Strange behavior with Internet Explorer custom security settings.

Q: Strange behavior with Internet Explorer custom security settings.

I hope someone can help me work this out, it's driving me crazy!
I'll try to explain it in as few words as possible!
There is a website we need to access on which we're having trouble getting some of the buttons to display. In short it works when the internet zone is set to "Medium" but not when it's "Medium-High" (I have added it to trusted sites
but in properties it shows as "Unknown Zone (Mixed)" so seems to use the "Internet Zone" settings.)
I am trying to track down which security setting is causing the issue. To do this my plan was to make a note of all the settings that differ between Medium and Medium-High. However if I set it to medium-high and manually change all the settings
to be identical to medium it still doesn't work... yet if I use the "Reset to: Medium" option at the bottom it does work! This doesn't make any sense to me.
Are there other hidden stetting affected by the "Reset to" option that I can't change manually.
Any help would really be appreciated! Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Strange behavior with Internet Explorer custom security settings.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This coupled with Microsoft Edge's unpredictable website loading with frequent Network's internet connection disconnecting to the brink of unusability; nothing; even Microsoft Edge Reset won't resolve these scenarios.

Ok, I'm relatively new at the whole computer thing and I know, "What took you so long?"

I have Windows XP but just recently, when I try to open Internet Explorer, it may take a few attempts before it opens.(ya' know the hourglass expires before anything happens) However, when I log off, ending program task panel opens, then ending program iexplore.exe opens and keeps opening for the amount of times I tried to open internet explorer.
This leads me to believe that it in fact opened somewhere but not anywhere I can see it. Also on occasion, the task panel will turn blue for quite sometime when I close out an open window.
I tried searching for an answer to this problem but to no avail, so any advice here would be most appreciated.

Recently I've been having trouble closing Internet Explorer successfully. Oftentimes I'll get a very suspicious error window that says "closing this window may cause serious problems." Generally when that happens I'll end the process via Task Manager rather than clicking on anything on the error window. I'm a bit paranoid that I may be infected with a key-logger of some type and I'd very much like to keep my online accounts secured. Once I've gotten the all clear from you guys I plan on creating new strong passwords for all my accounts. It seems like I haven't seen the problem since installing the latest Windows Updates recently (including the latest malware removal tool) but I thought I'd ask the pros just to be safe rather than sorry. We have Windows 10 Professional Edition 64 bit and IE11. Once the computer is connected to a Domain Account, the internet Explorer Enables Protected Mode and Site and custom Level Tabs are grayed out under security Tab. We are not able to add the intranet
trusted sites.
We have checked on the Domain Controller Group Policy and no policy has been set for internet explorer.
If we login to a local user,  all the above greyed out tabs are enabled and Protected mode is disabled.
I have tried several ways and nothing is successful. Which setting is to be done for enabling this setting while connected to Domain account?

So I have a weird behavior and I cannot find what the cause would be. I have several computers and I am getting an optional update whereas I think I should not be getting based on my settings.

Computer A - Windows 7 Pro 64-bit - GTX260 - no update
Computer B - Windows 7 Pro 64-bit - GTX780Ti - optional update
Computer C - Windows 7 Home 64-bit - GTX430 - optional update
Computer D - Windows 7 Home 64-bit - GTX430 - optional update
Computer E - Windows 7 Pro 64-bit - GTX675M - no update

The update is to the Nvidia drivers where I do not update to current via the Windows update nor do I update to the current via the Nvidia website since the latest drivers are causing issues.

My understanding is that in order for Windows 7 not to look for driver updates you need to go to:
Start > Devices and Printers > right click on your computer, select Device installation settings and then set the following;
* No, let me choose what to do
* bubble in Never install driver software from Windows Update

All the above systems are setup this way. So I am not sure why some systems are showing up as an optional update while others are not. I know that the Nvidia drivers are not current.

So am I missing some other setting that is causing this?

