Are SHA-1 client certificates now unsupported?

Q: Are SHA-1 client certificates now unsupported?

I'm aware that SHA-1 server certificates that chain to Root CA certificates within Microsoft's Trusted Programme are unsupported by Edge and IE11 on Windows 10, as of a couple of years ago.

We have an IIS web farm hosting our ASP.NET systems. The server uses a root certificate that, while was generated using SHA-1, is not part of the Trusted Programme and therefore has no problem when being used to connect to it securely; the problem is that some
of our applications require smartcard authentication, which as soon as they're prompted to enter the PIN, Edge/IE11 kills the connection.

It's as if Edge/IE11 won't allow the transmission of SHA-1 based certificates.

One strange caveat to this is that if I force IE11 to use only deprecated TLS versions (i.e. TLS 1.0) then it works, in that the smartcard certificate is transmitted and used to authenticate. If I force IE11 to use TLS 1.2 then it fails.

Using certutil I'm
able to determine that the smartcard client certificate was generated using SHA-1 and is also signed by the Root CA certificate used on the server.

IE11 works perfectly fine from Windows 7, so I assume the security policy only affects W10 versions.

Did I miss an announcement that this would also affect client certificates? The original announcement made it clear this would not be the case (taken from a Microsoft blog)

How will SHA-1 client authentication certificates be impacted?

The mid-2017 update will not prevent a client using a SHA-1 signed certificate from being used in client authentication.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I have an internal website requiring the user to provide a client certificate to allow access. On my client computer I have installed my user certificate and it shows up in the certificates list in IE8.

However, when I try to access the website I get an 403.7 error in the IIS log (client certificate required). IE doesn't even ask me for a certificate but just displays a blank site.

If I try browsing the website from the same client computer but using the Google Chrome browser, everything works just fine.

I have tried altering the various IE security settings and adding the site to Trusted sites etc. but haven't been able to solve the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:IE8 and SSL Client Certificates issue

SOLVED:

I figured out, that for some reason, when running IE on Windows 7 requests for client certificates must be performed using the "Advanced certificate request" link on the /certsrv website.

I have no idea why, but it works.

We have client machines on IE11 that cannot connect to common websites using https (Facebook, Reddit etc.) because they do not have the Trusted Root Certs installed.
Until 2014 Microsoft released updates to Trusted Root Certificates via KB patches.
Since then they have advised customers to rely upon the process of Windows Update connecting to Microsoft servers to process the CTL (Certificate Trust Lists).
Question 1: Are clients sitting behind a proxy server able to download and process these lists? Our client machines clearly show that they are not able to resolve the update servers, so I assume not.
According to this article from 2014 - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/dn265983.aspx

"The list of trusted root certificates is available as a self-extracting IEXPRESS package in the Microsoft Download Center, the Windows catalog, or by using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). IEXPRESS packages are released at the same time as the trusted
CTL."
Question 2: Where can I find that/any of those packages?? They are not easy to find, evidently I am searching for the wrong thing via Google/Bing/Windows Update Catalog
If the latter does not/no longer exists, how do we obtain new/replacement Trusted Root Certs, and how should we distribute them around our estate?

I was wondering if it's possible configure a Windows 2019 IIS v10 hosted Web Server to perform OCSP checking of client certificates that are used to authenticate?

It is my understanding that typically the Responder URL that the Web Server contacts in order to validate the client cert is extracted from the AIA attribute in the client certificate. But is it possible to override/supplement this with an additional Responder?

For instance, what if I set up an OCSP Responder in the same domain as the Web Server and associated its revocation configuration with the SUB CA binded to the IIS Site. Now if client certs come in for authentication  and have an unrelated OCSP Responder
in their AIA, can I somehow tell the Web Server to check also the aforementioned Responder that has been stood up in the domain?

A:OCSP Based Validation for Client Certificates Using Responder Defined by Web Server

Per a reply from Mark B. Cooper at PKI Solutions this is indeed possible. You must edit the following GPO in order to override the default behaviour of the web server which is to only check the Responder URL specified in the client certificates' AIA extension.
Default Domain Policy > Computer Configuration >  Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > expand Public Key Policies
Once a custom Responder is specified in the CA / SUB CA's revocation properties the above GPO will allow it to check that custom Responder URL first, then ocsp as defined in the AIA extension and then CRLs
Thanks Mark!

Will post reference links once MS verifies my account.

