Internet Explorer opens new window and sends all new page requests to that window

Q: Internet Explorer opens new window and sends all new page requests to that window

i couldnt think of how to describe it for the title easily and I am about to go home to maybe tomorrow I will work it out.

My Vista box is currently demonstrating curious behaviour. When I open IE7 I select a favorite and it opens a new window with that favorite in it. If I do a search with my default provider in the original window, the search results appear in a new tab in the second window.

The second window does not display this behaviour. It works normally with my standard settings - open favorites in the current tab.

Again, favorites chosen in the first window continue to appear in the second window. Search results too.

Running IE7 in safe mode stops this behaviour but I have not installed any new software and I have removed all my temporary internet files/addon settings etc.

Any ideas would be great. Funny old game eh

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Since I have to use IE as well as FF I want IE to perform as much like FF as possible. I've set most things to do what I want but when I only have my Home Page open I want a search page to open in a new tab. It doesn't, it takes over my Home Page. Yet links from the search page will open in new tabs. I want to keep my Home Page as it is and open any new pages in a separate tab. The only way I've found to do this is by opening a blank tab first.
Can anyone explain how to do this please?

Windows 7 Home Premium (64), HP desktop. I log on and at start up a window appears and asks for a CD to be put into my CDROM. If I leave it, I can start other program's. Pressing cancel gets rid of the window.
The window says " Please insert your CDROM with the Virtual Truck program. Looking for file:E:\installs\TeraEth\VTruck.exe ".

Can you help me get rid of this? I don't have a CD. It looks like someone was trying to install a program and maybe lost power to the machine leaving it in the wrong state? (I was given the machine some months ago so cannot go back to original owner who is deceased).

I downloaded "Smart Popup Killer" and every since then everytime I click a link that has to open in a new window or a popup comes up, my internet freezes. I've tried deleting the program, still didn't fix it. Is there some kind of corruption in a file somewhere? Can someone please help me out?!

A:Internet Freezes when I click a page that opens in a new window

I'm not familiar with the program, but usually a program will have an 'uninstall' file which is reached through the AddRemove Programs in Control Panel. If you just delete a program, some files are left in your system.

Try to install the program again; then go through proper avenue to uninstall (not delete). If nothing is shown in AddRemove Programs, look in the Popup file for a file labeled 'unwise' or 'uninstall'

My internet explorer has recently started opening a new window everytime I click a link.

The only forums I can find tell me how to make this happen. I say "It already is, but I don't want it to!"

I have verified the following:

- "Reuse window for launching shortcut" is checked in the options form.
- Registry setting for "AllowWindowReuse" is set to "1".

What other settings should I try?

A:[SOLVED] Internet Explorer always opens in new window

Hi Cabbey, Welcome to TSF!

Registry setting for "AllowWindowReuse" is set to "1".

Try changing the 'Hexidecimal' setting to "0" and see what transpires.....this should stop windows from opening links in a new window.
(Don't forget to reboot the computer after making the Registry change so it will come into effect.)

Post back with the results.

Kind Regards,

Hello All!
Let begin by saying, how very grateful I am, for this forum of smart folks, that are always able to have an answer, to all of my rediculous questions. Thank you.
I have chosen to use Google Chrome as my default browser. In my settngs, I've set it to have "access to Internet Explorer." I have also changed some setting in another location, which offhand, I don't remember where/what that was... But the point is, when
I start my computer, a window opens, with IE!! First of all, I don't want a window to open at all, at startup, With IE or GC. I would like to activate a window at my liesure. But the part that, it opens IE is just a pain. I don't know why such thing get on
my nerves. I can't seem to find a place to change the settings, to stop the window from opening, automaticly (and by doing so, the IE thing would go away, automaticly :]).

A:A window with Internet Explorer opens at startup

so IE automatically starts on startup?
go to start > run > and type in "msconfig" (no quotes)
this will bring up another window
Go to the startup tab.
In this list you will see a bunch of programs that start on boot up.  Find the one that relates to IEexplorer and uncheck the box.  Then restart

Here goes - don't even know if I've posted this on the correct forum. Recently, and all of a sudden, when I opened Internet Explorer other Internet Explorer windows would open in the background; they would be adverts from reputable companies, not porn and viagra and all that sort of stuff. These windows would just have the title bar at the top - none of the other toolbars. I installed and ran Spybot Seach & Destroy. Now what happens is an empty Internet Explorer opens in the background, again with just the title bar at the top. I don't know if this affects PC performance but it is annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

Close explorer.
Try going to control panel -> internet options and specifying default page as "blank". Click OK and Run explorer.

