Unable to use MSIE 8 after Avast! update w/ failed Google Chrome install

Q: Unable to use MSIE 8 after Avast! update w/ failed Google Chrome install

Old (2004) Compaq Presario, Win XP Home SP3, MSIE 8, Avast! Internet Security.  WinPatrol, SpywareBlaster, MVPS Hosts file, frequent scans with Malwarebytes AntiMalware.
Some days ago I ran an offered "emergency" update of Avast! Internet Security and forgot to uncheck the Google Chrome installation.  It took a couple of tries before the update would go to completion.  Immediate result was inability to access the Internet via MSIE 8.  Temporary fix was to "Repair" the AIS install.  That worked a few times, but now it does not (after what appeared to be an unnecessary Adobe Flash Player install).  I've removed AFP altogether for the time being, but that did not fix the problem.  Google Chrome does not appear among my installed programs, so I cannot remove it - but bing.com is now at the top of the R1 section of the HijackThis log.  Could that be blocking MSIE?  I do not use Bing.
When I try to go online with MSIE the program opens, then indicates "this tab has been recovered" (only the first tab, of three) and then closes immediately.  When I try to click on any link, for example in an e-mail message, MSIE opens and immediately closes again (with the usual invitation to report the problem to Microsoft).
I can post the HJT log if desired.
I am posting this from one of the office computers, since I cannot get online at home (e-mail continues to function normally on the home computer).
Thanks for enlightenment.

Preferred Solution: Unable to use MSIE 8 after Avast! update w/ failed Google Chrome install

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Avira refused to update, so I uninstalled and attempted to install Avast! but it failed...

If you uninstalled Avira via Add/Remove Programs only, you might still want to run Avira's uninstall tool to be sure it has 100% uninstalled all tidbits scattered on your drive and in the registry to avoid possible future issues. Here's a link to the uninstall tool download site:http://www.avira.com/en/support/av7_upgrade_tools.htmlAfter running the uninstall tool, Avast probably would have installed OK for you. I run Avast and it sure is quick to notice those remnants of previous antivirus programs during installation. It just thought you might have two AV's on your system------a definite no-no. The AVG, if you're happy with it, could yet encounter problems if there are bits of Avira still in your registry or lurking elsewhere on your pc. I'd definitely run that Avira uninstall tool just to be sure. You might even want to do a search on keyword AVIRA and see if you have any files/folders Avira left, too, and delete them.

I use on XP OS.
Every some times, the google chrome browser displays a rectangle in the top right corner at color grey which is written in style "Google chrome not up-to-date and could'nt to update, and therefore I need to install again", and two buttons: "install now", "later".
If I click on the button "later", so I get a stripe in the upper line in clolor orange that is written "Google chrome doesn't support in windows xp...". I click on the X, and the first message back again after some time.
I installed the browser again without uninstall, and it doesn't help.
I canceled the automatic updates through two places:
1. Two services of google update in services.msc
2. Local group policy within update of google.
What can I do without to switch to another browsers or update to newer OS?

I would say you pretty much answered your own question...you likely will either need to find a browser that still supports Windows XP or update to a newer version of Windows...or live with the possible messages about Google Chrome no being up to date.FWIW, it seems like Firefox will still support Windows XP: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/48.0.2/system-requirements/

I am running Windows XP SP3

I kept getting a message that Google Chrome has encountered a problem and needs to close so I tried to repair it in Add/Remove programs but accidentally removed it.

I have tried to re-install it from Chrome website but it gets to the last few seconds of the download and says it has failed, restarts and keeps going round.

Can anyone help please?

A:Unable to re-install Google Chrome

Try the Alternate (offline) Google Chrome installer. You can get it from the Chrome website. That has all the installer data and doesn't need to download anything.

My current version of Google Chrome will not run nor will any of the installers of Google Chrome. When I download a new version of Google Chrome and double-click it, I get the 'Run' prompt. When I click 'Run', nothing happens. I have run a complete scan of Norton 360, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Super Anti-Spyware Free. Each one comes up clean, no viruses and no infections. What is the next step?

