Solved: Open(double clicking) My Computer Opens Searching "Flashlight" Icon

Q: Solved: Open(double clicking) My Computer Opens Searching "Flashlight" Icon

Hello all,

I have a problem with my Windows XP, and the problem is like the title says, Why when I Open(double clicking) My Computer icon on desktop, it displays searching "Flashlight" icon rather than browsing or showing my folders and drives?

Do you guys know how to fix it?

Preferred Solution: Solved: Open(double clicking) My Computer Opens Searching "Flashlight" Icon

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Open(double clicking) My Computer Opens Searching "Flashlight" Icon

Just googling and found the solution. It's because a Windows service called Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), the solution is by stop and then disable this service from control panel --> administrative tools --> services.

I'm an XP user and I need help desperately. I have a Dell notebook and of late, every time I open "My Computer" and double-click on the C drive or the D drive, the "Open With...." dialogue window opens up. So now if I want to get into my hard drives, I have to right click and choose "Open" or "Explore". This is getting very frustrating and I'm not that qualified to go around tweaking registry items. So can anyone help me out with this? I understand that some people have had a similar problem - the "Search" window opens up when double-clicking the drive icons. By the way, out of desperation, I used the "Fix Folder open.vbs" file and it still didn't work. Any advice will be highly appreciated. Many thanks.

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

For some time now, double clicking on a folder no longer opens it as usual. Instead, double clicking on a folder causes a separate Explorer Search window to open, with that folder's name under the "search in" tab. In fact, when i right click on a folder, the first and bold-faced option is "search", as opposed to "open". So to open any folder I have to right click it and hit open, which is slow and annoying. I cleaned out my registry, spyware, viruses, everything, and still this problem persists. I also checked the Mouse control panel, nothing there.

Anyone know what's going on with my computer?

Open "My Documents", go into Tools>Folder Options and under General>Browse Folders choose Open each folder in the same window. Save that and then goto View>Explorer Bar> and click Folders.

This isn't for me, I have to confess. It's got me stumped, though.

I quote:

"I somehow added some new options to the right-click menu when clicking on hard drives so now when I double click to open a directory, it opens "find" window. Any help on how to solve this?

I tried on a window tools -> directory options -> file types -> Drive -> advanced but I can not remove or edit those action on the list. I can only add or make default but those two don't help."

I don't even have a "Drive" option, so I'm totally nonplussed.

Any ideas, please?

My OS is Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium.

Recently, via Windows updates, I accidentally DLed IE 9. After realizing the error, I went to Programs and Uninstalled IE 9. and now a back to IE 8.

Now, whenever I click on a Desktop shortcut icon to open any of the programs I ordinarily use, instead of the program opening, I get a screen that says: Open With, and then there follows a brief list of programs I have recently used.

This is driving me crazy!!! How do I get rid of the problem, and go back to opening programs in the usual manner [simply double clicking on the icon]?????

Thanks so much if you can help with this. This is so frustrating, and I will go completely mad if I can't get this fixed!

so dont worry also it may be possible that most of your program's standard openers have been forgotten so next time it says open with then you should choose browse, or set the real program as default

Hello All,

I have spent a good amount of time searchin the net, and these forums for an answer to my issue. When I click on "my computer" or go to save/open a file from a program, the computer hangs and I get the flashlight icon for quite a while. I would estimate this to be around two minutes before I can see anything. Microsoft has a support answer for this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819017) but it did not fix my issue.

My computer is starting to show its age, since I built it nearly three years ago, but it is still a good machine, and there is no reason for this to be happening that I can see. Here are the machine specs that maybe useful, as well as the HJT log file:

oh, qwik notes...

1.) I have a M$ intellipoint mouse, and need to have some custom button mapped, so whatever process that uses I need to keep. (I have seen a few posts saying to get rid of this if you dont use it).

2.) my CPU usage does not spike up when this flashlight issue is happening. It seems to stay around 3% or so while it is searching. I dont hear the hard drive going crazy or anything else either.

3.) When I go to device manager, its blank. It simply never shows any devices at all. I even tryed having it show hidden devices to no avail.

4.) When a do a Run-->CMD I get a 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem error: "C:/windows/system32/cmd.com The NTVDM has encounters an illegal instractuon. CS:0555 IP:ffe4 OP:fe ff 1d 09 e9 Chose 'Close' to terminate the application". The CMD window is all jibberish behind this message.

The error message is attached.

