Preferred Solution: who makes the best small storage servers?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't know if this is the right place to write this...but I'll give it a go anyway.

In our office we have a static IP, one windows box and one linux box. The windows box has 1 site on, the linux box has another site on. I would like to be able to give my customers access to these 2 sites as sort of test sites - but I can only work out how to forward port 80 through the firewall to just one of the boxes - how would I allow both boxes to be hosted, through the same IP (writing it out like this it sounds daft, but I can't get another IP address so if there's a way of doing it I would love to know!)

Ta! Paul

A:Setting up small set of web servers help...

In addition to port 80 port 8080 is frequently used for HTTP. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_TCP_and_UDP_port_numbers

You could make one of the web-servers service that port, port-forward as appropriate on the router and ask users to use port 80 for one test site and 8080 for the other.

Maybe not ideal, but quick, easy, workable.

I'm looking to set up a couple of VM hosts and am trying to decide how to set up the storage,
Storage Technolgy - I was thinking about SSDs as our current servers have 146gb SAS drives and we don't have space issues, 256gb SSDs would give us room for future expansion. What model of SSDs would be best? I only have experience with Samsung 830s, are there server grade drives we are not heavy usage?
Connectivity/Backup - I'm unsure how best to connect whatever storage I decide on, I'd like to be able to move VMs between the two Hosts to load balance and for redundancy if one host goes down.

I've had a bit of a look into iSCSI as FC is probably out of my budget and it looks like it would help by centralsing all the VMs, backup could be to a secondary iSCSI host. I'm not sure of the performance I'd get though without going to 10gb.

The other option would just be local raid cards with additional slow SATA storage to cross backup the VMs, looking around most VM hosts have live backup utilities that would do the job then if a host failed it would just be a case of moving the VM to the primary storage from the backup and starting it again. (changing the backup to local until the other host comes back up) I could then back the slow storage to portable disks to take off site in case of loss of both hosts or for data recovery.

I use MetaTrader (MT4) and it's editor which has context sensitive help.

My question is about how I can manually say by a .reg or? quicky util which does the same thing as IE does when view > text size

I am turning to this great forum because nowhere else can I get any response except the usual IE text size changing ideas. MT4 vendor MetaQuotes does not care nor offer any suggestions...

1. any time MetaEditor starts up it has unreadable help text size
2. which I can correct by stopping the editor then start up IE and set text size to large then set text size to small ie, toggle size UP then down
3. now I restart editor and the text size is readable. editor must be getting it's text settings from somewhere? or using IE rendering engine or XP functionality? ...
4. this small text size issue can happen many times during work day when for no apparent reason editor goes back to small help text and must do 2+3 above.

Perhaps IE must use registry? to record like state memory, the current view > text size setting and that MetaEditor must be sensitive to this?

But what gets me is that by going into IE and doing the view > text size when editor is still running and has the small text the text size action has no effect on editor [note that I escape out of editors help before doing IE action] when I reenter its help again the text still small - must actually kill off editor before IE action as explained above.

By the way, both FireFox and IE use vari... Read more

Whenever I try to do a virus scan my computer reboots. I get the following message when I come back up:

The problem was caused by Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys). Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys) was created by Intel Corporation. This product is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

For more information about Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys), go online to the Intel Corporation website.

If you are unable to fix this problem and continue to receive errors, you can also remove Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys).''

When i put on Speedfan while doing a virus or spyware scan, i get the message that my CPU is overheated. My normal temp is 29/30 degrees, but when the scan starts it goes up to 35/36 degrees and suddenly my computer restarts. System temp is 30 and is not causing problems.

I tried to put a big fan in my computer so the air flow is cool enough but it wont stop the problem. What should i do: more fans? I can't imagine it will stop the problem. How is it possible that my CPU is overheating and my system isn't?
Change my hard drive? Speedfan online analysis is saying my hard drive is doing ok. One question: is Intel Storage Driver something i can remove as a program or is it hardware that i need to remove by hand? As you might have noticed: i'm a newbee in this category

A fix is released to improve disk space requirements when trying to install the Windows 10 November update

We have recently addressed an issue that improves the ability to install the Windows 10 November update on systems with low available storage space.

