Preferred Solution: Microsoft Security Essentials Install Issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all.

SO at first Microsoft Security Essentials seemed like sweet sweet free AV victory. But then I got some weird virus that was blocking the MSE service, but I fixed that and reinstalled and it was working well for a while. Fast forward to today: I can't play League of Legends (PandoMediaBooster cannot connect to the server) and I can't update Starcraft II (it just stays at 0%). I checked my firewall (all the programs required are on the allowed list) however, when I checked MSE's allowed list, there were no programs listed in the allowed or blocked sections. I can't add or remove programs and MSE never notifies me when a program is trying to access my computer. wtf?

I am a sad panda. Please halp.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.Press Scan button. It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply. The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Downloaded mseinstall.exe, MSEInstall Package version 4.1.522.0 to PC running Windows 7; ran installation wizard and it could not complete the Security Essentials installation. Error code 0x80070643

Clicked link to "Get help on this issue." It said either some other security programs are running or you're missing some prerequisites. Perform the following steps:
Step 1 - remove other anti virus programs
Step 2 - Completely uninstall Windows Live OneCare

I ran appwiz.cpl, removed Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware and manually deleted folders and files left behind. Also downloaded OneCareCleanup.exe, Self-Extracting Cabinet, version; ran As Administrator, it said, "Windows Live Cleanup tool is shutting down;" went to How Do I Uninstall Anti-Virus software; clicked on a link to Microsoft Virus and Malware Forum; found hundreds of posts about problems installing MSE and directions on where to find cleanup tools. I ran several clean-up tools, no change, I still can not install Microsoft Security Essentials.

I would like to create a log file and determine the exact cause for the failure of mseinstall.exe, MSEInstall Package version 4.1.522.0 to install correctly on my real-time, anti-virus free PC . Can someone help me?

A:I can't install Microsoft Security Essentials

I'm running Malwarebytes along with MSE and they do not conflict. Something else you have (or had) could be interferring.

After you uninstalled, whatever you did, you must first restart the PC before attempting to install MSE. If you try without restarting the original problem can still be there.

Last night I found my computer was infected with a rogue security program called "Internet Security 2013".  It was announcing false positives, hogging resources with a fake svchost process, and redirecting google searches.  After running TDSSKiller and Combofix, it looks like I've removed any trace of the rogue program-- at least, there's nothing hogging the cpu or memory, and I'm not being redirected to obvious fake security-related sites.
So here's my problem:  when I was running ComboFix, it asked be to de-activate Microsoft Security Essentials.  When I tried to open the MSE control panel, I got some generic error window (sorry, I didn't write down what it said).  So i decided to uninstall MSE throgh the "add/remove programs" panel.  After running ComboFix, I was able to download the legit MSE installer  from the microsoft website.  I thought I'd be able to reinstall MSE easily, but whe I run the install wizard I get an error message saying the installation can not be completed.
It gives this error code:  0x80070643
I did some searching, and apparently this error happens when you have other anti-virus software installed that conflicts with MSE.  I don't have any other AV software, and I thought I uninstalled my old MSE correctly (it no longer shows up in my add/remove programs window).  I used this microsoft fixit thing to uninstall Microsoft Security Client, but when I try to instal MSE again I ge... MSE just had its real time protection turned on, as I apparently did not verify my Windows genuine status, even though I'm positive I did. I didn't see any button to run a check, so I tried to turn on real-time Security Essentials couldn't turn on real time-protection This operation returned because the timeout period expired. Click help for more information about this problem. Error code: 0x800705b4 So I didn't feel like dealing with this, and just decided to do an uninstall/re-install. When I tried THAT (via add/remove programs in control panel), I got this message: The Security Essentials Installation Wizard is missing a filter manager rollup package needed to complete the installation. To continue installing Security Essentials, you must first download the required package. (I click it, and nothing happens) I googled this problem, and found a possible solution on the Microsoft support forums, which was to do a Windows Update. So I try THAT, and even that won't even load, as I get THIS message: The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context. Talk about annoying. Help is appreciated, because I really don't know what to do now!

I'm unable to install Microsoft Security Essentials. This system experienced an unexpected loss of power after being unplugged from the wall. Microsoft Security Essentials refuses to install exiting with the error code 0x80070645.
I searched Google and came across this Knowledge Base article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2483120, I followed the instructions, and removed the registry keys, however I'm still unable to install MSE. I've also tried the FixIt, but that doesn't resolve the issue either.
I came across HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware Setup, and so I thought "This might be causing that error." However, my attempts to remove this key, and the subkeys fails with the error message : Cannot delete Microsoft Antimalware Setup : Error while deleting key.
After searching Google for Error while deleting key, I came across this Knowledge Base article : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2021860, I followed the instructions and downloaded RegDelNull, however that gives me this error message : A null context handle was passed from the client to the host during a remote procedure call.

