Something seems to be consuming all hard drive space

Q: Something seems to be consuming all hard drive space

I have had a problem with my C drive getting used up and it is about out of space now. I'm wondering if I may have some kind of virus. I'm inlcuidng a log from hijack this if someone could look it over and see if anything stands out. I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,

Tim

Preferred Solution: Something seems to be consuming all hard drive space

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Something seems to be consuming all hard drive space

Have you reviewed posts here concerning the same question you are asking?

Here are some simple steps to get you started
run chkdsk /r at a cmd prompt and answer yes to the question. reboot so it runs to check for file corruption
run disk cleanup [programs/accessories/system tools] and check everything
run defrag [same location]

check your system restore points configuration. you may be saving too often or have too much reserved disk space for this operation

Hello,

I have a Acer Aspire 5315 laptop that is going on three years old with Windows Vista Basic. The computer has an 80 gig hard drive with two partitions split evenly. After a while I noticed it continually consuming more hard drive space on the C drive when no new programs were being installed. During regular use during the day (checking email from Gmail) I started getting prompts that the computer was running low on hard drive on C drive. The computer had 2 gigabytes of free space on the C drive initially. I rebooted only to find out that windows didn't give the space back.

I have tried doing a hard drive clean up with only marginal success in reclaiming part of the initial 2 free gigs on C drive. I have tried registry fixing programs like Reg Cure and other system tune up programs like System Mechanic and the problem continues. The laptop initially came with 1 gig of ram I have upgraded it to 2 (the max the laptop can take).

I noticed the problem started to happen after I had to use a restore point to fix a driver problem with my printer. Any suggestions of what to do is much appreciated or even what to try.

I had heard that laptops have a recovery console that may fix this this problem that resets it to factory defaults. Further information on this would also be useful.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Good afternoon,

Hope someone here may recognise this issue and be able to suggest a cause.

A computer on our network was reported to have 0% hard drive space.
Upon investigation, I found in the Local Settings\Temp a 34GB file, which had maxed out the drive.
Has any one seen this kind of file before?

jam_3176308625.dat

This isn't the first instance of this file being foud on the estate.
A bit of background, this machine is on an isolated network with no internet connectivity and locked down physical ports, running Windows XP.
Very small likely hood of this being viral related.

Many thanks,
and Kind regards
Martin

I have an HP Envy 17 notebook. My notebook has 2 hard drive slots. It came with 2 500 GB HDD's. I decided to re vamp my laptop when I got it new. I put in a 40 GB SSD as my main drive. Desiganted as the C: Drive. I didnt have money for anything larger and I had my mind set on having a fast SSD instead of a normal HDD. I also put in a 320 GB Hard drive as the secondary drive. Its my E: Drive.

I also put in 8GB of Random Access memory. It came with 4GB. I then Installed Windows 7 Ultimate to my 40 GB SSD. I had about 7 GB left after installing. I just wanted a fast boot up. And I wanted Windows to run fast and smoothly.

Awhile later My SSD started having space disappear for no reason. I wasn't installing anything new on the drive, nor was I saving anything extra to it either. The extra 7 GB dwindled down to about 200 MB. Now my notebook is always running on low disk space. I have tried removing unwanted programs. I also tried clearing out cookies, history and my cache. Even tried removing system restore and shadow copies. And also tried the windows disk cleanup utility.

Does anyone know why my SSD started to have space magically vanish? I would like the space back. And can anyone give me any other ideas on how to free space on the drive? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Probably windows updates that have been downloaded. 40GB is pretty small for Windows 7. You could running through the disk cleanup utility located in START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS

Run as service account
Verify that there is enough space on C:
Create a Install directory on remote server
Then copy the file from my computer remote server.

Can anybody please help me!!!

I found this code on "SpiceWorks.com'.

I have not tested. I have not test (just to be clear). It's set up to determine % of free space (on a text file listing of servers) but could be modified to do what you want.

How do I put the hard drive space used and free space on the Partition C: ? Partition D:\ and Partition E:\ has it but for some reason drive C:\ is missing it doesn't say how much space is used and how much space is free. The GBs are missing

A:How to bring back the amount of free space and used space on a hard drive

I'm a little confused about your question

You can't see how much drive space you have left when viewing your C drive via My Computer, or similar?