Hi Air,

uh I do not know if this is a permanent fix but you could go into Windows Update and right click the update and select "Hide this update", note there will be the UAC shield next to the option so be prepared with the Admin password.

Hi,A friend of mine is running Win XP and IE6.I have designed a web site for him which I have emailed to him for proof readings.Javascript has been used to disguise email addresses and an excel spread sheet is included as a download from a link. When trying to run the draft website from his machine in IE6 the script doesn't run but there is no security bar at the top of the browser window where you would normally expect to "click" to be able to select the option to allow it to. In his "Internet" and "Intranet" security settings "Active Scripting" is enabled. When he clicks on the link to download the excel file he gets a message which says something to the effect that "Security Settings will not allow download of this file".However, for a similar web site which I have designed and is published, which uses javascript for the menus, the menus appear as intended so clearly the script is executing. Further, on this site a word doc downloads with no problem.I have to confess I am stumped. Anyone have any ideas?ThanksDerek

I have just upgraded from IE6 to IE7 on PC with XP and SP2.
Everything works fine, except I always get the message that my security settings are at risk!
When I click on "fix it for me", the settings are not stored.
When I try to set the security settings to the default settiings then click OK, again the settings
are not stored.
This is very irritating and will cause me to go back to IE6, which is a bit annoying when my laptop uses IE7.
Can anyone help me to store my security settings, it seems so easy when you read the Help info!

I've been having a problem for a while that has been quite annoying to me. I think it relates to XP service pack 2, but I'm not sure:

In Internet Explorer, under Tools>Internet Options>Security, there are two problems.
The first is that the security settings slider for internet refuses to change to anything below medium. It gives the error:
"The Recommended security level for this zone is 'Medium'. The level you have chosen is lower than this. Please choose a security level of of 'Medium' or higher."
This sounds like a security pack issue, as I noticed the problem right after installing it. But it still bothers me to not have the ability to override the default.

The second problem on the same window is the lack of a "Custom Level" button. The button is there, but grey and unclickable. This is relatively recent and corrosponds to my recent virus infection which I just got rid of.
This problem is much more aggrovating as it doesn't seem to be any type of spyware or virus, and it restricts browsing in many ways.

I have run McAfee and found no current viruses/worms/trojans. I also have run both of the latest editions/updates of SpyBot and Adaware.

Somehow these problems seem easy to fix, but, of course, I've been unable to find any solution. Any help would definitely be appreciated.

I've been having problems off and on with my internet security lately. I can't download anything unless I set it lower than the default which isn't recommended by IE.

Anyway I decided to download Firefox today and I'm able to download but this one particular site won't let me upload anything because of my security settings:

I downloaded Firefox thinking it would solve this problem but it didn't. I turned off TrendMicro but nothing seems to work. At one point it would work in IE but I had to go another User Account. I don't plan on using IE so if anyone can assist me on how it can be fixed within Firefox I'd appreciate it.

Howdy--

Desktop's acting a little strange and I'd like to eliminate a security issue. Basically, after running any app for a while it'll freeze up (not all the time, but maybe once every two days). I end the process and it disappears from the process list, but the screen for the app stays there, locked up. While it sits there with that app locked up, I can run any proggy except the one that is sitting locked up just fine. When I log off and on again, I have internet, but no network, so I have to restart it. I'm not the best at reading HijackThis Logs, I didn't see anything, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything.

If it isn't security, what might it be?

I am trying to package a custom installation for Internet Explorer 10 using IEAK.  I am having some trouble with the Import Security Settings portion of the tool.
It is failing to import the security settings.  It says it has imported them, but upon installation the security settings have not been included in the IE 10 installation.
Looking at the "INS" folder that is built and the custsec.inf file create there, I can see that only two security settings have been captured -- "1401" and "2500" and none of the other 50 or so security settings are collected
for any zone.
In addition, I have trusted sites set to not require HTTPS, but that selection is not captured into the custom IEAK generated browser installer.
Does anyone have any tips on how to successfully deploy a customized version of IE 10?  I am even more reliant now on IEAK since IEM mode was removed from Group Policy, so I reall need to figure out why it doesn't function correctly.