My granddaughter received a new computer with Windows 7 as the operating system. I tried downloading Microsoft Security Essentials as her antivirus program however, it just won't install. I have tried using the "run" command when downloading and that didn't work. I then saved it to the desktop and tried executing it from there and it still doesn't install. There is no error message and it appears that it is installing but never shows up in the programs menu or in the add/remove programs listing. Any ideas?

right click on the installer and select "run as administrator"

see if it installs correctly.

I am running XP and it seems to function well with the exception of multiple mshta.exe incidences. I fell victim to the security essentials trojan but Avast was able to catch it before my system was substantially compromised. It seems like most items have been removed aside from the mshta.exe issue.

Exactly every hour, Avast alerts to mshta.exe accessing a location and blocks it. When I check the task manager it sometimes comes up many times. I have taken to ending mshta.exe whenever I see it.

I have run quick and full scans with Avast, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and Spybot. I booted up into safe mode and ran quick scans with all four. I also ran a boot-time scan with Avast. All these scans have come up with no infected files.

I also downloaded and ran panda anti-rootkit both regularly and in safe mode.

Please advise as to how I can resolve this issue.

Probably the Best Free Security List in the World > section 2 has the real time stuff.

In addition if you haven't got them already you would do worse than keep these as permanent add ons to the security you pick.

hey guys, i just heard about this recently after reading another thread and it sounds great.

main points:

- free
- low system use
- created by microsoft (good or bad i guess)
- updated regularly

what do you guys think? i heard it only uses 5 or 6mb of memory and isn't plagued with the bloat and slowdowns other AV software create.

i'm just worried about giving MS too much information on my PC.

right now i'm running avast and this has been pretty decent for me so far, but this MSE sounds like it has promise.

edit: i'll be formatting soon so i thought i'd try it out with a clean system. im considering trying it out soon though.

Hello guys (and girls),I don't give up very easy, that's not really my thing. But this here, is really out of my league.I feel like giving up at this point and leave the Digital Western World to go live in a cave.I am trying over a week now to get rid of Microsoft Security Essentials.I even suspect that there are two different Trojans/Programs running (Security Tool & Microsoft Security Essentials.I think I really tried everything. Running Rkill.exe to stop processes. Ran malwarebytes at least 50 times, threw the outcome away, but it will pop up right after restart. Ran Spybot S&D, threw stuff out of the registry. Nothing seems to help What the programs do is that everthing is considered a virus by one of them (MSE/ST), the Pop-up will say: "firefox.exe is a virus", ctrl+alt+delete+ a virus, etc;* Websites as: Trendmicro Housecall and SuperAntiSpyware are being bloked;* Programs like Ad-Aware and TweakXp are impossible to install;I read a lot of post from people that said that after they ran MalwareBytes, everything was nice and clean again... IMPOSSIBLE! It keeps on popping up, no matter what I throw away. I really am out of possibilities right now.I really am thinking about ditching my laptop (even though I am very attached to it).Especially when I read some scary stuff. When I tried to run Combofix.exe (without helper, figured I have nothing to lose) the .exe removed itself from my desktop saying:"maybe you have some sort of Virut-Virus?&... Is the above enough security or should I be going for an anti-virus program as well?

A:Is Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall enough Security?

MSE is fine.
If you need extra security, Malware Bytes works well with MSE.

Which is better? I have AVG 9 til 2018, full version, but I'm considering MSE. Which is better? Which do you use?

A:AVG 9 Internet Security v Microsoft Security Essentials

If it's working for you, it doesn't matter too much what everyone uses

Personally I use MSE as on access, with MBAM and Hitman Pro for on demand.

Hi all , i have just recently got spyware doctor onto my laptop but i see it says that it also has an anti-virus.I run security essentials and was wondering if it is ok to have the spyware doctor (as it as an anti-virus) running alongside it

cheers joe

A:microsoft security essentials

Absolutely not. Run only one of the two. Suggest MSE. Spyware Dr. is not too good in my book but can be used for additional scanning. Just make sure you get it out of the startups.

A:Do Ii Need Both Microsoft Security Essentials and another AV

... and yet how many people run more than one av?

Read other 9 answers

I have loaded Microsoft Security Essentials onto my main Vista PC, I have removed (I think I have) all other AV programs.
When the PC boots up it hogs the processor (both cores) for some considerable time (can be up to 5 minutes)
I have run bot the quick and full scans from MSE and both have come up clean.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

first of all thanks for one of the best furoms out there, i've been through a few and this is by far the best/

could be a simple question, but i could not afirm it.
does "mse" scan snd protect in coming emails ?

and is there any reason to use any other av program ?

thanks again to all of you who have helped in the past, and of course in the future.

