I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Does anybody have any idea where to purchase a replacement SSD for a U300s? Have not seen any other laptop using this type of a connector. Any help is appreciated.

A:U300s- SSD

hi gr8bear,

Upon looking the U300s' specs, it uses a 7mm, 2.5in SATA HDD. You will need to get a 7mm, 2.5in SATA SSD for the upgrade like this one:

Vector - 7mm Low Profile SATA 3 2.5" SSD

Edit:
My bad, this is for the U300 not the U300s.

Not guaranteed to be working at your SSD, but worth to try. Please do this method on your own risk.  A few weeks ago my U300S ssd was half dead.Started with constant 100% disk usage and slow performance, then suddenly Windows fell into BSOD. I tried to restore and clean install Windows several time without any success; unable to format the ssd (somehow it was hard-locked).I came into conclusion that this poor thing was gone completely, so i should build a custom made M.2 ssd adapter. Look here: Custom U300S SSD adapterBefore this ssd is completely dismantled, i tried to BAKE it first. Nothing to lose anyway.(I had several good experiences with dead VGA and it worked nicely after i baked it.)The idea is similar with reflow, without any special tools. Do this simple steps.1. Take the ssd out from the laptop. 2. Unwrap the aluminium foil completely.3. Clean the ssd with isopropyl alcohol thoroughly. Make sure no glue or dirt or impurities on the ssd chip/pcb.4. Prepare the OVEN, pre-heat with temperature around 220 Celcius. Electric or Gas oven just the same.5. Use aluminium balls  or cup as support. Do not put SSD directly on the pan !! (see picture below)6. Put SSD into hot oven, let it baked for 8-9 minutes. And then turn the oven off.7. Open the oven door a little bit, let it cool down slowly for around 30 minutes.8. Re-wrap the SSD with aluminium foil and try it on your U300S. Done. Here the results. No more 100% Disk Usage.&n... Read more

Hi there, Llewh -
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

I think these steps might work.

Go to the upper right side (corner) of the screen to bring out the charms menu and go into PC Settings.
Click on PC and Devices.
You should see something related to mouse or TouchPad.
If there is an option, you can disable it.

You can also try these,

Go to Control Panel.
Click on Device Manager.
Find and Click on Mice and other pointing devices.
Select the MousePad and right click on it.
If there is an option then DISABLE it or click on PROPERTIES.
Go to the Driver tab and click Disable.

Update us how it goes.

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad U300s which has died, and of course I don't have current backups. I figure the SSD still has my data, and thought I'd just pull the SSD and read it on another computer, but I don't know what kind of adaptor I need to use. The SSD isn't in a typical hard drive case, it looks more like a memory card with a series of chips, but instead of edge connectors that go into a bus slot, it has a connector to a ribbon cable on one end. You can see a picture on page 58 of the hardware manual: https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_%20u300_u300s_u400_hmm_1st_edition_oct_2011... Does anyone have any hints on how I could read this data? Feel free to chastize me for not making backups :-)

Hi there. Your computer uses a Mini PCIe SSD. If you want to retrieve your data, you will need to buy a Mini PCIe SSD adapter to USB. There are many options for such on Amazon, eBay, etc.

Hello!I recieved (very) used Lenovo U300s from a collegue for 'repair and restore'. Apparently she wanted to try out Linux, and in the process she wiped out the hard drive. After realizing, that Linux does not suit her taste, she asked me to return it to (ioriginal) Windows 7 or 10. And now comes the hard part. The laptop does not come with COA sticker - neither on the underside, not inside (I checked the inside of cover and under the battery). Of course the laptop came without any recovery media, and the owner absolutely ignored making backups. Is the key lost, or is there still a way to retrieve it? I talked with her, and she seems ok with possibly updating to Windows 10, but I still need (I think) to install even for a while genuine Windows 7 to reserve Windows 10 key. Is there any other way to install directly Windows 10 that's genuine? What can I do now?

A:Getting Windows 7 back on U300s after complete wipe

hi Vatharian,

Welcome to the Forums.

