Unwanted e-mail address in address book

Q: Unwanted e-mail address in address book

I know someone told me how to stop e-mail addresses from being added to my address book without my knowledge but my memory isn't what it used to be. Will someone tell me how I can stop every tom dick and harry with something to sell from leaving his address on my book. I now have over twenty addresses I do not recognize and would like to not have to delete them every few months as I have been doing in the past. Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: Unwanted e-mail address in address book

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Unwanted e-mail address in address book

I see you are keeping details a secret, such as what programs are involved.

If by chance it is Outlook Express, you can try this...
OE->Tools->Options->Send Tab.
Be sure this is unchecked Automatically put people I reply to in my Address Book

But they don't normally appear there if you are not opening the emails and clicking reply. So I am unclear how yours are showing up in an address book?

Hi clever people!

I have an unwanted addition in my Hotmail address book that I can't delete.

I have never knowingly given out my email addy, but did receive a few dodgy emails a while back, after a friend of a friend of a friends 'puter was hacked, and a ton of spam was sent bouncing around all their contacts.

Other than closing the account, (I'd rather not as it's my name) any ideas for a fix please?

Many thanks as always.

When I try to save a new address in Hotmail, I find a list of unknown addresses all ready to insert into my contact book. I don't know where they come from and I can't delete them without importing them to the address book first, wherupon a new list appears ready to add. I use Spybot, and Ad Aware, and my Norton antivirus is up to date, but all report no problems. How do I get rid of these addresses?

Last night I sent a message out to one of the Group lists I have set up in Outlook Express. It was a message intended for that one group, but apparently everyone in my Address Book rcvd. the message. I realized this when I started getting failed delivery messages from some addresses not on the intended list.

They came back in pairs from each failed delivery.

I have the 2004 edition of Norton AntiVirus on my computer so I hope a virus did not cause the problem. Another mystery is I received two emails at my work address with the two different subject lines that I had delivered the email with (I only sent one email to my office).

So somehow everyone on my Address book got a message that I only sent to rcpnts. of the one list. Anyone have any ideas how?

how do I send an email to several people in my address book? I know how to make a group but suppose I just want to click on a few names and send an email? I can't seem to make it do that

A:Windows Mail Address book

Hi Mocha37a,

Welcome to the forums.

There are a couple ways of doing this as long as the names are in your contacts. Click on the 'To:' button and a list will come up. Double clicking any name will add it to the To list. Also you can type in the names separated by a comma or semi-colon and Mail will look them up in the contacts list. If you type in just a first or last name and there are more than one possibility in your contacts, WM will offer a list of possible emails for you to choose from. This last bit won't happen until you hit the send button. You can also add more than one auto complete address (the last 29 names you've sent email to) by comma/semi colon separating the names.

I have OE 5.0, and have used it only about 1.5 weeks. Used to use AOL. In AOL, backing up your address book and e-mail was simple; they were kept in a separate folder called "Organize". If you backed that folder up, and subsequently uninstalled AOL, then reinstalled it, all you had to do was overwrite the /Organize folder the new installation created, and you had your old address book and e-mails back. No linking, no importing, etc.

I have read a number of threads on this board that send chills up my spine. Had I not read them, I would think that all I have to do to backup the address books and e-mail boxes for my two identities is to backup C:\Windows\Application Data with its subfolders. If I ever had to reformat my HD, which I just did prior to starting to use OE, I could simply overwrite the .wab and .dbx files created by a reinstallation of OE, and I'd be back in business. It is apparently not that simple (Microsoft strikes again!).

Can someone tell me a how to backup AND RESTORE my address books (including groups) for each identity, and the retained e-mails in each mail box for each identity?

A:Solved: Yahoo email unable to insert address from address book

Concerning my post above: I turned on my older XP computer and I had no problem with inserting an address from the Yahoo! address book.

I compared all my settings in both computers and noticed that I had different settings relating to how pop-ups are handled. XP reminded me that the address book takes the form of a pop-up. On my Vista I had pop-ups opening up (?) in a webpage. That is the page which came up blank. After I have corrected the settings, I no longer have a problem.

A:Can I Transfer my Windows Mail Address Book??

I researched Windows Live Mail and you indeed can import both email addresses and even email from another email client (Windows Mail, Outlook Express, Windows Outlook, etc....)

This is done at least for me by going into Windows Live (I already had on the computer for hotmail) but I believe can be set up when first installing.