Previously, on systems with small hard drives (16 GB or 32 GB), you may not have been able to free enough space to upgrade, even with the assistance of external storage. In this scenario, Windows Update would report an error when trying to install the November update: ?We found some issues. Select this message to fix and finish updating.? When clicking the ?Fix issues? button, a message would appear that said ?Windows needs more space?, and one option provided is to ?Choose another drive or attach an external drive...? If you selected this option and attached the external drive, Windows was not making good use of that external storage, and you may have seen a message saying that you still needed a similar amount of free space to install the update.

With the fix that we?ve released (KB3124260), Windows will better use external storage, making it much more likely that the install will continue once you select to use an external drive and hit the Refresh button. The fix reduces the amount of space required on the C: drive by over 2 GB.

Although I am one of the many people who have not been able to activate Microsoft's Windows 10 upgrade icon and assistant, I am fairly confident that my W8.1 Tablet is OK for the new OS, except in one respect --- available storage. It only has a 32 GB SSD, most of which is taken up by Windows, leaving at present about 5 GB, whereas 16 GB free HDD space is required. I have been using a variety of strategies to reduce demands on the HD but so far without much success, in particular replacing desktop programs with portable programs on the integral Memory Card, using Cloud storage for files, and of course removing unnecessary programs / apps.

I have seen a brief 'rumour' that MS is working on ways to help owners of 'small devices' with restricted HD storage, Tablets and phones. Has anyone heard about this?

If I understand it right, once I have W10 on my Tablet my storage difficulties will be reduced as I will have greater ability to save and install everything including Store apps to different locations, such as a Memory Cards.

I welcome advice for those of us with 'small devices' who may be facing difficulties with getting W10 installed in the first place. For example, what are the pros / cons of the two methods: using update or using an ISO image?

I have the Yoga 13 with 128GB of hard drive. For some reason my drive only has 100GB and with Office and Windows, I only have about 1GB left which causes me a headache constantly moving files around or deleting stuff to create more room. Questions: How can I find out where all the big files I might not need are and get rid of them? Why did I only have 100GB when I bought a laptop that said I would get 128GB? Can I expand the laptop and get 256GB or do I have to buy another laptop? Thanks for any help here!

Also, 128 GB is an estimate. No HDD/SSD will ever have the stated space or more. All HDDs/SSD will always be smaller than advertise. Install iOrbit Uninstaller, sort program from largest to smallest and then remove the large programs you no longer use. Use Disk Cleanup and before pressing the clean/delete button, select ?Clean System files?.... This way you can delete the Window?s Update installers left on your computer (usually takes up a few gigs if never removed). The above 2 recommendations will make a huge difference

I created a Storage pool with the following setup. Three 3TB drives with parity all in an external enclosure with eSata and USB 2/3 ports. It was connected via USB when created and had production data loaded and tested without any issues.
After a few days of use I decided to see what happened when I tried to access it via the eSata port. No luck, due to a driver on the eSata card issue with Win 8. So I powered all back down and plugged back in via USB. At this point the Storage pool went
into the state as per the screenshot below. Any suggestions to either fix the issue and/or retrieve the data that is in the volume?

My company's network isn't being monitored!
I was given the task of identifying the services that run in DHCP, DNS and Print Servers that need and should to be monitored.
A list of the various services would be what I'm looking for, because then I could google each one and "learn them".
The question is assuredly vague, but I would appreciate any kind of assistance and explanation.

About the DNS Server services I found something like this, if it helps (probably wrong):
Thank you very much.

Edit 1:

Our infrastructure is Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2016.
CPU and Storage are already being monitored.
I'm trying to promote an idea. I am trying to monitor the availability of the DHCP, Print, DNS servers but I need to know the running services/processes of each server that should be monitored.

A:Unmonitored Servers! Services that must be monitored in DHCP, DNS, Print Servers?

