X230 44+ battery dead after firmware update

Q: X230 44+ battery dead after firmware update

My X230 with 6 cell 44+ battery was working good. Earlier this week, lenovo system update suggested a battery firmware update and I clicked and updated. After the update, the battery is completely dead. Don't understand how this can happen. Anybody has any ideas? This is the original battery and has been working good and still holds about 2 hours charges before its sudden death.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, Lenovo Community, I recently tried updating my battery's firmware. It was going smoothly for about one minute until my charger disconnected and my laptop's battery died and will not charge. My charger has a long history of automatically disconnecting (two blinking lights, one white and one orange) so I cannot power my laptop through the charger itself. I really don't want to get the port checked, so I am looking to see if there are any other ideas from the community.  Here is what's happening:-My charger disconnects everytime I try to boot now (used to disconnect before loading Windows 10)-My battery is disconnected from the system (electronically, not physically probably)-I really cannot power on the system.  Thank you, Lenovo Community! [UPDATE] I'm (99%) going to replace the DC power jack! Any ideas about how to get the battery connected again?

Hi All, I foolishly ran the Lenovo software update tool and one of the updates that installed was battery firmware v1.13. The update failed part way through and ever since my battery is having an existential crisis - I know it's plugged in and 100% charged but it reads 0% (or sometimes a red X) and the machine shuts down when AC power is removed. Being out of warranty the phone line people just keep trying to sell me a new battery and have no ideas on how to fix the existing one. I've tried the firmware update multiple times but with no joy. Also tried sourcing previous versions of the firmware which doesn't work. My battery was not one of those listed for recall. Latest and best suggestion was that it may be a motherboard issue and I could confirm by plugging in a different battery to see if it works - with absolutely no suggestion who would let me borrow their battery and plug it into my possibly killer machine. Has anyone else had a similar problem and found a fix? Is anyone based in Perth, Western Australia and want to let me experiment with their battery? {you crazy fool!} Does anyone know how to contact an actual Lenovo person rather than the useless call centre (1800 041 267 from Australia, seemingly connecting to Malaysia or Thailand judging by the accents)? Consumer law in Australia would suggest these guys owe me a new battery regardless of warranty status but I don't know how I can force the issue if I can't even speak to them???&... This happened to me today. The solution is to restart the computer and enter the BIOS.  Then use the arrow keys to move to the config tab, then down to the power option, hit enter, scroll down to the disable built-in battery, hit enter, then follow dirctions on the right.  You will unplug the power cord to shut down the computer and when you plug it back in and turn it back on the battery will be recognized.  if not , try the process again as it took me two tries.  hope this helps.

I am dual booting Windows 10 and Linux (Ubuntu 17.10). I was on Windows 10 when I was updating my battery firmware using the Lenovo Battery Firmware Update Tool. It prompted me to update my battery and I confirmed and clicked next. Immediately, my screen turned black. I waited 10 minutes and then did a force shutdown on the computer by holding the power button. Now my battery won't charge. It is an official 55+ Lenovo battery and last week Ubuntu's acpi said that the battery was at 67% capacity and could run on battery for an hour and a half at full charge. Now all of a sudden, after the failed firmware update, my battery will not charge: whether the laptop is on in Windows 10, on in Ubuntu, or while the computer is turned off and plugged. When I do connect the AC cord the battery indicator blinks with a steady green, to a stready orange, to a rapid orange, and then off within a span of ~10 seconds. I have tried deleting the battery drivers on Windows and restarting and it does not work. I have also tried to update the battery firmware again using the Lenovo Update Firmware Tool but it repeatedly gives me the same error "The tool was unable to update the battery firmware due to an internal error." I have also updated to the latest BIOS to no avail.

