Windows search function doesn't work

Q: Windows search function doesn't work

I have about 600 gigs of storage space and windows search doesn’t work so I’m a bit frustrated at this problem.

When I run windows search function I get 2-3 recently created files and nothing else. The process of getting these results take less than a second sometimes and it doesn’t comb threw my folder structure the way it used to. I have indexing on and I’ve had indexing off but this does not effect the results. I’m not sure when this problem first popped up but I assume it was about 4-5 months ago when my step dad changed my network settings because of some bad advice from some tech support who didn’t know what kind of system I had.

I’ve tried using “Windows Desktop Search” and that didn’t work either so I uninstalled that. I don’t want to use 3rd party search programs just because the windows search has worked fine for me so far with the exception to this. Any help is appreciated

Preferred Solution: Windows search function doesn't work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently upgraded my 3 computers to Windows 8.1. Only 1 PC (INTEL) is working as it should. The other 2 PC's are AMD based and the search function is acting funny. When I search it gives my the results, but when I click on says I'm looking for DEVICES AND PRINTERS and I search "printers", it gives my the result. If I click on DEVICES AND PRINTERS tab it doesn't respond, but when I click on say my Canon printer's link to MY PRINTER it responds. I ran SFC/SCANNOW and also DISM (Micorsoft actually ran it) and nothing changed. It sometimes locks me onto the Meto screen and I have to reset the PC to get back to my normal Desktop. When it does that non of the Metro tiles works. Micorsoft technician also tried to create a new user account which comes out blank and when creating another account, as soon as you log into the account it immediately signs out of it and don't allow you access. I tried to refresh the pc, but the frustrating part is, it asks you to choose a keyboard layout, but disables all USB and PS ports. Now how do I choose a keyboard layout, unless I have a touch screen. Microsoft really didn't think this trough. Is there anybody that perhaps now how to get the searh to work. Oh I do have searchindex.exe in my system32 folder and in services I stop and restarted Windows Search, but still no change.

A:Search function in Windows 8.1 doesn't work as it should

Problem solved. After Microsoft technicians tried everything and my PC crashed I decided to just redo. Then I found out that a program called Wisecare 365 that I was running on my Windows 8 PC caused all the problems. It went and deleted registry and other files that windows 8.1 need to operate with. So it's no longer on my PC and so far Windows 8.1 is running fine.

A:Search function doesn't work now

Have you checked to see if the search function works in SafeMode?

Have you installed any updates to the current software like your AV program for instance?

Anyway, the first thing I'd try would be to run SFC from a command prompt within Windows XP and see what happens

sfc /scannow

BTW, in reference to the services, I doubt that's an issue. Windows XP will start a service if it's needed, regardless of whether you've disabled it.

When I go to "search" I get the basic box but it is empty. There are no options within the box. What files make up this function? If I can pinpoint what is missing I think I can get it working again.

I search by hitting Programs, then search. Win XP 1 gig ram, 250 gb HD etc. I think a malware program deleted a file thinking it was bad.

Hello Bill

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder.
Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install.
You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder.

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders.
Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View
Check ?Show hidden Files?
Uncheck ?Hide protected system files?

You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

If you have taken anything out of startups via msconfig please go to Start – Run – type in msconfig – click OK and click on the Startup tab. Put a check mark beside everything you see listed there and then please do the following:

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Going to START/Search button then adding parameters to close up search such as choosing "Case Sensitive" DOES NOT WORK. When I pressed Go for the search, all kinds of files popped up in the search such as Realization.doc,
Capitalization.xls, anything that had the letters liz in it when I had typed in the "File and Folder" box Liz (Capital L lowercase iz) and then a space after the z. I have files named Liz(space) ....this and Liz(space)..... that, and that's what I was searching for. But files still appeared that had lowercase liz in the middle of a word like Capitalization. So what's the point of having a Case Sensitive box to check, when it doesn't work! Am I doing something wrong here?

This is probably something that has a really simple fix, but I have no idea why it's happening. When i type cmd.exe into the Windows search bar and open it, everything I type in (like ipconfig) doesn't work, and it gives me the message "'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." It should also be noted that the command line that I'm typing into says: C:\Users\Grant>

On the other hand, if I search cmd.exe, right click on it, click on Open file location and then double click cmd.exe in the System32 folder, it will open and if I type in things like ipconfig it will work just fine. The command line this time says: C:\Windows\System32>

Why is it that I can't just open it up the short way and do it?