I am experiencing an issue with IE 11 where I click on a web link that is supposed to open in a new tab, it does but the original window also goes to that page. I have tried looking in the tabs section and nothing is out of the ordinary. I have gone though the advanced settings and nothing is out of place and I have fully reset IE without correcting the issue. I loaded Firefox and went to the same web page. Firefox also acts weird in that it leaves the original page alone but rather than open it in a new tab it opens the page in a new window. So does anyone know why this is happening and what would effect both browsers but manifest in a different manner in each.

I have tried all of the options. I did the registry thing as per a previous thread in your forum because my windows were opening half screen. Now my windows open smaller but in a different place. Should I add a new value to Window Placement in the registry to denote where the window should open and how big?
This started happening when I chose to show windows side by side.
Have tried maximising and then shutting.
Have tried stretching the screen then shutting.
Have tried stretching it then ctrl/file/exit.

Hi nagswoman,

I don't know if this will work in Vista, but it worked in XP when I had windows tiled and just closed them instead of undo tile. Windows kept remembering the size and position of the tiled windows similar to what you describe.
I opened a couple windows and tiled them, then clicked undo tile. I resized each before closing them, and Windows remembered the size and position after that.
Hope that helps.

When you opena program (for example) Pogo.com (my favorite spot)and you log in pick a game you reach a place that says choose a room. If you click on a room you get a large frame and it does nothing. Everytime when I startup, a windows explorer window opens in the directory c:\program files\common\ this directory contains no files, only a folder called BIN. Probably this directory is referred to by a (removed?) program during my startup procedure, but I have no idea which one. How can I track which program causes this problem? Restoring my system is not an option because I've ignored this problem too long...

Thanks in advance

A:XP opens Explorer Window on startup

Check your Startup folder under Start->All Programs and see if Windows Explorer is listed there. If so, just right click on it and choose Delete.

If the above does not work, I suspect that it's spyware.

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

The default action for double-clicking a folder in Explorer is to open that folder in a new window. The only way to get it to open in the same window is to right click and select Open.

I have looked for specific registry edits, but my only results seemed to only apply to Vista or XP.

Please note that the Folder Options >> Open Each Folder in Same Window is ineffective, and a registry tweak or context menu edit is probably necessary at this point.

I am running into an issue where I can open a window/program with my mouse however once the window is open I cannot click inside of it. The window becomes inactive. I also have noticed I cannot right click on my desktop to bring up the properties. I can right click on the window in the task bar to close it but not in the window.

Since this is happening I am limited to command prompt. I ran sfc /scannow with no errors. I tried with 3 different mice. I booted the computer into safe mode with command prompt and brought up the device manager to show devices not in use, and when the device manager window opened I could click inside it! since I could use the window I uninstalled all mouse drivers, and reinstalled my microsoft wireless usb mouse driver.. while in this safe mode I changed my mouse properties to system default as I read somewhere that can reset things.

Next I booted the computer in safe mode (without command prompt) and still the same thing. I was trying to do a restore point as well however my Kaspersky antivirus 2012 is preventing that as i cannot find a way to kill the program through command prompt.

Now I have no clue what to do! If anyone can help I would appreciate it! either a way to disable kaspersky so i can try a restore or another idea for getting my mouse to work as i really do not want to reformat..

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Seven Forums! inlalaland

First when not able to run the System Restore feature while in Windows the fast alternative is simply booting up from the 7 dvd if you have one and going into the repair tools where the options for using the feature is there along with restoring a full system image backup. You simply use a restore point while booted live from disk.

If you don't have a 7 dvd to boot from the option to burn a repair cd is found in the Control Panel>Backup & Restore section or available at Neosmart Technologies. Windows 7 Repair and Recovery CD Download | The NeoSmart Files

There you would still need to see the disk image burned to a blank cd-r first in order to boot from the new cd. The other tool besides the System File Checker you can try would be the Disk Check tool you can schedule to run from a command prompt since you likely wouldn't be able to right click on the C drive icon to bring up properties>Tools and click on the Check now button under Error checking.

Typing "chkdsk /r" and pressing enter should see a message asking to schedule it for the next startup you answer with a Y for yes or N for no. This can help with any errors on the drive to help to some extent getting Windows to run normally. If the problems however are too severe the option to see a Repair Install or performing a full Clean Install (last resort) would have to be considered.

