Windows Updates & Windows Live Installer refuse to.. install.

Q: Windows Updates & Windows Live Installer refuse to.. install.

So I, today, reformatted my PC.

After installing some bare essentials (anti virus and firewall mainly) I then loaded up the website for windows update.

I was prompted to install service pack 3 (after the windows installer update), so I did before anything else. After I restarted, I went to the update site again to do the remaining updates, but after they were downloaded, every install failed.

The same is happening with the Windows Live Installer (as I wish to install windows live messenger). However, I could install Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Media Player 11 with no problems.

Any help would be much, much appreciated. Anything I can do to help with the troubleshooting, just say.

Thank you.

[quick edit: Windows was installed with a service pack 2 era disk. Home edition, too.]

[Edit: After doing the method in this post, it now works.]

Preferred Solution: Windows Updates & Windows Live Installer refuse to.. install.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For a couple of months now, Windows Update will download, but fail to install the updates on offer.
There are no specific error messages, just a statement that a problem with my computer is stopping the install.
I can manually install some; some say 'not a valid Win32 App' and the security update for IE8 tells me
that it is not appropriate for my version of IE, which is IE8 anyway.

I have run SFC, chkdsk, full Avast antivirus scan, full SuperAntiSpyware scan, replaced the SD folder, deleted
the CatRoot2 folder, re-registered the .dlls, used the Microsoft 'Fixit' program, in fact I believe I have
done everything I have ever read about in MS articles, this forum and links referred to here.

I had not done anything or installed new software before the problem arose.

The only error I can find is in the WindowsUpdate.log file, as follows:

'Service WARNING: GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed with error 800704dd for session 0' (seems to be linked to Error: 0x80240020)

I've Googled this, and read this article:

The only thing I haven't previously tried is creating the entries, by reference to that article in:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\Winlogon\Notify\Senslogn -
which is currently empty.

So, having backed up the registry with ERUNT, double clicking on my newly created .reg file produces the following:

"Not all data was successfully written ... Read more

A:Windows Updates refuse to install.

This is what has now worked for me, may not work for you.

The MS article refers to the SensLogn folder in the registry and the required entries.

My problem writing to the registry was all about permissions, so having dealt with that, I then used my prepared .reg file, containing all the info (but in the appropriate format) in the MS article to populate the SensLogn folder.

All updates then installed without any problem, including the formerly troublesome Cumulative Security IE8 update.

The usual warning applies - do not mess with the registry, if you are not totally comfortable with registry editing
and always backup the registry first, with ERUNT or some other suitable program.

Hey everyone,

I really hope someone can help me with this one. I don't know what's going on. I never had any problems installing MSN Live before and now, it's a real pain.

I just got my PC back from the tech guy. He formated my computer and reinstalled Windows XP including the Updates.

Now at home, I'm trying to install Windows Live Messenger (MSN) and it's not working. It's giving me errors like, to check that I have enough hard disk space (I have 176 GB free space), If my computer has a firewall ( I don't), and that I make sure that my computer meets the system requirements ( I do meet the requirements).

Now, I don't know what to do anymore to get MSN Live.

Can please someone help me with this?

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on my laptop. For last few days I have not been able to install windows updates. I get the error with code 80070641.

After wandering through different forums and suggested solutions, I followed this path - control panel > system and maintenance > administrative tools > services > windows installer (double clicked and saw that the start-up type is 'Automatic'). When I clicked on the 'Start the service' button in the left panel here, I got the following message:

Windows could not start the windows installer service on local computer.
Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified.

Can anybody help me resolve this problem and bring the Windows Installer back on track?

By the way, later, I did this -

Click Start, Run and type: cmd /k sc qc msiserver
Press ENTER.

Following is the ouyput I received -

[SC] QueryServiceConfig SUCCESS
SERVICE_NAME: msiserver
BINARY_PATH_NAME : C:\Windows\system32\Msiexec.exe/V
TAG : 0
DISPLAY_NAME : Windows Installer

Does anyone have any idea of what's going wrong here?
Please help me resolve this issue.

My Mother-in-law pulled out a program disc halfway through installation, which jammed up windows installer (every time windows was started, a message came up saying to please put in the install disc). I fixed that by finishing the installation (putting the disc back in 4 or 5 months later, we don't get to visit much), but during the time she had the problem, which was right when she got the computer, 97 or so Windows Updates downloaded to the computer, but couldn’t install.
These files include everything from the service packs (which are supposed to install by themselves), to critical updates. The computer is very slow at startup, and wants to install the files at shutdown. No error messages, but the files remain there wanting to install.
I just want to find the file where the downloads are sitting, wipe them out, and start again. Any ideas? Windows XP.