For users running Windows 10 Build 1909, (or anyone else with this issue )

Microsoft published a fix for the blank screen search functions missing on February 5, 2020. But some people who might have restarted their systems yesterday may not have gotten it yet. The Registry Tweaks mentioned online can have negative consequences for many users unless they are advanced with their systems. Try a reboot today to see if this resolves the issue. The other related issue of the blank box in File Explorer search has been reduced with rebooting, but still persists from time to time. My tip is to create a shortcut to File Explorer on your Taskbar. Than if you get the File Explorer Search black box, click on your Task Bar File Explorer shortcut, and that makes it go away.

I realise this subject has just about been done to death, e.g. by Lithium on 07-06-2011, but I just have to let off steam somehow - it really doesn't seem to work! Let me explain.

I recently acquired an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop computer, with Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium pre-installed. While I was excitedly making my first investigations of Windows 7, I created another partition, labelled A:, and moved all my documents to it from C:, using the Location tab of My Documents Properties. I do this in order to have data in a different partition from the system files, in case the OS partition gets trashed for any reason.

Eventually, I needed to find a file which I knew existed amongst a certain group of folders. I was astonished when Search failed to find it, and I eventually had to track it down by hand. Since then I have established that Search will not find any files on my A: partition, no matter what folders I specify in the Included Locations on the Indexing Options dialog box. Indeed, if I select Advanced, to go to where I can force a Rebuild of the index, when I come out again Indexing Options will remove any additions I made to the search locations, and reinstate the original (not very useful now) defaults of Start Menu and Users. Even if I do a search from Windows Explorer while sitting in a folder on A: just above where I know a specific file is, Search will fail to find that file.

I have looked through stacks of forums and other help sources givi... Read more

The feature-name option is not recognized in this context.

I was afraid of something like that happening.  So, assuming that the syntax in W8 is the same as in W7--(I'm still on W7.)--there would be an alternate syntax

/Enable-Feature /FeatureName:<name_in_image> [/PackageName:<name_in_image>]
Enables a specified feature. If the package name is not specified, the
Windows Foundation package is assumed. Feature names are case-sensitive.
The question is: which package name do we use?  All of them?  Both with the Language and without?   The unspecified component, the base and the shell ones, all 6?
This is an example of what I am disappointed about with the  /get-featureinfo  and  get-packageinfo  commands.   They give us no clues about how the pieces all go together.
E.g., let's guess that the PackageName which told Get-Features that the State was disabled would be one of your *.mum file that we found for the loop and replace the target command in the loop with:
dism.exe  /online  /Enable-Feature  /FeatureName:SearchEngine-Client-Package
Good luck

Solutions I've tried so far:
Using the Windows built in Troubleshooter for Searches and Indexing. It doesn?t find any problem.
Used the online troubleshooter: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...trypointid=RNP. Turns out it?s just the same that comes installed with Windows, so same result.

Checked sevenforums.com. Another guy had a similar problem in Explorer Search Index Not Working/ Files are not coming up. They didn?t find a solution.

Hi everyone, I've had this problem for the better part of a month now, I was hoping the update from 8 to 8.1 would fix it but no luck.In a nutshell: Windows search for Files stopped working out of nowhere, searching for Apps/Settings works fine, but searching for Files yield no results, not only that, when I enter a file to search for it just sits there without any info on whether it is searching or not (Just says "Files" and nothing more where it usually would also say "Searching...").
I've been troubleshooting this but no one has had this exact problem, here are the solutions I've tried:
- Going to Indexing Options and manually adding the drives I wish to index to "Index these locations" and allowing for a full index. No results, no "Searching" phrase comes up either.
- Using Microsofts Windows Search Troubleshooter which essentially is supposed to fix problems like database corruption and crashes. Part of the fix is it resets the index (so my drives I added aren't in the list anymore), and it says it has Fixed the issues, but upon trying search: I do get the "searching" phrase, but I get very slow (about 25 seconds) and half-assed results (and only when I hit enter or click the magnifying glass icon), it's no longer a list of files in the search pane that starts to list file suggestions in the search pane. It also doesn't find folders.
Finally what I discovered today was in the Windows Features dialog box there is no Win... Read more

