ThinkPad display issue

Q: ThinkPad display issue

Hi, Glad to hear you are happy!
I have a question I hope that you will be able to answer it.

I have had my think pad for about 3 weeks, it is all okay etc etc, except I have this thin line on my screen it can be anywear on the screen from 2 inches to the whole length of the screen. It is annoying as it try to play cursor and is driving me nuts. Would you have any idea what it is, it would be much appreciated if you could help.
Thanking you
Twiljan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I'm not really sure what is going on but when I decided to wake my computer from sleep, it decided to showed this "pixelated" screen while at the same time, being unresponsive forcing a hard restart Attached is a photo of the issue. I would like to find out what caused this issue since it's happened two times already..something to note too is I also noticed I started having problems with the Thunderbolt 3 (i.e. notification with the driver having issues with Windows Creator Update) Any insight would be awesome :b hopefully its only a software issue and nothing more...

Hi guys! Im new to the forum. Found it while researching a display issue that i need more information on. I have limited experience with laptop displays and would like to get some other opinions about what the problem might be. I was going to replace the LCD but decided against it as I have heard a few other ideas it could be. When connected to an external display, it does not replicate the issue. Only affects the actual laptop display. The problem does happen when booting the computer and in safemode.

The ThinkPad in question is an x201s that worked perfectly before I loaned to my parents for about a year to plug into a external monitor. The laptop set next to a dell 19" external monitor maybe 8"-12" away from the laptop itself. (possible magnet issue?)

The laptop works fine otherwise, no hard drive issue.

The screen displays funny color shading. The mouse disappears when you enter the bottom left 1/8 of the screen. I've attached pictures using IMGUR free/junk free image uploading service.

Additionally, now that I'm typing this, the mouse is now view able all over the screen. Previously, it would disappear when entering the lower portion. Now the bottom 1/8 section kind of flickers with a light spot in the middle. See attached pictures.

Any idea what could cause this, or how to repair it? This is still a fairly desirable laptop, and I would hate to lose it. Ive been looking at the new x260's but for some reason, I have a hard time parting ... Read more

Hello fellow P52 owners! I have a problem installing the latest NVIDIA drivers provided by Lenovo (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-P-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-...) If I run the installation package that you can download from above, it will go through, prompt you to restart. After the restart, the NVIDIA driver version is unchanged, the Intel driver does get updated. I am now on 24.21.13.9921 NVIDIA driver version, this package was supposed to update that to 25.21.14.1672. Turns out, the installation package runs the NVIDIA installer in silent mode (using a batch file), and ignores any errors it throws, and just silently continues. If you run the installer manually without the -s switch, it will show the following error:  My P52 has the following specs: i7-8850H and NVIDIA P3200 card, FHD screen, Windows 10 version 1809 (17763, boths builds .168 and .194 same result) I also tried another P52, with the same results: i7-8850H and NVIDIA P3200 card, 4K+touch screen, Windows 10 version 1803. Any other P52 owners willing to try the installation and reporting back how it goes?

There are countless threads and posts with consumers/owners expressing issues with Lenovo ThinkPad workstations which are not delivering on expected (marketed) features/functionality, due to software related issues. Namely:
- ThinkPad Workstations lose support for external monitors when 'awoken' from Sleep mode and/or Hibernate mode
- Switching the graphics card leveraged by the system has no impact on performance (issues persist)
- It seems the only recourse is to restart the affected laptop and/or not use the features and functionality available on the device
--- this is also the most common "solution" presented to users in threads and/or users are advised to not to use multi-monitor configurations outright

Although many systems may be impacted, this post focuses on issues on the ThinkPad P50, the latest Workstation, which happens to have a NVIDIA Quadro M2000M graphics card.
- All BIOS/Firmware/Software is up-to-date as of writing, however, the issue persists

This sort of performance from a modern business-grade workstation is unacceptable.

As an owner of the Thinkpad P50, I would like to see this issue investigated & fixed before 2017 -- given there are threads/posts that go back, even beyond this year. This seems to be a known issue that's being willfully ignored by Lenovo and/or Think Engineering. If the issue cannot be resolved, then Lenovo needs to assume responsibility.