Hi Everyone,
I think the 'Topic Title' really sums it up. I can see that the Win.Install Module is set to Manual and 'running' and I seem to have tried all the online advice I can find, including switching it off and back on again, but to no avail.
The last update which has been awaiting upload for about 2weeks now is for Microsoft Silverlite. but the box says 'Windows Installer can not be accessed'. I have tried to uninstall Silverlite, but it says the 'windows installer service could not be accessed' as previously.Programmes that are already installed will update from their respective sources.
My main problem, (to me) is that I don't know when it all started, although I have been into the Win.Update log, and can see some installed and some didn't in mid February.  I've downloaded the Microsoft 'MrFixit', for this problem, -- but that can't help me either.
Generally the PC is running fine, but the lack of updates the longer it goes on, is a concern.
All help will be greatly appreciated

My Windows Live account refuses to synch with my Mail, Calender & People apps in Metro using Release Preview. I keep getting an error message stating that my [email protected] account is not available. My Facebook, Twitter, Linked In & Google Mail accounts synch without a hitch. My Windows Live account synchs no problem on my Windows Phone, which has Mango installed. I can also access my Windows Live account on my browsers [IE, Opera, Firefox]. Why will it not synch in Windows 8 when it previously did?

Removing the account completely and signing in to the app again does not solve the problem. It makes no difference if I log in using either my Windows Live account or my local account to sign in to Windows 8.

Here's the message I get in top left hand corner of my screen. It says, "[email protected] is not available".

Sign into your account with Windows Live.
Go to where it says messenger. Then hit download and install.
You must do this WHILE SIGNED IN (wrote that big because it is a must do)
They must verifey the account other wise it will not install.
I know I went though the same thing.
Well I hope I was some help to you.

- Open the start menu
- Type "msconfig.exe" in the search bar
- Press enter to open msconfig

- Look through these entries for "windows installer" or the path to windows installer
- If you find it:

I've researched quite a bit to try and troubleshoot this on my own, but I think my problem stems from the fact that I installed and may be am running the wrong version of Windows Installer on my system. Please don't laugh...do I have a 64bit or an 86bit or am I running Win NT like HiJack This says? I think I installed the WIndows Installer for x86 and not mine...or does it not make a difference. Hence, my WIndows Installer is set up to run automatically in services, but it keeps stopping despite my re-starting it right before I attempt to download the NET Framework updates. I uninstalled the NET 1.1 and 2.0 that I already had on my computer and tried to reinstall them after downloading and running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. I've unreg'd and reg'd Windows Installer. I attempted to run the WFP Scan and didn't know where I was going with that. I've read and read MS KB articles to a point where I am tired and thinking I might make things worse. I thought about uninstalling Windows Installer and re-installing and then it warns me that all sorts of programs, like every one, may not run, so I didn't go there.

So, I hope the above paragraph explains thoroughly what I've done, not done and what my issue is. Or not...so let me know what more info you need to assess. I bought a new SSD with the intention of using it for the main system partition.  As such, my intention is to use WinPE (e.g., supplied by the Automated Installation Kit) to produce an image of my present system from the hard drive.  Then following
instructions for use of the AIK I want to run the Windows 7 Installer using the install.wim produced for the current operational system.  This all works as expected until trying to run the Windows 7 installer and selecting the new SSD as the target for
the installation.  Windows 7 installer produces an error saying that Windows cannot be installed on the selected drive because it cannot be used to boot.  This is perplexing for several reasons.
1.  I thought one of the jobs of the installer was to make the installed system bootable.  What was I supposed to do to facilitate such?
2.  Even if the Windows 7 installer cannot make the new drive bootable, it was not my intention to boot from it.  I was expecting that the Windows 7 Installer would use the existing boot device (i.e., special boot/recover partition) and simply
add an entry to the current list of systems that can be selected during the boot process. Of course the error I received occurred prior to any attempt on the part of the installer to have me specify the desired boot device.  I don't use the installer
often enough to know how that is done but was expecting that I'd be able to select the boot device.

Ok so, to begin, I run Windows XP Service Pack 3. About June 21, I installed CA Internet Security from the CD I bought. The next day, my computer started acting weird. The start menu/toolbar was missing, internet didn't work, when you opened programs they looked different, etc. I figured the problem was CA. I unistalled CA, Service pack 3, and IE8. I tried reinstalling Service Packs 2 & 3 but couldn't fix the problem. I finally found a registry repair program that found 2,000 errors, and fixed my computer. I reinstalled everything.

