Lenovo G470 atikmpag.sys problem

Q: Lenovo G470 atikmpag.sys problem

I encountered the BSOD with the problem about atikmpag.sys It seems like I made a wrong choice about deleting it, (solution from internet searching) and now the Display Adapters doesn't work anymore as you can see in the pictures after deleting the atikmpag.sys during safe mode, It somehow resolved the problem about the BSOD and my laptop are finally starting properly now the problem is about the resolution, it's not the same anymore, it's too low and somehow the screen is blurry, as you can see at the Graphics section, the maximum resolution I can only choose is 1024 x 768, which is supposed to be 1366 x 768 (HD) if i'm not mistaken, I need your help on how to fix this I hope i can turn it back to normal., I don't have a CD installer (if it is supposed to have one) to re-install it, and about downloading from other sites I'm a little bit concerned about that so I haven't tried it yet.. and it seems like Lenovo has its own installer... Pls help ASAP

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Lenovo G470 atikmpag.sys problem

hi jm9327,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

The G470 with a dual GPU (Intel+AMD), uses a muxless driver (this is a custom driver that switches the discrete AMD Graphics to the Intel Graphics to save power). If you have installed a different driver, this may cause system instability (including BSOD).

If you're running on Windows 7, try the following::

1. Follow this guide on how to disable automatic driver installation.
2. Install these drivers in order (reboot if necessary)
(1st) - Intel Onboard Graphics Driver for Windows 7 (64-bit)
(2nd) - AMD Video Driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit)

When finished, check if the yellow exclamation marks are gone under Device Manager > Display Adapters and observe the screen resolution adjustment and BSOD occurrence.

Let me know how it goes.

Which version of Windows you have shouldn't affect how your battery is charged up so it's probably just coincidence.

You may be needing a new battery. Do you have anyone nearby who can check the battery for you?

After spending an inordinate amount of time searching the internet about my problem, and then contacting Lenovo (who told me it was hardware and I needed to return all of the laptops I bought), I managed to magically find the solution to my problem.  Since it wasn't documented elsewhere on the internet, I thought I'd create a post for it here. The problem I was having was that my Lenovo G470 laptop did not display Press F2 to Enter Setup during the boot process, and because of this, no amount of hammering the F2 button would allow access to the BIOS.  I attempted all of the standard fixes, pulled the battery, held power down for 30 seconds, removed the HDD -- nothing would cause this to appear.  Since it was happening on all 3 of the G470s we just purchased, I didn't believe it was hardware.  I reached out to Lenovo Premium Support, and after about 3 minutes of discussion, "Paul" informed me that all three machines were defective and would have to be sent back in for repair, and it would take 4-6 weeks for repair and diagnosis.   As I had been noodling around with the machines for a few days, ONE of the three ended up showing the bios options during the boot process.  At that point, I had been hitting just about every single key on the keyboard during the boot process, so I couldn't identify what it was that I did that caused the options to appear.  A little more troubleshooting and I figured it out: Lenovo G470 machines equip... Hello everybody.

I have had these BSOD almost since I installed Seven.
I used WINDBG myself to interprete those minidumps, and that helped me to search on the web.

While searching on the web, I saw lots of people complaining about similar issues with similar dlls involved, but I didn't found how to solve this.

I completely uninstalled ATI software, and reinstalled the standalone display driver, but the problem is still here.

All my drivers are up to date, including those of the graphic card.

I enabled memory remap yesterday, but it didn't change anything (I suspect a RAM-related issue, but I'm not sure).

I attached the files you asked for. The perfmon report is in French, so feel free to let me know if you need a translation of some part or another detail.

Thanks by advance for your response.