Hello, I always use web-based email via the browser at home. I do not use an email client(well in the office we have Outlook). I'd like to use Thunderbird at home with a Gmail account that can be used by the kids. Now I am using Avira IS 2012 and would like to make it scan emails through it's mailguard component. I have seen Thunderbird work with Avast IS on my brother's pc but I see that for it to scan all emails the SSL/TSL should be deactivated. I was asking the tech guys at the office about email clients, digital certificates etc and they only remarked "google it"...wow... So I came here....Now my questiosn are: a. Is it safe to disable SSL/TSL in an email client? In the office we have that(with Norton Enterprise) and I see an indicator at the bottom of the email message that it was scanned by Norton. b. Can there be an application that can allow me to have SSL/TSL at the same time have Avira scan my emails...? I searched google and found out that in Avira it also has to be disabled to let it scan all emails. c. SSL/TSL is encryption right..? Does not using encryption in email okay..? I mean at home. In the office it's important but at home...opinions please..d. What ports for POP3 IMAP SMTP should I allow Thunderbird to use In the firewall( I use Comodo). If Thunderbird wants connections via other ports other than the default ones...should I allow it or not..?e. Can an email client be run inside a sandbox? Is it sane enough or crazy..? Just... A:Thunderbrid email client, Comodo Email Certificates, Avira IS 2012 questions

I would highly recommend that you keep TLS/SSL enabled this makes sure that your password and user credentials are not sent in the clear.

if the AV needs to have this disabled then its not a good AV..

The ports are on the setup page for Gmail: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_with_Thunderbird_and_Mozilla_Suite

Digital Certs are expensive to create and use, and only vital for businesses and not home users.

CRecordset is used in our code to access database, and the application already close connection and reopen connection when the network come back.

The issue is:
Step 1: The Client 1 disconnect network.
Step 2: Add one record into table1.
Step 3: Connect network for Client 1.
The new record can be display by Client 2, but can't be display by Client 1.

If I copy the database file in Client 1 to local driver, then the application can get the new record.
It seems the network driver has some cache bug.

Any one can help me on this issue?
Thanks very much!

This issue is hard to be reproduced, and it seems WIN 10 has no issue, but WIN 7 has this issue.

A few days ago, Norton popped up saying that my computer was infected with a virus called "downloader". it is associated with the files client.exe and client.txt
I turned off system restore and have run Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Norton, and Ewido... all while in safe mode.
I also ran CCleaner once the scan(s) is finished to clear out temp/recycled files.
Malwarebytes generally finds and removes a registry edit that disables virus notifications, but it always comes back.
Norton generally finds that client.exe is infected with a virus but can neither repair, quarantine, or delete it- saying "access is denied".
I have manually deleted the file as well, but it always comes back.
I have also had Norton scan each startup file individually as was recommended to me, but produced no results.
Is there any other program or method to ridding myself of this?
Thanks
-Erin

I use thunderbird to connect to my ARMY AKO email account. I noticed the majority of the time, the client has difficulty completing sending email. (Though some gets through without timing out.) Hello, I'm currently trying to connect to a wireless router/network and have been asked to do the following:

You can add a wireless client using either the "Push Button" or "PIN Number" method.
With the "Push Button" method, push the WPS button on the front of the router, then complete the process by clicking a button on the client (either a hardware button or a software button on the client's utility interface).
With the "PIN Number" method, select the PIN number method then enter the client's PIN number and click Apply. Then start the client WPS process soon after. You can find the client's PIN number on the client's utility interface.

Both of these options require me accessing the 'client utility interface' - but I don't actually know where this is!

Thanks so much
Adele

A:Client PIN number on client utility interface: where is this?

If your wireless adapter does not support those you will not find anything about them on the wireless utility. I disable that new fangled stuff on the router and just use WPA(2) passphrases.

If your adapter does support WPS or Pin, are you using a special wireless utility ('client utility interface') or just the Windows 7 one? Either way, when you try to connect to your network you will probably see those options.

Hello!Recently I've been trying to upgrade my  HP Pavilion p6803w so that it could play some of the newer games that came out recently. However, for some reason, despite the fact that the product specification page says my CPU should be compatible, I am getting an "Unsupported CPU Installed" error. Specifications Page:http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02859378 CPU I'm trying to install:https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Phenom-HDZ955FBGIBOX-125W-Processor/dp/B00275G0VE  On a side note, I updated my BIOS before getting the processor, so I don't think that's the issue. The page says that "AMD Phenom II X4 9xx/9xxe/8xx Quad-Core (Deneb core)"  processors are compatible, so my "AMD Phenom II X4 955 HDZ955FBGIBOX 3.2 GHz/6 MB L3/125W Processor" should work. Is there anything I'm overlooking? Thanks!