Dear Lenovo Community, we are experiencing major performance drops when chaining 2 Displays using displayport 1.2 on a L540. The performance drops to like 1-10 FPS in windows. We tried to fix the problem with using the newst firmware / drivers and bios update. Turns out it didnt help at all.See attachment for the stats of the machine. The strange part about this is that we are using the exact same setup a L540 (same stats) and same displays, newst firmware, drivers for another employee without any issues. we are using 2x DellUltraSharpU2415 Displays. (chaining from one Display to another with Displayport cables and enabling displayport 1.2) If anyone knows a solution to this problem, please share it. thanks in advance. sincerly /nik.

Received L470 two days ago and immediately noticed a few issues with the display. 1. Screen (full HD IPS, anti-glare) has got a yellowish tint, like the example in this post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and/Thinkpad-E570-has-warm-yellowish-tint-dis...I managed to somewhat correct the yellowish tint by using RedshiftGUI and setting color temperature to 7000K. It's still more yellowish than my other laptops when put side by side, but tolerable for now. I'd love to try out other solutions to this problem.  2. This one is my major complaint. When watching movies, or certain videos with dark setting, screen appears to be too dark for some details to be visible, even at max brightness.  To give you an idea, here is a photo I took using my handphone. (link to photo https://www.dropbox.com/sc/3fsqdu5ztoncwze/AABpthqcCgi7-sY9K_yUZ8ffa )I'll say I can see more details from my handphone than from the laptop screen itself.I've tried playing around in intel graphics setting but nothing seems to work.

I have Dell Inspiron 5547 laptop (Touch Screen, 15 inches, 16 GB RAM and i7 4th Gen processor, Out of Warranty). Some days back, suddenly the display went dim and anything is hardly visible. After some initial investigation, the display chip (may be VGA or LED display chip) on the motherboard appears to be burnt out (may be due to voltage surge). Even the numbers printed on the chip is not readable because of which it is difficult for the local repairing shops to repair this problem.
I think Dell India Service Center doesn't deal with chip level repair and hence replacing motherboard is the only way they can fix this. This will be very costly (considering that the laptop is not under warranty so will have to pay for warranty extension, motherboard replacement and repair service) and time consuming.
Hence, to avoid all this I have come here to seek some assistance.
If there are anyone using the same laptop (Inspiron 5000 series 5547 Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM) then could you please take a clear picture of your laptop's motherboard or if you recognize the display chip then only that should be sufficient. In this case, I can read the chip related number from the image and try to repair it.
What are the charges for buying a warranty for the laptop, motherboard of my laptop and repairing charge?

Request your response and help.

Rohit Kumar

A:Display Issue - Dim Display for Dell Inspiron 5000 (Model 5547) - Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM

You'll have to call Dell about the possibility of a warranty extension;  in the US, it's sometimes possible but will likely run over $300 -- or about what a board replacement would cost.
If you're getting video, the GPU is OK -- and it's more likely the power circuit to the backlight that's bad.  It'll likely cost as much to repair as to replace the board -- though you'll still be putting $300-400 into an out of warranty system, so replacing the system may be a better idea (if you do this, consider buying a 3-year warranty with the next system).

Has anyone else seen this problem? I have external VGA display 1920x1080, in Win10 it is set as primary display. Both Intel and Radeon video adapters are enabled. Most of Win10 "modern" aka "metro" apps (Mail, Store) fail to render correctly when their window is bigger than the built-in LCD (1366x768).At least it looks like this. When I resize these apps more than certain size, the added area does not render and stays transparent or filled by background color.Moving the window around, further resize does not help. This behaviour started in version 1708 and still continues after 1803 update.   Please advice how to fix this. Very annoying. Thanks,Pavel A.

I started having issues yesterday, the day after I installed teamviewer a program that is on my iPad also to remotely control the laptop. At first the screen started freezing when I was in the middle of a Java game. So I restarted the laptop only to have it freeze at the main screen (after login).

The screen would freeze the display would change to a very low resolution (I think). So I kept restarting it only to repeat. Until eventually once past the windows logo the screen would turn black and blank. Sometimes the display would turn on black and blank and other times it would do that after the logo.

A few times I managed to get it to go into safe mode and I restored to a few days ago but it made no difference, I also tried many other things like changing some settings but nothing worked.