A:Unable to install or run Google Chrome

Hi -This is from the Google Chrome forum as I do not use Chrome (Internet Explorer 8 & 9 work very well for me) -QUOTE -Open your task manager. If you don't know how to do that, here is how: In Windows, you can open it by clicking holding down the CTRL and ALT keys at the same time with your left hand, then while you are still holding them, click the DELETE key with your right hand, the release all keys. It will either launch the task manager or give you a list of things and you can choose task manager from that list. When the task manager opens, click on the process tab and read down the list of processes. They are in alphabetical order. You will see that Chrome is indeed running, probably more than once. Click on the name once to highlight it, then hit your DELETE key. After you have deleted all instances of Chrome, you can go back to your Control Panel > Programs and Features to un-install Chrome.END QUOTE -Hope this helps -

Fresh install of Windows 8, and after uninstall and reinstall of Google chrome, it keeps bringing this up: which is blocked or something.

avast! | Security Center

Which shows it as Malware. It pops up even when Google chrome is shut down, but it does not shut down in running processes where 4-5 instances of it run, you shut them down and they keep reappearing, in order to uninstall Chrome I had to shut them all down quick and hit the uninstall otherwise it would not uninstall due to instances of it running.

I dont know what this is and where its coming from, even with no extensions or addons it will pop up multiple times and sometimes just once, very sporadic and I dont know whats causing it. It never did it before on Windows 7. Various scans with Malware Bytes and Avast bring no results of virus, trojans, or malware.

I am running the latest versions of Avast Free Antivirus and Google Chrome. I turn off behaviour shield and Chrome runs fine. I turn it back on and the Chrome window appears and just hangs permanently without loading. I tried making Chrome a 'trusted process' in 'expert settings', but that didn't help at all. I also tried removing all extensions from Chrome to no avail. I installed Avast after Chrome and Chrome seemed to work prefectly fine for a few weeks, so I have no idea why the problem started. I have read about a few conflicts with Chrome and various antivirus products since recently reseraching this, but have have found no solution that works for me yet. I am running Windows XP MCE 2002 SP3 32 bit. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I'd like to try to get a more detailed log from GMER rootkit scanner.

Let's try this version of gmer. It will be a randomly named executable.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you still have troubles, try running the scan in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

I just formatted my laptop with Windows XP SP2, and since I've misplaced my drivers CD, I downloaded the Ethernet drivers for my laptop, from my PC and transferred it using a CD-RW.
Having installed the ethernet drivers, I activated Windows, and downloaded avast 4.8 Home. I did not do anything else online.

After downloading the installer, when I double clicked it, it showed me the certificate and all, and then the installer started. I clicked Next once... the next screen appeared.. and it vanished before I could even read it. Same thing happens everytime.
I even tried running it as administrator, but it doesn't help.

Please help me. Thanks a lot in advance.

Edit : Also, my Ctr + Alt + Del says "Disabled by administrator", even though I didn't do it. It's just been 2 minutes since I installed Windows.

You seem to not have the correct Windows Installer for the application. The first thing you should do is to run Internet Explorer and type in the address bar: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate and make sure that you click Express to scan for the highest priority updates. It will also look for hardware updates for you. It could take quite a while to download all the updates and install them. After you have everything installed, then try the install for Avast! again.

Turns out the issue was due to the AV Program, after all. It seems it had attempted to remove/block a connection, but didn't do it properly. The connection would not appear in the list of blocked connection, however, an activity log displayed such an attempt. After removing the AV program, Chrome returned back to normal. My AV Program is not re-installed and all is well. Not sure if I should delete this post or leave it be for those who may face the same issue. I'll let the mods make that decision. Hello, I have recently been having issues with my computer following a nasty WoW account hack. After my account was hacked I have been unable to use Windows Update and get a connection error or no result. I have tried to follow the Microsoft help and none of their troubleshooting has helped. I have ran AVG scans multiple times as well as MBAM and sometimes find infections but have them removed. Currently neither show any infections. Rkill also finds nor terminates anything but C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe. Today I am unable to connect to the internet using IE7 or connect to many of my online games, but can connect via Firefox. I have Hijackthis logs if requested. After reading this I realize I gave very little information... Sorry Please feel free to ask additional questions. A:Unable to install Avast due network error.(Win7 Prox32)

Problem still unsolved, any ideas for procedures? I've been able to install avast on my work machine where I run Win 7 Enterprise x64.

I've also tried to run the install as Administrator, but no result with that.

As you can see in the description, Avast tries to download files and there it fails.

Tonight I received the following error message when I tried repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, to update my free version of Avast antivirus:

Error processing packages.

Finally, I gave up trying. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the free version of Avast. The program installed without any problem; however, for some reason I've thus far been unable to install the latest update, either automatically or manually. Although the onscreen indication read "Initializing, please wait," I waited 15 minutes and nothing happened.

