Preferred Solution: Virtual Machine??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

The issue could be incorrect configuration of XP mode.

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...
The host machine can still access the network but it does so through the virtual switch. Ipconfig /all on the host reveals the following...

What should I do for getting all shared folders of virtual machine in other computer in same network.

Can someone explain the difference between these 3 programs?

A:Remote desktop, Virtual Machine and Virtual Box

Hi Jason6161 Two of these words are closely related, while the other one isn't.Remote Desktop is often a reference to the "RDP" acronym, which means "Remote Desktop Protocol", a protocol used by Microsoft Windows systems to remotely connect to another Windows system (or even other OS now). There's a nice little article on Microsoft website about, I suggest you to give it a read. If there's something you don't understand in it, let me know and I'll explain it to you.Connect to another computer using Remote Desktop ConnectionA Virtual Machine is like the state name, a machine that doesn't exist physically, it only exists virtually inside a system. It's the emulation of a system inside another system. So you could for example have Windows 8.1 installed on your computer, but using a program, create a virtual machine running Windows XP in it. To put it simply, it's running an independant system (guest) inside a system (host). For more information, you can consult the Wikipedia article below.Virtual machineVirtualBox is a program developped and maintenant by Oracle that allows you to create virtual machines. It's what we call an "hypervisor". A program that allows you to create and manage virtual machines. For more information, you can consult their website and their Wikipedia article.VirtualBoxVirtualBox WikiSo to sum it up, you can use VirtualBox to create a virtual machine (or multiple VMs), and you use the "Remote Desktop" to connect remotely to another computer and access it. ... In Virtualbox's main screen, select your XP machine (do not start it). Click settings. On the left side, click System. On the Motherboard tab, set Base Memory to 1024. On the Acceleration tab, be sure that both boxes are checked. You may need to enter your computer's BIOS and enable its virtualization features. On the left side, click Display. On the Video tab, be sure that Enable 3D acceleration and Enable 2d video acceleration are checked. Click OK to save the changes.Start the XP virtual machine and let it finish booting. Above XP you'll see a menu bar. Click Devices > Install Guest Additions and follow the prompts. You will not be able to install your ATI drivers. Virtualbox is emulating its own set of hardware for Windows XP to use. My instructions will tell Virtualbox to give XP enough resources to run your game.As for the game itself, if it is on a CD, click Devices > CD/DVD Devices and make sure that your CD drive is selected.

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone may be able to help me with the following. I tried to use VMware's free "converter" software to convert my physical HP machine to a virtual machine. However, when trying to run the virtual machine, it says that the virtual machine has two processors & that it is limited to only using one processor, & therefore, will not start. The physical machine is a dual core processor, but I see no way to configure the virtual machine so that it only has one processor.

It seems to me the software should just configure itself to at least run, and from there a person can try to tweak the settings and be advised if there are limitations at that point, but that would make to much sense. Alternatively, they could provide an easy way to change the settings so you can at least get the thing to run, but again, that would make to much sense.

Anyway, if anyone can help me get the virtual machine clone running, please let me know.

Thanks
John

I have decided that I want to test out Linux and Windows XP (later is for nostalgia), and so I decided to download a VM called VirtualBox. The installation went fine, but it's this nex part that bothers me. I am afraid that I'll mess up and turn my Windows 10 to one of the above.
So what I need is to avoid this, but I don't understand youtube guides on how they do this. I'm afraid that downloading an ISO file might accidentally boot it on my harddrive, and not the virtual.
First things first, do anyone know where I can get a Windows XP (or maybe Windows 7 or 8 instead to use internet), and any Linux (don't know much about the various OS) ISOs?
Then, how do I proceed with installing them in my VirtualBox? I have already set up one for XP, but ofc it has nothing to boot up.

A:Virtual Machine Help

The question you must first answer is whether you want to be able to use both OS's at the same time - - for that you'd need to use a Virtual Machine.
If you want to run them separately, then you could install them as dual-boot.

As far as Virtual Machines Hosts go, you'd probably be better with Oracle VirtualBox than Microsoft VPC2007 - (VPC isn't fully supported in Vista Home Premium). Other options include VMWare (which is arguably better than either).

Dual Booting Windows and Linux is not really a job for beginners - although there are many sites that will get you started - and I would suggest playing in a VM first even if you eventually elect a dual-boot.