If by "monitoring" you mean setting up firewall, then short and easy answer is:
Any service that is involved in networking should be monitored.
especially those services which are listeners, which are opening up network sockets on machine.

first thing haxors usually do is scan for listening services, that the first step toward discovering vulnerabilities.

Has anyone tried the new Storage Spaces feature in Windows 8? Your experience with it?

More specifically:

1. If this system is used on a shared network with other operating systems such as XP and Windows 7, can the storage pool drives be set up as shared, and become visible and usable from the XP and Win 7 machines?

2. If you have a Network Backup drive, like WD My Book Live, will it see and back up the Storage Spaces configured drive just like any other drive on the network?

A:Storage Spaces (Storage Pool) Experience?

I've only set this up on a Windows Server 2012 configuration therefore I cannot provide the exact steps on how to set one up in a client environment. That being said, a storage space/pool is essentially a virtual disk that resides on one or multiple physical disks allowing you to accumulate free space. For example if I have multiple servers with free space on their data drives I can then create a storage pool to accumulate this. To allocate this storage pool/space to a user or machine you will need to decide what you wish to do with it. Below are a couple of examples of how:

Share via Windows Folder Sharing (UNC Path)Use iSCSI to use the current ethernet infastructure allowing you to assign the storage pool/space a drive letter to the client machineIn a server environment you may wish to use it for DFS (Distributed File System) to maintain redundancy

Personally I use my storage pool as an iSCSI drive for which i have partitioned.

You can only use the free space of a non Windows install drive. To my knowledge you cannot overcome this with partitioning.

In relation to your second question, you will only able to use the share as a safepoint backup if it is shared via Windows Folder Sharing. For example: \\computername\share

Also you will need to make sure that the NAS is on the same workgroup as the Windows 8 machine hosting the storage pool otherwise it will not be able to find the share. Hopefully this is what you asking however pleas... Read more

A:Small window and small text

The old-style display properties panel is now located at Control Panel -> Personalization -> Window Color -> Advanced appearance settings.

Whether these will have any effect will depend on the theme that you are using. If you are using an Aero theme, chances are this panel will be useless for you. If, however, you are using the Windows Basic theme, i.e. have Aero turned off, then this panel will work just like in XP.

These settings have nothing to do with whether your OS is 32- or 64-bit.

Finally, most programs have their own tools to change the font size. For example in Firefox you can press Ctrl and move the mouse wheel while holding that key. you will see the font size change.

Hope that helps.

I cant seem to *double click * and get into my Hard disk(C/D/F external) , instead it will pompt me what programme to open this file.
the only way to get into the Hard disk is through right click > explore.
Its very troublesome to right click > explore just to acesss my hard drive
Many Thanks,Xavier

A:Just a Small Small Problem

is there an option to open it in a folder to explore by yourself? if it acts like that, meaning a bit like when you put in a cd, you could always select the open in explorer option and check the "always do this" box. If it acts as if it tries to open a file, then i have no clue. Might be that windows for some odd reason identifies it as a file (if you have the option to search the web for an appropriate program you could do that and see what comes up and what file format it claims it to be). Im thinking registry error, but the real experts at this site probably have another idea.

Hey guys... I have to pick a new server for our organization... and our board here zeroed onto the IBM X3650 and HP DL380 G5 Servers...
There was a vast difference between the two:
The IBM X3650 for INR 160,000 (Approx US$ 4000) and
the HP DL380 G5 for INR 280,000 (Approx US$ 7000)

So now the board wants me to explain to them why the difference between the 2 servers when the specs are almost similar.

Could you guys recommend me which one is better and why?

A:Need Help with Servers.

Processor wise they are the same, but with the HP system, you can have more ram, up to...68GB I believe as opposed to 48 max on the IBM, as well as I believe the HP will allow for more storage space.

Heres the links I used for a quick comparison:

Q: Servers

I have noticed that on three sites it takes 5 minutes or more to connect to their sites. Other sites it takes just a few seconds.