If you right-click on My Computer and select Manage, when the new window pops up click on Disk Management from the left hand side. What does that tell you about C drive? Assuming your C drive is actually a hard drive (and not a CD drive or something, though I have never heard of this happening and don't even know if it's possible to have C as your CD drive), you should see details at the top of the screen such as how much space you have left, by percentage of total capacity, as well as GB

Hey guys,
I'm having a big problem with my hard drive space. First of all it keeps decreasing for no apparent reason when i am connected to the internet even though i'm not downloading anything. And i'm not talking about mb but GB!! My first guess was a vius so i ran my antivirus (avast) and removed some issues, but the trouble continues... I installed the WinDirStas as i saw in other posts to find if i missed something. And to my surprise i discovered that my HD is occupied by ~80GB of unaccessible files! I'm not sure i am saying that correctly so see for yourselves...

Running Vista 2000 SP 3 on an older PC. Just installed Norton 360 and clean things up a bit. Have a 500GB drive that was about half full before the Norton install. Went down to 25MB in a day. No unusual activity save for copying 100ish GB of photos onto a thumb drive.

I have deleted more than 1.5 GB of stuff and verified that the drive reflected that reduction in properties. It did. Then over the next half hour it filled back to 25mb left.

I have done all the obvious: compressed, cleared recycle, "cleaned" the disk. Again, this is not an issue of removing files. Something is consuming space. It appears to stop at 25MBs - which makes me think that there may be a virus - but I JUST installed and updated Norton and went through all that .... so I am befuddled.

Ideas?

A:SOmething is rapidly consuming disk space

I would suspect something went wrong with the Norton install. You could check the Norton folder in both C/Program Files and in C/Program Data. Check how large they are.

I've recently been plagued with a pretty severe virus, which while i thought i had it mostly under control has covertly been filling my hard drive. I'm almost positive i've tracked down the offending file (C:\windows\system32\logfiles\wmi\trace.log) which is over 7 gigs. I'd like to just delete it but I'm not sure of the repercussions and doubt that this will stop the source of the problem.

Here are symptoms of the virus so far:

Unable to access task manager (fixed by manually altering registry)
Intermittent trojan adclicker/loader attacks (consistently deleted by synmantic)
Constant attempts made to alter registry item {192937EA-D3BB-45F5-9B33-ED6C3C358672} by "ec526bfb" (blocked by Spybot TeaTimer)
Spybot is unable to completely remove Virtumunde due to its being in memory but running at system startup yields same problem
5+ gigs of disk space consumed (C drive is listed as 0 free bytes)
consistent single popups in internet explorer
at starting of windows there are a number of blank cmd prompt windows which cascade slowly across the screen

there's probably more things which i haven't discovered yet... i have the system restore discs but only want to use them if my only other option is buying a new laptop. any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

10% of my entire SSD space has been consumed to save old worthless files I have no interest in. How about a "choice" Microsoft? God, what is it that Microsoft doesn't like about offering us choices?
"Attention User: We are about to upgrade your system to the latest build. Would you like us to A)delete your old build and re-install fresh or B)Keep the old buggy outdated build on your system and have it consume lots and lots of valuable space?". I'm thinking option A? What the hell?

"We didn't want the user to have to make a choice". *sigh*

I should just format my SSD and install the new build myself. But Microsoft thrusts it upon me before I even knew what was happening. This is not the first time I've been thrusted upon by Microsoft.

I've seen a recurring post on many forums discussing the absurd amount of disk space being consumed by the C:\Windows\WinSXS folder.

I've done some testing in house to confirm the fact that the files in this folder are predominantly hard links to a small number of files and it's not really taking up anywhere near the space that Windows Explorer is reporting.

Here is a link to better explain what I am talking about:
WinSxS Disk Space Usage: It’s Not What You Think (David's Blog)
Here was my conclusive test:

1). I took a virtual machine and created a new 200MB hard drive that I assigned the drive letter E:

2). I created a subfolder on E: called WinSXS. So, I had E:\WinSXS

3). I copied in a 13MB zip file into E:\WinSXS.

