Bios update post issue Thinkpad Y510P

Q: Bios update post issue Thinkpad Y510P

Hello, I've recently installed Windows 10 on Thinkpad Y510 and everything went well drivers and all, but I also did an bios update which I think bricked the laptop. There was nothing but black on the screen, no bios beep or fan spinning. After this I attempted a BIOS flash(Pulled the batter, plugged in the USB did the FN + R combo and after 30 seconds of BIOS beeps I get the attached screen). Has anyone ever seen this before?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, all together, I own a Y510p which has no Windows installed (Ubuntu 14.04 only). Due to some problems with the newest bcmwl modules, I wanted to update my bios (currently: v. 3.05). My question is: Is there a recommended / tested way to update the bios without installing a Windows? E.g.: is there a bootable iso-image that I didn't find? Or, is it possible to use FreeDOS for this task? I'd be happy if someone could give me as precise information as possible on this issue. Thx in advance.

The computer I used was '' Lenovo Y510P ''. There is a '' Nvidia GT755M [SLI] '' as a display card. I have tried both ways of downloading the video card driver from both GeForce Experience and Nvidia driver site. Both kinds of graphics cards are starting to update. Later, the 'graphic driver is installed' part of the screen goes and never comes again. I can not enter Windows when I turn off the computer. I have to take format from scratch. After formatting, Windows automatically loads a graphics card driver in 2017, trying to update the driver again, it stays black on the screen again. I have to format again. With DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) program, I deleted the old video card driver and updated it again. But I met the same problem.I communicated with Nvidia and stated that I had such a problem. They asked me not to install the 388.13 video card driver. That graphics card driver has been loaded without any problems. But I have the same problem with all the video card drivers out there.NOTE: This problem only happens on Windows 10. I can update the display board without any problems in operating systems like Windows 8,8.1.NOTE: I have been having this problem for about 2 months, before I could update my display card in Windows 10 without a problem. The driver I am currently using is: 388.13

Hello all, this is my first time posting here so please forgive any mistakes/oversights. I've just updated my Samsung laptop's system BIOS via their software update program, and my Nvidia GPU (GT 650m DDR3) no longer seems to work. The Nvidia control panel is still there, and it still gives me the option to select which programs use the GPU, but there is no GPU actitivity showing up. Also,I've tried playing Skyrim (which auto-detects the PC's graphics cards) , and the game no longer seems to detect the Nvidia GPU (just the Intel integrated graphics).

My laptop model is NP550PC7, with 6 gig of ram, and an i7 quad core CPU, and the OS is Window 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I've tried looking in the BIOS but I can't seem to find anything related to the GPU or display options. Any help or avice is much appreciated.

Have you updated your GPU with the latest drivers?

Is the Nvidia GPU listed there? If so are there any yellow symbols etc?

I wish they would stop pushing BIOS updates other than at the request and guidance of support, they seem to fail too often and brick far too many systems.       You can usually perform a Boot Block Recovery on modern motherboards, but I do not think Lenovo has implemented that technology on their laptops for security reasons, but you might still check with Lenovo Support to see if they have any options short of replacing the system board.  BTW:   Does your system have the emergency reset hole on the back side of the case, and if so have you tried unplugging it from the power supply, and then pressing it for about 10 seconds or so?  (see item #1 on page 46 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual) Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/s1_yoga_hmm_en_sp40a26742_01.pdf

Welcome to the forum! Your 570 has a special connector for the external floppy, which is what IBM had assumed (at the time) that you'd be using. These can be found on eBay for a couple of bucks, or in your case, a few quid. Hope this helps.

Hi, I have a Thinkpad A30 2652-3WG BIOS v1.03, which I recently revived, installing Windows XP SP3. I noted that the graphics driver required BIOS v1.14 or higher. Having an old BIOS v1.03, I downloaded BIOS v1.19 and tried to update. But no matter what I do, whether I choose the floppy or non-floppy version, or even an older BIOS: When I get to the point where I answer "Yes" to start the BIOS update procedure, I get the error: "System program update is currently disabled. The process has been canceled." I have checked through all options in the Bios setup, as well as in the Thinkpad Configuration tool in the Control Panel, but I cannot find any settings for enabling/disabling Bios updates. The only think I've found, is an option to enable update through LAN, which is enabled by default. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum! A complete shot in the dark on my part, but doesn't cost you anything to try: remove the CMOS (BIOS) battery for an hour, and the main battery at the same time. Keep the machine unplugged throughout this period of time. Before doing all of the above, please make sure that no Supervisor or BIOS passwords are enabled, so you don't get locked out of the system.  Plug everything back and see how it goes. Good luck and let us know.

