Server to server virtual connection (VPN?)

Q: Server to server virtual connection (VPN?)

I recently started administering an existing network of a small company. There are two locations, about 100 miles apart. Each has a Win2000 server and about 12 workstations each, some XP Pro and some Win2000 Pro. Each server is connected to the internet using a DSL account, and the Win2000 servers are configured as routers. I want to be able to map one server to the other, and vice versa. I want users to be able to use a database on one server from the other location. I am not sure how exactly I would best be able to do this; do I need to set up a VPN, and if so, what exactly do I need to click on to enable incoming and outgoing communications, so that these servers can see eachother and talk? Can it be done with just the Win2000Server or do I actually need to buy routers or other software? I have messed around with the VPN connection wizard but can not get a connection established. RRAS is not somehting I am familiar with, so that is where I got stuck. I am pretty new to all of this so as much detailed help would be appreciated!
Thank you,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm trying to install ISA Server 2006 on a server 2003 virtual server and I keep getting errors during installation. I read the installation logs after it fails, and it states that it failed to delete a previous SQL Installation. Specifically a folder named MSSQL$MSFW.
This is the error message:
Deleting previous MSDE installation directory <C:\Program Files\microsoft sql server\MSSQL$MSFW>
Setup failed. Error returned: 0x643
MSDE Installation failed, hr=80070643
Performing rollback (uninstall) of firewall

I have also tried installing SQL, but it does not create that folder, and it still fails.
I googled this and other people have had this error and if they created that directory for ISA to delete, it worked. It did not for me though. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone find solutions?
Could it be that ISA will not install on a virtual server? Install notes say nothing and neither does Microsoft.
Thanks.
Andrew

Hi! I'm trying to setup a VPN lab using windows virtual server 2005. I need to setup a 5 computer network. I'm trying to do this on 3 computers. I had virtual server setup on 2003 server enterprise, and was going to pit XP on it. The install part on the setup page for XP was greyed out. I looked up the documentation, and it said I could use XP as a host, but it wasn't listed in the guest OSs. So I went to a computer I have XP Pro on, installed IIS, then virtual server. When I go to the page to setup a virtual machine, it asks for credentials. I'm already logged in as the administrator, the only account on the computer. Well, I type in my user name and password, and it tells me I don't have permission to access the page. I created another administrator account, restarted the computer, went to the virtual server page, it asks for credentials, I type in the new administrator account, and get the same thing---I don't have permission. What is going on? The XP computer is a stand -alone---it's not a member of a domain. The lab calls for this computer to be a stand-alone. Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm currently looking for a new web host provider and ran into Global Servers, this provider uses virtual servers for web and email hosting. My question is, if anyone here uses a service similar, is it easy to use? is it reliable(especially email) or should I stick with a normal web hosting company. My current problem is our office sends cad files which can be quite large, many providers limit email size and/or attachment sizes so my options have been limited. I have thought about using an ftp server but the people have been using email to send contracts and cad files and would resist change. So changing the way things are done is not an option at the moment. Any help or guidence would be appreciated, I've spent 6 straight hours today looking at providers and they all claim the same things...but do they...I don't have the time to find out that they don't. I need one that delivers on promises and is reliable.

Thanks

Hi all, I have a quick problem here and hopefully one of you may have run into the same issue and will be able to help shed some light for me. Our company has hosted email through Godaddy, and I have installed SMTP Virtual Server to run off our Domain Controller so that we can relay emails from two hardware devices (MFD and a scanner) and a server based application to our emails.

This all works fine as long as we do not email to our @companyname.com email address. Companyname.com is also the name of our domain (and the name of our website, which we had to create a forward lookup in DNS to be able to access within our network). It is not a Go Daddy issue as we have other email addresses that do not end with @companyname.com on Go Daddy which work just fine with this setup. I am assuming that the conflict is with the domain name on our network and the second part of the email address being the same. If anybody else has run into this issue, or knows a fix I would greatly appreciate it!