If I right click on C: and select Explore, it works fine. Also if I directly run "C:" or any other drive from Start -> Run, or give the path in the address bar in "My Computer", that works fine.

I am using Windows XP Home Edition, SP3

Another error associated with IE started the same time this problem occurred. I am not sure if thats related to this, but I have posted the details of the same in the Internet Explorer Forum.

For some unknown reason, when I double click on an icon on the desktop, to open Opera browser for example, the little hourglass shows for about 10 seconds, disappears and nothing happens. If you right click on the icon, click "open", same thing. It's the same problem if I try to access something inside the control panel. It will eventually open the link, but it takes a long, long time to do so (approximately 2 min.) Any suggestions on how to correct this?

Hello, Im not sure what I have done but this problem seemed to happen literally overnight

As usual I went to double click on my "MY Computer" icon and then went to double click "Local Disk C:" and for some reason "Paint Shop Pro" popped up. I deleted "Paint shop pro" as I dont use it anyway so following that I went back to double click "C:" and this time "Search" popped up (The search that you access from the "Start" menu on your computer to look up files and folders). hmmmm ...

Ive noticed that if I right click on the "C:" icon it brings up the menu (reading from the top)
"Search, Open, Explore" instead of "Open" being at the top of the menu like my other computers. So if I want to access "C:" I have to right click on the icon and choose "open" to get in there, instead of just double clicking it like usual.

Sorry if this sounds confusing. It's never happened before and Im not sure how to rectify it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

From what you describe, it appears to be a flash drive infection. Symptoms include the inability to open drives/partitions.Flash drive infections usually involve malware that loads an autorun.inf file into the root folder of all drives (internal, external, removable). When the removable media is inserted, autorun looks for autorun.inf and automatically executes a malicious autorun.bat file which calls wscript.exe to run autorun.vbs on your computer. When a flash drive becomes infected, the Trojan will infect a system when the removable media is inserted if autorun has not been disabled. Please insert your flash drive before we begin!Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.Reboot your computer when done.Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that is plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection. Then perform at least one of these online Virus scans:(The following require Internet Explorer to work. For years, right up until about one week ago, whenever I double-clicked on a PGP8 encrypted ".sda.exe" file, be it tiny or immense, I always had the passphrase type-in plate appear on the screen instantly.

Starting that one week ago, on all drives, when I double-clicked one of these ".sda.exe" encrypted archive files, I was presented with ridiculous delays between 1 and 3 minutes before the type-in plate for my passphrase appeared on the screen. During this delay, my machine slows, severely, almost to a halt and the drive can be heard during all of that waiting time.

* I've reformatted C:\ and reinstalled XP Professional in an effort to start fresh and maybe remove the problem - it has made NO difference. That's the part that scared me the most.

* I've tried earlier versions of PGP, after fully uninstalling PGP8. No difference.

* I've used every piece of spyware, virus and adware removal I can download and that has made no difference to this problem.

* I've used "MSConfig" to eliminate everything but the PGP software, itself, and there was no difference then, either.

This delay is really worrying me.

BUT.....I noticed, earlier, that, if I start up in SAFE MODE, and double-click ANY of the PGP8 encrypted archive (".sda.exe") files, huge or tiny, the type-in plate for my passphrase appears ABSOLUTELY INSTANEOUSLY, just like they used to! It was so nice to see the type-in plate appear quickly, ag... Read more

I'm not positive exactly what I did, but I can no longer open locations through "Open file location" or "Find location" dialogs. To clarify, there are no errors or notifications of any kind, just a momentary busy curson and then nothing.

If I use the searchbar in explorer to do a search, right click on a file and choose "Open file location", explorer jumps to that location without any trouble, but I cannot open download locations in Firefox, or any other related application. I believe the problem may be related to my changing the target of explorer from "libraries" to "My Computer" using the following instructions from http://www.thewindowsplanet.com/1162/stop-explorer-showing-libraries-launched-taskbar.htm:

To change it to open to “My Computer”, change the shortcut to:

I reverted the shortcut back to %Systemroot%\explorer.exe after noticing problems (and it now opens the libraries again), but now I cannot open directories.

Hi, from today it seems my mouse is occasionally double-clicking if I click something. It is really annoying like if I want to close a browser tab and a few other tabs are being closed as well.

Yesterday I used AutoHotKey for the first time and I have a suspicion that it changed some setting somewhere. The program is not running any more (no tray icon visible) and I have rebooted since I used it.

Can anybody suggest where I could look to solve this problem?
PS: Hope its the right group, I was very unsure which was the best to post in.

