Desktop Icons Deleted, But Won't Disappear

Q: Desktop Icons Deleted, But Won't Disappear

I deleted some files off my desktop. The data was deleted, but the icons are still there. They now contain "0 bytes". I've tried deleting them, and I get an error message saying that the file cannot be found. I've tried refreshing my desktop. I've tried restarting. I've tried deleting in safe mode. I can't rename them, and I can't move them, because they "can't be found."

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You could try CCleaner. It has settings for removing dead start menu and desktop shortcuts. It's a freebie and very good to have anyway.

On Windows XP, for one specific login name, when double clicking on most icons, all of the icons on the desktop disappear for about 2 seconds, then come back, but the associated program/task does not appear. Also going through the Start Menu, these tasks do not appear.

Second problem: very frequently, system will shutdown. The window says "System is shutting down, initiated by NT Authority\system. Message:Windows must now restaart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service terminated unexpectedly" It will give a 60 second countdown to allow saving of current application.

Have you tried doing your scans in "Safe Mode"? Have you performed any Online Virus Scans? If not, then start there first. If rescanning in Safe Modes does not help, then do this:Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. DO NOT use yet. Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware FreeDouble-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation. An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program. If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)Under the "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences... button.Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):Close browsers before scanning.Scan for tracking cookies.Terminate memory threats before quarantining.Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.Do not run a scan just yet.Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. Hello,

I have a new Asus G50V with vista 64 premium. At least 5 times a day, my desktop icons disappear. Most, but not all, of them are shortcuts. It happens at random times, so I'm not sure what the trigger is. I've read similar threads, but they've left me confused about what to try. When I right click and check "view," "show desktop icons" is always checked. If I then click on it and repeat the process, I can get the icons back. But it concerns me. Is something malicious -- or just quirky -- happening? How can I fix it?

Thanks, in advance, for help.

do a system scan with a spyware, adware, malware program. you might have something in there doing it. also do a full system virus scan. might just be an issue your version of vista, or something not installed correctly.

also make sure all your drivers are up to date.

The icons and Taskbar on my desktop keep disappearing. The wallpaper stays. If I am fast enough I can access programs or files for the short time it is up. Otherwise I have to access everything through task manager. I have run AVG but that did not find anything. I cannot access Adaware to see what it can find. Also the same thing happens when I try to start in Safe Mode. I have tried to reset to previous configuration but that did not work either. I am somewhat of a computer doofus so I am not sure how to proceed. Please Help

A:Desktop Icons and taskbar disappear

Since you can get to task manager try this.

Start up the Windows XP Task Manager and select the Applications tab.

Now select the New Task button at the bottom of the window. A new smaller window will appear. In it simply type:

explorer.exe

explorer.exe is the Windows Program Manager (or Windows Explorer.) It manages the Windows Graphical Shell including the Start menu, taskbar, desktop, and File Manager. By restarting this process the graphical interface for Windows will reappear.

I have been having this issue for months now. On a Windows XP system, whenever I right click on a MS Windows Excel, Word and most shortcuts, all of my icons disappear for a few seconds and then reappear. I never get the right click menu that I expect.
I've run virus and spyware software and the problem persists. I am sure it's related to registers, but I honestly don't know much about it or what to look for. I downloaded the ShellMenuView tool but cannot figure out what I am looking for.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I have screenies of the desktop at http://www.mediafire.com/mynaras-glitch so you can see what I mean. Mousing over the icons will occasionally make them transparent, or make them show again, whenever I roll over them with my mouse. In the first picture I "wiped" away that line of icons. In the second I wiped away the icons pinned to my taskbar. The third I wiped away everything. This doesn't affect much but it is very annoying, especially when trying to launch a program from the taskbar without being able to see it or looking at the tray for program notices. Thanks in advance for the help!

Okay, so I recently removed some trojans using the program Spyware Doctor. Upon reboot and logging in, the taskbar and desktop icons appear, then disappear, then appear again several times before just remaining gone.

When I bring up the Processes under the Task Manager while this is going on, explorer.exe disappears and appears like the taskbar and desktop icons.

Now, thinking maybe my shell is screwed up, i went to the registry key [HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell] and made sure the shell path was "explorer.exe." It was, and nothing changed.