If the U300s came preloaded with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit as listed in this datasheet then you will need to do the following:

1. Download a Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit ISO (you can get this on the net) or if you can't find a Home Premium version, any Windows 7 64-bit ISo should do and just create a universal Windows 7 installation disc (see this guide).

2. After getting the ISO, follow this guide on how to create a bootable Win7 flashdrive and use it to install Win7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit on the U300s. If successful, Windows will automatically read the product key in the motherboard and will activate your copy of Windows.

Tip:
Once Windows is installed, you can view the product key using this guide (see Options 2 to 6)

3. After Win7 is installed and activated, follow this guide on how to upgrade to Windows 10 (see Step 3) then activate it.

Note:
You will need to the procedure above to get an activated copy of Windows 10. If you perform a clean install of Windows 10 on first attempt. you will need to start over from the top (unless you have a retail key to activate Windows 10).

Hope this helps you out.

I was dual booting Windows 8.1 Update and Ubnutu 14.04 From the windows disk manager I deleted all Ubuntu partitions and rebooted my notebook. I was immediatlly present with the grub rescue promt. Normally this is a quick and easy fix, by booting a windows USB/CD and repairing the windows MBR.  My problem is I can't access the bios or the boot menu to change the boot order. Nothing I've tried has let me get into the bios to set my USB stick as the first boot option.  Using the small recovery key button on the side of the notebook which normally boots the notebook to the screen where you can choose which drive to boot does the same as the power button. There is no bios flash screen or abililty to press any keys before getting to the grub screen.  I've drained the battery and left over night hoping this would reset the state it seems to be stuck in but that also did nothing.  Here is a short video showing what happens when I boot the notebook http://youtu.be/2FpC2Deuawk

I have read that the normal drive erase is not a good idea for SSD's. I have also read that most SSD manufacturers should have a utility that will allow you to force it to flush deleted data. Does anyone know if this is available thru Lenovo. The SSD controller is a Jmicron but I did not see any utilities on their website.

Hi there,

Using ATI Home 2011 Plus Pack to create full back up image on a bootable media requires multiple DVDs.
The image created is successful, validated with each disc named.

My question is how does one restore that on a machine with a single media drive......because one has to use the boot media drive to start the restore process using the created bootable media DVDs and it keeps prompting to insert Volume 1 & than 2 etc.

How can this issue be resolved…….using a usb DVD drive…….or the same drive ejecting the one not needed & inserting the asked for?

Or am missing some step?

Creating an image on a HDD & restoring with a boot CD is not an issue…..problem facing is when the image is on a media.

Thanks.

A:ATI media image restore?

I hope I'm understanding your question correctly Goodspeed - I take it that you're asking for confirmation that you can restore a multiple DVD Acronis TI image backup using a single optical drive?

If so, yes, once you have started TI from the bootable media, that disc can be ejected from the DVD drive, and TI is running in system memory. When you replace the boot CD/DVD with the first image DVD, you can choose the restore image which has its first section on the DVD, and TI will ask for the next disc in the series each time when it needs it.

If TI did ever need to access the bootable disc again, it would request it. I don't recall that ever happening to me.

Do take the time to verify the backup, it takes a while, but occasionally a DVD can be faulty and you don't want to discover that when you're starting a restore.

i am planning on restoring my HP Media Center 873n pc. I'm doing this because some of the Media Center files are missing and Media Center won't work. I have a few questions:
Which is better, non-destructive or destructive?
I currently have Microsoft Office 2007 installed, is there a way to transfer the whole program to an external hard drive and then "put it back" after the restore is completed?
Will this restore fix my Media Center problem, mentioned above?

