P51 on ThinkPad 90W Ultra Dock not detecting monitor

Q: P51 on ThinkPad 90W Ultra Dock not detecting monitor

Hi, I'm using a Lenovo P51 with M2200 graphic card and have a docking station 40A2. I wish to connect the two monitors to my docking station, one is VGA cable and another one is HDMI. When I dock my P51 to the docking station, the monitors could not be detected. I tried to configured my bios setting to discrete graphic setting but nothing changed. Try to put shared on dock display also but nothing works. When I connected one of the monitor HDMI cable to the laptop directly without going through the docking station, it works perfectly but I could not connect the VGA cable monitor to the laptop without a converter and it defeat the purpose of having a docking station. Anyone encounter this problem and has a solution for this problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, Everyone. Got me a nice little x270 to replace my old x201.  Happy enough with the machine, but getting it connected to my accessories (monitor, keyb, mouse, ethernet) is a bit of a chore. This machine appears to have a "proper" dock port on the bottom.  Is there a compatible ultradock available for the model 20HN x270?  By proper - I mean, Not USB.  A nice dock I can simply drop the machine into when I'm at the home office.. Thanks!

Hi all, I purchased both a T490 and an ultra docking station. Both worked for about a month, then the dock (i think) abruptly stopped working. I plug the laptop into the dock, and neither monitor turns on. The external mouse and keyboard still work. I've tried everything I could find on the forum, but all the drivers and firmware are already installed (from what I have seen).  Please help, I have tons of work coming up very soon and I am severely limited with this tiny screen. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, I am looking for some help, I have a T450 that has been working away on a Thinkpad Ultra Dock with no issues, then all of a sudden it will not charge while docked!! Take it out of the dock and charge directly and it works fine, I tried replacing with a new docking station the exact model but again it does not charge the laptop while in the dock, I have switched out the battery and it is still the same. I have fully updated the BIOS etc and still have the same issue, I tried updating the Ultra Dock firmware but run into issues as the firmware update will only run while docked and also has power, but as the laptop is not detecting power I cannot proceed , I tried updating out of the dock but it does not proceed either as it cannot detect the docking station. Everything else works via the docking station HDMI, USB, DVI, Ethernet  all working perfect, has anyone came accross this issue?

I have a W541 and it always worked well with the dock and dual external monitors, that is until the firmware was updated by Lenovo System Update to the Latest Version: 2.33.000 about a week ago. Now when you boot the laptop in the dock, the post shows on the two external monitors then they go black and seem to disconnect as the power saving icon shows on both monitors. If you undock the laptop at this point and immediately re-dock, the two monitors light up and no more issues. While this isnt a huge issue, it is very annoying since it always worked properly before the update. Any suggestions on a possible fix are much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi.  I'm hoping I can get this resolved on this forum.I just got my system and am trying to connect my 3 external monitors.    My setup is as follows:Monitor 1 - laptop screen - works.Monitor 2 - HDMI out to HDMI in - worksMonitor 3 - DP out to HDMI in via a DP-HDMI cable.  - worksMonitor 4 - DP ou to DVI in via a DP-DVI adapter - doesn't work. I can't figure out how to make this work.I also tried this setup:Monitor 1 - laptop screen - works.Monitor 2 - VGA out to VGA in - worksMonitor 3 - HDMI out to HDMI in - worksMonitor 4 - DP out to HDMI in via a DP-HDMI cable.  - doesn't work. Incidentally in this configuration, when I closed the laptop screen this monitor worked.  Also on a related note, the Nvidia Quadro P500  is sitting idle as the Intel UHD 620 is doing all the work.  How can I control this? Thanks for any suggestions. Sal

A:Thinkpad P52S Ultra Dock and 3 External Monitors

As stayed in PSREF, P52s supports up to three independent displays. Laptop's screen includes in this limit, meaning you can use two external displays at that time. When you close the lid, you can use three external displays. To use more, you'll need some sort of USB adapter to increase such a limit. Regarding other question, you can't disable Intel GPU - it's always active and it's always controls screen output. NVIDIA's dGPU can be configured to be used in selected applications, making them to work with higher performance. P52 and P72 for sure have an ability to disable Intel iGPU, giving the control of screen output to dGPU. Probably P1 and/or X1 Extreme have the same feature too.

Yesterday, I updated my T450s and, among other updates,I updated the Ultra Dock 90W firmare to version 2.29.00.  Afterward, when the laptop is docked, with the cover shut, and I try to power up the unit, it won't do so.  When I open the laptop in the dock, the power indicator is green and there is a green light on the function key.  No matter what I try, the machine won't power up after this.  If I force it to shut down and then try to power it up open instead, it powers up normally and both the laptop screen and the attached monitor work and, if I close the cover after, the attached monitor still works.  Obviously, I can use the machine docked with this work around, but I can't figure out why it won't work when I try to poweer it up closed.  I subsequently updated to version 2.30.00 and the behavior continues. What am I missing here?