I've been getting "another installation is in progress" alerts when I try to install some programs. I tried using Computer Management, shutting off MSI, then restarting and turning it back on. But this fix only lasts for 2 days. I downloaded "Windows Install Clean Up", and deleted a part of CA that never re-installed June 23. Also, when I start my computer, 3 or 4 "Windows Installer" programs open themselves and I dont know what program its part of. Can anyone help me? Also, some System components haven't been working right since June.

My computer bluesecreens a LOT (3 times just today), has been nearly since I built it 5 years ago and I've gone through everything to fix it. Last thing I've noticed is that there have been a couple of updates to my motherboard firmware but when I try to install them I just get an error that they won't work with a 64 bit OS (Win7 64). I thought about using a live CD running a 32 bit Windows just to install the update. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Any reason it might not be a good idea? I looked around and just at first glance saw one called Vista pe that looked pretty decent.

A:Installing updates via Windows Live CD

You may be able to flash it directly from the BIOS. My ASUS motherboards have an Easyflash utility built in. I just put the rom file on a thumb drive and do it all from the BIOS menu. The motherboard manufacturer may also have a utility to create a bootable thumb drive with the flash utility on it. Then you just boot from the thumb drive and run the utility. It might be easier than the live CD method.

i know this has been aroound google but i did not find a solution...well sort of

i have WLM 2009 build 14.0.8089.726 and its forcing me to update to 14.0.8117.xxx

gave me this error when i log in

"a newer version has been downloaded and is available. you must instll this newer version in order to continue. would you like to do this now"

i found on google that if i put compatibility mode to windows 2000, it would let me log in. IT WORKS. but however, i also have MSG PLUS installed. If i use windows 2000 compatibility mode, MSG PLUS will not work.

so is there a solution to this? I DO NOT want to update to 8117 because it always auto change my nick to profile name, status to available, and no dp...nor do i want to uninstall 8089 and msgplus.

help plz

right now im using 8089 and windows 7 HP 64 bit

also lets me choose yes/no for the thing but neither option i would choose because both are bad

A:Windows Live Messenger Updates

I am afraid that Microsoft is indeed forcing you into upgrading. Unless you downgrade to Windows XP, you won't be able to use WLM 2009 anymore. I, too, don't like WLM 2011. So, I had to choose an alternative. Feel free to check these alternatives :

- Pidgin (multiclient)
- aMSN (MSN only)
- Digsby (multiclient)

Hope that helps.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:
AMD Athlon ll X4 750K
AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3
Vista SP2
I don't know how to obtain CheckSUR.log.

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:
Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.
You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I have Windows 7 and something appears to be keeping it from finding and installing ANY updates, let alone Windows 10.
No new updates for MONTHS. "Checking for updates" can run forever and not find anything.
I have the Windows 10 icon & the GWX.exe (or whatever it's called), but once I click on it, it disappears.
I did make a USB of the Windows 10 software, but I don't want to attempt that until I know the Windows update (ANY updates) will be fixed through that install, or whether I need to fix that problem first before attempting to install Win10 from a USB or disc.
Did a few run-of-the-mill basic troubleshooting and suggestions, but nothing has worked.
I'm not tech savvy, but I know enough about computers to do some real damage in the really pissed off state I'm in. Sometimes, like now, I'm smart enough to know not to go there and ask around instead.
I tried restoring to the last restore point when Windows updates were working fine. This restore failed, likely due to the fact that the last restore point when updates DID work was months prior.

A:Windows updates problem won't let me install Windows 10 or ANY updates

If you type Services.msc in the Start menu search bar and open the console, search for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update service. They should be set to Automatic (Delayed Start), and they should be Started. If they aren't, right click each and select Start.
If that doesn't resolve it, try resetting the Windows Update components:

Suddenly Windows 7 has stopped installing Windows Updates. It downloads, then creates restore point, starts installation, but then comes back with the error code 800F0900. This happens with all the updates when carried out individually, critical or optional. I first went through the process of clearing all the Start-up Programs in the Services section of msconfig. As that did not solve it I then stopped all but MS services, and that did not solve it.  I tried the Microsoft .NET Setup Verification Tool. This said there were problems that it could not fix and sent a report to Microsoft.  Following an earlier thread on this site, I installed and used the Windows Repair program from Tweeking.com. This failed to solve the problem. Does any one have any other possible advice to help solve this problem ?

A:Windows Updates will not install. Error code 800F0900 for all updates.