My Dell Inspiron 660 desktop PC crashed a while ago and I have since downloaded the recovery and restore media from Dell's website. The problem I have though is that the media I have downloaded is not bootable so I can't use it to setup a bootable USB or DVD. Given that my desktop crashed, I had to download the media via my HP laptop but if one follows the directions on Dell's website about how to convert the recovery files to bootable media, it doesn't really help. The assumption they are making is that one is downloading the bootable media from a Dell machine but I obviously can't do that since it is the Dell machine that has crashed and is in need or repairs. So the question is; how do I get the non-bootable media I have downloaded to be bootable so that I can repair my PC? It looks like the recovery partition on the hard drive has failed since running start-up repair does not work or rather does not fix anything and the PC still can't get into Windows. Can someone please help?

I have never posted on a forum tho i read and educate myself from them all the time. However i really would like to get this process below correct because i dont want to corrupt any hardware from bad drivers.

I purchased an ACER ASPIRE V5-571P and have had nothing but issues with windows 8. I have restored the computer once using acer recovery media but there are still partitions from previous install and i have no access to the original factory recovery partition either. Id like to know how to fully reformat the entire disk and restore the recovery media back to 8.0 with the correct manufacturer drivers and then reinstall my purchased 8.0 pro upgrade without losing my drivers from acer... lastly then continue to and upgrade to the 8.1 Pro finally. As of now when i upgraded to 8.0 pro it deleted all my OEM ACER drivers and factory programs and now windows has replaced with best effort drivers and i dont know what drives should be there and what are incorrect at this point.

A:Need help with Factory Restore using Acer Media and more

What procedure did you use to upgrade to 8 Pro? I've upgraded to 8 Pro several times on several different PC's and not lost any drivers? I just use the Add Features option and enter the 8 Pro code. It sounds like you bought the Retail 8 Pro upgrade Media when you should have just purchased the Pro Pack. Using Add Features just enables the Pro features that are disabled in 8 Core.

Four reinstallation media discs were received with the purchase of a used Dell Optiplex 390 computer. All four disc envelopes say they are Made in China and have the same off-white colored windowed envelopes, unlike authentic Made In USA products that have bright white disc envelopes. The markings on and/or in the inner rings around the disc hubs appear to be very unlike those on similar discs of the same age which are known to be authentic. These circumstances raise the question of whether or not these may be counterfeit discs that contain malware and spyware.

Delltonian,
It is difficult to tell if the disk are counterfeit if they have all the p/n and markings as a regular disk. You can use them to install Windows, I cannot say if they have malware and spyware on it. It actually could be a legit copy. If it does load malware and spyware then you will need to purchase a legitimate disk.

My Vista on a Gateway GT5422E was working great on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007. On Friday, I had no sound at all. I had a few other minor errors also, i.e. ATI Radeon x1550 Catalyst Center will not work. My I-tunes, Windows Media Player or any sound do not work. I re-installed the Realtek Sound Drivers with no luck.

I checked all Windows updates. I did notice that there was Windows Updates on Friday Morning (3 a.m.) which I cannot roll back. My restore does not work at all...says error 0X81000202 "cannot restore to an earlier date". I uninstalled with McAfees Tech support the entire virus/firewall suite, in case this was the problem, also with no luck. Any ideas? I need any help? I hope not to have to restore the the entire OS and lose the installed software/data.

I think this maybe the same situation as a number of people. Linked to a MS Update?

Also I just noticed that under "System" it no longer shows the information for my computer, i.e. Processor, RAM, etc.

I appreciate any assistance.

I am planning to perform a system image restore using the system image contained on four DVD's. I have read Brink's excellent article "How to Do a System Image Recovery in Windows 7". After researching WIN7 Forums for this afternoon and into the evening, I have a question regarding the backup data files option when accessing system image recovery thru the control panel. This assumes that the win7 OS is functional. After many attempts using Mini Tool, Paragon and other software, I have not been able to repair the HDD so the OS will not boot. My only access to perform a system image restore is thru the repair console or repair disk. Does this mean I cannot use the backup option?

My goal is determine if any files lost from the HDD failure are contained in this system image without wiping the files I am attempting to recover. Is there another way to view or recover the files from a system image on DVD? I understand that since the vhd files are on four DVD's they cannot be viewed using WIN7 disk management. Any help will be appreciated.