I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad Ultra usb 3.0 dock (40A8) with two 1080p monitors (HDMI + DisplayPort). Using the display on the laptop as my third monitor. I have my USB mouse and keyboard plugged into the dock as well as headphones and gigabit ethernet. I also have a second gigabit ethernet dongle plugged into one of the usb ports on the dock. The dock is paired to my Thinkpad P52 workstation. My issue is that while I'm working my display will freeze (mouse, keyboard still responsive on laptop monitor). Then I'll hear the USB disconnect sound, my screens will go black, then they'll come back a few seconds later as if everything is normal. My network connection drops momentarily as well. At first this was just annoying but I've recently moved over to a soft phone and now this causes big problems. When the dock 'restarts' I lose my audio connection to the phone and the brief network connection drop causes my call to drop. I've tried all the basic stuff such as updating the DisplayLink drivers to the latest, turning off USB selective suspend in power settings, using a different usb port. Is this problem specific to my dock or is anybody else experiencing this issue?

I have a thinkpad X1 Yoga 4th and a USB-C gen2 dock (40AS) that neither of my two Dell U2417H monitors (one HDMI-->HDMI, the other DisplayPort-->HDMI) are detected on. I've installed the latest driver  and rebooted, etc. Everything else - network, USB keyboard & mouse, USB 3.0 hub, audio, etc. - works, but neither monitor does a thing nor does the OS detect them. The HDMI-HDMI monitor works just fine when I plug it directly into the Thinkpad (can't test the DisplayPort directly as there's none on the notebook), but nothing when I plug it back into the dock. It's worked perfectly before so I have no reason to believe there's any problem with either monitor or cable. Further, testing the theory that perhaps the ports were bad, Lenovo shipped me a second one - and the problem reoccurs, so it's unlikely it's the dock. That leaves software. There are audio and network drivers for the dock in the driver package (and they work fine), but no display drivers. Am I missing something here? There aren't that many places to go wrong.

Before that, all three were getting up to 2560x1440.Nothing else has changed in the setup, I checked System Update and all drivers are up to date, restarted the laptop, undocked and docked it back in with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas on what I may try to get this back like it was? Thanks you very much in advance!

I have just taken delivery of a T470p and have done a fresh install of Windows 10 Enterprise and updated that to version 1703 build 15063.540. The T470p replaces an aging X240. I used the X240 with a ThinkPad Ultra Dock type 40A2 (P/N SD20F82750) with 2 ThinkVision LT2452p monitors attached via DisplayPort. Everything worked reasonably fine with the X240 docked - both monitors ran at 1920x1200 resolution. I'd get the occasional problem where I'd have to open and close the X240's lid to force it to realise it was docked, but I could live with that. But...if I dock the T470p then neither monitor works. Both monitors' power LED turn green when I dock the laptop (so I assume the dock and the monitors are talking to one another) but they then turn orange and there isn't a picture on either monitor. If I unplug one of the DisplayPort cables from the Ultra Dock one of the monitors gets a picture, but as soon as I plug the cable back into the dock the monitor goes blank. Is this a known problem? My employer are about to order 40-50 T470p laptops but if we need to purchase new Ultra Docks as well I think we will have to have a rethink. Kind regards, /Neil

Hello, I recently bought the Ultra Dock 90 for my T450s.  I have one external monitor currently connected through the dock.  When I push the power button on the docking station (laptop lid closed) to turn on the computer, the computer turns on, but the external monitor does not engage.  When I lift the laptop lid, there is no image on the laptop screen either.  The laptop is on, but does not respond to any key stokes on the actual laptop.  I then have to do a hard reboot using the power button on the laptop. If I initially power the laptop by lifting the lid and hitting the laptop power button, the compter boots and my external screen works.  I can then close the laptop lid and everything is fine. I know the power button on the dock should power the computer and external monitor on.  I am guessing there is a simple solution to resolve this, but I am not a computer person and need help. One thing to note - when I lift the lid after trying to power the laptop through the dock, I see that the Function Green Light is illuminated.  Not sure if this information is helpful in determining the problem. Please help! Peterrabbit33

I have a Thinkpad W540 with a Lenovo Ultra Dock Docking Station (40A20170US). A:Unable to connect to 3 monitors to Ultra Dock (Thinkpad W540) in Advanced Mode BIOS Setting

