Over 272 million email accounts stolen from Gmail, Microsoft, Yahoo

Q: Over 272 million email accounts stolen from Gmail, Microsoft, Yahoo

A new report shows that hackers from Russia have obtained login credentials for more than 272.3 million email accounts, which are now available for sale in Russia’s criminal underworld, a Most of them are Mail.ru accounts, though the list also includes smaller fractions of Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft email users.
After eliminating duplicates, Holden said he found 57 million Mail.ru accounts, which is an enormous number compared to the 64 million monthly users the service said it had late last year. The database includes tens of millions of credentials from Gmail (24 million), Microsoft (33 million), and Yahoo (40 million), and hundreds of thousands of accounts from German and Chinese email providers.
Thousands of stolen credentials belong to employees of some of the largest U.S. banks, manufacturing and retail companies, the firm revealed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is there any way yet to know if one's own details are amongst those lists? When these sort of things occur it would be useful for people to be able to know if they are affected. Is there any report yet of the form
"Only :
users who were:
infected by .../
using ...as a password/
logged in on date .../
from the country .../
using passwords with no numbers in them/
have had their details caught up in this"?

After confirming a few weeks ago that credit card details for more than 56 million customers were stolen by hackers who managed to breach Home Depot’s security system in a sophisticated Target-like manner, the retail store on Thursday also confirmed that as many as 53 million email addresses were also stolen by attackers, The New York Times reports.
Thus, in addition to being able to replicate credit cards using the stolen card info in order to steal money or place fraudulent orders, hackers might also use the massive email database to target unsuspecting users with various secondary phishing attacks. Specifically, hackers could send email messages containing links and/or attachments to fraudulent websites masquerading like real sites but meant to steal login user credentials for various services, including online banking services.

Apple Device IDs and various other choice bits of personal data were found in a list on an FBI laptop that was breached in March this year. This list contained a LOT of information about each device, including full names, mobile numbers, addresses, and all kinds of other personal tracking data from the devices. Today, AntiSec group released 1 million of those. Peter Kruse, an eCrime specialist working with CSIS Security Group A/S in Denmark tweeted about finding 3 of his iDevices on the list.http://lifehacker.com/5940197/1-million-apple-device-ids-leaked-12-million-total-stolenMore Apple security fail? Or have they willingly given access to the FBI to this information? Interesting.... I don't own iDevices, but a lot of folks do. I certainly wouldn't want my data in a list in anyone's hands.... see post belowI want to add a few updates.  I did a virus scan this morning and while it didn't find anything, it took three times longer than normal.  I followed that with a MalwareBytes scan and it detected three items, all related to Vosteran, which I thought was completely off my computer.  Obviously not.  I haven't downloaded any new things.  Here is what MalwareBytes found the three items listed below.  I am doing a second scan but this time the scan is including the rootkit. Last week I installed WOT add-on extensions to Chrome and IE.  I already had it installed with FireFox (my default.)  I see that two of the PUP items are related to Chrome, which was the browser with which I was having Vosteran problems. I hope I didn't screw anything up running AV and Malwarebyte scans.  Just to be certain, I will run a second DDS scan and post it below. Yesterday when I opened a browser, it went to YouTube on its own.  Malwarebytes Anti-Malwarewww.malwarebytes.orgScan Date: 12/17/2014Scan Time: 7:06:42 AMLogfile: MalwareBytes_Log.txtAdministrator: YesVersion: Database: v2014.12.17.01Rootkit Database: v2014.12.14.01License: FreeMalware Protection: DisabledMalicious Website Protection: DisabledSelf-protection: DisabledOS: Windows 7 Service Pack 1CPU: x64File System: NTFSUser: ToolooseScan Type: Threat ScanResult: CompletedObjects Scanned: 377748Time Elapsed: 26 min, 14 secMemory: EnabledStartup... A:Stolen Email Passwords and various Yahoo Service Issues

