging and docking station operation." If I shut down the system and leave it connected to the docking stations, it charges up the battery. Battery starts draining when Windows boots up and this message shows up.  I use a 90-watt AC power adapter that came with the docking station. For over a year had no problem with it.  I tried to use a second 60watt AC power adapter power connected directly to the Yoga 260 without the dock and it charges Ok. If I connect the Dock Connector with the second AC power adapter connect, it continues to charge the battery and even after I remove the second AC adapter, it continues to charge through the dock connector. Kind of like Jump starting the system. !!! Please suggest solutions as this is becoming a big hassle and the idea of getting a docking station is lost.

I have several Dell 5510 Precision series with the Thunderbolt USB-C adaptor. Each 5510 is plugged into a Dell K17A docking station powered by a Dell 130W power supply. When I connect the docking station via its USB-C connection to the 5510 laptop, I get a BIOS warning that it only sees 95W of the 130W. But the battery charges and the laptop runs. I can turn off the power warning in the BIOS (which is current) but I worry about powering the 5510's Nvidia video card and other components if the BIOS is not seeing all 130 watts.
Plugging in the 130W psu supplied with the laptop has no such BIOS error.
Why does the Dell docking station K17A not see the Dell power supply? Is it throttling it?

Hello I've went through fomrum and internet and I couldn't find a solution for my problem. I have Thinpkad T480s and Thinpad Ultra Docking Station (135W). I can't get latpop charing battery when attached to docking station. When power up/attache to dock I receive following error from Lenovo Hardware Settings:"Docking Station AC Power Problem: AC power is detached from your docking station. For proper battery charging and docking station operation, connect the AC Adapter for the docking station" So that is not possible since the docking station requires power to operate.  I do not know where to go with that - it looks like firmware error in docking station of some driver error in laptop. I've verified BIOS in the laptop and its newest possible. The same goes for docking station firmware. There is no airplane mode enabled. Any syggestions? Thanks in advance.

I get an Docking Station AC Power Problem fairly frequently.  This happens when I'm not plugged in.  I have a docking station, but I'm not using it right now (on vacation), and have rebooted multiple times and it still happens.  I don't know if this is related to the problem I also have been having, where it doesn't reliably go to sleep (or stay asleep).  Any idea what could cause this when I'm not even plugged in, let alone in a docking station?  Thanks

By frequently, I mean this can happen every few minutes