Just be sure that you don't accept any "updates" from sites that tell you that unless you are very sure that it is a trusted site. Some people will continue to get such notices even after installing the latest version. There is no later version than this.

Okay so I was wondering earlier. Is it possible, and if so is it easy enough, to use a Virtual Machine to test files for malware. For example, if you used VM Ware and install Windows or Linux and some security tools on it and tested files on there before using it on your actual PC. So you could determine whether or not a file was clean, and if it was then fair enough you can use it on your actual PC. So, is there any chance that if a file was infected, it could break out of the Virtual Machine and infect your actual PC, rather than just infecting the Virtual PC and you just wiping that and reverting back.

If this can be done, then is there a good free alternative to VM Ware for using Virtual Machines, because as far as I know, VM Ware isn't free and unfortunately I can't purchase it right now. Also, does anybody know of a tutorial or can write one themselves on using a Virtual Machine like VM Ware, for checking files for malware and infections using Virtual Machines. Preferably using Linux as I don't have a spare copy of Windows to use right now, however either will do.

Thanks for reading.

Hi all
One should not DEFRAG SSD's.

However if one uses Virtual Machines quite a lot with data updates / changes then a Virtual Hard drive usually needs to be de-fragmented due to the way the Virtual I/O is mapped to the "Real File system" on the host machine.

Since defragmenting SSD's is NOT at all recommended does this imply that one should NOT use SSD's for Virtual Machines or Virtual Hard disks.

I've googled around but can't seem to find any refrences on this particular topic.

Using an SSD for a HOST OS is fine since the OS itself doesn't change much but a Virtual Machine is a different matter.

Cheers
jimbo

A:SSD use for Virtual Machine(s)

Actually you can defrag a SSD, and it does indeed help improve performance, because of compressing free space.

However:
It should not or does not need to be done often.
Also, defragmenters like the built in Win7 one can cause more harm than good.

Defragmenters like PerfectDisc, with the Consolodate option is perfectly safe for a SSD.
Although it states its defragmenting, all it is actually doing is compressing free space, which is fine.

Theres also DiskKeeper, but it requires an additional add-on called Hyperfast.
(I know little about this other than it supposedly works very well for SSDs and in much the same manner)

Obviously you wouldn't want to run it daily, but on occasion does help, and is fine.

Im only aware of these 2 that are safe to use w/SSDs. More so with PD11.

Sadly, I am not all that familiar with VMs.
But, would it possibly help to consolodate the system files, then set up your VM?

Sorry not much help.

I have Win 10 installed in VMs on several machines. Works great. Don't know where you read that it shouldn't be done as it's a great way to test out new OSes. You can use free software like VMWare Player, VirtualBox or even Virtual PC on Win 7 or Win 8. If you have 64-bit Win 8 you can setup a VM using the included Hyper-V.

I've used Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and now I'm demoing VMWare for a trial period. I must say on so far only running Virtuals of Vista, XP, and Server 2003 Vista is hard to emulate for a virtual PC. The funny thing is that VMWare does a better job than Virtual PC which is funny considering MS makes Vista and you would think they could emulate it better but no.

So that kind of gets to my next question? Anyone know any more virtual machines out there they themselves have tried and where please with. I'm thinking of forcing some of my users in my domain to go virtual and creating an image of their Harddisks on site. It's Sooooo much easier restoring a virtual system versus the real thing in every sense of the word. So far I like VMware more the way it handles and the options it gives but MS Virtual PC 07' you can't beat at it's price, free.

You'd need to get yourself some virtualization software.
I use VirtualBox, but there are others available if you prefer.

You also need the installation disks for an Operating System, and a license to install them as though on a regular machine.

If the Operating System you install is 32 bit it will be able to run 16 bit software.
If the Operating System you install is 64 bit it won't be able to, just as your physical host OS cannot run such software.
If you install another family of OS onto the VM, such as Linux, you'll be able to run Linux software from within the Virtual machine but not Windows software.

Any more questions feel free to ask.
And Merry Christmas to you too.

Both of which I have to spare from my laptop. The virtual machine keeps crashing when I launch it. I have read and apparently a few people using the Think Pad have had this issue. I have followed the steps that were suggested to them. These include: Re installing Virtual Box,Disabling Hyper-V windows feature (Through GUI and Command Prompt) Uninstalling and reinstalling did nothing. I do not have an option to disable or enable Hyper-V and the command failed. I need to be able to run a virtual box for one of my classes at university. Are you getting viruses, spyware or other problems? Could it not be that this is happening because you are visiting dodgy websites, opening files from unknown sources, downloading "freeware" of questionable origin and suchlike? If the answer is yes, then there's no need to stop, just start being a bit more careful, that's all!