A:microsoft security essentials

No, it does not.

BUT, it will scan all the emails when it does a scan.

There's no need to scan email, only attachments and that is done by all modern antimalware programs as the files are written to the PC file system.

All of the major AV vendors have been telling their customers for several years now that 'email scanning' is no longer necessary, it's a holdover from the early days of AV programs when Microsoft hadn't yet created the API (Application Programming Interface) sets that allow the AV programs to scan a file before any user access (including email programs) is allowed.

I've just completed a clean install of an Acer PC using its Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade DVD (thanks to this community too: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version).

Now it's time to add few useful programs systems will use for security.

I've asked for a suggest on an other community where an expert user (seems he wrote also many wiki articles) answered me to use "Microsoft Security Essentials" only.

Now, I'm not a windows user since many years ago, but a friend asked me if I could re-install Win-7 on its pc, by now slowed down due to many bad apps and so on...
So, I don't know if MS security is a good choice or just it "sucks" compared to other third parties alternatives.

I'd glad if you could give me a feedback for that product.
Thanks in advance!

I know very few technical details in comparison to what that expert likely knows, but I whole-heartedly agree. I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) quite some time ago and have never looked back. There is no such software that is perfectly able to catch absolutely everything, and there is no better security on the internet than in having good-and-safe clicking habits for staying out of trouble -- no click = no trouble -- in the first place. But MSE does as well as any in an overall sense and it can do that without dragging your machine down.

I want to find a good security program/programs that I can recommend to my friends. I have been checking out a website in reference to "Microsoft Security Essentials". Is this a good program to use? Would I need to run any other adware removal tools long with it? I just watched a video at www.microsoft.com/security/essentials. The video advised to uninstall all other antivirus before using. Does this include spyware removal tools like Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware, or can these tools be used along side of Microsoft security Essential? Another question; is their any current tutorial on the removal tools given here on bleeping computer. The ones I see are all outdated. Thanks.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials

Id recommend Microsoft Security Essentials along side with Malwarebytes Antimalware, and Super Anti-Spyware.

I have a question:

Is it recommended to run Microsoft Security Essentials and Norton Anti-virus on the same computer? Is Essentials an anti-virus program or just a spyware-malware program?

Thank you

A:Microsoft Security Essentials

Both are AV programs. It's not recommended to run more than one.

I ditched my paid for KIS 2011 in favour of MSE, mainly because it was causing random BSOD.

Is it just me, or does MSE not do automatic virus updates?

Every now and then I will check for a Windows Update, only to find MSE definitions that need updating.

I have set MSE to do a daily scan. And to check for updates before running a scan.

I have set my Critical Updates and patches etc. to check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.

I have always set my system to do this, because I hate being in the middle of doing something and the popup window "restart now or later" comes up.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials

I have MSE, it will update automatically
It will come via the windows live update, or through MSE itself.
Windows update checks for updates once a day. If there is a MSE update, it will be updated the next time that Update checks.

Hi all,

Just lately I have noticed that evertime I login to my Windows 7, Microsoft Security Essentials is telling me that I may be potentially unprotected! This never used to happen....I scan my pc and it always comes back clean..... just getting this potentially unprotected warning everytime doesn't seem right... I think It's been like this since the flame problem and since microsoft pushed out many security updates on the last patch Tuesday

Is anyone else getting this?

A:Microsoft Security Essentials

Are you by chance using CCleaner? If so, you need to go to the applications tab & uncheck MS AntiMalware.

If that's not the cause, it probably wouldn't hurt to D/L Windows Defender Offline on another PC, make the disk & run it at boot up on your PC:

My license for Nod 32 has recently run out.

I'm looking for a new security solution. My laptop is a few years old at this stage but it's been running nod 32 excellently for years and it hasn't got terrible specs. Its a toshiba equium with 2 GB of RAM with 1.6Ghz Intel Centrino Duo with a 250GB HDD running Win xp SP3.

I've tried avast and removed it after a day. I found it slowed down my laptop an awful lot. I was onlt running itunes and firefox and the thing was hanging like crazy.

I've installed Microsoft Security Essentials and it appears to be running fine at the moment. So basically should I trust micrsoft security essentials as my antivirus software. It comes recommended from a website I've always trusted with reviews howtogeek.com but I'd like to hear peoples oppinions and suggestions.

Should I just go back to Nod 32.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials

If I were you I would either get Avast, AVG or Avira. (when were talking about free versions).Microsoft Security Essentials is good, however its lacking some features. You might want to check the reviews as well.http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/collection/5928/2011_free_av.htmlhttp://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/And you can google some other reviews out there.
