Windows taking up alot of storage.

Q: Windows taking up alot of storage.

Hi, so i recently just bought a new laptop for gaming with a 256gb SSD. I have noticed under storage that its split into 2 drives. (C: and D.
The C: drive is the one using all the space atm and is currently using 65/155gb (i have nothing installed). This is also after i performed a disk cleanup of the drive and removed my windows.old file.
When i go in further its the System&Reserved thats taking up most of it.
Further again and its the system files thats using 47gb. It says these files help windows run and my PC wont work without them.

Anyway im a little concerned that ive lost so much space before I?ve even got into using the Laptop and am wondering what could be using it up.

Any help is HUGELY appreciated and sorry for the long post!

Thanks

Preferred Solution: Windows taking up alot of storage.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for installing the recovery console and downloading and running ComboFix.

The only thing different from the instructions there is that when downloading and saving the ComboFix.exe I would like you to rename it to puppy.exe please.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

ComboFix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished. Read HERE for an article written by dvk01 on why we disable autoruns.

Note: During this process, it would help a great deal and be very much appreciated if you would refrain from installing any new software or hardware on this machine, unless absolutely necessary, until the clean up process is finished as it makes our job more tedious, with additional new files that may have to be researched, which is very time consuming.

Also, please do not run any security programs or fixes on your own as doing so may compromise what we will be doing. It is important that you wait for instructions.

When I am running about 5 programs or windows, and I can feel that my computer is takin a bit to open windows. I CTRL+ALT+DELETE and I find that my explorer.exe is takin about 50% cpu usage. I know that if close explorer.exe then my windows desktop will be gone. I was thinkin that it is because I have a "My Computer" window open, but after I close it ... it persists. I have a P4 3.0GHz @ 3.6 with 1GB of PC3500 Corsair Memory. The Corsair RAM is overclocked to 2.5, 3, 3, 4. It runs 1:1 with processor so I know it can't be hardware. This problem doesn't ALWAYS happen. Help will be appreciated.

Thank You,

I have been having this problem for quiet sometime now. svchost.exe taking up alot of system resources. I have Norton's Antivirus program. I did a scan of my computer it showed up that svchost.dll was a keylogger of some sort. It removed that however my computer is still quiet slow and svchost takes up alot of resource still sort of randomly. It usually only begins to take up alot of system resource while I am trying to play a game or about 5-10 minutes after I play a videogame online. It use to take up alot of resources aswell when I was webbrowsing but after svchost.dll was removed that problem stopped. Also I noticed while the svchost.exe is running around 80-100% CPU capacity i unplug the network line to my pc, it immediately drops back down to 0% but when I plug my line back in it goes back up to 80-100% cpu used. also I am using Windows XP. Also one other thing to note is my norton anti-virus autoprotect is turned off. It won't let me turn it on. I try to turn it on, it turns off by itself.

Hey thanks for the help in advanced,

I just started to notice that my svchost.exe is taking up alot of my memory, more than anything else on my process list, and ive heard reports of others expiriencing this to. I ran a program called "windows worm door cleaner" (wwdc.exe) and it told me that svchost taking up as much memory as it is is because of a virus. Ive ran several programs but none of which seem to solve the problem. In my reaserch i have been unable to find a straight answer/solution so if you would please give me it here i would greatly appreciate it. HJT log posted below, and if possible tell me what else i should remove to better optimize my system. Thanks once again!

Ok so heres my problem. I had my computer connected to my tv through my graphics card. It worked perfectly, but when I rebooted my computer after removing the av cords my windows boot was destroyed and the NTLR was missing. I tried windows repair, but it didnt help. Now I was running a 200gb hard drive, but it only showed up as 189gb when I first installed it, I dont know why but I didnt care, but after I reformatted the hard drive with a win98 disk, then again with an xp disk it only showed up as 127gb. The hard drive is working well but thats alot of missing storage. As my processor is yet to be updated, Im pretty sure thats the reason for the initial crash. But Im at a loss when Im trying to revive my hard drive.