I have Windows XP.

I noticed this last night.as you can see, show desktop icons is set however they arent there...Here's the basic rundown.. I installed Adobe 9, (with its addon adobe air) but i prevented adobe air from completely installing, by simply denying the changed from my firewall. The Adobe donwload manager was still on the desktop, and I wanted it gone, so i erased it with DoD style 7 pass wipe. (after trying to drag it to the recycle bin, only to have explorer crash and restart with it still on the desktop.)Anyway, I found out that Adobe Air did in fact partially install, and I removed it from the programs and features area. How do I make it so my desktop icons don't disappear? and why is adobe like this? what is their problem?

Hi sbrigham01!

Did you run SFC (System File Checker)? There might be some system files that need to be set to the originals.

SFX.EXE is started from the [Start] >> Run command prompt. You might need your install disk (not a Recovery disk!), or need to know where your OS's setup files are stored on your hard disk.

At that point I can right click the desktop and check to see if the "show desktop icons" box is checked (it is). Once I am left with a blank desktop the only way out is to crash the computer, ctrl/alt/delete does not work. this is strange because not all of the icons disappear, the main ones stay but my some of my games shortcuts go?

A:Desktop icons disappear if i leave my pc on while away

Hi Mark,

When you say the "shortcuts go", do you mean temporarily until your monitor awakens, and then they appear again?

Can you try this:

1. Click the Start Orb, type power into the box.
2. Find and select the option called Change power-saving settings
3. Refer to the attached image - this is what you should see.

Play around with some of the options (see the ones I annotated) to prevent your monitor turning off.

Post back here if you need more help.

after a few hours they disappear again... also I can customise the desktop to have a picture or even a plain background like bright yellow.. but it will reset the background when it removes the icons

I thought this was a stupid windows vista issue so installed the win7 upgrade. and the problem has continued

Greetings Jener1 and Welcome to the Malware removal forum.Your Firefox profile does seem to indicate a problem. The file, npmnqmp071101000055.dll, is seen as cloaked malware...I have doubts that it's all that serious as it seems, that particular file comes along with your installation of the "Coupon Printer for Windows". I see that in your "attach.txt" log as well, and that indicates to me that you should be able to uninstall it successfully. Please look for it in your "Programs and features" listing from the control panel and uninstall it.There is however, evidence in the dds log that the system is waiting for a reboot since your last scan with mbam. So, before you carry on with any of the instructions below, please reboot that computer. You have two items listed in your trusted zone...and should have nothing in the trusted zone unless it's another system (or file from another system) which is on a network that you setup. You should remove anything from the trusted zone that you know with certainty, is not on a protected system under your control. The "Trusted Zone" is really something more suited for the corporate environment...or of course, as mentioned, a home network which you as admin, have setup and maintain control of. Otherwise, anything you place in the trusted zone is likened unto one who goes away on vacation, having left the front door keys in the lock. If you agree that is a bad idea, then please, by all means, remo... Read more

My pc was working fine until this started.I have tried Malaware, Superantispyware etc. Thought note sure if there are "dodgies" or something to do with pc or XP itself? Thanks in advance

Hi there,
So ya, im having this problem on windows 7 that only relates to mozilla apps.....hmmmmm....fishy.
Firefox and thunderbird icons disappear when renamed...

When renamed, the spot where the icon was goes blank, and there is no longer anything there to click.
It does not go to the recycle bin....it just vanishes.....

The only way to get them back is to use CTRL+Z to undo the command.

Ive tried every other icon on my desktop and none of them do it except for mozilla apps...

Any ideas?
Anyone else have this issue, or can replicate it?

Thanks for reading....this has been driving me nuts for 2 hours now... BAAAH !

Hi,

When I exit windows explorer, I get the following message:

And after that, sometimes I lose the task bar and the desktop icons.
I have not been able to characterize this better - i.e exactly when or after exiting win explorer how many times does the task bar disappear.

The only consistent part is that I get the above error message.

I have read through this thread:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/task-bar-and-desktop-icons-disappear-180407.html

So far I have done these things:

1. Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Windows Task Manager -> File -> New Task(Run) -> explorer.exe

This only starts a new explorer window. It does not restore icons or task bar.