Hi All, I've just updated the firmware on my 2014 Envy (device code E7A75EA) to 'F.68 Rev.A' from HP Support and now it will not boot!  Instead all I get is a blank screen and the caps-lock flashing twice (which I'm told means corrupt BIOS!) I followed the instructions carefully and no error message appeared in Windows, but when the laptop restarted it failed to load Windows and just gets stuck on this blank screen.  I've tried removing power cord/battery, and then holding down the power button for 1 minute but this hasn't helped. Can I boot to USB/CD and flash back the old firmware (v43 I think)? Please help!

Good morning and Help! I hope you can help me by clarifying some important information that you might have seen posted in this forum regarding the recovery of the AIO 700-27ISH display after the failed install of the Scalar Fonts Improvement Firmware package. I attempted to send a private message to the original poster about his or her solution, but evidently he or she is no longer a forum member. In a thread about trying to recover from a Scalar Fonts Improvement Firmware install failure, the solution was stated as follows: "I plugged in an HMDI cable between the HDMI out and the HDMI in ports (press round source button next to power button) and reapplied the 27" patch repeatedly until it successfully installed." Has anyone been able to realize success with this solution? I am a neophyte and don't understand about the plugging in the HDMI cable setup. I have my spare monitor plugged into my machine's HDMI-Out port and can read the computer's display there, but don't know how to plug an HDMI cable into both of the AIO's HDMI-out and HDMI-in ports simultaneously, which is how I interpreted the posted advice. If only one port should be plugged in at a time, which port should I connect to the second monitor? Also, once I plug in the cable, should I just press the round source button until something happens, or do I need to run the firmware update (again) as an adminisrator? Any clarification as to the setup used per the above posted advice... Read more

Seems like internal battery memory was corrupted due to flashing interruption.
I assumed the root cause is internal software error.

I've tried the same on Windows 7/8/XP with all LnvBFU revisions (from v1.2 till v1.15) without any success.

But LnvBFU.exe still recognizes the battery, it still able to start flashing.
And I still have hope to install battery software correctly.

Dear Lenovo experts:
1. Please provide steps to correct this error.
2. Please advise how can I get logs of LnvBFU to figure out what's wrong.
3. Please fix this issue in the next LnvBFU revision.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have a comparable problem over here. Got a brand new Lenovo Yoga 260 three weeks ago, worked completely fine until last wednesday. Processed some lenovo updates including Lenovo Solution Centre and Power Management and now my battery is dead. Everytime i turn on my Yoga 260 i get a battery error message after a few minutes that says the battery is not charging and it should be replaced due to a bad condition. When i open up Lenovo Settings and search for energymanagement it displays the same message telling me the battery is defect due to normal wear and it should be replaced. My problem is that the battery worked completely fine until the moment i installed some Lenovo software updates. I hope lenovo support can provide steps to correct this error instead of forcing me to return it and wait 2 -3 weeks. Thanks in advance.

Get a messagebox saying "battery not detected" and it's not charging from mains. So laptop has now turned into a desktop... as needs plugging in continually... making it almost useless for purpose. This happened exactly after firmware update a few weeks ago. By coincidence the management software also kindly informed me that it could manage the battery better and stop it wearing out by only charging up to 90% - fair enough, but don't treat me like a muppet and disable it without any way to get it back. Tons of Windows 10 updates today (after not being able to use it for a few weeks) but still no battery. I tried F1 BIOS but nothing there to enable the battery (only to disable it). This is frankly a joke - timing shows it's due to the firmware update because the battery was fine and lasted a couple of hours right before. In 25 years of countless laptops, have never had this problem - batteries weaken gradually but don't suddenly lock up and require a paid replacement suddenly. How do we run down our original battery properly before polluting the planet? Phil

Hello Lenovo Community!I own an Ideappad Z400 Touch and I had issues with trying to charge it. Obviously I turned to the forums here and I found a possible solution here. When I tried to perform a battery firmware update, it went smoothly and then suddenly turned off and had a fast flashing orange light. Obviously I knew my battery and/or charger let me down in the middle of the process. I'm kind of scared because I don't know what to do nor have the money to afford a new laptop. What most likely happened to the battery is that it got "electronically disconnected" and technically only relies on the AC adapter which now I have found out is pretty screwed up and stops charging once Windows actually boots up. Is there any way to fix this? Please help! Thank you and have a wonderful evening!