A:Need your help!!! About Vps(Virtual private server)

Hi vuvankhanhdhhh welcome to Sevenforums,

I believe you are talking about a VPN (Virtual Private Network)

To start you off, here is some reading material about VPN's: HowStuffWorks "How VPNs Work"

Couple of things to note:
If your torrent client is maxing out your bandwidth then a VPN won't help. A network connection is only as fast as the slowest link in the chain, and if that's your internet connection, then you will see no benefits.

If however your torrent speeds are slow because of Traffic shaping (the policy of ISP's giving certain traffic, such as web browsing and VOIP priority over others, such as p2p) then a VPN will almost certainly help, as the connection is encrypted your ISP can't tell that you are torrenting.

There are many VPN providors out there, although it has to be said, the best one's aren't free. Two that I would recommend, that I personally have used in the past are Its Hidden and CyberGhost VPN, both have a free product with low usage caps and no speed guarantee's, but they can at least give you an idea if they will help. Full setup instructions are on the site:

ItsHidden:Home

Cyberghost (german site translated into english so may read a bit weirdly): Surf anonymously - Download now and use for free | CyberGhost VPN

I have installed apache and edited the configuration file putting listen, 192.168.2.101 8080 in the correct place. I have setup a static IP address at 192.168.2.101.

I then setup a virtual server through Belkin's setup utility, HTTP server IP 192.168.2.101 External Port Start 8080 end 8080 Internal Port Start 8080 End 8080.

Im then told that I must use ports 8080 as the router says port 80 is already in use, this port therefore matches my webserver configuration file settings. Now when I type in 192.168.2.101:8080 Its all good and my page is displayed, but when I try and use my routers IP address to access my page i.e 80.24.16.23:8080 I recieve a "The Page Cannot Be Displayed".

I can telnet to my router but if i try telnet on port 8080 there is no response.

Thankyou

And how can i get access to the internet within the Virtual PC if running XP Pro and the notebook itself has a wireless card built in?

I have downloaded Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005 (currently a free download) and would like to install it on my Windows XP Pro system. The documentation with this software references IIS and requires it be also downloaded and installed. I'm confused about where to go on Microsoft's site to download the "World Wide Web Service component of Internet Informations Services (IIS)." I've downloaded and installed the Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager for Windows XP, however I don't see anything in the components or documentation for about a "web component."

1. Have I downloaded the correct file?

2. If this is not the correct file, what should I download and where specifically can I find it?

3. What component of this program (or the proper program) is the world wide web service component?

4. Finally, I see references to VSWebApp.exe. Is that, by any chance, what I'm in need of and if so, where on Microsoft's site can I download it? My searches have failed to help me find it.

I'm certain, it's apparent I'm a newbie. I'm usually able to google my way to what I need to know, but I've failed miserably this time. Any help would be welcomed.

IIS is already present on your machine, just not installed, and the "World Wide Web Service" is a component of IIS - get it like this:

Start - Settings - Control Panel
Add/Remove Windows Components
Check "Internet Information Services"
---> Click "Details" to de-select SMTP and/or select FTP services if you want
Click OK and Next

Hi! I've been trying to setup a virtual network using Microsoft virtual server 2007. The documentation is sketchy at best. I finally have it setup on 2003 server enterprise with 2003 server standard as the guest OS. I'm trying to get the network adapter to work. It first said it was unplugged ( it said it was an intel adapter), but then I clicked external network and it shows a 3com adapter, which I don't have. I figure it's the default adapter for the virtual machine. It shows as connected. I configured it with the settings for my subnet, then tried to ping computers on the subnet, and it timed out---didn't make the connection. I've been googling for a few days, and I found that you can use the physical adapter in the computer, but no where can I find out how to do this. How can i setup the guest OS to use the conputer's physical adapter? Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a HP DL380 G4 Server that is running Virtual Server 2005.

I want to test an application on a virtual guest that uses a parralel port
dongle for software security.

The DL380 server does not have a parrallel port so I purchased a PCI based
IO card and installed it in the server. The PCO slots on the server are PCI-X.