So after like 2 or 3 hours I Rolled back and disabled "nvidia quadro nvs 135m" (since I read it might be causing the issue and I should uninstall it which I couldn't), once I disabled it I restarted the computer and made it to the main screen without issues, and I could even load my game. I enabled it again And restarted the computer only to have the same issues so I disabled it again after finally getting into safe mode.

I don't know if it works fine now, I left it on at most for 5-10 minutes without any issues and I never actually logged into the game to see if it works.

I figured out that in my display settings instead of showing my main monitor it only sho... Read more

After a couple months of flawless use, I'm having trouble with my display on this old model.

For a day or so, the display would go dark at random times, requiring a restart, after which it was fine for awhile.

Now it has gone out completely.

The funny thing is is that it's not "completely" out. I can still make out, but just barely, the display. It's too dark to read or navigate, but I can tell the desktop is there somewhere.

I've plugged an external monitor into it and it has worked fine.

I'm hoping it's a simple fix. The battery is very old and won't charge over 15%, and if that is the problem I'll be glad, but this is with it plugged into the ac adapter.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I have an old ThinkPad T500 that I was planning to give to my younger brother so he can do school work.  Running Windows Vista Ultimate.  A few months back, the internal display was acting intermittently, meaning it would not display anything (dark screen) but if you connected an external monitor, it would work fine.  After a second or third reboot, the internal display would come on. This morning I turned it on and the monitor had parallel color lines in various patterns.  I can hear the laptop running and booting up.   After a couple of minutes, I plugged in an external monitor - nothing.  I rebooted the machine and the same color pattern was displaying on the internal display.  This time, the external monitor came on and booted up in 800 x 600 mode.  When I went into Device Manager > Display it shows "Standard VGA Adapter".  I recall that this laptop comes with switchable graphics between the Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (256 MB).  Is the video card bad or is it just the actual display?

It could be both, difficult to say without having the actual ThinkPad at hand.

I don't remember by heart the BIOS settings in the T500, but please try going to the BIOS (press F1 right after turning on the laptop) and go to "Config" and "Display", select only the integrated graph, save and reboot.  Keep us posted how it goes...

Hopefully that would fix the screen problems...

Hey everyone,
I recently ran into the issue that the backlight on my Lenovo Thinkpad W520 for the display wont light up ( i took the LCD and shined a flashlight behind it to ensure that it was being digitized which it was). It worked fine one day until I turned on the laptop and the screen was black. I have reseated all the RAM, bought new cables for the display, a new inverter for the display, and even a new screen. I have unplugged the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS, and tried holding the power button for long amounts of time with the battery and power cord disconnected. Holding the power button down and restarting fixed my Thinkpad T410 when the same issue happened 3 times before, but it wont fix this issue. All of this never happened on the T410 for the 2 years I had Windows 7 on it but now both machines run Windows 10 Pro. I removed the hard drive from the W520 just in case it was a problem with the drive. Also I am testing the screen with the laptop display assembly disassembled. Please help, I am lost as to what I can do.

A:Thinkpad T480 display too dark?

"Too dark" is subjective.  I cannot comment without seeing the screen.  When I have an issue like yours, I prefer to physically take the machine a warranty servicer or dealer.  I can then turn the machine on and we can discuss it while we are both present.  If you return it, you don't have a good way to know if your screen is normal or defective.

Hello! I have just purchased a second-hand ThinkPad T440 with the i5 4300U, Intel iGPU 4000, 8gb RAM, 120gb SSD, & the non-touch TN LCD. This display is far from comfortable. No amount of calibration makes up for the - extremely - poor viewing angles. I know I can easily replace the display with a FHD IPS replacement, but I though a touch screen may be fun.  After briefly looking on Amazon, found this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/FTDLCD-Digitizer-Display-Assembly-ThinkPad/dp/B07FSBZ215 A seemingly good deal I'm sure you'll agree to some degree. I was wondering if this would work in my T440 which did NOT come with a touch display originally. The reason for me believing it will is, the product comes with a whole assembly with the bezel, I doubt Lenovo would bother manufacturing some T440 devices with the required digitiser connectors and some without (it's cheaper to mass produce one motherboard), and it is brand new and without any wear and tear.  If this product is not a good idea, and I was to get hold of a genuine Lenovo ThinkPad T440 touch display with assembly, will it work in my non-touch option device? All help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I can't get my bios to boot from a usb drive, tried every option, read through dozens of articles. the thinkpad doesn't recognize it... are there updates coming or am I just doing something wrong? thanks! any