A:Internet Explorer 10 IEAK capturing Security Settings

When ActiveSetup is run on a 64bit OS, first all the 32bit ActiveSetup keys are run first, and the 64bit ActiveSetup keys are run second.

The problem is that IEAK is adding the CUSTOM ActiveSetup to the 32bit key, and the ie4uinit.exe is added to the 64bit key.  While the IEAK has an ">" listed in the GUID (to signal for it to run last) it runs "last" in the 32bit
ActiveSetup commands.  The 64bit ones (which the ie4uinit.exe is part of) all run after the 32bit stuff....
So it appears that IEAK is not designed to build an IE 10 installation that will run correctly on 64bit OSes.  The IEAK CUSTOM settings will always apply prior to the ie4uinit running.  I suppose this can be changed by further manipulating the
registry after IEAK customized IE 10 is installed and making sure the >{GUID} entry is moved to the 64bit registry.
I suppose another way to look at it is ie4uinit is not correctly noticing that that the user settings are already present in the user's registry and is wallpapering over them with the incorrect settings.  Either way, the end result is that the incorrect
settings are being configured for the user on first logon.

I find it difficult to believe that Microsoft IE team has messed this up and that no one has discovered it before.  (I'm not being sarcastic) That makes me question what I am doing that is incorrect because I can't  believe that a problem like
that would exist in a ... Read more

I am having a problem with the way Windows Explorer displays one of my folders. The folder is stored under Documents>Personal. The title of the folder is LETTERS. The folder, until a few days ago, contained a subfolder called "Spain". All letters pertaining to Spain were stored in the subfolder; all other letters were stored by themselves in LETTERS. A few days ago I found all letters that were in the Spain subfolder were now combined with all other letters. The subfolder Spain no longer existed. It took me many hours to get this straightened out. For one thing, I could no longer create a new folder within the LETTERS folder. A computer technician I contacted told me that was because the LETTERS folder was READ-ONLY. Unchecking this property didn't help, so I created another dummy folder to transfer all the files in LETTERS to the dummy folder, delete LETTERS and rename the dummy folder as LETTERS. This apparently solved the problem until today: the subfolder Spain is now gone again and all letters are now combined in one folder. Just out of curiosity I brought up the DOS command and looked in USERS...DOCUMENTS>PERSONAL DOCUMENTS>LETTERS. A dir command showed the SPAIN subdirectory plus all the non-SPAIN letters, exactly the way it should be. My question: why doesn't Windows Explorer show the SPAIN subfolder and why does it combine all letters--SPAIN and non-SPAIN--together?

So I really didn't know how to get a better title for this issue I have and it's started bothering me. I'll describe the symptoms:

- WinRAR drag&drop not working. Access Denied error, basically cannot write to temp folder
- some apps cannot update, such as Opera
- some files are asking again and again for permission to be ran, even though I have unchecked "Always ask before opening this file". Message is "Publisher couldn't be verified etc." Might be unrelated.

I can obviously solve these issues by running Opera or WinRAR as administrator, but I have installed Win 7 quite a few times ago, this behavior is not normal.

Can you help me bringing things back to normal?
Thanks.

It is connected to the network but not to internet.

I disconnect from the network and connect it again and now it also gets connected to the internet as expected.

The detail of my connection is:

I always need to disconnect and connect again my network when I start my computer. And some times when I get problems and I am not able to load web pages I need to do the same.

What is wrong?

I fear that an old PC I recently purchased from a garage sale may have had a virus that spread throughout my network.

