Firefox faces backlash for auto-installing 'Mr. Robot' add-on

Q: Firefox faces backlash for auto-installing 'Mr. Robot' add-on

A curious add-on called "Looking Glass" started popping up on Firefox for a number of users this past week -- even if they didn't give the browser permission to install it. Due to its nebulous nature and creepy description that only said "MY REALITY IS JUST DIFFERENT FROM YOURS," people took to social networks to ask other users and air their concerns. Turns out Looking Glass isn't spamware, malware or any of the sort: it's a promotional campaign for Mr. Robot, a TV series about the life of a cybersecurity-engineer-slash-hacker.

Preferred Solution: Firefox faces backlash for auto-installing 'Mr. Robot' add-on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Mozilla has pulled a "Chrome" by adding a search box to the new tab page in Firefox 31, which reached beta status yesterday and is slated to ship in final form on July 22.
Along with the nine thumbnails representing the user's most-frequently-visited websites, the new tab page in Firefox 31's beta sports a search field near the top of the window. Typing a search string in the box initiates a search on Google, unless the user has changed the default search engine. If the Firefox user has changed the search engine -- say, to Yahoo or Microsoft's Bing -- that choice is also used in the new tab page's search box.

Three days ago, I decided to uninstall a number of programs I haven't used in years.
After getting rid of 7 or 8, I re-considered my decision on Audacity. Consequently, I downloaded and installed its latest version. Afterwards I turned the PC off for the night.

When I booted up the next morning, IE opened all on its own.
"scodef:608%20credat:14337" appeared in the address bar. The error message it displayed read:
"The webpage cannot be displayed. Most likely cause: Some content or files on this webpage require a program that you don't have installed."

I typed in other url's and opened a number of "Favorites" and was able to surf without any problems. Since then however, whenever I close IE it immediately re-opens to the same page and error message.

The version of Internet Explorer I'm running is IE8; the OS is XP sp3 fully patched.
Neither installed security software or online scans show any evidence of malware infection.

Would appreciate your help.

Have you scanned for spyware? If not, download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or AdAware. Read the help files to familiarize yourself with how they work. I recommend you use them both since each tends to find things the other misses. Let them clean up any spyware found.

Then, to be doubly sure, download and run CWShredder and run it (link to the download is near the bottom of the page).

Then get a popup stopper. I've tried quite a few and the best one I've found so far comes bundled with the Google Tool Bar.

As realistic as all of it is, it's FUD targeted to Windows. If you only use legal software and don't browse websites that are not legit, and also are cautious of your e-mail then you don't have to worry about any of that.

Robot City is an old '95 game. Nevermind why I'm wasting my time with it..

I can load the game just fine and everything works except for a small glitch in the display. When I move the mouse it leaves a large square trail behind it and distorts the screen turning it black.

The help file mentions this and I am running the game in 640x480 and 256 color just as it says I should.

Any ideas?

Here is the section of the help file that mentions it:

****************************************************************
7. Video Display Problems
****************************************************************
Robot City requires 256-color mode
Robot City is an 8-bit, 256-color application. In order to view
Robot City, you need a video card which supports at least 256
colors in 640x480 resolution. Robot City requires you run in 256
color mode. Other modes will cause colors to appear incorrectly
and may cause streaking or trails on the screen. If you are not
in 256-color mode, a warning dialog will appear when you launch
Robot City telling you to correct the problem, exit and restart
Windows.

Hello to all.

So, I have been running Vuze for quite sometime. It works for the most part. Although it may take a bit longer to download some things, it works. However, I have not once, ever, got a Green Smiley. I would like to change this.

Let me state I do NOT have access to the router. My landlord allows us to connect to his. I have read up on how to change ports, remove the Windows firewall, and such.

Is this all pointless if I do not have access to the router?

Should I not bother to change this since in a way it does work? Average download time for a film with 50/Seeds/peers is about an hour.

Confused and wanting to learn-

~Nocturnal

A:I want Green Smiley Faces/Vuze

Hi, without being able to get into the router to check NAT or portforward then it will be a problem. If you are only taking an hour to download a film then it's not too bad, you could try UTorrent to see what that throws up if its no better then uninstall it and carry on with Vuze.

I am experiencing the same problem with Windows 7 automatic updates not installing automatically. Like Oldhead I have auto update and all users selected. Unlike Oldhead I have different software. I have three machines with this problem, but I will restrict my post to just one right now. This one machine (Dell studio XPS 8100 -- Dell - Studio XPS 8100 Desktop / Intel? Core™ i7 Processor / 8GB Memory / 1.5TB Hard Drive - SX8100-2777NBC) is running Windows 7 Home SP1 with Webroot (anti-virus). I do not have any of the other software running that Oldhead listed. I have followed JMH's advice. Status = Started & Startup Type = Automatic. I have run SFC 4 times. I have attached the first and last results. I also ran Check Disk. The first results are posted. The Check Disk results are now clear/nothing to resolve.

I do not see any updates from Oldhead yet. What should be my next step? Has what I have done resolved the problem? In other words, were there errors found that caused my problem?

Thank you in advance for the help.

Hey Super Techs -

I would really like some of your ideas and opinions on this statement.

spyware installs itself

Some are of the opinion that it doesn't, that there always has to be a user initiated "avenue," whereas I'm of the opinion that there doesn't necessarily have to be a direct knowingly or unkowingly path taken by the user. That spyware can install itself as a result of normally surfing the internet as in a "drive by download," or as simple as "adware cookies." or even when you don't agree to terms of an offer, and click no , refuse, etc, but still download something malicious, or decide to quit a download you change your mind on, entries to the registry are still placed.......that might be an example of an "avenue," but you know what I mean..

For the sake of the analysis, lets' just say spyware that installs itself whether you have interaction with it or not.

I know your ideas will sort this out for me...........

Mega Thanks,

ps.........was recently chased out of town by Isabel, then without power for a week, you'll be glad to know - all computers AOK....trees & roof not.....LOL

Iobit would be better removed.
Spybot is not generally recommended to be used with Win 7.
CCleaner....there are various views about this type of program.
Unless you are a very experienced computer user this type of program is best avoided.
Used carelessly problems can & do happen.

I have the same version of Firefox and have no trouble with it.

You can ask your question from your browser from Help > Help Contents:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+Help?style_mode=inproduct

For example, you could try installing a previous version, like the one you had before. Here is the link for this:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb...ox?bl=n&s=install previous version of firefox

There could also be an issue with the installation process for 3.0.17.

BTW I advise disabling auto update. Tools > Options > Advanced > Update > When updates to Firefox are found: check Ask me what I want to do.

Hi, the problem is when I right-click to open a google link in a new tab, I'm re-directed to a seemingly random site. It doesn't usually happen if I just follow the link - mostly when I try to open it in a new tab. I'm not getting any hits with spysweeper or Avast. I don't use MSIE. I have pasted below my logs for DDS, DDS Attach, HijackThis, and GMER in that order. Am I infected with something? A:auto-redirect problem with firefox

Nevermind. I ran Malware Bytes with the following results:

Registry Keys Infected:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\__c008127c (Trojan.Vundo) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Folders Infected:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\LocalService (Worm.Archive) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

I'm not having the re-direct issue anymore so I guess it's been resolved. I don't see how to remove this post so I'm replying with what worked for me. Thanks!

My skype sounds like a robot any time I use it. I have tried donloading it from the website, using the skype video app already on my computer and it still doesnt work. Everything else auditory works fine, video, music, etc. But anytime I try to skype it sounds like a robot is talking, lags and is very annoying. I know others are having this problem too but I can't find a solution. I know internet connection is usually the problem but I have tried it right next to the router and it still doesn't work. I then use the app on my phone and it works fine but its really frustrating to have to do that when I just bought this computer not even a month ago. Please help!

Robot txt

On my web site log is a section that gives the Top 10 documents not found. Amongst these is my home page URL/robots.txt. The figures for this last week show that it failed to access on 62 occasions which was 59%

Looking back on earlier logs the failure rate seems to be about 50% to 60%.

Is this important and what should I do about it?