A:Mouse occasionally "double-clicking"

There is usually a setting in the mouse properties to control the double click speed.

You can check:
Start > Control Panel > (upper right) View By: Small Icons > Select Mouse
Use the double click slider to adjust the speed.

Or you may have to open the Autohotkey program and make the double click speed adjustment from settings in there.

Or you may need to uninstall the program and do a system restore to a time before you installed it.

I'm using Windows Vista updated within the past 4-5 days.

A couple of days ago AVGFree stopped a virus (it indicated the name was not known) from downloading to my computer. It moved it to the vault and strongly recommended I reboot to remove all traces of the virus. I did so but experienced a problem on the reboot. When the desktop appeared everything was placed where it was supposed to be with some exceptions.

1. The sidebar and all gadgets did not appear.
2. Not all of the icons in the task bar appeared.
3. When clicking on any icons a window opens and asks 'Open with'

I was able to run a virus scan with only two trojans appearing in the sun\java folder (fakeAV). Both files were removed by AVGFree. I rebooted and the same happens.

I tried running System Restore a couple of times and received a message that there were no restore points. On the 4th or 5th attempt there was a restore point, I used it with no difference.

I also tried using the Startup Repair utility with no problems showing.
Could it be possible that when AVGFree removed the virus it also removed some important files that Windows needs to finish the startup process? Or is there something more insidious going on?

Any help would be appreciated.

Why is IE 11 conjoining both URLS ?
If I use Chrome it works (the hyperlink URL loads only )

I thought I was computer savvy until this problem came up. When I double click my computer, recycle bin, control panel, etc, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, goes off, and nothing else. No error messages or anything, just nothing. I have viewed a few of the threads covering this and a common link was the hijack this result. I have posted that here, and really hope that someone can help me with this. I have run SpyBotSD and adaware, I have run mutiple virus scans, I did an SFC, and the final thing was to repair windows using the original disk, none of which has help. I am running Window XP w/SP2. Any other suggestions would be certainly appreciated. Hope to here from someone soon. MTCS, out.

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

Hey, since few days i have a problem regarding internet browsing . if i click a link or open a page there are like 80% chances that a unknown and unauthorised search engine to redirect me to a specific kind of pages with games online or search sites etc. i scanned with my avast home edition antivirus and get a result regarding some trojans. i choose the option to delete them. then i scanned with superantispyware who found something like SYAURISC.DLL Trojan.Agent/Gen-JeJe .

After online scanners with bitdefender and eset. and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware . and 0 viruses on all reports, i STILL have the same problem..

Hi Guys,

I have Firefox pinned to my taskbar, but when I run the program, it opens up another icon in the taskbar to indicate that it's running. The other browser I use does not do that. In fact, I do not remember Firefox doing that previously. It will just "underscores" the pinned icon on the taskbar to indicate that the program is running.

How do I stop Firefox from opening another icon when it runs? Please see image below:

A:Program shortcut opens another "running" icon in taskbar

Right Click on the Taskbar and select Properties. In the option for taskbar buttons make sure the setting is to always combine.

My Email client, MSN Premium (not Hotmail) will not open to write an email when clicking on any website's button labeled "send us an email". Instead this action causes several instances (up to 5) of IE6 to invoke and then the Op Sys (WinME) hangs until I use Ctrl-Alt-Del to end the erroneously opened IE tasks. I thought maybe it was that MSN mail was not my default email client so I used the proceedure to make MSN mail my default instead of OE6 but each time I returned to the options to see if it had changed it still says my default client is OE. Interestingly, if I envoke the MSN explorer and go to my MSN email inbox I can send and receive my email perfectly. This machine has been up and running since last October. I do not know if the problem has always existed or started more recently since I don't often click on "send us email" buttons.
I have three other machines similarly set up and none of them exhibit this problem.
WinMe, MSN Premium, and MSN messenger 6 all are up to date and current.
McAfee AV is on and up to date.
CounterSpy and Spybot are up to date and actively running.
Firefox 1.0.2 is my default browser

Over the course of the last week, I have realized that when I am on youtube and I go to watch a video, sometimes a "Offer" tab will open in another tab on chrome. I have looked around at how to get rid of this but to no avail. Secondly, just today, I have realized that when I go on google chrome and search for something, a "Enhanced Results" section will be displayed just below the search bar and to be blunt, both of these are plain annoying and I would like to have these viruses removed.