It sounds as if System Restore may have become corrupted. You can try reinstalling the feature. Here's how:In Control Panel or Windows Explorer, click Folder Options and then View tab
Under Advanced Settings, scroll down and find "Show hdden files and folder." Check the box.
Find "Hide extensions for known files types." Uncheck that box. Click Apply, OK.
In Windows Explorer, find your Windows folder (usually on the C: drive but not always). Navigate to the inf folder and open it.
Find a file named sr.inf
Right click the file and select Install.

Important: This creates a new installation of System Restore, but it will delete any restore points that you had created previously.

So the 29th of July i went ahead and installed the Windows 10 update. It installed correctly and ran smooth without any problems for a few hours. Suddenly i realized that my Start Menu button didn't open the start menu when i clicked it. Neither did the search button.

I didn't really think about it much and continued gaming with one of my friends. Later that night i tried to restart my pc to see if that fixed any of my issues. Unfortunately nothing was fixed.

Now i can't open any microsoft apps (other than the Health and training app through the Task Manager and then the apps tab). Theres no way to access the settings or Windows Update so im stuck with just using non-microsoft apps if i can find them that is under my HDD.

I've had this problem for quite some time and I think its about time I tried to sort it out.
I have a Toshiba satellite Laptop running windows XP and the latest WMP is my preferred media player.

About a year ago I had a Virus on this laptop that wouldn't allow me to connect to the internet. A friend took me through the steps in the security and the web part of this board and we dealt with the virus.

Ever since the play all function in windows that appears when you have media files in a folder has not worked. When I click play all I see the hour glass briefly but then nothing happens. If I try to select the files I want to play right click and then play all again nothing happens.

I don't get any warning or error messages, its as if the computer is ignoring my request

double clicking on a single file opens it in WMP normally.

I don't know if it is related but when this happened the quick media buttons on the laptop which allowed me to open WMP, play, pause, stop and select next track also stopped working and still don't.

Thanks for your help.

To fix the file playing issue, try reinstalling WMP.

The buttons need special software installed and running. Try downloading it from Toshiba and reinstalling.

Recently I've come across a situation where my computer will boot with no keyboard function. I cannot enter bios, boot in safe mode, etc. However, upon Windows 7 loading I have full function of the mouse. That is until I hit any key on the keyboard, then I lose left click function only. I can still move the mouse, I can still right click with the mouse. I also noticed that caps lock and number lock did not work either.

I figured that maybe the keyboard was bad and so I plugged in a different brand new keyboard and booted up the computer. Everything worked fine. The keyboard worked flawlessly, the mouse had no problems at all.

Restarted the computer to install windows updates, and upon the next boot I once again was left with no keyboard function and then once again no left click function.

These problems only began after a program was uninstalled due to it freezing up during use. (The program was a puzzle game that was purchased and installed from a reputable game website)

I am at a complete loss, and I cannot tell if this is a hardware problem or a software problem or even a virus problem.

Both the mouse and keyboard are USB. Other USB devices work fine, including a headset, a printer, and a scanner.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

I have a strange problem with Internet Explorer.
In some web sites, when I write a thing in search bar and click Enter on my keyboard, nothing happen. I have to press the "search" button on the site.

For example, if in YouTube I write "anything" in search bar and then press Enter, nothing happen. I have to click with mouse arrow on the "search" button.
This happen also in other websites.
I have Vista Home Premium 64 bit. It's all updated, also Internet Explorer.
Before the format of my HD that I made 2 days ago, all work fine.

A:Search function don't work when I press Enter key.

Does the enter button still work, when you are typing something and want to go to another line below? If your enter key doesnt work with anything, then its keyboard fault. If your keyboard doesnt press enter only with the search boxes, try to use the seach with neter in another browser (safari, firefoxor opera), to try to trouble shoot.

I have a Gateway PC, 5 or so years old, running Windows XP Media Edition.