First, a little bit of background about this computer. Around December of last year, it was infected by a virus that seemed to be neutralized after some assistance. But within a week, the computer wouldn't even start up anymore, as it would freeze up before even displaying the desktop icons. To my dismay, I found out that the Vista install CD had ran away to some remote area of the downstairs garage, so I installed a copy of Windows Server 2008 I had on hand (I got it for free). Anyways, long story short, it turned out there wasn't an antivirus in the world that would let me install their software without paying money, due to the fact I had a server OS. I wound up installing Microsoft Security Essentials, knowing very well that it was unsupported. But, it was the best I could do for free.

Now, let's fast forward to this weekend.
I had found and purchased a PC for 10 dollars at a garage sale. The owners said that it had been in storage for a long time, but it had some nice goodies that came with it, such as a TV tuner card, and it had Windows XP. So, with great amounts of excitement, I slammed that computer tower onto my desk, plugged it in, and turned it on. It wasn't fast, but it seemed a bit cool, and a bit of a blast to the past after having Windows Vista for the longest time. I then connected it to the Internet. At that moment, I noticed ... Hi all

New user here. I'm pretty good with Windows and computers in general, but can't figure out this new problem. I started worked from home recently, and find myself easily distracted by going online (facebook, etc) or going through my personal files on my computer.

I download an app called Cold Turkey which works well for blocking websites and programs I shouldn't be using during work hours. This is great.

To block myself from my personal files, I installed another hard drive to save my work files on. Then I created a standard user (my work account) and blocked it from accessing my personal hard drive. (My C: drive is separate SSD). I then made another standard user for my personal desktop, and used the parental settings to not allow me to login to that account during work hours. I let my wife create a password for the admin user, which I am not allowed to know, and I only change settings with her letting me into the admin user.

In summary, as it stands:
work user: standard, no access to personal drive
personal user: standard, restricted to login during non-work hours only
admin user: full rights, only my wife knows the password

Now, the problems. I can't install new software under my work user or my personal user without my wife being home to insert the password. This is annoying and unnecessary and sometimes I need to install something for work and I have to wait until later when she's home.

Second, there is one program in my personal user desktop that i... Read more

Here is what is happening. Sometimes when I word processing or something offline. I get a small dial up prompt that pops up this dial up box does not connect. It is not my usual dial up box that I get when I click the network dial up icon. Here is another thing. The password is long, about twice as long as my usual one. Theres more When I go into explorer under connections the long (wrong) password is there too.

Is this some kind of hijack? If so does anyone have any info, It is bugging the crap out of me

Thanks

Hey all.

About a week ago my internet started disconnecting every 20 minutes. It happens both with wired and wireless. I'm on a college campus and everyone else is fine, its just my laptop. My sent and received bytes are also acting strange. As of right now, i have sent just over 1 million, but recieved over 14 million. I get disconnected from servers constantly and lose packet flow for the games i play. Here is my hijack this log and attatchmennt:

hello , i just want to know in Behavior Blocker , Norton is better? or Kaspersky is better ?

thanks friends

A:[Behavior Blocker] Norton Security vs Kaspersky Internet Security 2016

As for Kaspersky, I have not used it since about 2009 when it was Kaspersky PURE so I cannot really comment. But as for Norton, it blocks unknown files it doesn't have a HIPS as such but any program being stupid of trying to access websites and files they shouldn't get blocked by SONAR their zero-day and zero-hour malware component.

Hi,

I'm talking about: mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-xp.exe, which is in essential a few msi's (mp_ambits.msi, msse.msi and some other files).
I can do a silent install by using the switch /s /runwgacheck

I'd like to create a silent install with custom settings (Schedule Day/Time).

What is the best way to do that?

Regkey's: I find the custom regkey's (ScheduleDay.reg, ScheduleTime.reg) but I can't import them after the silent install (I think it's only possible by the system account?)
Can I use transformfiles?
Best regards,
adenm

Hi,
I'm currently have the issue, that mainly PDF files are handled different ways on each website.