Hello, I'm currently using a Sony Viao Laptop, Model # SVE17137CXB and I'm currently having a constant problem with BSOD message, otherwise known as "Video_TDR_Failure (atikmpag.sys)".... Now this problem has been occurring for about 1 week now and the problem hasn't received a permanent fix yet....
So far I tried doing the following methods:
1. Factory Reset using the media disk made with the Sony Viao program...
Result: By doing so, I couldn't even get pass the installation screen anymore.. However when I used a new Window Installation via USB. I manage to get pass the installation process and get the occasional BSOD in approximately 5-15 minutes of using the computer.
2. Did a complete Hard Drive Wipe(Method: Setting all values to 0, which was a recommended setting) and then reinstall everything from the Sony Viao media disk.
Result: As result as option one, and still resort to using a Window Installation via USB.
3. Installing New and/or Old AMD drivers
Result: Temporary Fix... but not really...
I installed the following drivers to my computer:

A:Video_TDR_Failure (atikmpag.sys) problem

Hi. . .
Video TDR timeouts have 2 different bugchecks and I believe you experienced both.
0x116 - BSOD
0x117 - "Live Kernel Event"
Both are "Video TDR Timeouts" - the video driver is unable to reset in the allot time - 30000ms or 30 seconds
0x117 - the video driver ultimately does recover
0x116 - video driver is unable to recover; BSOD occurs
Your system - http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=SVE17137CXB&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab
This is the latest ATI video driver listed on the Sony site - http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/swu-download.pl?mdl=SVE17137CXB&upd_id=9226&os_group_id=24
If you are unable to install that driver after a full reinstall of Windows, you may have a problem with your video card.
Is it a laptop or Desktop?
Unfortunately, ATI video drivers are plagued with problems compared to NVIDIA.  I see 1 NVIDIA BSOD for every 1,000 ATI BSODs
I'll ask someone who I know is an expert with ATI video to drop in on this thread and take a look.  He usually logs on around 5-6 am EDT (GMT-5). It is ~12:35 am here now.
In anticipation of John taking a look, please run the BSOD Posting Instructions and attach the files as instructed so that he has material to work with.

LONG VERSION: My wife recently wanted a PC built so I bought the parts for a computer. I placed my old PSU into it (a Corsair 600W) and my old Western Digital into it. Both are about a year old. The rest were new parts. About a day into installation she was complaining of artifacts on screen and BSODs. The error messages were atikmpag.sys and sometimes atikmdag.sys. Graphical glitches would come whether on video games or browser or even on idle. I automatically assumed it was the GPU (An ASUS R9 290) and, after changing drivers around without success, I RMA'ed it and got another of the same make and model. I replaced it, but after another day the BSODs began again. This time I did what I have found on multiple forums: I've changed driver versions through 13, 14, and beta drivers. I expanded manually both atikmdag.sys and atikmpag.sys using the "Expand.exe" method. I changed the Windows 7 Aero scheme to Classic. I updated the motherboard drivers (AsRock Z97 Extreme4). Nothing was working.

I should stop here and remind that both my HD and my PSU were in a build of the exact same a week ago (only the mobo was different). I have my doubts that one of these is bad, as the PSU was operating fine when I pulled it out ... Read more

Hello and welcome to SevenForums.

The problem is caused by your graphics driver. Run Display Driver Uninstaller(DDU)
Make sure you tick the Uninstall C:/AMD and C:/NIVIDA folders while you are in DDU when you are done running DDU install your graphics driver again and you should be good to go! This is the guide for DDU: Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling

You are saying that the issue is with atikmpag.sys. That is the display driver, and the display hardware is AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series.

DXDiag does not find that device. Neither the installed driver.

Based on the above, it is safe to say that the display device is failing, but I will still suggest you to check the situation with another driver version, a good stable one.

Uninstall the installed display driver using Display Driver Uninstaller. Then install the CCC 14.4 WHQL only.

Let us know the result.

If the issue equally persists, you have to change the graphics card.

Hi guys, I really hope you can help me with this issue. I have been having multiple BSOD lately and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight for me. These problems happen randomly, not when I'm playing games (I almost never use my computer for that anyway), just at any random times. I know next to nothing about the technical aspects of computers, so bare with me. I'm pretty sure it has to do with my display adapter. Almost every time before the BSOD hits my screen flashes, goes black then comes back all glitched out, then a bubble on the lower right hand corner pops up saying the display driver has stopped responding, something AMD, and then anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes later I get the BSOD. When the screen flashes, I know it's all over.