A few days ago, soon after having installed some Windows updates, my wireless Microsoft mouse and keyboard stopped working. I plugged in a spare PS/2 mouse, and in the bluetooth dialog box removed, added, and reconnected both components. The wireless mouse and keyboard worked, but not for long. I then uninstalled and attempted to reinstall the mouse and keyboard software (except that the software apparently had not uninstalled). This did not fix the problem.

From here on I tried so many things, I do not recall in what order. I did a system restore via Advanced System Care, then tried again using a much earlier date. After a very long wait I was informed that my system could not be restored to that date.

I ran Reimage, which reported a moderately severe stability problem with numerous crashes. This program fixed and replaced files, etc, but got stuck while attempting to reinstall Windows updates (during repairs, Reimage removes Windows updates and reinstalls them afterward, but for some reason this last step has never worked with my computer and I've had to reinstall the updates manually). The computer was frozen and I was forced to turn it off using the power button. When I turned the computer back on, I had no working keyboard or mouse, and again had to use the power button to turn off the computer.

I plugged in a PS/2 keyboard and started the computer in bios, resetting bios to default sett... Read more

A:Keyboard has limited function in safe mode, and mouse doesn't work at all

Advanced System Care, which fixed a lot, especially in the registryThe IObit program is just a Registry Cleaner that will repair almost nothing, except your hope - You will never know if it repaired anything -You are better off to remove all Chinese IObit programs and only use proven programs for your computer Malwarebytes and Advanced System Care will not operate correctly on the same system, as both clash with each other Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a proven and trusted program world wide, while IObit is forced on Chinese users as their options are limited.Do you have a Regular Antivirus program that is active and is scanning at all times ??Thank You -

Is there a way to search for a file name (like in previous versions of Widows) rather than searching for anything containing that word? For example,
I want to search a for files with the word 'Pension' in the title, but intead I receive thousands of results for files called containing the word pension as well as those with 'pension' in the title.

A:Make Windows 7 search function search file names only

Feel free but you could also try using keywords in search filters. See this page under the heading "Using keywords to refine a search"

In Windows 7 Pro, if I click on Start and try to type in the search box, the letters take a long time to appear and the search does not work. For example, if I were to type regedit, it would take a few seconds for the type to appear and regedit would not open up. If I'm in Windows explorer, the same thing happens in the search box. They type appears very slowly on the screen and the search is useless. I've ran malwarebytes, Windows Security Essentials, had AVG on the machine and ran it. They don't find anything. Would appreciate help on this. I've done searches for the problem at Microsoft.com and on here but haven't yet found that specific problem. Thanks.

My search feature isn't working. This is the main search that should start with you typing while the metro screen is up. Some time ago it just disappeared. I've tried a couple of things to get it to work, but I can't. Can anyone run me through trouble shooting it?

A:Search doesn't work

Although this fix does not pertain specifically to the Metro screen, you might want to give it a shot and see what happens:

Fix Windows Desktop Search when it crashes or not showing results

Good luck.

Hi, the picture says a million words:

When I click the search option on the tool bar, all I get is an empty space where it is supposed to show up.

It's XP Home SP2

Thanks in advance!

A:Search doesn't work

Just an idea: If you are going to install the new XP Home Service Pack 3 anyway that might solve your problem. It will install if you go to Microsoft Update - the ordinary Update page. It would have arrived to your pc by itself one of these days.

When I do a Windows 7 Search from the "Search programs and files" window all the listed general files yield only a warning box showing internet security restrictions... what does internet security have to do with a Windows desktop search? My Win 7 Search yields only generic folders. Clicking on them gives a security window citing settings in internet security as limiting results display. What the heck does internet security have to do with a desktop search? I also suddenly have UAC markers on some desktop icons that weren't there before. Do I have one problem or more. I'd appreciate some help, please. I have Windows Defender disabled and Windows Security Essentials in place.

I have tried to solve this problem since I first got Win 7 without success. Search simply does not work. Answers on-line say click on start and type in the search box, but when I do, I get nothing. Same thing with Explorer. Typing in the search box yields nothing. None of the on-line answers I have seen address this problem. My windows is up to date.

Hello jetrobert,

You might see if the tutorial below may be able to help. Be sure to have the location and file type included in the search index. If the file has been recently saved, then you may also need to rebuild (update) the index since it may not have had time to rebuild itself automatically yet.Search - Have More Accurate Search Results