4). I then created 20 hard links to that zip file with the command shown in the link above (mklink /h hardlink#.zip original file

5). According to Windows Explorer, E:\WinSXS is now 267MB in size.....even though the entire E drive is only 200MB.

6). From a cmd prompt, running dir on E:\ shows 174,543,872 bytes free.

Therefore, tools like Windows explorer and TreeSizePro will report that that WinSXS folder is consuming massive amounts of space....while the true fact is that the folder is being misrepresented because the reporting tools do not understand the difference between hardlinks and real files.

A:WinSXS Folder not actually consuming lots of space

Sorry for dragging up this old post, but it answers a question I've been searching and searching for an answer to. I can confirm that on my system, when I add up all the root directories on my main hard drive then subtract the "size" of the WinSXS folder, I get the reported used space in the properties of my boot drive.

Thanks pparks from ending this tail chasing!

I have a system and 3 internal hard drives.

The drvies are 120GB, 160GB, and 180GB but my system only recognizes 111GB, 149GB, and 167GB respectively. Tha tis about a 7% loss of space for each drive. 33 gigs lost in total. That's a lot of space.

None of the drives are partitioned and it's not and HP or other like system. It's a custom built PC. I only have an OS (WINXP) installed on my C drive (the 160 GB drive).

No matter how I connect these drives (on-borad IDE or IDE controller card) my system will not recognize the full space of any hard drive I install on my system.

The 120 is slave to the 160 and the 180 is on an ATA controller card (Promise Technologies) all by itself. All are Western Digital. The 180 is a special edition (and I recommend you stay away from WD special edition HDs. I have had to swap it for a refurb 3 times in 1.5 years. This is the first time I have installed it on a newer computer, though, so I hope it does not break like it did on my old, ancient system 3 times. My old system was and AMD 850 Duron with 128M RAM..but I digress).

So is there a way to get back this 33 gigs of missing HD space or is this just the way it is with WINXP?

Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,
I installed Ubuntu on my computer a few months ago and created another partition for it on my 1TB hard drive.

I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on.
That might have been a mistake.

Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on my hard disk that I can't use and I don't know how to add it back to my c: partition.

There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please?

I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.

The unallocated area is actually an empty extended partition. You need to delete that first.

I replaced the hard drive with the WD then did a system restore from the image. Everything works fine and everything looks exactly the same except the new hard drive is only showing 322GB used out of the 2TB. I now have both hard drives in the computer and opened up the contents side by side, they both contain the same files and folders. Ok. So I just installed Windows XP home on an older computer. I installed just a few programs I want (antivirus, DVD burner, etc), and did all of the Windows updates. Everything is working nice and fast and perfectly, at least for an old computer running XP.

I now want to image the drive (or at least the used portions of it) so i can make a recovery image, so i won't have to redo all of the application installations and windows updates, because it took me many hours (and restarts) to get from a bare system to a system with SP3 and all the updates. I want to store this recovery image on a regular DVD, but there seems to be a storage space problem.

According to Windows Exlorer, when I click on drive C, I am using 9.7GB (see img1). I went to folder options, and selected to view hidden files, and I unselected the check box that says "hide operating system files". So I should be able to see everything (see img2).

However, when I go into drive C (see img 2a), and select everything and hit properties, it says I only have 5.5GB used in drive C (see img3).

So which is it? Am I using 9.7GB (which won't fit on a DVD-R) or am I using 5.5GB (which will fit on a DVD-R after compression)? If I am using 9.7GB, where are the missing 4GB? How do I view the file (or files) that are taking up those extra 4 gigs?

Hi,
I just upgraded to SP2 and noticed Vista has given me back some more space which is good. The bug is that it still think the overall capacity is the original. It's hard to explain.

OK, so I bought the computer and the drive was 217GB right? From 250GB you don't need to explain to me why that is. And anyway, after the install, the capacity increased as SP2 has somehow managed to do this. So the grey text underneath says 141GB free of 217GB when it is actually 233GB. I know this because if I go to the properties it says 81GB used, 152GB free and capacity 233GB. Also, after the digits in bytes are, the overal round off is wrong:

81,707,792,432 bytes is rounded to 76GB (lol)
152,109,969,408 bytes is rounded to 141GB (lol also)

Those rounded figures add up to 217 but the actual figures do not.