VHDs can be viewed with Disk Management provided you have a running system. In Disk Management under the Action button you can attach the VHD and then open it in Computer.

I recently did a complete system restore. My computer is working fine. I purchased restore disks from hp. When I do the restore everything goes fine all the way through the restore processuntil the end.\, it says restore complete restart computer. It comes back on goes thru its post a windows screen comes up then another windows screen that says please wait while windows prepares to start. Then there is hd activity (blinking lite) 20 dots across the screen and thats it. Hp says in it's faq that it could take 24 to 36 hours so leave it on. This sounds crazy. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks

Folks,

Running XP Media Centre Edition service pack 3 (in the UK).

Hamluis kindly helped me restore my Media a few months ago so I can now watch tele when I'm computing.

However, now I can only have the tv either as full screen, or as completely minimized. There is no inbetween bit. When I click on the inbetween bit icon in the top right hand corner (don't know its correct name!) Media Centre flies off the right hand side of the screen and the minimized box appears on the lower toolbar. Clicking on the minimized toolbar bit pulls up the menu but it's either back to full screen or remain minimized, can't get it half screen or whatever so I can keep an eye on it in the corner when computing. It was working fine originally, had Media in a little corner of the screen.

Very frustrating! Only thing I can think of is that I tried to install a 22" widescreen monitor a while ago but had to return it since it was faulty so I'm back to the 15" but even when I mess with my ATi graphics card it doesn't seem to affect Media.

Any help would be appreciated, miss my daytime tv....d'oh.

Nicholas

I have an Inspiron laptop & decided to wipe it clean.  After a lot of messing around following all the different instructions on the Dell site that didn't work, I managed to reinstall Windows 10 to the Factory image using recovery media.
Anyway the laptop was working but we turned it off overnight & now it won't boot up.  It stays on the Dell logo, it tried to do a repair itself but wouldn't work.
Any ideas please, this is driving me mad after spending hours on it already.
TIA

Hi,
I recently had to perform a system restore in Win7 Pro. Before this restore, I could play all my media files properly, no problems. Since the restore, every time I open a video file with any player other than VLC, it refuses to play. Even with VLC, the sound is missing most of the time (its pretty random, the sound is there sometimes, and at other times, no sound. But the video always plays in VLC).

In WMP, I get an error - 'Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file'
Jet Audio and iTunes - When I play songs, it looks like it starts to play the file, but no sound, and no progress on the bar (stays at 0:00 sec).

Any ideas as to what is wrong and how I can fix it?

I've got two questions. 1)my windows media player will no longer open and the icon on my desktop has changed to what looks like some type of installation icon-picture of a computer with a horse on the monitor. Ideas? 2) I recently installed DSL internet and everytime I shut down my computer, I have to do a system restore to the last time I used it in order to do any browsing. I'm pretty frustrated with both issues and could use some wisdom Thanks

A friend's girlfriend's HP Split 13 x2 stopped working so it was given to me to fix. I have no experience with Windows 8.1 as I went from 7 to 10. I was told by her that she has no discs or restore/recovery media or Product Key for that matter.
Situation as it exists now
Boot brings this message - HP logo with "Preparing Automatic Repair"Next screen brings this message - Diagnosing Your PCNext screen brings this message - Automatic Repair: Your PC did not start correctly, Press "Restart... You can also press "Advanced options... - Restart and Advanced Repair buttonsRestart just brings me back to the sequence above so I try Advanced OptionsNext screen brings these options - Continue, Use a device, Troubleshoot, Turn off your PCRan Troubleshoot option>Recovery Manager>Windows System Restore does not complete successfully

Is the Product Key saved in the hardware? Can I just do a clean install? If so where can I download a Windows 8.1 ISO? Is there one on MS website somewhere? I can't seem to find anything on the HP support site.

TIA,

Paul

P.S.

I have received so much help from sevenforums.com and tenforums.com and especially love the tutorials!

Yes.

The Windows 8.1 setup will auto detect the product key from the firmware chip and automatically enter it.