Hello, I do have X230 , and recently i Have decided to buy LTE modem (WWAN) because i'm traveling a lot and need internet access. Also in Poland we have Aero2 nation wide network with very cheap data packets (1$ for 3 GB, or 5$ for 30GB for 30 days) so it is a lot of data as for "backup" connection. So i Have ordered Sierra WIreless MC7700 because that card is whitelisted in Bios and can be used on that particular machine. And..... card was not working at all, GPS not working, i Have started downloading GPS enablers and drivers for that card from lenovo but it was a time when windows 10 was "new" there were problems with drivers etc. but i have managed to get it working. everything was fine till the day that i Have ordered 16 GB of RAM and LITEON 256 GB SSD drive to make the mashine a bit more efficent. I recently purchased an x230 and everything is perfect but the battery fit.  It moves up and down slightly.  I know there are many posts in the lenovo forums for all different models that the battery fits lose in "x" model and solutions of putting paper / foam / tape to make the battery fit tighter.   What I'm wondering is if anyone has actually had the problem fixed by lenovo.  I've read a few posts where a user has had the base piece of the case replaced (where the battery fit's into) and that has solved the problem.  I'm still within my return period on my x230 and am awaiting a call back from tech support to see if there is anything they will do but I don't think I will keep it if they can't fix it.   I'm just curious has anyone actually had luck by replacing the base piece.  From what i've read a replacement battery hasn't worked for anyone.  Also, I know everyone says its by design for thermal purposes but I haven't actually seen any official confirmation of this from lenovo.   Thanks.

A:Battery Loose / Battery wiggle in x230 and LENOVO ...

As a follow up, I'm just curious if this is a widespread issue?  Anyone have loose battery in their x230 / x220?  I'm not talking about it falling out...but just a few millimeters of wiggle room.  Basically when i pick mine up or place it down, I can feel / hear the battery move.  I'm just trying to get an idea if this is a real problem or thats just how every thinkpad is.  I called support and they are sending someone to replace the base panel and we'll see if that fixes it.  I'll update this post when it get's replaced.   Edit* I also asked the lenovo support rep if they had heard of this issue and they said no, never.  I don't see how this is possible as if you do a google search for thinkpad loose battery there are many results.

Hi Mim1234,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I am sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with no power on your ThinkPad X230.

Remove the AC adapter, system battery and CMOS (coin) battery (under the palm rest) for about 30 seconds.
Reattach the CMOS battery, palm rest, AC adapter and system battery.
Power your ThinkPad system ON.
If it powers on successfully, then update the BIOS and Embedded Controller code.
If it did not power on successfully, then have the ThinkPad system board (planar) replaced.

Please let us know the findings after performing the above troubleshooting steps.

Hope to hear back soon!

Best regards
Hemanth Kumar.B

Hi I've been using my X220i for the last 3 years or so and decided to upgrade to an i7 X230 a few days ago. After a few days of no problems, using the same charger I've been using on my X220 (the 90w slim travel charger) I plugged it in to charge while the laptop was powered on. The laptop powered off instantly and now it will not power on again. There are no status lights visible and nothing happens when I plug it in. I have done all the steps of removing the battery and pressing the power button etc and on putting the battery back in the fingerprint sensor light was flickering orange - it is now back to no signs of life at all again other than the left side of the palmrest gets hot when I insert the battery. I am strongly suspecting a fault with the charger fried the motherboard when I plugged it in but am wondering if anyone else has any suggestions before i try to make a claim within my remaining 1 week of warranty. Thnaks

My X230 powers down when I try to operate it with a battery connected.  I've tried replacing the battery, but it continues to power down even with the replacement.  I tried changing the power management settings to not shut down while plugged in if the battery gets critically low, but that didn't fix the problem either.  It doesn't shut down when I run it on just AC power without a battery plugged in.  This would be fine, but I need to run a BIOS update to fix a different issue I'm having, and I can't do that until I have a full battery connected that isn't going to cause it to shut down during the update.