A:Problems with Hard drive- alot of missing storage

The Windows 98/98SE 64GB barrier is not a limitation of the operating system at all. Rather, the barrier is caused by the Microsoft disk setup tools, FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.COM.

Additionally, Windows 98SE has a default limitation of 137GB for ATA interface disc drives. Theoretically, you could then partition your boot drive for 137GB, but a limitation of the Microsoft SCANDISK and DEFRAG programs reduces the practical size to 127GB.

So with this use the windows XP to format the drive

My AMD Athlon Dual Core 4850e has a BIOS problem when I start from a cold boot. This problem does not occur when I restart from Windows (XP Pro SP3).

On a cold boot the BIOS starts and the following dialogue appears:

Initialising USB Controllers..Done
1984MB OK
USB Device(s): 1 Keyboard, 2 Hubs, 2 Storage Devices
Autodetecting Pri Master.. Hard Disk MAXTOR STM3169215A 3 ADD
Autodetecting Pri Slave.. Hard Disk Fujitsu MPE3192AT ED-03-04
Autodetecting SATA1 ATAPI CD ROM: ATAPI iHAS 120 6 7L02
Autodetecting USB Mass Storage Devices..
Device 01:

It then takes over 5 minutes to detect the first USB Device and comes up with:

Generic Storage Device-Hi-Speed

It then detects the other devices normally and starts Windows. I have tried going into the BIOS and disabling the Autodetect Generic Storage Device but this has not solved the problem. As I said previously, this does not happen on a warm boot (Restart). Can anybody help me, please.

I created a Storage pool with the following setup. Three 3TB drives with parity all in an external enclosure with eSata and USB 2/3 ports. It was connected via USB when created and had production data loaded and tested without any issues.
After a few days of use I decided to see what happened when I tried to access it via the eSata port. No luck, due to a driver on the eSata card issue with Win 8. So I powered all back down and plugged back in via USB. At this point the Storage pool went
into the state as per the screenshot below. Any suggestions to either fix the issue and/or retrieve the data that is in the volume?

Your BSODs were triggered by your Avira AntiVir Antivirus, you should uninstall it. The crash was more specifically caused by the termination of a critical system process (probably CSRSS.exe).

I have an older system, P3 900, Win XP 32bit, geforce 5200 video card, 512 M ram. When I first noticed the system clock losing time was a few hours after I booted the PC, so I replaced the CMOS battery. I didn't help. I have two other OS's that I can boot, Unbuntu on a separate HDD and Xunbuntu installed within Windows. Neither OS has this problem. I have Malwarebytes Pro installed, use Avira free antivirus. After being sure they were updated I booted into safe mode ran a scan and found nothing, I used Combo Fix and found nothing. I changed to a different time server to no avail, when I force a time update the time doesn't change. So, I ran a HJT log which follows. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi

Could be many things....

Have you defrag'd your HDD(s)
Cleaned Temp files
Run AV scans
Disabled some Start Up items
Have enough RAM

No doubt there are other things I've forgotten, but that's a start.

Check in device manager and run driver verifier

Please go to start>search>type device manager. (for Win 7 and Vista)

Are there any "unknown devices" with yellow triangles on them?
Is you driver there , listed, and working?

If your driver is missing, or there is a yellow triangle on it, you will need to update it.

I have some problem with my Windows8, that it use alot of RAM when I'm running torrent.
However, my connection speed is 100MBs, so I'm uploading torents most of the time at speed of 10MB/s. On my desktop PC with windows7, everything works just fine ... torrent use only like 100MB of ram and that's all. Total usage of ram is about 1,5GB normally.
Somehow on my notebook with windows 8.1 I have some isues. When I start torrent and it's running for a hour or more, my RAM load get's to 3,5GB of total 4GB avalible memory. Everything is closed, except torrent running and seeding. When I open task manager if shows that torrent is using only 70MB of ram. But after I close my torrent, RAM usage drops from 3,5GB to 1,2GB ... somewhere around those numbers.
I checked on the web about that a bit and users are saying that this is not because of torrent but because windows cache or something like that. No idea wht exactly, but torrent itself is not using that much ram.