Thanks for those who took time to look at my question.

Is it possible for me to retrieve my (Netscape 7.1, Windows 98se) mail and address books from a DVD copy of my old hard drive to transfer it to my new hard drive now containing Mozilla Thunderbird and Windows XP? I find the application data on the DVD, but XP is really throwing me a curve and the Thunderbird import menu isn't helping—either because Netscape is no longer on the drive or because of the two operating systems in question. If it's possible, I sure could use some detailed instructions.

I tried installing Netscape 7.1 on the current drive hoping to be able to transfer application data and then import it into Thunderbird, but that didn't work either--probably because I don't know where to copy the data in XP files which seem to differ slightly from Win98se.

i had a virus last week, which someone on mse kindly fixed (didnt know about here then, so apologies!). i ran scans etc and my laptop was cleaned.

yesterday, i got up to find that i had undelivered mail and out of office replies for emails which i hadnt sent. it was a "shopping" one which was obviously a spam one - it had been sent to everyone in my address book - the top part of the email detailed everyone's details.

after taking advice on mse yesterday, i changed my password on another computer, then ran malware bytes which said my laptop had no nasties on it.

ive tried to send hotmail today, but my contact list has disappeared. Are the 2 events related? is there anything i can do to get the list back?

i run on firefox, have free avg, windows firewall. malaware, superantispy and spybot are all clean. as you have probably guess, i'm not that technically minded. I am unable to post a malaware log, as it won't let me get into it.

thanks for your help.

In the past I've maintained my address book using the built-in Address Book utility that came with Windows. Once each year, I would import my Address Book (.WAB) file into Outlook 2003/XP. (I don't use Outlook for email.) Then I would use the Mail Merge feature in Word 2003/XP to make and print address labels on standard Avery label sheets to simplify address of my Christmas cards.

Since I'm now using Windows 7, and the familiar Address Book utility is no longer available, how can I print my address labels? I have both Windows Address Book (.WAB) and Comma-Separated Values (.CSV) files that contain my address book data. So, I guess I need to know two things:
Which program or utility (preferably free) can I use to print my address labels.
How do I import my address data into that program?

If it helps, I am already a user of Gmail and Google Drive. Thanks.

My workmate sent me an e-mail and quickly learned it went to many people in her address book.

She has XP Home on a laptop and Outlook Express.

She works remotely from me and I can get more info if needed.

She reports that in the TO: box she entered the first few letters of my name and my full name popped up as it always does and she says she sent the e-mail to me as she always does and did not enter any further names or make any reference to the Address Book.

When I received the e-mail, my name was first, followed by many other names. In her Sent Messages box the TO: line shows all the other names.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

She insists that she did not do anything different than she always does.

Any chance Facebook has something to do with this?

I asked her to see if the message went to her entire addressbook or just part of it, and if only part of it, whether there is some pattern among the recipients. She'll report back in a few hours.

Obviously, we need to get to the bottom of this!

A:[SOLVED] Outlook Express--e-mail went to most of address book--

I was concerned that a worm or virus did this misdeed. The email had an attachment and I know that's how viruses are spread so I was very suspicious.

Overly suspicious.

I sat at the sending computer and studied the 'sent message'.

Only about 25% of the contacts in the addressbook were sent the message.

My workmate noted that most of these people had been active in a certain project at about the same time.

....and then I found out she had sent a :cc to herself on her home computer.

....and then we discovered that in her addressbook was a group with a name starting with the same letter as her own name......

....and.....you guessed it, in the cc: line she must have accidentally listed the group instead of her own name.....

.......she was in a hurry to get the task done......and I think we found a logical explanation for the result......

A:Hacked Yahoo Mail account address book

On 12/20, I received an email from a co-worker with my first name in the subject, and the body that read, "hi Joe check this out http:// msn . msnbc . msnbc-news5 . com / jobs /" (spaced added to prevent recurrence). I had not heard from this person in a long time, so it was unusual to get this from them out of the blue. Second clue was the brevity of the email. I suspected it was spam so I inspected the link and mistakenly identified the domain as msnbc, a legitimate website. However, the real domain is the first string before the top level domain, ".com", and that is "msnbc-news5". Anyone could have registered that. I hovered my mouse over the link and checked the actual link in the browser frame to make sure that the link wasn't masked, and it was not. I then thought, I have the latest Chrome and McAfee SiteAdvisor, if there is malicious software, they will protect me, and I clicked the link. The destination website was a work from home scam, I thought it was not legitimate after all and immediately closed that browser tab. Without my knowledge the cross site script (XSS) started running, and from this point on my browser was sending 7 emails a minute to everyone in my contact list. This went on for 30 minutes. It was possibly shutdown when Yahoo started demanding human verification on each email. Or it may have been when I started receiving Failure Notices in my inbox as the script sent emails to bad email addresses. I checked my sent fol... Read more

I have a large number of Groups, each with up to 50 emails - but they won't go to WM.