A:"Enhanced Results" window when searching & tabs open randomly on google chrome

In addition to these, there is green highlighted text that whenever I mouse over, I get "Ads by Bettersurf". There never was any highlighted text on my computer before. Also if I click on the text, it takes me into a new tab.

I'm working on a laptop for someone and I can't say I've ever seen this before. The default action for double clicking any folder on the computer is to open Search. If I right click on a folder, the bold (and thus default) option is search and the "open" option is a secondary one, but does open the folder when selected. I can't imagine how it got like this and resetting the defaults on every option in the Folder Options area didn't fix it. Anyone know how to fix this very odd problem?

A:[SOLVED] double clicking a folder opens search

okay, quick update. This was most likely caused by the virus that was on it first of all. Secondly, I pinned it down. If I open folder options and go to File Types and find "folder" the default action is Open and Explore is another option. If I click advanced on "file folder" the only action in the list is "find" and that's it. If I hit new to add another action, it wants an application to open it with so I'm not sure how to regenerate the original "open" option.

Whenever I open up "My Computer", I get stuck on a screen that has just the flashlight looking for files.

Whenever I use a drop down menu in programs such as My Documents and even things like MS Word, the comp freezes up. It's as if the directory isn't being listed cos something is stopping it from doing so.

Just an update.
My Compute eventually shows up, after about two or three minutes. It's a pain.

THe computer is brand new. Ocasionally, the left bar, with "Similiar Places" "Details and other things similiar appears, then disappears, and the comp searches again.

Attached is an example of the drives not showing up...
I was lucky the thing didn't freeze after opening the drop down..

Attached an image of the prob.

Recently my explorer changed the way i click on folders from double click to open to single to open (same as internet links), i tried to change it back, but unsucessfuly by using the folder option:
1. Change option
2. Change option, back to single click and back to double click
3. Reset defaults
4. Reset defaults in all tabs in Folder Options.

This is driving me nuts, I've been double clicking forever.
Any suggestions?

I was fiddling around with the folder options > file types a little bit to assign mp3s to winamp and WMP and so on...

I also checked out the file type "drive" and made no changes and clicked OK. Since then, whenever I double click the C drive or D drive, it opens a command window instead of opening the drive. I can right click on it and click Open in the menu though. But why should I have to do that? What has been changed? No, no virus. It only started doing this after I did the above. I anyway scanned the machine using SAV corporate version, nothing found.

I went back in and saw there are only two actions in the advanced section - 'find' and 'open command window here'. None is set as default, but apparently it's executing the 'open command window here' action on double click.

I thought of adding an "Open" action like for other file types, but it wants some program and the path to it to execute this action. What program does it use, I don't know.....please help.

I have ASUS Windows 7 x32bit and I have tried everything on the internet, every time that I try to open a .exe file it will open the "open with" dialog box instead. I have already established that I have not got a virus because what happened was I stupidly selected adobe accidentally when it didn't know what to open the file with and I didn't even say to do it always with this type of file but it did it for them all anyway, so I followed advice of uninstalling adobe and that has gotten me to just a blank icon for every single .exe file because it doesn't know what to open the file with and displays the "open with" dialog box.
Please help I need this computer and this Profile.
Thanks in advance,
PS: Keep in mind that I am not very computer savvy either.

Wish I had a better title, but I wasn't sure how to word this.

Basically what's happening is I have 2 instances of Firefox (different versions and different folder locations) and one of the instances is not opening where it's icon location is.

Example Screenshot:
As you can see. The far left instance does not want to open where it's icon location is.
The far right version always does it.
Even if I unpin the currently working instance (blue/orange icon) to only house 1 firefox instance (grey/black), the grey/black instance will still not open like the blue/orange instance current does (in it's own icon).
Hopefully this isn't confusing for anyone. I searched for a few terms to see if anyone had this problem and nothing came up, maybe I wasn't wording my searches correctly.

Hopefully someone can give some insights.

OE 6 never used to do this, but now when I click "Create Mail", it opens two mail-writing windows. One opens up on the screen, the other settles down into the tray. This started yesterday. The only even slightly irregular things I've done in the last day are:
1.) Change font style, size, and color back and forth a couple of times, then put it back the way it was;
2.) Copied an unfinished email, pasted it into Word 97 and saved it, then later went back into Word, copied it and pasted it back into a new mail message. (I did it that way because I'm not convinced OE 6 will save it as a draft, I'm afraid it will somehow send it anyway, unfinished and not the way I want it.)