First example: I open a PDF file in our document management system (Intranet), I only can choose to save
the file. If I open the catering menu pdf (Intranet), it opens directly in the IE11.
Seconde example: I search google for any PDF (i.e.
http://www.orimi.com/pdf-test.pdf), it opens within the IE11.
If I open Outlook Webaccess, I only can download the file.
In the past with IE 10, I have been asked to open or to save the file.

Any idea what happened here? IE 11 is configured through GPO.

Thank you for your help!
Regards
Alex

I know, strange title but let me explain. Recently my I started noticing when outlook receives an email the sound would be garbled. I then notice internet speeds were slow. I usually get 55-60Mbps down and after testing when the garbled new email sound happened I would be down at 4-6Mbps down. I thought this was strange so I tried updating all my drivers however they were all up to date. I then thought it was my on board ethernet on my mobo so I bought an intel pcie card and have been using it since. The problem still occurs. I see no other issues on the computer but the ones listed above. Once I restart my computer everything is back to normal. It usually last 1-2 days before the problem appears again. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Thanks in advance for any help.

My computer was recently infected when I visited gamecopyworld.com. I've managed to clean out the infection, but IE is exhibiting some odd behavior ever since.

When I open IE and try to use the address bar to connect to a website, it looks like it's trying to connect, but then it just sits there and doesn't display anything and when I try to close the window I sometimes get the "End Task" dialog. I can open pages stored locally on my hard drive and link to other web pages from there (this is how I got the virus/trojan/etc. removed by using Housecall, turned out to be Vundo), and when I open a new window while IE is already running and displaying a web page, I can then use the address bar to go to a new page. I've downloaded and run several of the programs mentioned in articles I've read on this site:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
SuperAntiSpyware
ATF-cleaner
LSPfix

I cleaned out everything they recommended and I'm still having problems. Firefox seems unaffected.

Try these fixes:Log on as an administrator, go Start > Run and type: "cmd". In the window that appears type: "netsh winsock reset". When the program is finished, you will receive the message: "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset." Close the command box and reboot your computer.Go Start > Run > type: "cmd" In the window that appears type: "ipconfig /flushdns". Close the command box.Go Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and and choose Properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Reboot. Warning: Some Internet Service Providers need specific DNS settings. You need to make sure that you know if such DNS settings are required before you make this change.

Hi. My Internet Explorer just started acting strangely on my Netbook. Sometimes when I click on a link I just get returned to the Google homepage. Sometimes it's a chore trying to even get to the Google homepage because all these different search home pages come up. Sometimes there are advertisements that pop up at seemingly random times. Sometimes I get an error when trying to register on a website.
I may not have an active antivirus program running so that may be an issue. I would also like to check to see  if my Registry has been compromised if possible.
Also I have practically maxed out the drive with too many song files so I probably should remove some of those. The computer is also much slower than it was.
Thanks.

Hi, I have been having some disturbing problems with my computer recently. After running a Spy Sweeper virus scan, I discovered a Trojan/Zlob virus which I thought I took care of by removing. Now, I am having troubles with my Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers, as they will randomly decide to not load anything at all or only after hitting refresh at least 20 times. Typing in a URL takes ages and 3 times so farnone of my browsers were working and when i closed the browser window my computer immediately bluescreened and crashed. When I start Windows back up and report the error, I get a report saying it is caused by an unknown driver. I looked into my Add/Remove list and found Internet Explorer Security plugin 2006 and Internet Security Addon, whihc I thought were suspicious. I googled them and found that they were indeed malware caused by the Trojan/Zlob and I read that removing is in the Add/Remove list would not solve the problem. I dont know what else there may be on my computer, but I performed each step as reccomended in the prep guide for posting a hijackThis log file and I am still having these problems. Welcome to the BleepingComputer forum. We are currently studying your log and will have instructions for you shortly. Thank you for your patience.HijackThis is an analysis AND a repair tool. When you fix something in HijackThis, you are deleting a bad entry in the Windows Registry. In case of a mistake being made, there is a reversal for line entry deletions. HijackThis creates a new file which is a backup log of changes and you can reverse the line entry deletion. BUT...HijackThis needs a safe folder to keep these critical backup logs and a temp folder is definitely not safe as you might run Disk Cleanup and delete them. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e). Double click on C: If the folder is hidden, click on show the contents of this folder. Right-click on a blank space in the right column and select New > Folder Name it HJT (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe Move HijackThis.exe into this folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from the C:\HJT folder and have it Fixed checked, it will create a backup file of modifications to use which are easily accessible if restoring any files is necessary. If needed, HijackThis Folder Tutorial and How to Download, Extract and Run HijackThis.Another way to do this is: Please download HijackThis Self-installer. i am having an issue with a custom protocol that we currently have setup on all of our systems. This custom protocol is automatically setup and configured during the installation of one of our core apps.