The server is running Windows 2003 server and detected the device and I was
able to install the drivers from the cd-rom that came with the card.

Device manager on the host servers show that there is an LPT port.

However, when I go into the Virtual Server administrator and try to map that
LPT1 port to a virtual guest the port dow not appear and thus cannot be
selected.

Is anyone able to confirm that what I am doing is possible? Does virtual
server only recognize 'real' LPT ports? Any other suggestions?

Ok, I did a search for Virtual Server 2005 on here and didn't find anything so here goes:

I have a machine that is running up to 15 virtual machines using Virtual Server 2005. These machines are used for developers to test software and configurations.

I've read through Microsoft's documentation and much of it is written probably to confuse the heck out of you.

What I would like to accomplish is to have multiple snapshots of a disk. For example, let's say I have a Windows XP virtual machine that I have created. I install all updates on it and it's just a bare OS. I want to take a snapshot of that and have it saved. Then I install some software on it, let's say the software is version 1.0. After the software is installed, I want to take another snapshot. After taking a snapshot of version 1.0 of the software, I want to run tests and update a COMPONENT of the software to a newer version. After doing that I want to take another snapshot...etc. etc. etc.

Once all of these snapshots were taken, I want the ability to be able to roll back to ANY of those snapshots by just selecting it from a "list". Is this possible with Virtual Server 2005? I've read about what they call "differencing disks" and i don't think that would work for this situation.

Any ideas? Should I just copy the hard drive image as it changes manually, or does microsoft have some type of way to do this w/ out copying the disk every time a change is mad... Read more

I recently migrated my MDT/WDS server from a physical machine to a VMware virtual machine. Prior to migrating it, my PXE TFTP transfers took less than 20 seconds and they are currently taking a few minutes. Nothing in my environment changed other than
migrating to the virtual. Additionally, after migrating to VM my boot.wim loads and boots but does not run the start of my task sequence. This happens intermittently, sometimes a reboot or two fixes the issue and the task sequence runs without any issues.
I have attempted to change my max TFTP block sizes to 16784 but this had no effect. I am only running these deployments in unicast with a max of three or four machines pulling images. Today, for instance I have two machines on my bench. One imaged fine,
the other wont contact the Deployment server. It does not even register with the MDT monitoring server. Not sure what else can be done. I have not done any packet caps but given that nothing in my network changed I am not sure that would yield any results.

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this particular question, but it's technically an installation problem. If it's in the wrong forum, I apologize.

I've just recently started a Computer Information Technology program at a university, and I'm in my first class, which is an intro class which is online as a summer class. My teacher does not have a text book for us, and he says it's a "research class" where we have to figure out everything on our own. All in all, he's not offered me anything at all that would help me figure out how to install Server 2003 on a virtual PC, and I'm not the only student having problems with trying to do this with zero instructions (for what it's worth, I'm in another class in the program which is nothing like this complete lack of instruction).

I ultimately have to make a video showing that I have the programs loaded (Virtual PC-done, MySQL-done, Server 2003-problems all week long), running, and then explain them, but I just can't get Server 2003 to work at all on my Windows 7 machine. I think I could probably get Server 2008 to work, but the university only uses 2003, hence my problem.

Basically, I downloaded the Virtual PC and Windows XP bundle off of Microsoft's site and installed those. I have created a virtual PC, and it's running XP SP3. Now, if I try to install Server 2003 on the virtual PC, it gives me various errors according to which installer I try to use:

A:Cannot install Server 2003 SP2 on a virtual PC running XP SP3.

You need to install Server 2003 in its own VM, not in a VM that already has XP in it. There are many ways to install an OS into Virtual PC - I suggest googling for instructions. We can't exactly tell you how, since it's a research project you have to complete.

Think of it this way - if you have a brand new computer with a brand new hard drive, would you install Windows 7 on it and then try to install Server 2003 inside of Windows 7? No, you would install Server 2003 on the brand new hard drive.