Hello, I've been seeing a text window that appears at startup for a few days now. It displays the title "Unsupported 16-bit Application." I've uploaded a screenshot of it here: https://postimg.org/image/44z4wzkql/. Since the appearance of this window my computer has had many issues upon startup, including just freezing a few seconds after I get to the desktop, forcing me to restart. I also cannot put it into sleep mode, as it freezes upon waking as well. I also get a blue screen now seemingly at random that has "driver_power_state_failure." I read that updating my BIOS would solve that hopefully, so I did that earlier today. I would very much appreciate any help I could get. Thanks in advance.

Here is my system information:

Recently decided to upgrade the processor on my HP Pavilion a4313w.  I reviewed the website here and determined that I'd go with the AMD Phenom x4 9750, 95w model (HD9750WCJ4BGH). After installing I now get an Unsupported CPU Installed message and then computer automatically shuts down. Processesor Specs: http://products.amd.com/en-us/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx?id=401&f1=&f2=&f3=&f4=&f5=&f6=&f7=&f8=&f9=&f10=&... HP Pavilion a4313w Supported Processors:  http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=120&prodSeriesId=... Any thoughts?  My thought was Bios, but after reviewing the HP updates site it says no bios updates for selected model. NOTE: There are two 9750 models of processors, one is 125w and the other 95w, I have compared the model number to ensure I have the 95w version.

Hello All, Happy New Year.
I have a new laptop at last and it has Windows 7. I've been doing quite well with all the new features but have hit a problem trying to load my family tree programme. It won't load and I get the message: 'Unsupported 16-bit application. The programme or feature "\??\E:\Setup.exe" cannot start or run due to incompatability with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is available.'

Will this mean I have to buy a new programme or may there be some sort of upgrade? I have tried to contact the company but they are still on Christmas holiday. If I have to upgrade will I still be able to use all the data I have got saved when using the old laptop and family tree? Sorry if this sounds basic to you but it is way beyond me. All my other programmes have loaded with no problem.
Best wishes.
Pam

I am looking for a copy of the BIOS for my dv4000. The the PC is no longer supported by HP so I cannot download it. Where can I find a copy of the current BIOS F.17 that is used by my pc.  I assume there is a repository somewhere that would contain this antiquated data? Not by HP, but a third party perhaps? Additionally, I am looking for any updated versions for this PC.Thanks

EDIT:

I was reading about turning on 16bit application supprt for Win 8 32Bit OS. But it would seem it was only available in the developers version. Have a look around for 16BIT emulators for Win 8. Ill spend a short time searching.

You could try Dos Box

I was running my computer normally, and decided to check out the Megaman 8 bit deathmatch game. I didn't go to options first to set resolution and then moment the game opened i got a screen blackout except for the words "Unsupported Mode". Now i've tried going to safe mode and changing the resolution. That didn't work so i went back to safe mode, and system restored to 2 days earlier. That didnt work so when i booted computer back up i hit the f8 button and then had it start the computer at the bottom resolution setting 600/400, something like that. I get a split second look at the windows logo then it goes to the unsupported screen again.
I've tried everything i could figure out, and even googled. I've haven't the faintest on what to do. please help.

OS. Windows Vista Service pack 2
Hard Drive: 1 terrabyte
Ram: 6 gb ddr2

Motherboard: T series....not sure of the model.

Uninstall your graphics driver in Safe Mode using Driver Sweeper - http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

Then install the latest driver - http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Reboot and you should be able to get into Normal Mode. And next time, make sure you set the compatibility settings (right-click on game icon -> Properties) before launching the game.

A:Unsupported 16-bit application

Welcome to BleepingComputer Older 16-bit applications are run using NTVDM in Windows NT based OS (2000, XP, Vista, 7). NTVDM is not included in 64-bit editions of Windows. As such you cannot run 16-bit applications in any of the 64-bit editions of Windows. You can try installing an older 32-bit edition of Windows (like Windows 98) inside a virtual machine using Virtual PC or Virtual Box. Then install your older Cobol inside this Windows 98.

Though my new laptop exceeds the minimum and recommended system requirements to play various games, it can't because the video card is not supported. My current card has over double the required video memory, full 3d support and version 4 pixel and vertex shaders. Is there anything i can do, or am i just out of luck?

It's a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express with 1.3 GB of memory, if that helps.