2. SFC /SCANNOW
This did not show any corrupted files or any error messages.

3. There were no restore points that I could go back to. :(

4. I have run anti-virus (AVG, Avira, Kaspersky online), and anti-spyware (Spyware S&D, PC Tools Spyware Doctor), but they have not come up with anything.

I was thinking of using the Windows CD and choosing the 'repair' option next, but was hesitating in case I will loose any patches I have applied.

I would appreciate any suggestions for troubleshooting this.

Thank you.

You may have to kill any process named explorer in the processes tab first. If there's already an explorer process, starting it will only open a new windows explorer window.

Another thing you should check is the event viewer. Go to control panel (classic view), administrative tools, event viewer. Look in the application log, and look for any event that indicates an explorer crash. Double click it, and look at the report; sometimes it may indicate the module that causes the crash (for example a .dll). If it's a known program you recently installed you could uninstall it, or at least disable any explorer extensions that are part of it.

Hi, I'm new here.

I have just purchased a new Asus M51VR notebook with Vista Home Premium SP1 pre-installed & all Windows updates downloaded. All working well so far (my first experience with Vista) except whenever I restart Windows my desktop icons appear briefly then disappear. This only happens with my desktop icons - my taskbar & gadgets are all visible. I can right-click on my desktop & in the "view" sub-menu I uncheck then check "Show desktop icons" & my icons re-appear - until I restart Windows again & they disappear again. I have tried another method by closing the "explorer.exe" process in task manager, then opening the DOS window & deleting the "iconcache.db" file in "C:\Users\****\AppData\Local" folder, then restarting explorer (re-building the "iconcache.db" file) & my icons re-appear - until I restart Windows . The only other way I can access my "invisible" desktop icons is by enabling the desktop toolbar on the taskbar, but this will not do. I have also installed, updated & run latest versions of Spybot & SUPERAntiSpyware with nil results. I have downloaded HijackThis but have not run it yet, as I am not that confident enough with Windows processes.

I believe another process may be interfering on startup, by the manner in which the icons appear briefly then disappear as all the startup processes load? Or is it a simple Vista glitch ... Read more

Hi brodes

I also recently got an ASUS M51V Series notebook with Window Vista pre-installed. I have been going round the bend trying to solve this - so thanks for the updated post - your solution worked prefectly . I hadn't changed the power settings (but my 5 yr old was playing on it - so I'm guessing he somehow changed it). I'm also guessing (I don't know much about the technical side of computing) that the other setting must stop all "unnecessary" power usage, and that may be why the icons disappear.

I will keep pursuing getting mbam or something to work, but here are my details of last 2 hours of work, and searching Google and here. (Less than 4 char search is annoying).
Following rules:
Already a member here.
2. Managed to run cleanmgr cli. Please note there is something like 7 seconds desktop is available. Before catching enough time to run cleanmgr, I was able to do this in a term window:
C:\temp: DIR shows file not found. RD says dir not empty. OK. left that.
c:/windows/temp lots of files did *.* and RD. ok.
After that I ran cleanmgr, not compress files, clean everything. It seemed to do so.
3. Safe mode still has come and go desktop, so unable to get into my computer long enough to get mbam off a usb key.
FYI This is a laptop running XP home with a SATA drive. At worst I'll remove drive and plug it in a desktop.
I have a computer online listening for email, a couple others for burning cd, usb d/l etc.

So now I await your advice here. In meantime I may try to pursue the problem. Possibly loading my Linux live cd, trinity rescue etc, but if responded to here, will let you take over.
My email is live and awaiting a response.
Thanks in advance.

About one week back I installed Skype application and also the driver for Frontech web cam. Since then I find that my laptop not working properly. First of all during booting its asks for selecting a booting option, although there is only one OS i.e. Windows 7. First time i asked to choose such option.

After i press enter, the system starts. But the desktop items are not stable, its blinking or remain disappeared. On right click, they appears but disappears on left click.

When I open the Mozilla Firefox browser, it is not stable rather refreshing itself repeatedly very fist. whenever i trying to write anything in search engine, it is reseted to blank.

Office 2007 also not working . Nothing I can write there.

Windows notepad also not working . Nothing i can write in it. The date and time are appending repeatedly infinitely.

The Skype working without any problem.