I did try to install an update, but when I did so it installed and totally changed the format of my screen, and I couldn't get it to go back to "normal" no matter what I did. I do not have the option for screen resolution will not display 1920x1080 at all, so my screen just isn't right for what it normally is. I did a system restore and it brought me back to where I am now.

It also states atikmpag.sys on the BSOD. I have a shot of the screen if it helps at all as well. Here is a direct link to that...

I have also followed the directions and went ahead and ran the utility, and attached the results to my post. Many thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer to me. I'm go... Read more

A few days ago I was just randomly on the computer, and my computer started acting funny. I started getting fuzzy lines, the screen would go blank and different colored pixels and lines would be on the screen. Random things like this would go on, and eventually whenever I would boot up my computer I would get a BSOD message and not be able to access the desktop. I disabled the video card, and that made things go back to normal, though I had low resolution. I just came back from work and now I not only have low resolution but everything is in pastel colors and it is worse and grainy, and it's harder to navigate things than when it was simply just a lower resolution. I've tried updating and rolling back my video card driver, but it didn't change anything. If I did the dump or zip wrong I'm sorry, I'm not used to my computer being this non-navigational...

From what I understand  your notebook works fine when using English keyboard layout, but does not work as expected if you change to Spanish keyboard layout.
Check your BIOS for a language or region setting and adjust as needed.  Also - look in control panel for keyboard settings and install additional keboard layout for Spanish.
Good luck.

That BSOD stop code usually points to a problem with the Hard Drvie (HD) that is preventing it from booting.   If you have another computer running Windows 7, 8.1 or 10, you could Create a System Repair Disk that you can use to boot your laptop, and from the tools on the CD, run a chkdsk of the hard drive.   You can also use another computer to create download the Windows 10 install media directly from Microsoft, and use it to boot your system and attempt a repair, but if your HD is actually going bad, attempting any sort of repair may just make the chance of recovering your important data less likely. If you have data on the existing HD that you simply cannot bear losing, I would leave it off, and take the system to a good local computer shop and have them try to recover your data off the HD before attempting any sort of repair.    A good PC repair shop will be able remove the HD from your laptop, attach it to another computer, and attempt backing up your data off the old drive for you.    How to create a Windows System Repair DiscInsert a blank writable CD or DVD into your CD/DVD driveSelect  Start >> Run and type:  recdisc  and press enter.Select "Create Disk"Good Luck,

Since you have to hunt around different Lenovo sites (and other sites) to find out about these softwares, I decided to make a post to get feedback from actual Yoga owners on how these programs interact, what they do, which ones are prerequisite, and which ones are unnecessary. Please don't take this as a blanket answer. This is just what I have found. It might be right - it might be wrong. I'm looking for others to post their experiences as well. Lenovo System Interface Foundation Driver - Necessary prerequisite (missing driver in device manager without it). It allows the Lenovo Utility and Lenovo Companion to work. Lenovo Yoga Mode Control - Necessary if you want to use your yoga to seemlessly change between all the different modes (laptop, tablet, tent, stand). This software is responsible for autorotating and putting Windows into tablet mode. Lenovo Utility - Recommended(?) This one I'm not too sure on. I remember that I was missing some function that I wanted but I can't remember what it was now. Maybe battery cycle count and health? Lenovo Companion - I don't have this one installed and don't think it's necessary but would like someone else to shed some light here.

Hello and Merry Christmas (almost!),

I've been getting some BSODs lately with atikmpag.sys mostly being involved. I also remember a file watchdog.sys (what the..?). I reinstalled windows this morning, see what that would do, but again another BSOD with atikmpag.sys involved. I'm running Catalyst 11.12, also tried 11.11, 11.10 (I think) and 11.9

I already ran memtest from cold boot, for 5 ours or so with no errors being reported. Furmark just ran stable for 75 minutes with 88 degrees Celcius maximum, showing a nice flat line for the temperature. Also I must note that I can game on this system for hours at once, without problems.