So I would like to ask what is using more then 2GB of my RAM, when my torrent is running.
And also can someone help me fix that, so windows won't use so much RAM when torrent is seeding?

Best Regards,
Simon

Hello everyone.
Today I installed Windows 8.1 on my notebook. I have 60GB SSD on my notebook so basicly just for windows and some programs (no movies etc. that's all saved on external hard drive).
However, when I installed windows, it took wery little space. I still had 44GB free.
After updates and installing MS Office, I now have only 22GB free. So I'm wondering, how can some updates and MS office take 22GB of disk space?
Is here anything I can do, to get more space on my computer?

A:Windows updates using alot of HDD space

Hello Symcy,

If you like, you can run Disk Cleanup using step 5 below with at least "Windows Update Cleanup" checked to recover some free space. However, that's not going to use that much hard drive space.
Disk Cleanup - Open and Use - Windows 7 Help Forums
It could also be restore points using up the space if you have system protection set to high maximum space. A restore point is usually automatically created before a Windows Update is installed.

System Protection - Change Maximum Disk Space Usage in Windows 8
Here are some additional items to check to see what may be using up the hard drive space.

Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover - Windows 7 Help Forums
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi,

If i do the following, my computer will freeze

- open my documents.
- open sub folder containing pictures
- (folder opens, thumb nails are displayed)
- go back to my documents,
- open another sub folder also containing pictures
- (folder opens, only icon outlines are displayed)
- go back to my documents
- open sub folder containing photos
- window opens, nothing is displayed, and the window becomes non responsive.

If I select a photo and force it to open with a photo viewer it works and all the missing thumbnails are displayed

my machine is a recently upgraded machine, with a fresh install of XP and very little else.

Any questions/clues/answers would be most appreciated

Thanks

A:Opening My Pictures alot causes windows to freeze

Corrupt Windows install perhaps?

I would start the computer in safe mode, and see if everything works ok.

Also, it would be worth doing a memory test on the machine just to be sure. Download MEMTEST86 (I'm assuming your using a Windows 32-bit, as most people are), burn it to CD as an ISO (Nero as well as the like normally have an option to 'burn image to file'). Then just set the computer to boot from the MEMTEST CD.

When using MEMTEST ensure only one stick of ram is installed when testing. 1 test per ram stick.

If all that checks out, and nobody has any other ideas, then I would definately reinstall Windows as it will only take a couple of hours rather than days and days trying to sort it out.

First of all, the first sign of infection i noticed was windows police pro. It had all these pop ups and stuff and wasnt allowing windows defender to load and a couple anti virus/malware programs too (like malwarebytes). I eventually fixed this by renaming MBAM and then everything seemed fine for a while. Then things started appearing again but it want police pro again. Im not exactly sure what they are but there are taskbar popups talking about anti virus and norton occasionally popup telling me theres an infection in system32. I checked system32 and some of the most recent files are alot of exes and dlls with random character names, Lastly, yesterday when i opened my computer, a command line prompt opened and started running something and thats when i turned my computer off.DDS wasnt working for me so im wondering if i should use hijackthis and upload that log? rootrepeal did work and ive attached that

i just tried install gpedit.msc but i think theres a better way to do it

anyone know how or to do it so i can also start, thanks in advance

A:Windows 7 Starter customizer by disable alot

In my opinion, you'd do better to upgrade from Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Home Premium.

Buy and download Windows Anytime Upgrade: Windows 7 Starter to Home Premium - Upgrade your Windows 7 - Microsoft Store Online

Your computer will only use one browser if you only have one browser installed.

What is the one program that you only want to use? Anything you don't want, just uninstall it.

I ran HJT because when I got home tonight, I noticed I had some windows security thing on my computer screen that said I was infected with 411 viruses, etc etc. I tried to run my symantec virus, but its been disabled by this thing apparently.