Any PPT when opened, switched to Slide show mode automatically.

I tried system restore option and restore to a 6 month earlier point but still the problem persists.

Please Help.

I need lots of help. Let me start with I'm running Windows XP sp2 maybe 3. This winter I had the google redirect and ( I don't remember the exact name)a pop up wanting money to get rid of a virus. By finding this forum and reading similiar issues I was able to regain control for the most part.It would not let me install AVG but everything else seemed to work so along I went. Last night the redirect issue started. I still had RKILL on my desktop so I tried that(not sure if this needs to be updated). It seemed to work. This morning I think it was called Windows Analyzer popped up and started a scan. I tried the RKILL again and this time the bottom bar where the the windows go and clock is (not sure if that is task bar) diappeared. I restarted and tried RKILL again. Now all my desktop icons started to disappear. I need help and I'm not too knowledgable on this stuff. I didn't think just searching and applying someone elses solutions was going to take care of it this time.

I know I definitely have multiple problems working this time. Thanks ahead of time for any help you can provide!

Hi Guys,

Have a real strange issue here...

I have an Asus X55A Laptop running windows 8 and my keyboard suddenly went crazy! It started adding random characters when typing or added spaces between each letter!

I was able to try a restart using ALT+F4 but it would then not let me type anything into my password box. I wasnt able to cursor over the on-screen keyboard function.

I eventually got logged on by using a USB keyboard and Mouse which work fine. Still getting spaces between letters when I type.

Even stranger...when I click on ANY desktop item it will simply vanish! I used msconfig to get a safe mode with networking boot. When I click on an icon then a dialog box saying 'Item Not Found' and then something about file transfer - try again or cancel. If I select cancel the icon will vanish.

Even selecting items in folders will disappear.

I am assuming this a virus and any help at all will be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
ndonaldson2912

My computer is a Windows PC running XP Home.

Two nights ago I was browsing w/Firefox when I got two separate alerts (seemingly) from my AVG antivirus program. I clicked "heal" each time, then I got a prompt that the computer had a hard drive failure and should be restarted It took a long time to restart and that is when the weirdness started.

First, my desktop was gone. Second, my task manager would not open. Third, my System Restore was locked -- the only set point was the reboot I had just done.

I unplugged the ethernet cable from the computer.

I used another computer to find instructions on how to restore Task Manager via regedit (and this worked).

I found some new programs running in Task Manager: PJudowMnnh.exe; Fabd40.dll; and Ujr.exe.

Adaware seemed to clean these up, additionally it said it had cleared the system of a malware called Ulisa.

3 AVG scans since then were clean.

Problems:

1) I still cannot see any of the icons on my desktop. I cannot save anything to my desktop (at least, that I am able to see). Right-click on the desktop does nothing. Running c:\Windows\explorer.exe will not bring the desktop back (all it does is open My Documents. I can still find programs to run via Start ---> Search.

2) The ONLY restore point in System Restore is the reboot I did immediately after the infect. I definitely DON'T want that restore point.

3) I am not confident all the bugs are gone.

Can you help? (Keep in mind that I don't seem ... Read more

About 4 months ago my computer started starting up and only showing my background. It didn’t the taskbar or any of my desktop icons. This only happened every once and a while so I just ignored it for the most part. I could get the taskbar and icons back sometimes by starting up a program using the task manager, logging off and logging back on using the task manager, or just shutting down my computer by holding in the power button for a few seconds. The power button was the only way that worked all the time to get my desktop back to normal. Also the task manager wouldn’t work at shutting down the computer by command so holding in the power button was the only way to restart it when it does this. Starting about a week ago I cannot access my mp3 player all of a sudden. My mp3 player does connect, it shows the USB icon on task bar and mp3 player screen lights up to show it’s connected. Whenever I go into my computer the drive that the mp3 player is suppose to be doesn’t show up and when I type in the address it gives a pop-up saying the drive is inaccessible. I’ve had my mp3 player for 2-3 years and have connected it regularly in the past and have never had this type of problem. Also I have managed to connect it to my mother’s computer without any problems just today so it proves it isn’t my mp3 player that’s causing the problem. 2 days ago I got some sort of error while trying to load a website, I don’t recall the exact message and ha...