Hi,

My company bought out a company recently and now I have to manage a new server. The server is windows 2000 server that is getting fairly old now (not sure exact age of server). There are no more than 10 users accessing the server. It is running out of hard drive space and sometimes the tape backup drive acts up. This server does a bunch of different jobs. The server is running exchange server 2000, a blackberry server for a couple users, ms sql server (I think 2003?) for some accounting software and it is also a file server.

I was thinking of replacing it with a windows 2008 server but that would mean buying all new server software and office 2007 to connect to exchange 2007. Than I would need to migrate data to the new server. I have a some experience with migrating right now as I have setup a test lab to try things out using virtualbox.

So I have also been thinking about converting the windows 2000 server to a virtual machine and running vmware or other virtual machine software on a new server and using the image from the old server.

So my question is, would converting the server to a virtual machine and running it that way be a good idea? It would save a lot of money in software. Does any one have any pro's and con's to this type of idea or would getting a new server be the best option?

Thanks for all the help.

A:need advice if I should convert a server to a virtual machine

In my limited experience, virtualization is best for larger corporations that want to reduce the amount of hardware, energy consumption, and space requirements. A lot of the time, if you're a smaller company it would actually cost more in licensing costs to virtualize than to buy another server.

But when I connect to the virtual server it just says: Connecting to virtual server... and it times out after 5minutes.

All my virtual servers are running locally, they are able to start and are running fine, I just cannot connect to them.
Also the ability to turn virtual servers off tends to hang and I have to kill the processes and restart the services for it to stop.

Does anyone know of a workaround for this problem?

I have Windows Vista Enterpriser 64 bits Edition with 4 GB RAM. I Have
installed Visrtual Server R2 64 bits edition and then I?ve installed the
virtual machines of MOC 6451A- Planning, Deploying and Managing Microsoft
System Center Configuration Manager 2007. When Im trying to start a virtual
machine, i received the error "Not enough memory to start virtual machine".
That?s not true, because I?ve got 2,5 GB free. Anybody can help me?

I can?t specify the memory, because virtual server, for Microsoft Learning
Machines is only the engine. When I?ve finished the installing of the microsoft
virtual machines under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Learning\6451\Drives I can
see the *vmc and *vhd files and I have an executable file with name
"LauncherApplication.exe" inside of C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Learning\6451\Data that launch a Window of Microsoft Learning with a little
windows where I can see the name of the diferent machines with two buttons to
click in "Launch" or click on "Reset". I can reset the machines bacause the
machines are only for academic purposes. This is a characteristic of this
virtual machines and this work under my notebook with Windows XP SP3 or SP2
and 2 GB RAM, but not work under my other notebook with Windows Vista and 4
GB RAM. Under Windows XP when I click the "Launch" button to launch one
machine vmrc.exe start and the machine start but in Windows Vista a screen... Read more

I have just made some changes to my PageFile settings in Win2k server and am getting strange results.
I made a 2.5GB partition for the PageFile and allocated the entire amount as the pagefile to reduce fragmentation and increase performance. However the Virtual Memory settings do not reflect the correct amount and I'm getting some strange errors: "Delayed Write Back Failed writing to Device .... " which might be related.

In the screen I've posted you can see that the total VM amount does not equal what I've allocated. Obviously there was, originally, a PageFile on Drive C, but I got rid of it and put one on Drive F. In any case the PageFile on Drive C was 1.5GB and 1.5+2.5 does not equal 5.5!

Any ideas about what's happening??

Thanks!!

I am using a virtual IP to provide access to a mysql cluster. However since I don't have unlimited hardware I am unable to put the mysql servers as the sole application on each system. I end up with both an instance of apache and mysql on each system. I've configured the network with LVS and ldirector for load balancing. I've assigned a virtual IP to the system, say 192.168.1.107, I make that the primary IP to eth0 on the load balancer and as a loopback interface on the two machines (sql1 and sql2) running the mysql servers.