the behavior that we are having is as follows:
- if i open the run dialog and type in nds://1234567890, the application opens and automatically brings up record #1234567890
- if i have an excel spreadsheet containing links in the above format, and i click a link, i get the same behaviour as above (works as expected)

- when i click on the above link from a webpage in ie8, i recieve 2 errors
1. a window titled nds://1234567890 with the error "there was a problem sending the command to the program"
2. a second window titled Internet Explorer saying unable to open the helper application for nds://1234567890.  The protocol specified in this address is not valid.  Make sure the address is correct and try again.
We are trying to do this on win7 x64 sp1 and all pc's are joined to a domain.  I dont know if DDE co es into play with this, but i do know theremis a dde section in the registry underthis protocol/clsid values.  i dont know if this is
an IE policy issues, or something else ( the fact that it worls outside of IE is what is stumping me).
any help would be very appreciated
thanks

I think you will have to either turn off protected mode for your users using Group Policy or ask the vendor for a fix for the protocol handler...

I am trying to set up a computer to print to a given file (originally an XPS file with the MS XPS Writer driver) without giving the user an option to change the name or location of this file.

Setting this up in most commonly used software, although a pain, is a possibility. However, I would prefer to setup the XPS writer as a printer with this already set up to ensure that all print functions are sent to this printer and handled in this way.

I would greatly prefer a non-commercial method, something I can set up myself.

I've modified the icons in my shell32.dll using Resource Hacker and when I've applied it Internet Explorer fails to start. It gives an error which reads,

"iexplore.exe - Entry Point Not Found"
The procedure entry point
shell32.SetCurrentProcessExplicitAppUserModeID could not be located in the dynamic link library api-ms-win-downlevel-shell32-l1-1-0.dll."

When I revert back to my previous shell32.dll which is also custom one, IE10 is working fine, so I think it is Resource Hacker that is causing this problem. I've tried modifying shell32.dll using Restorator 2007 but it gives me an error with "corrupt icon resource." I don't know what else to use to modify shell32.dll that won't make any problem with IE10. Any solution or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I use XP home and IE has gone wrong lately. It never seems to load a page first time and is very slow. I normally get a 404 error page or "parameter incorrect" or if its a forum I sometimes get a maintainance being carried out page the first time I open a new page. I have to refresh (sometimes several times) before it loads the page properly. It shouldn't be giving these errors as they aren't true.

I have done everything I can think of. Full error check, virus check with Norton and latest updates. I have also cleared out cookies and temp internet files, cleaned registry and cache. I have also run spyware removal programs spy bot and ad-aware. I have also re-installed IE but nothing seems to have worked. It is this version of IE 6.2.2800.1106xpsp2.030422-1633

Hello johnksc,I see that you have posted a Hijackthis log here and that you are in the process of receiving help. You should refrain from asking for help from others while you are being instructed by the HJT Team, helping you with a Hijackthis Log. Any modifications you make can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, following advice outside of that post may cause confusion for the Helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. If you still need assistance after your log has been reviewed and you have been cleared, please start a new topic.