On the xp, I share my address book with Outlook, so can't export as a WAB file

Help !

Would very much like to have folders like in Outlook Express. I would like to hit the "To:" button and select a folder and pick and choose recipients and then tap another folder and select from it. I need to have my contacts segregated in to groupings like above.

As is when I drag and drop into a "catagory" and hit the "To:" button I get everybody in that category.

There must be a better way - I would buy a dummy book if I could find one.

A:Folders in Live Mail Address Book - Windows 7

Hi Jim, Welcome to Seven Forums.

If your using Windows Live Mail, you need to sign-in with a Hotmail account, use it to store all contacts. It can be deleted if you don't intend using it. Then you will be able to categorize them in groups.

On two separate occasions my Yahoo! Mail Address Book has been hijacked and spam was sent to all the contacts in the address book using my email address as the sender. Each time this happens I have to recreate my address book using the false email, as once the spam has been sent, my address book is empty. I have changed my Yahoo password and run all the preliminary fixes suggested at 'Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log'. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm not really a computer techie kinda guy. I build racing cars for a living and this is driving me nuts...

I know there is built in stuff to do this, but what people don't realise is that exporting an address book to csv etc does NOT include any contact GROUPS - the folders that can hold up to 50 email addresses......

I have 50+ GROUPS I use for business purposes

My old address book (3000 emails) on XP is attached to Outlook, so can't be exported as a WAB file (officially). I am now using Vista premium and Windows Mail.

If anyone has an idea on a macro or script to do this, I would be glad to hear

Windows Mail has started giving me too many problems so I decided to try Opera Mail, but I cannot import Windows Mail contacts into Opera Mail. So I tried Thunderbird mail and it will not import Windows Mail contacts. Then I tried Eudora and it will not import contacts from Windows Mail. Is it possible to import contacts from Windows Mail into another email program?

A:Solved: Importing Windows Mail Contacts (address book)

I am not familiar with the format needed by the other
programs. Check their help files.

Then open WM and click File->Export->Windows Contacts
Choose CSV. Then import those. At least one of the
programs must accept CSV files (text).

I thought this might be malware but I had a scan done on this site ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1015729 ) and logs look clean. Running XP, Spybot Search and Destroy, and AvAst Antivirus... with Opera 9.62 and IE7 anytime I go to Yahoo mail and try to sign out, I can't. It brings me to www.yahoo.com, then if I click on their "mail icon" I am brought right back to my mailbox. Also, when I try to attach a file, when I click "attach" I am directed to www.yahoo.com and can never attach. Finally, when I click on "insert address" while composing mail, I am brought to the signin/password page. None of this happens with Gmail, none of this happens with these accounts on other computers. I think it is cookies/firewall? related but I am no expert. Can anyone help? Thanks!Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:Problems with Yahoo Mail - attachments, logout, address book...more

I suspect that the Yahoo software is corrupt...always my #1 suspect when programs misbehave after working properly.

Once that is eliminated, I look around for unlikely suspects.

A:Address book lost during Windows live mail update

Welcome to Seven Forums joeleighton. Hopefully a WLM expert will come along, but until then.

From what I was able to find, the contacts are located in C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\{b5f3929f-ba60-4632-ad4e-b602b1c8e007}\DBStore

There is a contacts.edb file in there.

I'm unsure if they can be imported if they are not in csv format.

Have a Vostro 1500 with Windows XP. Just installed Windows Live Mail, but the transfer of my WAB to Windows Live Mail, following their directions, did not work properly. It transferred only part of my book, and shows many duplicates (some with same name but different e-mail address).
Tried transferring a second time, and now have an incorrect book of over 1,000 addresses.

I want to delete this incorrect book (without having to delete each address one at a time...does not have a file delete option that I can see), and properly transfer the full book. I can create a new address book file if needed. Any help would be appreciated.