Sometimes it just BSOD during a game, sometimes (like today) while in windows. I think I wanted to maximize the Steam window, then it bugged out.

Since my system is overclocked, I also reverted the bios to default but it still gave a BSOD at some point (before I reinstalled windows this morning).

Not sure at all what causes this, maybe the videocard is trying to tell me it wants to retire to FPS heaven.

A:atikmpag.sys, mostly

Of course stop any overclocking first

For testing purposes, remove ESET NOD32 Antivirus from your system.
Download, install and use Microsoft Security Essentials with windows firewall enable.

Update the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver.

Boot into safe mode with networking and update it using Intel? Driver Update Utility.

Download and install the new version of Driver Sweeper.
Download the most recent software\driver for your ati AMD Graphics Drivers & Software.

Uninstall ati software\driver,restart in safe mode, run driver sweeper, choose only AMD-Display and clean, restart in normal mode.
Install the new ati software\driver,restart.

Update DirectX .
Read carefully the instructions and run NVIDIA/AMD Video Card - Test with OCCT post here the results.

Then run Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95
Have always in mind the temperatures.
Finish and post back.

You're right, the BSODs did start the day you installed Windows 7. SP1 has not changed the type of BSODs you are getting.

Every dump is the same: a 0x116 bugcheck. See here: STOP 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR troubleshooting - Windows 7 Forums

Do you have a different graphics card you can try out? If not, see if you can borrow one from a friend or purchase one from a store that will allow you to return it.

It may be worth it to update your graphics drivers to the very latest version: AMD Graphics Drivers & Software

I see the crashes persisted through the October and November versions, but it can't hurt to try.

Hello forum!

I'm having a critical fault in my system, but I can't pinpoint >what< causes it exactly.

When stressing the graphics card it tends to crash out and attempts to reset the display driver (fails to BSOD). My first idea of course was overheating, but the temps seems to be in order, not just with the video card but with everything else (no idea about psu though). The pc is clean, dust-free, new thermal paste has been applied this month.

The bsods seems to be getting more frequent (for example I can play for 30 min, then it bsods, I attempt to play again boom another bsod in 5 minutes or less).

Naturally I've tried to reinstall drivers, old drivers, newest drivers, with and without catalyst, memtest, fresh windows, updated bios, older bios. I'm frequently using ccleaner, have active virus protection and not overclocking anything. I've also tried eliminating daemon tools, but it didn't help.

Here are my specs atm:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit SP1
Proc: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
Mem: 2.0 Gb RAM
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
HDD: Maxtor 6B200P0 ATA Device
PSU was a Codegen 400W "HardwareMurderer" before, lately replaced by a 350W spare noname PSU (I can't afford anything better right now :( )

...and here are the pics and the technicals:

Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.

Long story short, I've been having driver crashes quite often lately, where my screen will freeze, then go black, and then come back to normal. Whole process takes like 10-20 seconds.
On top of that I'm getting a BSOD atleast once a day, very very annoying. I think windows live messenger triggers it, but I can't get it fixed.

I've tried downloading the latest drivers for my videocard, but that didn't work. I'm currently running this driver:

Here's the rest of the information you guys need, I hope to hear from you soon.
? OS - Vista/ Windows 7 ? Windows 7
? x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? 64 bit
? What was original installed OS on system? None, self-built
? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? Pirated OEM with a legit serial from my personal MSDN account.
? Age of system (hardware) year and a half, ram is 3-4 months old
? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? I'd say a month, maybe 2 max since I re-installed Windows

? CPU intel core i5-750
? Video Card (XFX) ATI HD 4850
? MotherBoard ASRock P55DE3
? Power Supply - brand & wattage OCZ500SXS (500W)

? System Manufacturer Me, myself and I
? Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) :)

A:atikmpag.sys BSOD

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

Now my problem is that when I boot up the computer and log into windows, there seems to be a random chance that my displays will just start flicking and then after 30 seconds I get a BSOD with the error of atikmpag.sys . If the computer doesn't blue screen everything works 100% fine, I can play Battlefield 3 on high graphics like all day and not a single problem will occur.