This might seem bizarre, but the Lenovo EOL portal does not seem to contain any drivers and the BIOS update for this specific ThinkPad. Only the G40 and the G41 were listed in the EOL portal, which seems a little odd to me. I noticed that Lenovo has removed their support page for this ThinkPad (http://support.lenovo.com/ja_JP/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?LegacyDocID=SYJ0-006F21E), so it is not there. Looking a little more, I managed to find the old URL for the BIOS' download link - which was (http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/jp/mobiles/7huj05/7huj05jp.iso, or alternatively in FTP form, ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/jp/mobiles/7huj05/7huj05jp.iso). All of these links are dead and I suspect IBM must have transferred the downloads over to Lenovo's servers, but I still can not find the BIOS anywhere in plain sight. The release date and the naming scheme of the last BIOS update was 17th of April 2008, version 1.04 (7HET17WW, 7HHT13WW) respectively. Has anyone got a clue on where is the working download link at? It would help me a lot for the search, thanks.

Normally I don't do BIOS updates unless there's a specific problem that I want to fix, but Lenovo's updater was so insistent that I decided to perform one this week. Bad idea.\ The computer is in a dock with 2 monitors attached. When the computer reboots, there is no display on the external monitors and the built-in monitor displays this message: "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter." I waited 10 minutes for the "normal startup" to continue. It didn't, so I pressed Enter. Nothing happened. Eventually, I found that removing the computer from the dock allows it to boot, but then plugging in into the dock results in many typeface size issues -- particularly for applications that start at boot time. Further experimentation revealed that I can start the boot process with the computer out of the dock and then insert it into the dock as soon as the chasing dots appear on screen. Generally, this is successful. But it's hardly an ideal solution. Is there some additional update that is needed to make the dock compatible with the computer or is there some way that I can roll back the BIOS update? Thanks!

A:A BIOS update has harmed my ThinkPad P50

Hi,

Please indicate which BIOS version caused the problem.  System Update can lag the version on the download site, so I'd have to guess.

As to roll-back, earlier versions of the BIOS are linked at the bottom of the page.

http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-P-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-P...

There are  security mileposts that prevent rolling back very far, but hopefully one of the available choices will work for you.

- If the UEFI BIOS has been updated to version 1.38 or higher, it is no longer
able to roll back to the version before 1.38 for security improvement.

- If the UEFI BIOS has been updated to version 1.29 or higher, it is no longer
able to roll back to the version before 1.29 for security improvement.

Hi folks can somebody please save my sanity! I'm currently updated to v1.39 which I've acheived by downloading the bootable iso and burning it on a DVD-RW.Is there a newer BIOS update that will work or am I wasting my time? if anyone could send a download link or a solution it would be very much appreciated. The laptop was working fine with a normal SATA drive and there doesn't appear to be anything in the BIOS settings that would stop the SSD from being detected, it's a very basic BIOS.

Hello,

I have an ASUS M3A78-EM motherboard. It's been great, and I've had no problems for a about 1 1/2 years. I've gone though several updates on the BIOS for new RAM or CPU compatibility reasons.

I was on 1602 BIOS version and I was trying to update to 1805 today. I did it the same as I normally do through the ASUS Live update utility. I download the BIOS update, and did the "update from file". It went throught the first two parts with no problem. When it hit the 3rd, it failed. I was still in Vista at this point, and then restarted the computer (like I would do after a BIOS update).

After Vista restarted, the computer does nothing. There is no post, no beeps, no logos, just a blank screen like the screen isn't even hooked up. I figured something like this would happen because of the previous error.

I reset the CMOS by taking out the MB battery and moving the jumpers like it says in the manual. I turned the PC back on, to nothing again. It just turns on, but nothing happens at all. I can't even hold the power button to turn the computer off, I have to unplug it from the back.

I thought ASUS had some "crash free" BIOS thing for their motherboards for failed BIOS updates. (At least that's what one of this motherboard's features are). So I downloaded the BIOS again on a USB stick, changed the name like they say I have to (M3A78EM.ROM) and of course the PC will not read from the USB stick.

So now I'm stuck. Pl... Read more

A:ASUS M3A78-EM BIOS update then no post

Well, that's what you're asking for when you do BIOS updates just because you can. There is always a chance of failure, and usually nothing can be done afterwards. Asus crash free BIOS is very reputable of being just as useful as a vacuum cleaner for actually recovering a BIOS after a failed flash. Marketing trick basically. It probably works in one of ~25 cases.

Booting to Windows took almost 45 seconds longer, opening the start menu was laggy, etc. Something must be wrong with this update, stay away from it if possible! I downgraded the BIOS to 1.10 and everything works fast now. Here is the link to download older A475 BIOS releases if you need to downgrade to 1.10: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/downloads/ds500949

Welcome to the forum! You can't update the BIOS without the battery. Find one that holds at least 5% charge and you'll be all set.  Hope this helps.

I have a type DY20 Thinkpad Yoga 14 and foolishly accepted recommended Lenovo System updates including a bios update. Shoukd have known better. The system will not boot at all now. I started the update from within the Lenovo maintenance system with 90% battery and AC plugged in. When i checked things 30 minutes later after the screen said shutting down i discovered the power button on and function key lit but no action. I just let it sit all night. Today no change and i can power off the system with the button but can't force it to boot. The laptop had been working perfectly before this misguided bios update. The system is out of warranty. Is there any possibility of recovering the old bios or any other recovery method?