If I make a request from any server that is not sql1 or sql2, everything works fine, but when I am making a request from either of those machines it will not send to the load balancer, instead it picks up the loopback and just uses the local server.

Does anyone have any ideas for how to over come this? I'm kind of new to VIP's and anything more advanced than a static/dynamic ip address. I believe my setup is using direct routing.

Thanks!

Hi

I am desperate to resolve this issue, as I have been getting this 0x800ccc0e error from Outlook on my laptop, regarding failure to connect to my virtual server (apache tomcat running windows server 2008)

I tried to connect to my email via Webmail on Plesk, and received a failed login. The same for all accounts.

The problem arose when just minutes after sending through an email okay, I tried a follow up email to the same person and received this 0x800ccc0e error message.

I check on the server and noted that Mailenable Professional was not running IMAP properly, as I have exceed my trial period, so I spoke to them and installed Mailenable Enterprise on over the top to keep the trial running.

It kept the same settings, and IMAP and all the other services on the same accounts worked.

Having gone back to Outlook on my laptop, and tried to send. I got the same error.

Since then, I have disabled all anti-virus (KASPERSKY PURE / SPY WARE DOCTOR / MALWARE) on my laptop and server (SYMANTEC END POINT), disabling the firewalls to no avail.

I tried setting up an account with POP as opposed to IMAP, and test fails. I have also verified the account details to be the same, as had worked previously for a long time.

I've tinkered with some port changes via other forums, and its not worked either. Plus did a run of registry cleaners on both systems, as well as resetting machines etc.

Tel net command prompts actions do not work or bring up anything.

In addition to the my previous email, a colleague of mine tried to log in externally via webmail, and got a login failed.

The would point to a failure on the server side, as Webmail is external to Outlook.

Please help, anyone!!!

Anyone know if it possible to use windows vista os then use virtual server to run dedicated executables *.exe or *.bat, *.com using high dynamic lighting and postprocessing, including OpenGL database and DirectX 10. Also using realtime effects and no slowdowns just as using a dedicated server operating system like windows server 2003, 2008 or linux server. Is there also hyper-V intergrated into virtual server or just windows server 2008.

Can I setup a Virtual Dedicated Server with an ISP that simulates what it is like to login to my home computer through logmein or vnc? I would never physically see the hardware because it would be physically at the ISP. In other words, I want to be on the road, fire up LogMeIn, connect to this computer (that I never physically see), and work in Windows XP, or possibly a different operating system.

Is a Virtual Dedicated Server overkill for what I want? If so, how else could I do this, without having to take care of the physical computer?

Thanks

A:Virtual Dedicated Server Used As Regular Xp Computer?

Hi there Mirabella, welcome to BC! Let me go over what I think you're asking, so that we're all on the same page.Your ISP has a computer at their office, we'll call it the host computer. This computer has been assigned for your personal use.You either have a laptop or plan on using public computers. We'll call these computers the client computer. What you want to do is set up a system wherein you're out on the road, having a good time, miles, or continents, away from your ISP's office and the Host Computer. You haul out your client computer, log onto the internet, and (through methods to be determined) are able to log on to the host computer and interact with it as though it were right in front of you (i.e. a desktop, start menu, programs, etc. all running on the host computer but shown on the client computer).Am I warm?If I am, then I think you may be indeed skirting the shoals of overkill. There are very many programs and systems that will allow you to use a computer remotely. Many of them even let you see and use the remote computer's desktop and interface.Windows XP Professional has a built-in program called Remote Assistance. It was designed to allow a technician to fix your computer remotely. The major drawback is that there needs to be someone sitting at the remote computer to click the "OK" buttons to allow access. So that's out.Another program is called GoToMyPC. I've never used it personally, so I'm not sure how g... Read more

Hello,

And, Thanks for your time and advise!

Is there a way that either a W95 or W98SE (both fully upgraded) can be configured as a SERVER for the Virtual Private Network when connected direct to the Internet via a Cable Modem (no modem exists)?

I see that either W95 or W98 with a modem can be configured for a dial in as a SERVER with the upgrades of DUN.