Visiting dodgy sites, downloading "freeware", or anything like that? If so, you might want to consider doing these riskfull things inside a sandbox, such as a VMware virtual machine.

You can download VMware server for free at

http://www.vmware.com/download/server/

Surf for your pr0n inside a virtual machine instead, and then your main installation - which you trust for things such as online banking and so forth - never visits a dodgy internet site.

Install an XP virtual machine, patch it up by visiting windows update, and then start doing all that naughty stuff inside a VM instead!

http://www.vmware.com/download/server/

If that XP installation gets infected, just delete it and start again! Or restore from a back easily, just by copying some files.

A:Use a virtual machine -- it's free!

lol, my system is suited and booted for just about anything, no virtual machines for me, but thx for the links

Hi,

I have an HP laptop with Windows 7 (64 bits) installed. And I learned that Cisco VPN client is not supported for this operating system. So, I set up a virtual machine using VMPlayer (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/) and installed Windows XP Professional (32 bits). I installed Cisco VPN Client, Release 5.0.06.0110 with success.

When I tried to login into a network I got an error "Reason 442: failed to enable virtual adapter". I searched about it and found this on Cisco site (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/secu...html#wp1584552) but I'm using Windows XP Professional and could not find the way to apply the solution provided (the solution is for Windows Vista).

I understand the problem is related to IP adresses but not getting a clue how to resolve it.

Please help me out over this.

Thanks.

A:Unknowingly using a virtual machine?

Earlier versions of avast installed a VM as part of their NG module. I'm not sure if it is used in later versions.

I would uninstall avast and install the latest version or use something else.

hey
where can i get java virtual machine, IE6 keeps pestering me to download it but when i click download nothing happens
thanks,
michael

A:java virtual machine

You can't get M$ java VM any more the court order stopped it

http://www.microsoft.com/java/

IE doesn't know anbout the court order and wants a java vm to display java web content. The MS download page has been removed

alternative is

Sun JAva from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html

If you really want the M$ version with all it's security holes then a list of download sites v=can be found here
http://java-virtual-machine.net/download.html

I've just installed VMware Player to run XP and Ubuntu.

Do I need to install anti-virus, firewall and other security software or is this taken care of by the host (Windows 7 Pro)?

Prospero, You should treat any Virtual Drive Operating System as a new computer and they are vulnerable to you picking up a virus. Data comes in thru it's own Ethernet connection and does not get tested by your main OS's av.

I recommend installing an AV on each.

Unless your running DOS 6.2 on a Virtual Machine

I've visited some sites recently that require "java virtual machine." I don't have it and can't get it....or can I?

A:Java Virtual Machine?

The latest version is available on the Microsoft Updates site as a critical update. Or you can get the older, vulnerable version here:

http://www.krm.com/techsupport/tech-downloads_mvm.html

You may also install Sun's Java Plugin which generally works just as well.

Hi

Iam using Windows Virtual PC which was a 64-Bit version I installed, I got XP Home 32-Bit installed via it perfectly and tried to install Windows 8 x64 AND THEN Windows 8.1 x64 but on both I got the BSOD (in the Virtual Machine) almost straight away saying 64-bit CPU is not supported?

ive read this may be due to not having VTx but I do as my CPU is a 3470 (Ivy Bridge) and SIW says its enabled as does BIOS

Iam testing some Windows ISO's to check to make sure they are OEM and ask for product key during install but also to diagnose a WSUS Offline issue in windows 8 that reverses all updates right at the end saying there was a problem, the software creator needs a log and I aint got time at work.

can anyone help with this or advise of better virtual machine software (noob)

thanks

A:Using Win 8 on Virtual Machine and says no 64-Bit support

What is your host operating system? Your specs say Windows 8 - is that true? Are you really running Virtual PC on Windows 8? Is it 8 or 8 pro - 32 or 64 bit?

Assuming you are running windows 8 you can only run one type of virtualisation software at the same time.

Generally VMWare Player is the easiest (I think) and it is free from here https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/fre...are_player/6_0

Disable Hyper-V first if you have it enabled or it will not work.