So I fixed the issue for myself and just wanted to post in case somebody else had the same issue.  I took the following steps to fix the issue:[Background: BIOS is in "Standard" display mode to begin with; I had already updated the docking station's firmware first with a program called fwdphb03.exe and then with Lenovo's update utility.]1) In Windows, I uninstall drivers for the Intel Graphics and K1100 dedicated card.2) Restart, go into BIOS, switch to "Advanced" mode under the Display tab.  I also have the option selected to start up on the docks in the BIOS Display tab.3) Booted into Windows (8.1) and it looked like the Intel Graphics drivers were automatically downloaded. I then ran Lenovo's System Update utility to get the latest video drivers.  Under the optional tab in the Lenovo update utility, I selected the "Optimus" drivers and hit download/install.  It installed, and I had to restart.4) Booted into Windows again, ran Lenovo update utility again, and again it had a video driver to install when I checked for updates.  I installed that, had to restart again.5) Booted into windows, checked screen resolution and saw that no external monitors were showing.6) I then decided to get a driver straight from the source.  Downloaded: the following file from  Nvidia: 334.95-quadro-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe.  I ran the installation, it did a "Clean" installation with everything checked off. Have been happily running windows 10 - with dual monitors, but since a recent update, the system once re-docked will no longer re-detect that it using different monitors. Previously i could use it:1. Un-docked - at 1600 x 9002. then when i put it to sleep3. Then dock it and resumed:     it would     a) switch to 1920 x 1080, and     b) also detect and display on the second monitor - no intervention required. Now, it remains in it's prior "state" (it neither changes state nor outputs to the second monitor) - only outputting to the first external monitor - but at 1600 x 900. Thus since a recent change, it is not "re-detecting" the "change in state" on resume, ONLY when i now do a full restart. The update may have been a Windows update, but on the same day i also installed a Toshiba Dynadock - with dual display port support. I have used the Lenovo system update to update the driver - now it is at 10.18.10.4425 - and as the driver loaded the monitors re-detected, and corrected - but later the problem is persisting. Does anyone know how to force the driver to re-detect on resume not just on restart? Or is this a "consequence of doing things in a certain order" System:Lenovo T430s laptop -HD Graphics 4000  version 10.18.10.4425 (from Lenovo System Update)UPDATED: to 10.18.10.4653 - 7/4/2017with a Lenovo ThnikPad Usb 3.0 Pro Dock (dual HDMI/DVI ports)dual BenQ GL2450 monitors.

Aryeh,

Perhaps you'd be willing to comment on a hardware issue.
I also recently replaced my wife's desktop PC (which I built!) with a Thinkpad T480 that we planned to link with a Thinkpad Basic docking Station (L440?). She has an old, Samsung SyncMaster 214T monitor that required (per our Lenovo salesperson) a DVI ot Display Port cable, which I purchased and connected. Of course, the docked laptop won't recognize the presence of the SuncMaster monitor suggesting the cable may be a problem. It's a standard DisplayPort Male to DVI-I Male Adapter Cable (6 ft). Any thoughts?

Hey everyone. As the headline says, I have a ThinkPad 90W Pro Dock and a ThinkPad T470 laptop with the following specs:i5 CPU8GB of RAMWindows 10I'd like to buy three identical monitors - nothing fancy, something between 27" and 32", sub-4k resolution, intended for corporate office use exclusively - and connect them for a cohesive screen experience. Ideally, connect everything via digital connections so there are zero/minimal differences in resolution and image quality on each monitor. Is this possible? First off, can my laptop/dock even run three external monitors? There was some conflicting information online. If it can, am I limited to 1 analog (VGA) and 2 digital (DVI and DisplayPort) outputs as a result of the port options on the dock, or is there some workaround for that? Could I upgrade to the ThinkPad 90W Ultra Dock which has 1 HDMI and 2 DisplayPorts as a possible solution? Would really appreciate anyone's input. And if anyone has a recommended monitor that would fit my needs, I'd love to hear your suggestion

ThinkPad W540Ultra Dock 40A2NVIDIA Quadro K2100M HELP PLEASE!  I need to hook up 5 additional Monitors (6 including the W540 LCD).  This is for Stock Trading. I have all 5 additional monitors on a monitor stand, it's a sweet setup! I have set the Graphic BIOS on the W540 to Advanced. In Advanced Mode I thought that all of the Video Ports would be live.  Here is what I can get to work: W540 LCD Monitor, two Monitors using the Dock's two Display Ports, and one Monitor using the Dock's VGA Port.  Althhough they work, the resolution is not sharp as expected except on the W540 LCD.  I cannot get the two remaing Monitors to work. I tried using the HDMI Port on the Dock connected to the HDMI on the Monitor, and the DVI-D Port on the Dock, using a DVI-D to HDMI converter cable (HDMI connected to Monitor) and that won't work.  I've also tried using the USB 3.0 cables.  I cannot get two of the 5 monitors to work. Is is possible at all with the setup I have, or do I need to go to a USB Display Adapter?  If I need to go the USB Display Adapter route, can I still use some of the cables I have and only use the USB Display Adapter for the two that won't work.  Or, do I need to get a Plugable 7 Port USB Adapter and connect them all up this way.  Using the USB Display Adapter should I connect them all using HDMI or VGA? Thanks in advance for helping me out, I have multiple hours invested and no hair left!&nbs...