As instructed, I ran a DDS scan and am posting a new thread.
A few weeks ago I downloaded a browser hijacker Vosteran from sourceforge when I downloaded Filezilla.  That was taken care of here at Bleeping Computer.  The moderator who helped me told me to change my sensitive passwords and i immediately did so for online banking.  A few days later I was informed that a credit card was flagged as there was some suspicious activity reported.   I contacted the bank and filed a report and they cancelled the card.  The bank caught the activity before they were able to use the card.
A few days later I started having various Yahoo problems.  I have a few Yahoo email accounts.  Last week two of my email account passwords were compromised.  I reset the passwords.  Today, a third account was compromised.  And two days ago someone got into my Wordpress account and I changed that password as well.
As for my Yahoo issues (I use Firefox - Windows 7 OS) 3=4 times now Firefox crashed while I was writing email.  Yesterday I got an error msg after the crash, something about network issues.
I don't know if this has anything to do with anything but I got curious and checked Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Windows Log > System and note HUNDREDS of the same item.  I posted one example of this in my initial "Am I Infected" post.

A database containing details of more than 20 Million users of a Russian-based online dating website has been allegedly stolen by a hacker and made publicly available for sale through an online forum.
A hacker using the online alias "Mastermind" on an online forum used by cybercriminals claims the responsibility of the hack into an unnamed online dating website, according to recent reports.
The leaked credentials are claimed to be 100% valid in a posting to a paste site, and Daniel Ingevaldson, chief technology officer of Easy Solution, said that the list included email addresses from Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail.
"The list appears to be international in nature with hundreds of domains listed from all over the world," Ingevaldson said in a blog post on Sunday.
"Hackers and fraudsters are likely to leverage stolen credentials to commit fraud not on the original hacked site, but to use them to exploit password re-use to automatically scan and compromise other sites including banking, travel and email providers."
The list of leaked data contains over 7 million credentials from Hotmail, 2.5 million from Yahoo, and 2.2 million from Gmail. 50% of the credentials were for people based in Russia, and 40% came from the European Union.

However, it is unclear how the credentials from the dating website were stolen and if the database contained the passwords in encrypted form or in plain text.

I have a weird problem where ppl can't email me or I them.

Like in my yahoo account I can't get an email through to my sisters account which is also in yahoo. She also can't email me....or rather I don't get her emails.

Same in hotmail from her yahoo account..not going out or coming in.

Also businesses can't contact me on my hotmail or yahoo account they get a mailer daemon and the email doesn't come through.

Have I been blacklisted somewhere? I don't send spam or even send huge amounts of emails.
What is weird is that I can email myself ie yahoo to hotmail and the other way around.
I can also get emails from forums or even gamespot etc.

It all started after I emailed curry's about being dissatisfied about customer service but it wasn't theatening or even rude.

Since then I have changed ISP any even use different accounts in yahoo and at the time I wasn't using hotmail at all.
Anyone have a clue??...I have tried turning off all spam filters and before that I configured the filters to let through anything with my sis's name.

Hi Gang,

I have Yahoo Plus. I have a default email account and 4 more separate accounts that I signed up for under the "Free" category. They are currently listed as alternate accounts. I was supposed to have signed up for them under my Yahoo Plus account but something went wrong and I can't do it anymore. (I don't know why)

But that's not my problem. I have to sign out of one email addressand sign in to another email address in order to check mail from that different account. Does anybody know of a shorter way to do this without signing in and out each time?

I've asked Yahoo and they seem incapable of answering or understanding my question.

I have a yahoo mail account that I've been using for many, many years, but today is the day I think I've finally had enough of their "temporary error 14" thing not allowing me to log in for hours at a time, when my other yahoo mail address works fine.

So I'm considering creating a gmail account, since I already have a Google account anyways. I prefer web-based email for my needs. Assuming it's possible and not already taken, I'd like to create a gmail email using the same email name as my primary yahoo name. Of course I would be using a different strong password.

Does anybody see a security issue with this? Is it considered a bad idea to have 2 different email addresses from 2 different sites using the same email name?

A:yahoo and gmail - same email name - bad idea?

I don't see an issue with it, as long as you use a different password, I have 3 different e-mails the same(Yahoo, Outlook, GMail), and have had no issues with security or anything of the sort, all different passwords of course!

I just created a new gmail account, and imported all my old email from my yahoo email account to my new gmail account. All my messages imported okay into gmail, but for some random reason, a bunch of the emails disappeared from yahoo, although most remained. I have no idea why they disappeared, but I didn't want them to get deleted from yahoo. I just wanted them imported into gmail while keeping them on yahoo too.