Hallo, I have a problem with my 3 yo X230 where the battery is fast empty, only 20 minutes from full charging although I only open 1 program (Excel/word/etc.). Should I change the battery ? In lenovoquickpick.com, the battery seems for type X230T (Part number: 0A36317). Can it be used for X230 ? From the picture shown in web, it is different from the battery installed in my laptop (4 cells). Now I am in Germany and quit difficult to find Lenovo people who can speak English well. Thank you

Dear, I found some strange issue with my Lenovo ThinkPad X230 on Windows 10. When i've attached the battery, I try to shutdown, hibernate and sleep the labtop but the laptop didnt shutdown or hibernate properly. The screen is turn off, the WIFI symbol still bright, the power button light still blink and the fan still spining. i need to force shutdown by pressing the power button for 10 sec to turn everything off. On the other hand, if i take the battery off, pluged the power cord, everything will work fine. I can shutdown, hibernate and sleep. I used Lenovo Service Bridge to scan and install the lastest version of every driver. I also flashed the BIOS to lastest version. Unfotunately, the problem still persists.

Hi, I'm new to the forums, and I tried searching my problem but I couldn't find anything so I decided to post to get some quick help. I had my x230 and never had problem with this for a long time.  Recently I decided to purchase a 9cell battery 44++.  Given the oppurtunity of being in singapore I went around to find a geniune lenovo 44++ battery for my x230. So I got this 44++ with fru 45n1029 put it on my laptop put the ac and boot the machine.  Then I went to the power manager and notice that it still says 45n1023  tried to reinstall my power manager but still says the same 45n1023. I wanted to know if there something wrong or how to I make power manager recognize my new battery? Is my battery geniune?  I'm attaching an image below of the new battery I hope someone can shed some light about my concern.  http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc158/sceptile_ray/Computer%20parts/20140623_203911.jpg and here is the information about the battery that power management shows:

Hi,The Power Manager settings as well as the battery parameters are stored in the registry. So if PM could be removed at all (!) those parameters should be reset. But I hope it's not a single solution.I'm not sure will it help or no, but you might perform the following steps:- PM menu (mouse right click on the battery icon), "Remove and Replace Battery" item,- battery reset. Also let me give you another advice: change the battery charge thresholds for its healthy and lifespan, do not charge it fully.

Hi, my x230 shuts down instantly when the battery is at 25-30% (around 10Wh).I tried performing battery gauge reset with no improvements, but I have the suspect that it doesn't run the full charge-discharge-charge cycle since it shuts down (I didn't attend the full cycle so I'm not sure).I had a wrong "full charge capacity" reading in power manager which I solved switching charge mode in Battery Maintenance from "always full charge" to "optimize for battery health".The battery firmware update tool is not suggesting an update, so I'm apparently out of options.  Thanks in advance for any help

I had updated the Windows 10 April Update on my Thinkpad X230. I use Bitlocker to encrypt C, D disks. Before update Windows, I suspended Bitlocker function on C, update all newest drivers downloaded from Lenovo for Thinkpad X230 (BIOS, Firmware, ...). After update Windows 10, I can use my laptop in some hours, then I shutdown it. However, from this time, I cannot boot Windows, it only boot on some seconds and automatically turn off. I use USB Windows to go to boot my laptop, then turn off Bitlocker in C drive, and I can boot and use my Thinkpad. Unfortunately, when I turn on Bitlocker again, my Thinkpad X230 cannot boot again. Any idea for me? Please don't tell me turn off Bitlocker.