I would try running the System Update Readiness Tool:  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858 .

please can you help me?
I run Windows 8.1 and have installed Windows Live Essentials but the install seemed corrupted as I couldn't open the program. The error said that wldlog.dll, wldcore.dll, uxctl.dll were missing. I installed them back using Dll-Files Fixer but the program still didin't work.
I then tried to uninstall Windows Live Essentials with Revo Uninstaller but it said some files are missing. I tried forced uninstall but it failed too, it said some files are missing but didn't say which ones.
If I try opening Windows Live Mail it gives an error, it cannot find an entry point to msmail.dll
I want to completely remove Windows Live Essentials so that I can try a clean re installation but I cannot manage, I think some files are either missing or corrupted and whatever I try fails.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Remove corrupted install of Windows Live Essentials from Windows 8.1

You could simply do a system restore to a point prior to installing Windows Live Essentials. Then try a complete fresh download and installation...

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to help!Firstly, I'm running a Toshiba Satellite with Vista Home Premium 32-bit and sp2..About a week ago I started experiencing redirects when clicking on links through Google. I understood from searches this was the dreaded TDSS Rootkit which seems to be sweeping the nation at the moment. Fortunately I seemed to have been able to remove it, as my searches are no longer tainted (though for the life of me I don't remember what i did, so many different things tried!). Unfortunately, I now seem to be having a seperate issue which I'm unsure whether it is a result of me 'fiddling' with system settings too much or the TDSS still has a hold on me.Average 6 out of 10 times in the past week, when shutting down my computer, it has hung at the Logging Off or Shutting Down screen and will not shut down. In the same instances where this is happening, when trying to install/uninstall a program I receive an error from Windows Installer stating "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.". Clearly a very helpful message if you work in an office with a deicated IT department!I searched this on Google and found this could be a problem with the entry in Services.msc and could be amended simply by changing the setting to 'Manual'. The unfortunate part is when attempting to access Servi... Read more

Trying to install a Silverlight Update, a Java update or other software, I get this window:

What could be the problem ?

A:Windows Installer won't let me install

Go to Control Panel | Programs and Features and uninstall Silverlight entirely, then go to microsoft and download the silverlight package and install it. I have had to do this a few times already, and it is annoying.

The same goes for the Java 6 Update 18.

I keep getting the usual "updates are available" shield on my taskbar, and it's always for the latest update of windows installer 3.1. I've downloaded it 3 times now, and told it to install itself 3 times now, and it always seems to work right, but never really does. It always goes thru its paces and the progress bar goes all the way to the right, but at the very end it ends with a message that says two things, basically: 1) it didn't install properly, and 2) I need to restart for the updates to take effect! Those both can't be right at the same time, obviously!

It must not have installed, because a day or so later the shield pops up again, and it's deja vu all over again!

I read the MS description of the update, and it sounds as if it isn't really worth worrying about! Is that right?

If so, how do I stop windows update from reminding me every other day or so that it's an available update? I want to be reminded; just not for THIS one!

Since I reinstalled My Windows XP my Widows installer seems to be corrupt or gone. I have tried to install it from Microsoft but it will not install. Now Flash, and many other programs will not upgrade or install without the installer. Also I cannot delete many programs without it.

Any suggestions?

A:Windows Installer will not install

There is a workaround to uninstall it, then reinstall on M$ site. There is also a Windows Cleanup Utility to clean uninstall some M$ progs on site. (I'm away so can't give the url's).

I constantly have a Windows update yellow shield on my toolbar (the one showing programmes that are running). When I run it, it is for Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1, but it always says the update could not be installed. And the yellow shield stays. What's this about please and what should I do?

So after I did a repair install of XP for a previous problem I went to Windows Update. It said I needed to install Windows Installer 3.1 to continue. Instead of saying it was done, it said it was unable to install. Then I downloaded the file manually and went to install. It said something about not having permissions, or access denied. I thought it was because my system restore was screwed up, but that's now fixed, so I don't know what the problem is now.

A:Windows Installer 3.1 Won't Install

Are you administrator? If the permissions are screwed up, go into the Control panel and make sure you're an admin.

Ever since I upgraded to the XP Service Pack 2, I've had nothing but problems. The most annoying of which being Windows Installer/InstallShield won't install anything. It appears like it will install, then stops when it says 'Configuring Windows Installer', then I get this message '1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime'

I have checked out the support at the InstallShield website. They address the issue on the site, but none of the solutions help.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any possible solutions.

Thanks in advance.

A:Windows Installer Won't Install

There is a new version of the installer on the windows update page.
Give it a try.