Or, will this require a special application designed to act as the VPN SERVER?
THANKS,

Jerry

Host OS: Windows 2003 Server running on domain under Active Directory
Guest Virtual Machine OS: Same

The Host Machine and Host OS operate as expected, and can interact with everything in the entire network, including

Other w2k3 servers
Domain Controllers
XP PCs
Linux servers
Linux PCs
However, the Virtual Machine was created using - and runs within - MS Virtual Machine 2005. The VM thinks it's a stand-alone server. It doesn't "see"

the HP 373i gigabit Network Interface Cards (NICs)
anything else in the network
the proxy server/internet gateway
anything on the host's hard drive
The VM DOES see

a non-existent NIC (a generic Intel adapter)
the host machine' s CD-ROM
As an aside, I have the same problem with a PC
Host OS: XP SP2
Guest Virtual Machine OS: Ubuntu Linux 7.10
That VM doesn't "see" the NIC, and lives in its own dark cave.

In each case, the VMs see all the other hardware - except the NICs and hard drives not internal to the VM.

How do I get the VM to acknowledge the NICs so that I can install the NIC drivers and open the VM's eyes to the rest of the Domain?

A:Solved: server 2003 - virtual machine - NIC

That 'non-existent' NIC is a 'virtual' one running as a Device on the Virtual Machine.
I'm using Virtual PC 2003 but I think yours is similar.
Try setting the 1st virtual NIC to use each option in the drop-down list in the Settings window.
I think NAT will work but I'm not sure, I only have a small home network so am not familiar with your situation.

Hi

We have IIS installed for SMTP email service on our windows server 2008 R2 SP1. I am unable to start the [SMTP Virtual Server #1], i get an error message

"The service has returned a service specific error code. Check the Windows Event Viewer for details"

When i checked the Event Viewer logs and i found the below error

"The service could not bind instance 1. The data is the error code."

When i googled about this error i found that the port 25 is being used by another application which is why my SMTP Virtaul server #1 doesn't start.

I did Telnet localhost 25 and i see the port is being used by hotmail. The below message when i did telnet

220 BLU436-SMTP198.smtp.hotmail.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 8.0.9
200.16384 ready at Tue, 21 Jul 2015 07:07:01 -0700
How do i disbale the smtp.hotmail to use the port 25 so that my SMTP Virtual server #1 can use port 25. Please help.

Thanks

A:Solved: SMTP Virtual server wont start

Hi

I figured out that SMTP Proxy service was using port 25 which was not allowing my SMTP Virtual Server #1 to start. I stopped the SMTP Proxy from services and my SMTP Virtaul server#1 in my IIS started working.

Excuted the command netstat --noa in commane line tool to check the PID of the application that is using the port 25.

From the TaskManager/ Services Tab i was able to figure out the application using the PID Coulmn. Stopping the SMTP Proxy i was able to turn on the SMTP in my IIS Server.

Thanks
Arun

I have three computers, one hardwired to ATT U-Verse and two wireless. All run Windows 7. I have five hosting companies with numerous websites on each, two are Virtural Private Servers.

Until today I was able to access all servers whether shared or VPS but for some reason one of the VPS servers I am unable to view any of the domains hosted there.

I can receive email from those domains. I can connect to the server via ftp.

Employees in other areas with ATT U-Verse or Comcast are able to see the domains. I can view the domains using 4G wireless tablets or cell phones. I cannot view the domains on any of the three computers using any browser including firefox, chrome or IE. I get a timeout on tracert nameserver.com after it hits my IP address.

I confirmed the domains are active with the VPS host. I also confirmed with ATT that there wasn't a line issue and powered down and reset the router several times.

I still cannot access any of the domains and the only other commonality I know of was that before doing anything this morning, I ran CCleaner on all three computers. I have imported the deleted registry files in case there was something deleted that shouldn't have been but that is the only thing different from yesterday and prior.

At my wits end with this, no idea what else to try. Any suggestions appreciated.