Is there anyway I can get the estimate to match the figures or is it just a non-fixable bug?

I have deleted all my music video and audio files/folders which were taking up even more space. I've tried defragmentation, emptying the recycle bin etc etc. I've uninstalled some rarely used programs.
In my Program Files there are 49 Items taking up 34.3GB of space. Surely this is too much ?
I do have Nero and Roxio which take a lot of space.
Looking at 'Control Panel' I see 'Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1', 'Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2' and also 'Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2'.
Do I really need 1.1 and 2.0 if I have 3.0 ?

The last time I reinstalled Windows XP, or when I used Partition Magiv (I don't recall which, as it was a couple years ago) I ended up with about 29 Gb of unallocated space between my C & D drives.

Can someone tell me how I can re-use this space, or is it gone for good? I have tried everything except reformatting the hard drive once again (which is a real pain) but can't seem to access the 29 Gb space.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

A:Hard Drive Space

How big is the drive (including all partitions)?

Does partition magic recognize the space?

Recently, I've run into a problem with my hard drive. My computer had plenty of space, but has mysteriously run out. I deleted old programs, deleted temp files, etc. and can't get rid of the problem. Even when I don't use the computer, I seem to be running out of space. I don't even know if a hijackthis log file can help with my problem, but I figured I'd post here.

Mod Edit: Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/533928/cleaning-up-my-main-drive/ - Hamluis.

My husbands computer can hold 232 gigs of hard drive. He barely had a few photos, and no music or videos on his computer. Just a few applications of card games, maybe 2. He also had Office 2010. Over night his hard drive filled up leaving him with only 5 gigs free. I have looked all over the drives and see nothing out of the ordinary. Does anyone have any ideas? I am running a full scan on it right now with the paid version of Avast.
I do appreciate anyone who gives me their time... Tara

A:Hard Drive Space...Where Did It Go?

You can use a tool like WinDirStat to investigate exactly what files are taking up what room on a partition/drive. You might want to try it.

Hi i'm brand new here so if this post is in the wrong spot please forgive me.
last week i was recoding some video's using Nero's Recode program (sidenote worked great) but now my 100 gig laptop on has 2 gigs of space left from the original 60 gigs free space. where did it go?? the video files have been deleted, i've used the disc clean-up program to remove the temp files and used the registry to enable Pagefiles removeal from another post of this forum. that clean up some on the space i now have 20gigs free space but i still am missing 40 more gigs that i have before i starting the recodeing.
in my disk de-fragmenter is shows me that i have a huge "yellow" portion of paging files still left and by just guessing it should be that extra 40 gigs just by seeing the size of the "yellow" bar.
how do i get rid of these "paging files" and how do i reclaim my lost space?

Okay something unusual started acting up on my computer today. I emptied out my system restore points as I do once every month (cause of viruses, spyware, etc.) Which is normal..cause like I said, I've done this once a month for the past 2 years probably. Well anyway..my used space went back to 4.83 GB.

After downloading some songs on itunes and purevolume (Yes both legal...therefore i know i haven't received any kind of spyware.) My used space went up to 4.86 GB But for some weird reason..no matter how high my used space gets..it is CONSTANTLY dropping..like I've used 4.84 GB...then right back to 4.83 GB.

I've heard of viruses EATING harddrive space..but never giving it back? lol..No files or ANYTHING seems to be missing. Anyone know what might cause something like this? I appreciate any kind of advice/information.

does anybody out there know what the limitations on hard drive space is on windows xp professional. i'm asking because i have this machine with 6 1TB drives (6000gigs) all connected to the 6 SATA ports on the motherboard, disconnected all but one...installed the OS...connected the other 5, and now i can't get it to boot. it will POST just fine...but hangs when trying to boot to OS, no windows logo or anything....just a blinking cursor in what looks like the dos shell...i know that xp isn't built on the dos shell, but that's what it looks like right before loading windows. thanks to any and all assistance.

I have a 3ghz Phemon, 8gb ram and a 60gb SSD drive.
After installing Win 7 x64 my install was a bloated 20gb. This includes 8gb in the c:\windows\temp folder that I can't delete. After installing a few apps and games, I have 12gb free. I cannot account for 15gb of "missing space"
system restore is off.

any suggestions?