I just made a new Complete Factory Restore of my XPS 8700. I used an external WD My Passport drive. I cleaned and reformatted the drive before I started and the creation seems to have been successful.   I wasn't sure how much space it would take so I had this 500GB Passport available. The restore took about 10 GB. MY QUESTION IS : Can I store other folders/files on this drive and it won't mess up the restore function?RegardsJH

A:Dell XPS 8700 BACKUP-RESTORE MEDIA

As far as I know yes, just keep your backup files/folders in a single folder in the root directory.  The restore program should ignore it since I believe its just a generic script that it runs.

I'm trying to help my brother fix a computer that our mom gave him, I'm usually fairly good @ helping him with tech issues but when it comes to Dell computers...I haven't a clue about them.
I need to know ALL the EXACT steps to do a total system restore on a Dell DM051 running Windows XP Media Center, (there aren't any restore disks & restoring to even the earliest restore point in windows itself doesn't fix anything...we suspect it got serious viruses since our mom doesn't know about them). He's done the CTRL+F11 to get to a screen with various info on it but cannot figure out what to select & where to go from there..options that are listed:System, Drives, Onboard Devices, Video, Performance, Security, Power Management, Maintenance, & POST Behavior. Our mom bought it in 2005 & I'm assuming the bios was never updated since it lists as: A02 (10/13/05)...please help, i don't want him to have to go out & spend $'s on a new hard drive & then another couple of hundred more on a new install of XP.

Welcome to TSG.

Your computer uses a hidden partition to restore the computer to the factory settings. Click Here for a link to Dells website for steps to restore your computer. You probably want to use Section 2 on the page.

Recently I have been unable to open Windows Media player, by any method. More specifically, when I attempt to open it, wmplayer.exe will appear in the task manager for a second or two before vanishing. I attempted to "roll back" to older versions, only to find they were equally unresponsive. I updated to the current version again, and found it still didn't work. Attempting to open it in Safe Mode was equally unhelpful.Next I attempted to open System Restore, both in normal and safe modes, only to discover it wouldn't open either. More precisely, trying to open it normally yields no result the first time, but if I try a second time a window marked "System Restore" opens, however the window itself is blank. Right clicking on it enabled me to view the source, which I have posted below. Next, I ran scans with Superantispyware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ . All have given me a clean bill of health.Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.<HTML><HEAD><META NAME="GENERATOR" Content="Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0"><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"><META HTTP-EQUIV="MSThemeCompatible" CONTENT="Yes"><object id=ObjSystemRestore classid="CLSID:fd589b7c-7ce0-11d3-b9e5-00c04f79e399"></object></HEAD><script for=window event=onload><!-... First Many thanks to Forum Admin and Senior members.

I am using Toshiba Satellite A105-S4064, Windows XP Media Center Edition. Last night I had a problem while downloading movie content from www.rapidshare.com. I was downloading the content using Internet explorer (IE 7) . MY system stopped functioning and I tried hardly to restart it 3 or 4 times since everytime when I open Internet Explorer its hanging.

I restored the system to previous check point using Windows System Restore utilities but unable to resolve it..I restored again one more previous check point but still I am facing the problem.

Today I noticed that none of the windows GUI exe files are not running properluy (IE, System restore) and Anti Virus software MCAfee too!.

A best way to describe my system problem is when I open www.google.com in Internet Explorer I couldn't see buttons like "Web" "Images", "Video" etc. But I can see all these buttons in Firefox browser.... I am unable to run any of the .exe software (MCAfee Service centre, Media Player) etc...

I know there is only one option is to format the full system but I am hardly searching is there any way to recover my system because I am seeing the web pages properly in firefox but not in Internet Explorer.

Please help me..

It has affected my media player asw it is now asking for codecs when i go to view mpegs online and I tried system restore in my Win Xp but it tells me that it is not possible.
Help
It's only been like it for 24 hrs but I need it returned to its good working order.
Spybot is useless, Adaware has removed a few spyware files but AVG found a trojan virus and quarantined it but the PC is still not working as it should.