Nor does this:

Yes, yes, I've checked the Open in same folder option in folder options.
I've used shellex to disable context menu items.
I've rebooted a hundred times.
This is rediculous.  Windows should only recognize ONE setting for this and that is the one in folder options.  Anything else that affects it is a BUG!

And I'm quite frustrated with this.

Earlier today I was customizing icons in Folder Options (I run XP) and I changed the File Folder icon--no other changes whatsoever to the file type--and later I found that when I double clicked folders it opened the Windows search option instead of Explorer. I went back to Folder Options and made sure that "Open in same window" was checked. I fiddled with the action settings and managed to get it to open in Explorer, but no matter I do folders opens in NEW Explorer windows. I tried setting the default action to both explore and open, and neither worked. This is driving me crazy. What can I do?

This isn't a problem but a nuisance. In Windows XP Home, whenever I insert a data CD or ZIP disk, Windows Explorer opens a new window that shows the contents of the CD or ZIP disk. I find this very aggravating and would like to find out how to prevent Windows from doing this. I've tried right clicking on the drive's letter in My Computer and then trying to tell it to "take no action" but that hasn't worked. I've also gone to Folder Options in Control Panel and tried various options. Nothing works however. The reason I don't appreciate having a new window opened is that I use Power Desk, which I like, instead of Windows Explorer, which I hate. Any help would be appreciated.

In XP, if I opened up a folder, I could start typing and the folders/files list view would jump down according to the letters I typed in.

In Windows 7, this does not happen - the focus remains in the left panel (i.e. Favourites, Libraries, Homegroup etc).

Does anyone know if there is a fix to make the focus switch to folders/files when a folder opens?

Hey all, first post!

I work in IT for a hotel management company, and one of our brand new Lenovo desktop PC's (Win7 Pro x64) has an intermittent issue. All Windows Updates have been applied as of yesterday. Sometimes when she logs into her PC in the AM, she'll open Windows Explorer to get to files etc, and it opens to a blank window. If she moves the mouse into that window, it shows the blue spinner like it's thinking, and it'll just sit like that forever. No errors etc. Now, if she hits F5 or selects "Refresh" from the menu, files/folders/drives show up just fine.

It also happened when she went into Devices and Printers to select a new default printer, nothing in that window would show up, no hardware and no printers until refreshed.

I've tried the icon.db fix, and have searched the internet to see what other suggestions there are. This is not a virus/malware of any type. The /sfc scannow returned nothing wrong. I don't have a plan right now, and since this is intermittent, I'm not sure when she'll have this happen again.

Any suggestions? Seems like this is a wide spread issue from what I've Google'd on this topic.

I don't know if this has to do with a virus, but it's been happening since last night and it's got me baffled.

I've ran AdAware, CWShredder, Spybot S&D and a couple of antiviruses, none found anything wrong.
Any ideas about how I can fix this? Any ideas a s to what causes it?

What I want to happen is that the link opens in the window where about:blank is opening, (and with the content displayed and not blank), and not in the tab. Instead I'm getting a blank new window AND the content in a new Tab.
Is this a problem with IE or the html/javascript ?

Sometimes, unpredictably, when using the PC (Windows XP Pro, AMD Duron 700 MHz, 192 MB RAM) for a half hour or so, and working in an open window (could be IE6, Outlook Express, Word 2002, or any application) a dialog box will open *behind* (in back of) rather than in front of the currently open window. I don't mean a pop-up window, but a legitimate dialog box spawned by the current app. This situation makes it impossible to move, close, or otherwise work in the current window, which has lost focus to the dialog box behind it. Since I can't see the dialog box, I can't know what to do with it. The only thing I have found I can do at this point is to press the ESC key to close the dialog box, resize the open window to about 1/4 of the screen, and do the operation again. Then I can see the dialog box, drag it into full view, and complete the necessary operation. Rebooting solves the problem for a while, but then it starts again. No error messages ever appear.
If I were using Windows 98 or ME I would guess that I was running out of "handles" or resources, but this is Windows XP, which is not supposed to suffer from that kind of problem.
Can anybody help figure out what is causing this and what can be done to prevent it? Thanks!

A:Internet Window Opens On Start Up

The 1st link appears to be a site that informs you of your ip address. My guess for that link is that it's setup to display the ip address whenever the computer goes online. Some people want to constantly monitor their ip address and see if their isp is assigning them static or dynamic ip addresses. This is just my guess, but it does tell me what my ip address is.The 2nd link appears to be a local server.Did you get the computer new or did you get it from someone? If you got it from someone, they may have been running a server, and that may be the reason why.Unfortunately, I don't think anyone will be able to test out that link, because every computer is if setup as a server. If your computer is used, look and see if you have these folders on your computerc:\mysqlc:\phpc:\Program Files\Apache Group\If so, then a server is on the computer. If not, then we'll need to do some digging into this further. Also, what OS are you running? And give any other specs you can about your computer.