I have been told that reason it takes so long for these sites is they are at a really long distance from the servers for AT&T.

Is that true or is there a more complicated issue? My computer speed is about 2.5 Mbps.

not sure if this belongs in the hardware section of not

I have 8 rack mounted Dell Powervault MD3000 servers and currently do not have a battery backup for any of them.

I need to implement a disaster recovery scenerio where I am able to keep these servers running for days at a time if the power goes out.

My initial idea was to just buy a small UPS for each one that was good enough to run for 1-2 hours (no monitors etc) and that should run me around $1000-$1600.

Within that 2 hour span I should be able to start up a generator at the side of our building (output is 10,000 watt 16hp each outlet is 120V 19Amp) and then run a power cable (8) to each UPS to get power flowing again. From what I understand as long as the UPS has line conditioning I should be able to deal with any dirty power that might come from the generator.

Is there a better way to go about doing this other than spending $2000+ on a single UPS that they all plug into? Im not too crazy about the single UPS idea as it could slowly degrade over time and then they all go down after only a few mins vs 1 or 2 of the 8failing (it might be years before they even get used for this remember). But really I have never implemented something like this so I am just speculating.

does anyone have any suggestions from previous experience on how to implement a setup like this?

thanks, jeff

Hi there,

I have a win XP Pro machine connected to a 1mb broadband service in my home. I am interested in web servers and all that kind of thing, but don't really have a clue. I have a few questions I wonder if a couple of you guys could help me out?
1. Is a web server just a normal machine? Like a PC, that is dedicated to it's purpose?
2. How does a web server connect to the internet? is it through an Network Card?
3. Can you connect a web server directly to a home network, or does the internet have to be plugged straight into it?
4. What kind of software do I need to set one up?
5. What is the cheapest way I can set one up? (including purchasing one)

Thanks for your help guys.

A web server is just another task running on your computer, you don't need a dedicated machine for it. A web server connects to the Internet the same way you do with IE, using TCP/IP protocol. If you have a broadband router, you'll have to configure the HTTP port (#80) for inbound traffic from the Internet for the web server. There are tons of free web servers from very simple to Apache. If you opt for something like Apache, be prepared to spend considerable time learning the system before you have a web site on-line.

FWIW, most broadband accounts give you web space external to your location, my website is on my Comcast space.

I'm trying to forward some ports on my router, and when adjusting "Internet Protocol", I am missing a "DNS Server address". When I go to run>command> ipconfig /all, I only see a single address beside "DNS Servers". Does it mean that the Preffered and Alternate DNS server are identical--that one address? Help would be appreciated,

My small business has two PC's that are networked together. Now I want to go to the next level - to buy a server and hook up the two PC's to the server. Dell has servers for as low as $399, but then they offer Windows for Server OS as an option for another $499 (standard) or $1299 (premium). They don't sell computers without OS's, so do servers need OS's? Why are they optional? The OS costs more than the entire server! If it is a must, what is the advantages of the premium over the standard? Finally, what is the difference between a 'server' (poweredge SC440) and just a regular PC, other than you don't get a keyboard and mouse and monitor with the server? Is it just a more sturdy hard drive and power supply? Maybe I don't even need a server? Is there a resource for these questions, like servers for dummies?

Q: Servers

im thinking about buying a server ,any thoughts would be helpful thanks.

First thought: you have no clue, do you?

How much money do you have?
What is the server supposed to do?
What are you going to install on it?
Where are you going to put the machine?
How many people are you going to provide the services to?
What services exactly are they going to be?
How important is uptime to you?
Are you sure you can't do it with a random old PC?

All day today I have been trying to connect to Battle.net on Warcraft 3. IT hasnt worked since 11 this morning. It happened with all computers on my network, so I tried plugging my cable modem directly into one of the computers, and I still cannot connect. I have tried all 4 gateways, and I cant connect.

Are all servers down or is it a problem with my internet? I am getting pretty mad cause I stayed home sick today and really wanted to play WC3 and I cant.