Hello,I've been running into a fairly consistent problem with my Lenovo Thinkpad P70. It has the Quadro M3000m, and the Xeon CPU option which includes the HD530 graphics. I usually run the graphics in Hybrid mode, since I run into driver compatibility problems running it in Discrete Only.In Hybrid mode, there's some strange behavior. When I use the external HDMI display only, Extended Display, or the internal laptop display only, everything works well. However, when I use "Duplicate Display", it does not work. The laptop display turns on, goes to a very low resolution (1280x720 I believe), and the external display turns off. When I look in the Intel GPU multi-display settings, it says that there are two displays, the laptop display and "virtual display". When I go into the nVidia multi-display GPU settings, it shows that there are three: The Samsung TV (My external display), the internal display, and 'Analog display', which it shows connected via VGA (which is wrong), and also shows a max resolution of this 'analog display' as 1280x720. In the nVidia screen, it shows that while activating the 'duplicate display' mode, the computer tries to connect to both the internal display and this 'analog display' (which is not correct at all), but if I manually disable the analog display, enable the Samsung TV, and then right-click the Samsung TV and click "Duplicate from Display 1", the duplicate display feature works, and the "analog display" disappears from the list. The thing is, ever... Read more

Good morning: I'm trying to know if there is a Thinkpad model with touch and matte screen. In my company we have several Thinkpad:Yoga S1, tactile and matte, with ghosting problems.X 1 Yoga, touch and glossy. I'm looking for a matte display quality as the one existing in other models, not touch, such as T480S.It is or has been a touch Thinkpad model with a matte screen quality? Computers with touch screen you can configure in the Lenovo shop but usually it is not clear if it's matte screen. How can I find models with these features? Very thanks

I have connected a Thinkpad X1 carbon (model:20BS0057AD) to ThinkPad OneLink Dock which further connects to a ThinkVision Pro2820 28-inch LCD monitor using DisplayPort. In order for the display to work through the dock I have to power down and power up the Dock and Monitor for the monitor to receive display signal. Once its working and I disconnect the dock from the laptop and reconnect it back, the monitor will not come on and remain in low power mode with amber light. I then have to go through the power down and power up cycle for the monitor to display laptop output signal or else it will remain in low power mode. Previously was using a Thinkvision L2251p monitor and never faced any such issue. Is there a fix for this issue

Hello, I bought P50 last July with: Intel Xeon CPU E3-1505M v5 @ 2.80GHzNVIDIA Quadro M2000M3840x2160 non-touch Display When I was buying this laptop, I saw that a few people complaining the color of 1080P display was bad, therefore I chose the 4K display. But during this half year I found 4K hasn?t really had a compatible solution with all software, specially I have to use various types of apps. Then the 4K really becomes a burden to me since some apps looks very bad and I often have to switch resolutions for different apps. I just want to know if it?s possible to change my display to 1080P. I don?t care about the color that much, but more the compatibility. I?m still in warranty and want to change display by Lenovo?s after-sales service. Has anyone had similar experience changing it? Or any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.Best,Chen

Hello, I appologize for the vague language, I am a computer novice. I have tried to trouble shoot this issue with no luck. After unplugging my ThinkPad from an HP monitor last night (which was working normally yesterday) the ThinkPad is now no longer detecting the external monitor. I have plugged the monitor into a different ThinkPad and it picked it up fine, so the monitor and HDMI cord are working. I updated the device driver in the display adapters, rebooted the computer and unplugged and replugged the HDMI connector several times to no avail. I believe the system made updates to Windows 10 yesterday. Not sure if that's the cause or not. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a solution? Thanks in advance

Hey everyone,

All of a sudden, my display will flicker, and eventually turn off on my LCD panel. Every time i change the display modes (lcd, external monitor, or both) it comes back for a short time, but then flickers and shuts off. I know it is not a driver problem because the display works with an external monitor. SO, if anyone knows what i should do next.....PLZZZZ tell me, because I WANT MY LAPTOP BACK!!! lol...its like a desktop now.