So now I'm trying to figure out how to export the missing emails from gmail back to yahoo again. I have no idea how to do this and I've been trying to find out how on Google for over an hour now. There seems to be no straight forward way to do this. I find this hard to believe. It took just a couple minutes to go from yahoo to gmail, so shouldn't there be a way to get them from gmail back to yahoo again? I just want to import what's currently in my gmail inbox to my yahoo mail.

Don't ask why - for now i just want to keep a copy of these emails on both yahoo and gmail. There's got to be a way to do this. can anybody help?

When I delete email in either Yahoo mail or Gmail, is the mail physically deleted so that the Yahoo & Google email servers no longer store the email, and the email can no longer be accessed by any means? Or is the email just deleted from the list of email in my account, but the actual email message is still stored somewhere on Yahoo or Google servers?

Comments anyone?

A:Yahoo mail & Gmail: Is deleted email totally gone?

Deleted mail goes initially to the "Trash" folder in Gmail where it remains for 30 days so that you can restore it in the same way that Windows stores deleted files in the Recycle Bin. You can manually delete these 'deleted mails' by opening that folder and then choosing the option to "Empty Trash Now" after which they'll be gone forever. As regards Yahoo, I'm afraid I don't have a Yahoo mail account so I can't help you there, but I would imagine there's a similar option available.

I was here a couple months ago with some questions regarding a possible hack into my computer. I completed the steps someone here provided but during the time it took for someone to respond to my HJT log or possibly before I posted it, one of my email accounts and my World of Warcraft account was hacked and stolen and possible credit card info compromised though so far not used. I now have access to neither email nor WoW account but am in the process of recovering them. I believe they had unlimited access to my system during this time though I was assured my system was most likely clean by someone on here. I timed out on the HJT forum post and never had anyone look it over though now its irrelevant I suppose.I have reformatted my harddrive using the recovery partition on my harddrive, reinstalled all windows updates and reinstalled all security apps. SASW, Mbam etc.I have followed the steps given for scanning my drive for malware, including all safemode scans from the previous forum post just to be sure my system is now clean although before my accounts were hacked, these scans turned up nothing pretty much. However, Is it possible that the hacker who was harassing me (changing wallpapers, duplicating and changing file names, stealing/hacking accounts etc) may have accessed the recovery partition on my harddrive and put malware/hacking tools/keyloggers into it so they reloaded when I did the recovery?Basically I am asking, did I finally get rid of this hacker or do I nee... Hey guys, first time poster here. I've been having a hair ripping issue for a few weeks and I was pointed to this site by a friend so hopefully you guys can help me out.

This all started a few weeks ago when my world of warcraft account was stolen. I called blizzard and my account was on temp lock for a couple days so I also checked a few of my other online accounts such as my ebay account and those as well had been compromised and my passwords changed. I got my passwords reset for those and ran some AV and spyware software and had avast running on my system at all times from then on. The scanners found a few things so thought everything was fine until a couple weeks ago when they were changed again.

I decided to reformat my internal drive and reinstall windows xp which I figured would fix the problem once and for all. Well, I tried to log into wow two days ago and my account password was changed again. I figured since I have a portable hard drive that I store all my data on and always have connected, the logger/virus/trojan was on there. I transferred all the data from the external to my internal, formatted my external, and disconnected it from my computer.

I have been running multiple anti-virus and spyware programs since yesterday and none of them have been able to find anything that would point to what is stealing my information. I've tried Norton av, avast av (which I had the protection on since after the first time I had the info stolen), spybot, rootkit re... Read more

Yahoo Messenger 9 version, yahoo.co.in e-mail, Yahoo answers, etc. do not run/open on my PC. On attempting to log into Messenger 9 I get an error message: “Please click Try Again to re-enter your ID and password. If you have forgotten you ID or password, click Sign-in Problems”.

Earlier they would open only if they were the first programs I switched on when I would start my PC else I would get an error message “Messenger encountered a connection problem. Please check the network connection and then click "Try Again" (81003004)”.