Go to IE tools/internet options/advanced and make sure the option to automatically check for IE updates is turned off.

Or it might be your antivirus wanting to look for updates Otherwise, there is something else trying to access the internet.

Do an inventory of your programs to check for any likely culprits:

Go to Start > Run msconfig, and see whether there's anything there.

In case of doubt please post back.

It is necessary to determine what's causing this, because in some cases it may even be the sign of a worm or trojan infection.

The reasons mentioned above constitute the most frequent cause of this phenomenon, but for some others, also look at this MS article:

Recently, I discovered that when connected to the internet via Microsoft Internet Explorer or Firefox, the following phenomenon plagues my computer.

Upon visiting an internet site, as you know, a window pane on the task bar encapsulates or describes the site. (For example, as I write this, the task bar's window pane below reads "BleepingComput".)

Each time I connect to a site-- any site-- and linger there, a second pane sporadically and spontaneously appears and then quickly disappears. It's difficult to detect because no new window accompanies the window pane and because it disappears so quickly. Furthermore, this phantom second pane doesn't contain any text. Although it's approximately the same size as the ordinary window pane, only a small white square, approximately a third of the pane's size, identifies it.

The secondary pane suggests some trojan's partially thwarted effort to establish a full, complete connection to a site and to open the accompanying window. Alternatively, it suggests some spyware recording my internet history.

I attach the requisite logs below. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I neglected to add to my first post, I cannot run RootRepeal.exe on my computer. Each time I run it I receive a "Intializing, please wait" message in a gray box and the program remains frozen at that stage indefinitely. I've let it run for hours and it never proceeds beyond that stage. Moreover, it consume the entirety of my computer's available memory and precludes me from using it for any other purpose. Can I add any additional information-- perhaps, a combofix log-- to clarify my problem or to assist a tech person in addressing my problem? If I just need to wait for someone to get around to it, I apologize for the impatience.===========Hello Please note: you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. A:window within window opens small

If you are talking about a program that uses MDI child windows (like many of the Office applications), the "small" (child) windows usually have their own minimize/maximize/close controls in the top-right corner. You can also try double-clicking the title bar of the small window. This will maximize the child window within the parent window.

Hi All,

I am running Windows Vista Home edition and have Mozilla and Windows IE 8.0 installed. Whenever I start up the computer and turn on Mozilla, after a few minutes IE opens a window saying that it is unable to open the window "Favorit". It doesn't conect to the internet, even though it should be able to. This happened before and after I installed IE 8. I've run Symantec Virus Scan with 0 results. I've posted this before, but nobody has been able to fix the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

I was surfing the net trying to get some insight into chrome, since it is new for me. SOMEWHERE, I came across a suggestion, that causes "settings" to open in its own window, instead of a new tab. I tried it, and it worked, After a while, I realized, that when I open history, or extensions, the "settings" link is no longer on the left side of the page. On the settings page, there are no longer links for history and extensions.

So I want to change it back, to open normally in a tab. Unfortunately, I have no idea how I did this, so I can't reverse it! I am sure that it was not related to adding any extension or plug-in either. Does anyone here know anything about how I may have done this. I usually bookmark a page if I try a suggestion from that page. But this time I didn't. Yes, I learned the moral about following "suggestions", It turns out that this one is not very well known. I keep doing searches, but I'm not finding anything.
There's all kinds of posts about chrome opening windows instead of tabs - but it's all tabs that are affected, and it wasn't a choice made by the user. In my case I actually CHANGED something somewhere to get this great feature - just for "settings"!
Any chrome gurus out there with advice (other than reset chrome to original settings)?
Thank you.

I don't remember how long ago I submitted this problem, but it does not appear to have been addressed (or if it has I cant find the reply) I still have field within the properties box which do not have corresponding columns within the Explorer window.
I seems to me to be a real case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing as whoever designed these two items didn't exchange details. This was my original query "

Looks like this is running rampant.

IE opens the page
The page is Active for 1 second
Then it locks up for 20-60 Seconds or so.

Cleared cookies, temp files, history, ran spybot. Nothing.

At least I'm not the only one.

If the answer is on another post let me know. It's difficult to browse around.