Please help if you can, I am going out of my mind, I know this is bad, I can tell from my HJT log. if i run any program with alot of cpu usage and close it my computer stays slow as if i am still running that program so i checked taskmanager it does not show the program but shows pctavsvc.exe using 100% of the cpu usage i ended that process and pc tools antivius says it has a problem and i must restart my computer when i do everything is ok untill i run a program that takes up alot of cpu usage

A:PCTAVsvc.exe takes 100% of cpu usage and windows slows down alot

First: Suggest you download and use Process Explorer, which is a MS SystemInternals utility.

Just look at the screenshot and description on the MS page and you can see it's a much better Task Manager. Note that it does not replace Window task manager, just provides enhanced features like showing exactly which task is loading your system.

Note, the biggest gain is Process Explorer's search. You know, those error dialogs that popup saying "such-&-such DLL has caused an error and ...." Well using search in Process Explorer it will show you what task called that DLL so you have useful information.

Now using PE you have a better method of seeing exactly what is hogging your system. Especially if you enable the following:OptionsHide When Minimized
Allow Only One Instance
Confirm Kill[/B] (default)
CPU History Tray Icon

View, Select columns, Process Performance tab, select...CPU Usage
CPU History
Threads
Handle Count

See screenshots

Now, as to PCTAVsvc.exe, according to a Google search, this is your PC Tools AntiVirus Engine. If it works like Norton AntiVirus, it may be doing a scan, either a Quick Scan (at bootup) or a Scheduled Scan. Suggest you NOT use Scheduled Scans since they can interfere with normal work. Just have a reminder to do a Full System Scan at least once a month.

So I am fixing a computer for a client, and am blow away by the number of issues they let themselves get before they tried to fix anything.

When I got the computer, it would start, and you would only get the cursor and background. explorer could not be run. Period. Any attempt to load explorer.exe or any other exe file was blocked.

So the things I KNOW the computer had were:

-sda64.exe
-braviax
-Windows Police Pro
-desote.exe

So, through a lot of work I now get my icons again, and explorer is.. sort of working. I fixed the EXEs mostly (there was an "Open with..." dialog whenever you'd click an EXe.).
Pretty sure sda64 is gone now, same with windows police pro. Braviax is crippled, as I replaced braviax.exe with a blank read only text file.
Something is preventing SDFix, HiJackThis, Mbam, and everythign else I try from running. I can rename the executables for these programs and get them to start, but then they usually crash after a few seconds.
SD fix crashes after two lines (so fast I can't read them) after hitting Y to start.
HiJackThis crached halfway through a scan, and malwarebytes anti malware never shows up (though shows it's process in the task manager)
If I could just get whatever is blocking me from running the programs to die, then I think I would be home free. SDFix will remove everything that I know I have, but I can't run it due to one more thing that I haven't identified yet.

No logs, as nothing can run. Sorry. :/

Hi guys! Yesterday I was having a hard time burning a dvd. The dvd process would go through and say it was successful, but when the dvd was ejected it was still empty. The burner didnt write the data for some reason, and it wasn't telling me it was failing either. So I started uninstalling the dvdshrink and dvdfab and nero programs, and re-downloading them to reinstall. I did this and my computer started getting slow and wacky. I would go to shutdown and restart and the windows would load as usual until it got to my desktop, explorer will not load up. I have to load explorer through the task manager. Not only that but my AVG resident sheild has been constantly popping up over and over again with infected files, hundreds of them in the win32 and system32 areas. I cannot heal or vault these for some reason. I ran a malware program that removed some, and I can sit through AVG scanning for 2 hours and it comes up with 900+ infections and can only heal or remove 90% of these. I am at a loss for what to do, I just wanted to burn my dvd's!! and all Hell breaks loose on my laptop, help!! Thank you!!

I currently have the Intel ICH9M E/M Sata AHCI Controller, driver version 8.9.0.1023 dated 4 June 2009. Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade to Intel Rapid Storage Technology, and if so, what's the latest version I can safely upgrade to, and do I need to make any BIOS changes?

As usual any help is really appreciated.

A:Can I upgrade from Intel Matrix Storage to Rapid Storage?

I have an Intel ICH9R controller and am using the same driver version. Was not able to find a newer one. I think the newer drivers aren't compatible anymore.
(Windows 7 has been installed few weeks ago.)
