Left ctrl key stopped working

Q: Left ctrl key stopped working

I rebooted my laptop after windows defender found malware, and after that, the left ctrl key stopped working, but the right one is still operational. I can ctrl+c and all that stuff with the right ctrl key, but there's no function whatsoever on the other one. The malware I'm talking about is called BrowserModifier:Win32/Prifou, just in case.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yoga 2-11 Yesterday the CTRL-C, CTRL-X, and ALT-CTRL-DEL functions stopped working; strangely CTRL-V works fine. It's very difficult to get the @  and ? symbols to appear, but capital letters using the same Shift key are fine. Also, when I would type, several of the same letter would appear, and when pressing the space bar several spaces would appear. I fixed this issue by adjusting my keyboard settings by setting the repeat rating to the slowest setting. I've used device manager to uninstall the keyboard, also updated drivers, etc, but nothing seems to fix things. Using Windows Key R and OSK to display the onscreen keyboard, and using my physical keyboard for input confirms that the Shift and CTRL keys work. One thing that I noticed: when I touch the CTRL key a round onscreen circle appears and gets smaller and disappears; this is also true for CTRL-X and CTRL-C, but when using CTRL-V the circle does not appear.

Win XP OS, AMD Athlon...computer started running slow...slow loading, very laggy in games at around the same time that my left Ctrl Alt Del stopped opening Task Manager. Opening it in Run, Taskbar and right Ctrl Alt Del still works. Ctrl Alt works in other programs...ie games, so it's not my keyboard. I'd appreciate a look-over of this log. Thanks so much.

P.S. Avast found nothing. Spybot found 5 tracking cookies, Ad-aware found 10 tracking cookies. I'm going to start Housecall next. Computer rebooted while I ran it 2 nights ago while I slept and I didn't try it again yet...was running other things. I'm also hearing a slight clicking sound when I reboot that started along with this problem. Also I have had episodes of IE windows flashing on the screen and also add/remove programs when I first opened them. I finally got them all clicked shut or closed in Task Manager.

Anyone think of why Ctrl + Alt + Del would stop working please? I can still get to XP Pro Task Manager by using Start > Help and Support > Task Manager, but obviously that's a poor second best.

Presumably it will return after a reboot, but as that's a 5-10 minute task (for everything to settle down) I'd like to try any other fixes that anyone can suggest please.

but as that's a 5-10 minute task (for everything to settle down) Hi - Do you think there may be an infection causing this problem -Are there other problems like bad slowing and any redirecting , or is things just a bit slow -You can try to run disk check and see if there are any basic problems -Copy and paste this code into Run Box - Close all open programs including the internet - The scan should take about 30 to 45 mins and check/repair any faults it finds -CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /R | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30 Click OK when you are ready and the item will reboot your computer after 30 seconds, and run a full 5 stage check -Thank you -

Okay guys, so i installed Classic Shell on my Windows 8.1 laptop and i kinda didn't like it too much so i uninstalled it. But it has'nt uninstalled completely, when i try running setup again, and choosing the 'remove' option it doesn't uninstall! Anyways, that isn't really the problem, the thing is, when i press 'ctrl alt del', it doesn't go to task manager, i tried right clicking on the start icon and clicking on task manager but that didn't work either, so i had to go to start menu and search for task manager and then finally it came up.

I'm wondering if there is any correlation between classic shell and 'ctrl al del' not working, if anybody knows any way of getting it to work again, it would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks!

Hi,
I have just switched my home computer on and the cut/paste function apparently stopped working overnight, and I have no idea why. I would also like to point out that: the copy/paste command does work (both when I right-click and select copy and paste, and when I resort to the Ctrl + C/V thing). The OS installed on the aforementioned computer is Windows 7, and I've already tried restarting it a few times, but no such luck. Being able to use the Ctrl + X/V is fundamental to me, seeing as sometimes I'm supposed to cut and paste bordered cells with pictures inside on Excel, and by right-clicking cut and paste there's a very good chance it will just cut and paste the image and not the cell as a whole... besides, it's faster and I wanna be able to use it!
I have just subrscibed, so feel free to move my thread to a more suitable forum section if it does not belong here.
Thanks

My remote desktop session does not appear to be sending the ctrl+alt+left (CAL) or ctrl+alt+right (CAR) combinations to the target machine.

Yesterday everything worked fine. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64 and could successfully RD to my laptop machine, which is running XP Pro SP2. CAL and CAR worked.

Today I installed SP1 on the Vista machine. Now my RD won't sent CAL or CAR.

I downloaded a simple keyboard tester application and installed it on both machines. Locally on the Vista machine, CAL and CAR are detected. Same thing locally on the XP machine. When I RD from Vista to XP and try the keyboard test the program shoes that it is receiving the CTRL+ALT combination but doesn't register when I hit the left or right arrow key at the same time. Interestingly, the up and down arrows *do* register.

I tried the RD connection from XP to Vista. Everything works normally. I tried an RD connection from another XP SP2 machine to my laptop. It works.

Any ideas? Is there some sort of key binding in Vista that takes the CAL and CAR combinations before RD can get them? Is RD in Vista 64 filtering them out for some reason?

Thanks
Kevan

Why you don?t try to configure the touchpad settings again.
Did you check the settings in the control panel -> mouse ???

I assume you have checked your settings in Control Panel > Mouse Properties?

It will save a lot of time if you can determine whether this is a hardware problem or a software problem.
Try this: Download a copy of UBUNTU. Put this on a USB stick. Boot from the USB stick and choose to Run The Program (you do not need to install it on your hard drive). Then check to see if the mousepad works OK in UBUNTU. If it does then it is a Windows/Software problem. If it doesn't then it is a defective mousepad.