A:Where is my hard drive space going??

Hi. Welcome.

Download Tree Size. It will help you find what is taking up your space.

https://www.jam-software.de/customer...ialProcess.php

To clean up that temp folder you can run CCleaner.

Download CCleaner 2.22.968 - FileHippo.com

Hope this helps.

I have a 120gb HDD, in two partitions of 51gb.

C:\ is where Vista is installed, and its full,

My program installations come to 5gb
iTunes comes to 16gb
Documents come to 2gb

Where the hell has the space gone? I figure its Vista, anyone know how to free up some space??

I have tried the System Restore allocation thing, and that was only 2gb, and I have run Disk Cleanup and that freed up 3gb.

Help?!

Use CCleaner (google it) to find out, and maybe remove it

I hope this question is not too basic or I am missing something easy here.

I have Windows 7 on my HP and am trying to make space on the hard drive. So I recently moved thousands of photographs and spreadsheets to an external hard drive and then deleted them from my internal hard drive and cleared the recycle bin.

Now the C drive says I have 914 GB and only 109 GB available.

I checked the folders under C drive and accounted for 88 GB.

So my question is where might the other 717 GB's being used? And if this a lot of space to be using, how do I reduce it to make more space for photographs and such on my hard drive.

Thanks.

Dan

I have a recent Win764 build less than 6 months old, seems to have a virus or something that is making the hard drive space dissapear. The accual contents are 36GB out of 300GB. The computer will display that there is only 3.75GB left out of 300GB. I ran windirstat and tree and it gives me the correct allocation of data. The data matches what is supposed to be on this drive, there is no random file that is taking up 275GB. Leads me to believe that its a Virus, and cannot find to much on the subject. Please Advise? Thanks

Hello Stiglez.

What's reporting you only have 3.7 gig left? (I can't help with the issue if its AV related but we can try to rule out other issues until a mod moves this to malware.)

What is reported from either the command shell when you do a dir or from the drives properties?

What AV do you use and have you updated and done a scan?

Have you tried doing a chkdsk /f from the command line?

With the few details provided this would be what I would check first.

Zen

So i just got my laptop its a compaq presario and it came with 138gigs. Initially it came with around 119gigs and after awhile i started to see that it started to decrease like around a gig aday or when i left it on to long. I took it in and geek squad and they said i had a virus but i restored it and nothing on my trendmirco has detected anything. I run proccess explorer and i cant see anything weird that is poping up using alot of CPU and now after i restored it twice i think its slowly doing it again but i heard that Vista uses alot of memory stored in cache called superfetch is this the reason why i see the decrease when im doing something on the system or what is serverpack 2 the guy kept telling me that this could be the case also. Please help im trying to understand all of this

A:Hard drive space being used up?

Hello Cgarcia5,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I am assuming that you are talking about your hard drive space being eaten up. Part could be from the pagefile or prefetch. Also restore points will take up to 15% of the hard drive.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I've been having some problems with my hard drive. I have a 44GB hard drive on my computer. I've calculated the total amount of space used for that drive (ALL files/programs/folders/hidden files,folders....etc) and they all equate to about 18GB. So then, I should have around 36GB left. But then when I right-click on my hard drive it says that I only have 17mb left. I've checked several times and I've restarted my computer. But it continues to tell me that I have 17mb left.

I'm not sure what's going on. It was fine about one hour ago - I still had around 20 something GBs of space. I'm not really sure but just before this happened I was using a program called "Video Dub" (I was trying to resize the resolution of a movie but then it had an error saying that I didn't have enough space on my hard drive).
Can someone please help me?

I have deleted games that I have installed and other programs that I don't use, but it still has low space left. I don't get it. What could be taking up so much hard drive space?

I have about 11 GB of free space on my 283 GB HD. I've got approximately 80-90 GB of programs that I see in the control panel and about 40-50 GB in folders. Seems like I should have more space available.

Thanks.

A:Hard Drive Space

The space is probably taken up by system restore. If you want more space delete all of your restore points. Make a new one, in case it is needed. You will have more space.
You can delete the points, by turning off SR. Be sure to turn it back on when the points are deleted