Shortly thereafter, I received an automatic onscreen prompt from Avast to upgrade, but after one minute I got the following error message:

Last encountered error:
Invalid File Signature. Setup will terminate.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may help me solve this problem. Thank you

A:Solved: Unable to update Avast antivirus (free version) even after reinstall

Seems to be a common problem: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=106560.0

I was getting the same message earlier, but I just updated a few minutes ago and it worked OK.

Hi, I just purchased this new HP laptop TODAY -- and have been trying to download Google Chrome and set Google as my homepage because I have been working with Google products for the last 5 years and it is my preference. However, in the first instance, I get a message saying I can't download Google Chrome, even though I've verified the download is for Windows 8.1, then it also triggered a virus infection and caused the security software to do a threat scan -- three times!!  In trying to simply set Google as my homepage, when I click on the actual 'set up' button, the screen simply freezes.  It's almost as if Yahoo / HP is not allowing me to choose my Browser and search engine....does anyone know how to fix this??   I've never had this happen before. Thanks!!!

A:Unable to download Google Chrome on Windows 8.1 / new HP lap...

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum. In this particular case, neither HP nor Yahoo prevent the computer from getting Chrome browser. Especially when you mentioned that the security software triggered an alarm, this means that most probably you tried to download a fake copy of the Chrome browser and thanks God the security software prevented it from installing. It is quite common nowadays because this is popular software and fake copies do exist. Sometimes they appear on top of search result in search engines and they do not lead to the official vendor's site but some other server.  Additionally, if this is not the case, your computer might also have already been infected by some pest which redirected your traffic to fake Chrome.  There is only one official place to download this product - Google official site/sub-site Click here  =>  https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/index.html   and  choose Download Chrome blue button in the middle of the page Follow the on screen instructions. Some additional instructions from Google ->  https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95346?hl=en   Here are some other instructions how to set up home page in Internet Explorer http://blog.laptopmag.com/set-blank-browser-home-page For Google, instead of blank page, you need to enter www.google.com  as the page address http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/cha... I have deleted cookies and temporary files. There is sufficient disk space.I have run sfc/scannow and CHKDSK C:/fI do not know if I could do any thing else. Please help. If possible provide me a link which is sure to work so that if that also does not work I might ask some one to dig the problem in my computer.Thanks. Regards-RDSharma

I have a Siemens Gigaset SE87 wireless router (on Tiscali) and managed to get it set up (eventually!) to work with firefox.

I can't get it to work with IE or Chrome though. I can access the router itself on both, but it won't let me change settings or use the internet.

Normally I'm very happy with Firefox but BBC iPlayer insists on using IE to manage downloads, or Windows Media Player if downloaded for a portable device... which also insists on IE!

I would also like to get Chrome working (I assume it's due to the same cause) as I've heard it's pretty good.

I'm not very techy so please help!

A:Unable to use Internet Explorer or Google Chrome

This screams of a firewall configuration issue. What version and patch level of Windows are you using? Is this wired or wireless? If wireless, have you tried a wired connection?

Was having an issue with Chrome not being able to access the internet (IE was working fine from the same machine). I tried clearing cookies and cache, to no avail.
I opted to remove Google Chrome entirely, and then try re-installing it, but whatever has the system hosed is preventing me from re-installing Chrome.

Hi I wanted to see if Google Chrome needed to be updated. Went to "About Google Chrome" and it says updates disabled by adminstrator

How do I fix this.

Running Windows Vista

A:how to update google chrome

I had Chrome updates too disabled. Fixed this by opening

Run > type in "regedit" > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Policies > Google > Update then on the right side there should be something that says "UpdateDefault", modify it and give it the value of 0 to 1. And then go back to Chrome and it should automatically update.

Note: Don't play around with the registry when you're in there if you don't know it quite well. Just enter it to do this steps. Though if you don't feel comfortable editing the registry, perhaps there is other alternative.

Win 7 Prem, 32bit, Sony laptop, IE9, Kaspersky Internet Security

After several attempts, I am unable to install Chrome or FF. The file downloads but will not run. I have attempted to install from Run and Save and execute from downloads folder. Also tried with Revo Installer. Cleaned cookies, cache, etc.

My main concern and that I have a virus, spyware, etc preventing the download. I do not desire to disable KIS to download. KIS shows no program being blocked.

Also tried to download Java and was not successful. Seems I can't download any programs.

I am very content with IE9, but like to walk on the wild side ever so often.

Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks !
