What number is Phone Dialer calling?

Q: What number is Phone Dialer calling?

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting the Phone Dialler to do what I want it to. I'm trying to get it to prefix all UK mobile numbers (i.e. numbers beginning 07) with the access code 18185. My latest attempt is to save the number in Outlook Contacts in the format (07) 970 111231, and to create a dialler rule for "area code" 07 which dials 18185 plus the area code. This seems to be dialling the access code correctly since it's going to the right service provider, but the service provider is then telling me that the number dialled is incorrect. If I dial the number manually (i.e. if I dial 1818507970111231) then it works fine.

What do you think is going wrong?

How do I tell exactly what Windows Dialler is dialling? Is there a log file of similar?

Thanks - Rowan

Preferred Solution: What number is Phone Dialer calling?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: What number is Phone Dialer calling?

So, I'll be honest, and admit that I've never toyed with Windows Dialler. However, I've a suggestion/thought, that might work: add 18185 to the beginning of all dialed numbers. If that's an 'internal' access code (i.e: enabling you to call out, or whatever), then toss a "p" in there (i.e: 18185p07970111231).

Hey I am wondering if there is a way a friend can call me via their phone to my PC because their internet goes out much and I have no phone.

Is there a great service I can sign up for?

I am in USA he in Australia, I would like to make it as cheap as possible for him possible saving him lots of money on the calling cards he used.

Yahoo lets you choose an area code for a place, though it doesnt offer Australia.
Is there a way to sign up for a service so I could get my PC to have a number with his area code and australian number so he call me for dirt cheap?

A:Phone Calling Software

This might work for your friend and yourself:

http://www.skynet-tel.com/

http://www.skynet-tel.com/605/broadband_phone_products.html

""What is a Virtual Phone Number?
A Virtual Phone Number is a number you choose (in the U.S., or many countries around the world) that you can receive calls from. Depending on the SkyNET services you use, you can receive these calls on any phone or computer you designate anywhere in the world. If you move around, they can be directed to follow you. If you select the option to receive a Virtual Phone Number, you will be given a choice of numbers from a selection that will immediately become active upon completion of your order.""
I was not able to tell if it would work from Australia to the US, but since those are two of the main countries I would think it is going to work, whichever plan they choose.

You would need the Virtual Phone Number bit, so there would be a slight additional cost....maybe you could pay for that. Hope this helps. There are many services like this....Google results:

http://www.google.com/search?source...+low+cost+international+calling+over+Internet

You will have to read through to find something....it can be beneficial to narrow the search down to Phone to PC call services...or something like that. My search results are pretty broad range....

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double-click on the System icon. On the Performance tab click File System. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore. Click OK. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart Windows. When we have confirmed that your log file is clean, you may enable System Restore again by following the same steps as above ... Read more

Hi,

I have Comcast, both internet and phone service. My laptop runs off a wireless router. I tried using dialer.exe and when i click talk (after I dial the number I want to call) it says connected but really nothings happening.

I have a Compaq Presario c304nr (c300 series). I even tried plugging a regular phone cable from my computer into the back of the cable router where the regular house phone runs off. (there are two slots for it) Still I got nothing.

There is a HDaudio soft data fax modem with smartCP installed. Is that sufficient? (also a broadcom and realtek driver/device) I did download Skype, However, before I forked out a whopping 3 bucks http://static.techguy.org/smilies/tongue.gif to try it for a month, I figured why not take advantage of whats already in the house?

Workarounds or tips?

Thanks,

Shaun M

I am trying to run a third party dialing software through my database system. However, I am unable to connect through Phone Dialer, and my database will only use this as the default.

Is there any way to change the default phone dialing system that windows uses to connect a phone call.

I need it to use Phone Tools rather than Phone Dialer.

If anyone could suggest how I can fix phone dialer so that I can control the volume contols, as at the moment it appears to only be detecting the modem and not its audio application, then this owuld be an alternative.

I am using a US Robotics 56k Internal Win Modem, and Windows NT.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

I use the phone dialer built into windows to dial phone numbers stored in my palm pilot desktop software.
There was a change from 98 to XP in how phone dialer uses area codes and expects the format.

In windows 98 any 10 digit phone format worked OK and followed the area code and prefix rules set up under phone options.
For example, the phone format xxx-xxx-xxxx worked fine wether you had dashes, spaces or slashes in between the numbers.
The windows phone dialer, dialer.exe, would automatically use the area code and prefix rules to add a 1 before the
area code or stip off the area code as needed.

Now in XP you must enter the phone number in Phone Dialer in the international dialing format beginning with a
plus character as part of the country code and having the local area code in parentheses () in order to get the
area code rules I have set up to work. In other words, every phone number must have a +1 in front of it and the
area code must be surrounded by parentheses.

This is a major annoyance as this change means that I have to edit hundreds of phone numbers in my existing database!
Plus when you copy and paste someone's phone number from the Internet you rarely see it in the format +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx.
Most people in the U.S. use xxx/xxx-xxxx. This means everytime I add a new number I'll be editing it first.
There has got to be a better way!!!

A big hello to all who still remember me from way back when. Unfortunately it's a perplexing problem that brings me back but it feels great to be back just the same. Maybe this will start a new period of involvement for me at TSG.

Anyway, I may as well get straight to business. One of my customers has a program that with features that involve dialing the telephone. After I configured the program, it refused to dial out giving an arror message that "an unknown error has occurred." I tested the modem using DUN and it worked fine indicating that the modem is working and is configured OK. However when I tried using Dialer.exe it also refused to dial and gave the same error message. (Dialer was configured to use the correct modem by default for telephone connections and all other settings seem OK.) I have examined every modem and Dialer setting that I know of and all seem to be either obviously correct or I toyed with them. However now matter what I do I still keep getting the same error.
This feature is very important for this customer and I am completely stumped. Does anyone have any ideas?

The computer is a new Dell that came with both XP and the modem preinstalled so the installed driver should be correct. I don't remember all the systems specs off hand but it is a new machine and The specs should all be more than adequate. Is there anything I'm missing here? Is there some known issue I should be aware of?

Thank a lot!

YSB

until now I never tried to use phone dialer before which comes as an add-on in windows 95/98 in accessories, communications; is this a true calling/talking utility? if it is, I don't seem to be able to make it work; I can hear the call being dialed over my speakers but after that - nothing, no ring, no voice answering, although I am able to hear that when I pick up my regular phone; my modem is a voice modem, it works because I use it with net2phone's new free call program with msn messenger 3.5; any help?

HI

I have a huge problem with my computer. When I received my phone bill, there was a large number of calls to 0844 and 0871 numbers, which are being dialed even when the computer is off. When I run a virus = spyware scan with Norton or Spybot, it doesn't pick up anything. I also took the computer to PC world for a health check and thought it had been fixed, but the calls are still continuing. Can you please help!!!

Here is my log file.

Your microphone is picking up what the speakers are playing (their voice). You have to use headphones so that their voice isn't fed back to them

I use the Windows Dialer (dialer.exe) to keep lots of phone numbers and to dial out when I want to call. There are probably fancier phone dialers available, but I find this one totally adequate for my needs.
The problem is that I cannot find where it stores the data on the contacts I have entered. I just had to reinstall windows which meant that I had to retype in all of the contact information rather than reload it
from a backup made before I formatted my disk.
This is not a major issue. I just want to see if anyone has any information about this.
Thanks,
Ken Gash

Hello,
It's been awhile since I last posted, but then, that shows how well the advice helped me to remove the problems I had on my computer, THANK YOU BLEEPING STAFF, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!
My new problem is with a friend's bothers computer. I've only been able to get general explanations of what's going on with it, not been able to look at it first hand. What I've been told, is that every time he tries to connect to the internet, it dials a 900 number. Ok, I've heard of dialers, but don't know what kinds of dialers there are. But then I was told that when he starts windows, there's a bunch of popups that are directly on his desktop that he can't close easily at all. Plus, there's a poker game that shows up too, if that helps. Which I also remember something about a casino infection that does that, but not for sure.

What I was wondering, is that since I can't get a good look at what the machine is doing, if someone could point me in the general direction of info on how to kill dialers, or what many of them are called, as I'm pretty sure the ones that make em don't just conveniently call them dialinga900number.exe
I'd be grateful for advice on what to look for, just general of course, as I'm going to send a disk with ad-aware, hijackthis, etc since he can't get online to get them himself. Then I can maybe play the middleman to see what he's got, and let him know how to get rid of it.
Thanks again for your time and efforts

A:Solved: Windows Phone Dialer Contacts Migrate

The speed dial entries are stored in the Registry at this key:

Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Dialer\Speeddial
You would have to export that key to a .reg file to back it up, then after a re-install, simply double click the file to merge it into the registry and re-enter your speed dial list.

This batch command will export that key to a file name dialer.reg into the My Documents folder of the currently signed on user. Copy the line into Notepad, then save it someplace with a .bat extension. Be sure to change the Save as Type: setting to All Files from Text Documents (*.txt)

Double click the file when ever you want to back up the data. If your backup program backs up the My Documents folder, the dialer.reg file will be in your backup ready to be used.
Code:
reg export "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Dialer\Speeddial" "%userprofile%\My Documents\dialer.reg"

HTH