My computer system: AMD 64 3200+ 2.01Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HDD, Windows Professional XP-2, IE 6 with Cookies Enabled, MS Office 2003, BSNL Broadband, Java (TM) 6 update 11, Java (TM) 6 update 7, no Startup programs other than AVG Free version 8. I am based in India.

I have checked with those using the same broadband connection as to not facing any problem with Yahoo.

Yahoo FT Server and Yahoo! Messenger are provided as exceptions in my Windows Firewall. In IE6 under Security Sites I have not blocked any website.

Where could the problem be?

A few weeks ago I inadvertently downloaded a brower hijack program from sourceforge when I downloaded Filezilla.  Broni helped get that off my computer (and did a great job in the process.)  But since then I have been having a slew of other problems, and oddly, most of them are linked to Yahoo email.
I don't know if there is a connection, but last week I learned that a credit card had been compromised.  The bank caught some suspicious activities and declined the purchases (the card is cancelled.)
Since cleaning my computer, I had two Yahoo email passwords compromised.  I reset them and then my Wordpress account was compromised.  I've had 3-4 crashes while writing email in Yahoo mail.  And when I tried to retrieve an old email via searching a keyword, I got a msg that the retrieval was taking longer than usual...and then it stopped and I got a network error.  I don't have these kinds of problems normally.
Out of curiosity, I looked at the event log on my computer (Windows 7) and saw hundreds of the same error msg, which I'll post at the end of this email.  Is someone trying to flood my computer with a constant stream of requests of my computer?  These msgs have been going on for days.
I get a clean report running AVG anti-virus and MalwareBytes.
With all these problems, I am avoiding checking online banking.
Am I infected?
Here's the log from my Event Viewer:

Email addresses and hashed and salted passwords of 65 million Tumblr users are being sold online by ?peace_of_mind,? aka ?Peace?, the individual that recently offered for sale LinkedIn users? data dating back to a 2012 breach.

The account credentials stolen from Tumblr are also old ? according to researcher Troy Hunt, they were stolen in the site?s February 2013 breach.

Tumblr warned about it earlier this month, but neglected to tell how many users are affected.

?We recently learned that a third party had obtained access to a set of Tumblr user email addresses with salted and hashed passwords from early 2013, prior to the acquisition of Tumblr by Yahoo. As soon as we became aware of this, our security team thoroughly investigated the matter. Our analysis gives us no reason to believe that this information was used to access Tumblr accounts. As a precaution, however, we will be requiring affected Tumblr users to set a new password,? they said.

Hi all, To cut a long story short, I my WoW account was hacked and stolen 4 days ago and I managed to recover it (and no, I don't buy gold, visit cheat sites, etc and i have never given any password to anyone). This morning I try and log in and not only has the password changed, but Battlenet & Hotmail are not recognising my 'secret questions' for password recovery and I cannot log in to my hotmail account. I did all the usual checks and scans after I was hacked, with Avast, Spybot and Malwarebytes but nothing came up. Anyways, here is my HJ log. I've had two suspicious things happen to my computer and need help to check if I have keylogger/malware running: (Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, sp1)

1) A month ago, I received a spam mail addressed to me with 8 accurate addresses of my domain, and no phoney ones. One of those addresses is unusual and is not listed anywhere outside my system, and i never use it, so I'm afraid someone managed to take these addresses from my computer.

2) Three days ago, someone managed to logon to my website (different domain than the email addresses) and changed the control panel password, and it wasn't brute force because there were no login failures. This password was in plain text on my computer (I missed to erase it), so I am afraid it may have been stolen if someone else has access to my computer.

Because of these two occurences, I would greatly appreciate if someone can help me to check if there is anything malicious running on my computer.

Thank you very, very much,

Greetings JayoBayo and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary. If you prefer I call you something other than your screen name I would be pleased to do so.===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would also like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise.... Read more

Hi, malware hunters. My father recently got a notice from Vidéotron, his ISP, that his IP address was being used for malicious activity and they asked him to run a virus scan (and get an antivirus if he didn't already have one). I ran a full MBAM scan and Windows Defender as well on his computer a couple of weeks, but he got a second notice from his ISP last week. While going through his bils this week, he found a number of charges on his credit card that were fraudulent. Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.   Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-RootkitPlease download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from here Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and save it to your desktop.Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page.Caution: This is a beta version so please be sur...