I'm creating this post just fyi should it help anyone else with this problem. Here's what I tried and, at least in my case, how i solved a "mouse left click doesn't work" problem

I have a Logitech wireless laser mouse and use rechargeable AA batteries. The other morning i powered on my computer as usual and tried using my Logitech wireless mouse but left click didn't work (although rt click and mouse movement continued working just fine)

Things i first tried that didn't help:
> Reinstalling Logitech Setpoint and mouse drivers
> Reinstalling Logitech USB transceiver firmware
> Pressing the "reconnect" button on the USB transceiver to reconnect transceiver to wireless mouse
> Changed the mouse batteries a couple times and also tried recently recharged batteries

Then i had a hunch (well, it was really more of a last ditch hopeful guess - but it seems to have worked!)
I removed the batteries and let the mouse sit overnight without any battery inside it. When i put batteries back in the next morning, the mouse has been working fine again ever since. Go figure :stickout:

Is there a way to swap the functions of Fn key and left Ctrl key on the keyboard. I'm used to other keyboards where the keys are switched and I keep pressing Fn when I want to press Ctrl.  I figure I'll get used to it eventually, but when I use the laptop in a docking station with a regular keyboard the control key is in one spot and undocked with the Lenovo keyboard the function key is there instead, which makes it hard to get used to. If not is there a way to disable the Fn + Space bar function that changes the screen resolution. The programs I use use control + space heavily and my screen resolution keeps changing when I don't want it to. It's a small thing I know, but very maddening.

A:Is there a way to swap the Fn key and left Ctrl key

dan, welcome to the forum. unfortunately Fn and Ctrl cannot be swapped.   this has been suggested by users many times so i'm sure lenovo will give the idea heavy consideration. Fn + space can be disabled by uninstalling the 'on-screen magnifier' app from the add/remove programs or programs and features control panel depending on whether you use XP or vista.

New to this, never had a computer problem I couldn't fix before now. I tried to read all the instructions about "before posting" so I hope I didn't miss any~

Anywho, so I'm sitting at my computer chatting on FB and everything is fine, then outta the blue Windows Live Mail starts opening. Eventually I realize it opens when I press the left control key. I didn't know what was going on, eventually tried to restart my computer thinking that would solve it, and it wouldn't boot up so I knew I had an actual problem.

Tried the auto-repair option when it told me windows was unable to boot up. This didn't help. I was able to log on using last known good configuration, but was unable to solve the problem. I uninstalled windows live mail thinking it was the problem, but instead it just tryed to install outlook~

I ran ewido, one of my goto programs when this kinda stuff happens. It found a few registry errors and fixed em but when it got to the memory it got stuck at 19%. I then rebooted into safe mode and re-ran Ewido and it made it 100% through the memory. It is currently scanning the program files folders, the windows folders, and the user folders.

I think the weirdest thing, even weirder than just 1 key attempting to open email program, even in safe mode it is still trying to install outlook when I hit the left control key. For some reason, every time I press the ctrl key, the function becomes the left mouse button click. For example, when I hover the mouse on a icon and press ctrl, it opens the application. In game, when I press ctrl I fire the gun. I tried:

-tried different keyboard and mouse - both USB and ps/2
-reinstalled drivers
-rebooted
-virus and spyware and both clean

I don't know what to do right now but this isn't too big of an issue but it is pretty annoying when I try to play shooting games and try to crouch it fires all my ammo. Also one other thing is that I can't do ctrl+c copy because after i select something and press ctrl it clicks and deselects it.

Something is intercepting ctrl-<left click> and bringing up a new internet explorer homepage on my machine. This is over-riding other programs which are looking for this key combination. I can't find any way to stop it from within internet explorer. Any ideas?

OK I've answered the question myself. nVidia desktop manager was intercepting ctrl-<left click>. I've turned it off and all is fine

This happened on occasion in XP also, but now on my new Laptop with Win7 I see it happening again. Every now and again for some reason I cannot select random files (in a file handler) by holding down the CRTL key and selecting desired files with the left mouse button.

Also sometimes the SHIFT key will not let me select the first and last files for a group selection.

And then again on another boot up they both work again until some unknown combination of events messes it up again.

Anybody know what does this ?

What brand laptop? and are you using the touchpad, or a mouse.

If it is the touchpad see if there is a driver update from the laptop Mfg. Also try blowing out the keyboard with a can of air, you may have some food /crud under the keys.

So I spilled water on my laptop a few months ago and a few keys on the left side of my keyboard lost their funcitonality. Slowly over the next few weeks most of them must have dried out, because they started working again, except for my left Ctrl key. I dealt with it for some months now, but as I need to use my laptop more of recent I am finding not having the left Ctrl key unbearable. Any suggestions? I'm assuming it could be electrical damage below the key itself at this point but not sure. Acer Laptop, Model:  V3-571-6443 Thanks, PQ

Hi,There may be some dust/dirt sticking under the key, try to clean it if you can or get a replacement keyboard and install it by yourself, it's not very expensive, something similar to this:http://www.onlinelaptopbatteries.co.uk/index.aspx?pageid=1222107&prodid=14433499&gs=1&gclid=CKyYyvee...I have posted this link as an example, you can get them locally or in online stores.

Hello, we have to harden Internet Explorer to use in the kiosk mode (-k). The user should not be able to do a thing besides using the application which is loaded. We have set all the meaningful Group Policys like "View menu:
Disable Source menu option" and "Turn off Shortcut menu" under "User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Browser menus". I cant find a way to disable ctrl+u, ctrl+j and
ctrl+h.
