Disabled Display Driver, cant see anything

Q: Disabled Display Driver, cant see anything

Ok, i in pretty deep s*^t!!

My computer specification is Vista Business, Graphics - NVidia GeForce Go 7400, 2.5GB RAM, 1.6MHz...

I was having some problem with my graphics card, and my display. So, I just disabled my display driver. Yes, it was very stupid...

So, what is happening now is, I can't see anything....nothing. I can't see the Boot menu, the BIOS menu, nothing. I can hear sounds, like the vista opening music, it asks for my password(I cant see it)

after i blindly type my password, u can hear the music showing that it has turned on....so basically everything is there, i just cant see anything.

I am able to perform, some basic tasks, like shut down, restart etc. which I know how to do through my keyboard. I need help in Enabling my Display Driver....

Please Help.....

How do I do that, when I cant see anything? Any cmd command?

Preferred Solution: Disabled Display Driver, cant see anything

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I read a tutorial on navigating through start-up and login when theres no screen. I'm sure it was in this help forum. I'll get back to you when I remember where I read it. In the mean time, search the tutorials here. You you may find your answer.

Oh, and have you tried to boot in safe mode? It boots with much lower resolution, so you may be able to reinstall the display driver that way...if that is in fact the issue. Just a thought.

Recently I've got a new laptop it's a hp pavillion g6 it has a smashed screen but we use hdmi. A couple of days ago I was mucking around In the display drivers and accidentley disabled my display driver now all I see is a black screen and hdmi doesn't work and neither does a vga cable. Any tips on what I can do its a hp pavillion g6 thanks

A:Accidentally disabled my display driver

This is critical issue.

First, since the laptop is new, your laptop would be covered in warranty. Just visit the nearest authorized hp service center and get it fixed or get a replacement. You can get the list of authorized hp service center from hp.com for your location. If you have accidental coverage of warranty, then not to worry about the smashed screen at all.

If you are out of warranty, visit a technician/service center. Charges apply.

To fix the HDMI / VGA - display driver issue, you need to try these workarounds.

You just had to do a hard boot and it'll boot in Safe mode. Then go to Device Manager and enabled the driver again.
Try doing a power cycle.
Remove ac adapter and then remove battery.

Now, press and hold power button for 90 seconds to release the charge in the capacitors
Replace power sources[Put the battery and Connect Ac Adapter].

Then Reboot.

If both the options didn't work, visit a technician/service center. Charges may apply.

You're gonna love this one. Lots of quirks along the way.

So, get a laptop from my mom. It was her old one. It had been wiped clean. It came preloaded with Vista, she put XP on it and got frustrated and gave it to me.

All the drivers worked great except the graphics driver. From searching, it appears to be an NVidia Go7 series. (Believe 7200.)

I tried the full install from NVidia and the short driver install from HP (the only one for this laptop) no luck. Keeps telling me no drivers are recognized.

In my hissy fit, I turned off the vgasafe in properties>Settings>Advanced>Monitor.

Okay, no graphics at all. Runs great still. I use narrator and go into the same settings, but as I go through, I hear my monkey man speak out that the resolution is 96x96x96 with no options. I continue to advanced, where there's... nothing. The advanced button no longer works. So I head to the run command and bring up the Device Manager to enable that way. Display Adapter is gone completely. I even did a walkthrough to enable from the display Device Manager.

I try all the boot modes, my BIOS has no area for graphics settings. Safe with/out command sticks at mup.sys. The other modes leave me black screened.

I go back in, try to install basic and NVidia drivers from a CDRom, with Narrator's help again. Still says no hardware for NVidia found and the other kept erroring out.

Here's the quirks:
I have no Win CD. I just got it, Ma tra... Read more

Good day all I have installed Windows 10 Pro 64-bit on an old Lenovo G550. It used to work well on Windows 7, but now I cannot install or update the display drivers in order to connect an external display (LG 49" TV) at 1920 x 1080. Windows installed its own useless drivers that obtains at least 1366 x 768 on both the laptop and the TV when displays are duplicated. Then the highest I can go is 1366 x 768. When I select "Show only on 2" (which is essentially what I want to do), it goes down to an even worse display resolution, but this also disables the Resolution drop-down.  I have downloaded every version of drivers know to God and man from Lenovo's and other sites, but all of them tells me: "This computer does not meet the minimum requirement for installing software." I have deleted the driver and reinstalled via "Scan for hardward changes" as well. I have done a Windows update as well. I have no idea what to do next. How do I fix this stupid problem? Please help me. Thank you in advance.Kind regardsRenier

I'm using a Windows XP with Google Chrome as my browser
The problem started when I was trying to get to Youtube. I clicked the link and a fatal error occurred. Something about a redirect loop. One of the possible solutions google gave me was to clear all cookies and so I did. But then when I did that and went to my desktop, my wallpaper was gone and it said "Active Desktop Recovery" "Active desktop has been turned off" etc. I ran ATF Cleaner and Super-Anti-Spyware free edition in safe mode and thought the problem was solved. Anti-Spyware found something called "Hijacker.Tubby" and "Hijacker.Deskbar" It quarantined them and I thought it was done. But my Active desktop was still disabled and the driver for my wacom tablet isn't running.
I need this solved as quick as possible because this problem is setting me back on several assignments for my art class. I can't just start over on a piece of paper; too much time was put into the work that's already been done.

Heyy everyone,

This is my first post on this forum, and it has taken me a while to post this thread since I have been trying to research and figure out my own problem myself by searching many, MANY, other related forums but so far have had not much luck. Also, obviously I couldn't find an individual who had the exact same specs as my computer who had the same issues, so I am going try and get help through this thread specifically for my computer. First I will explain everything that is going or happened and then all the specs are at the end of the thread.

Recently I downloaded a trial of World of Warcraft just to start playing it again for a little bit. I played it for about two days and then after playing it for about an hour or two straight, all of a sudden, the video card craps out, screen flashes, goes black, and then comes back within seconds. Then a message error pops stating 'Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered.'.

Within those two days I was playing though, I was doing a lot of updates on my computer since I reformatted my laptop recently. So I thought maybe it had to do with the updates and decided to do a system restore. Of course with my luck, the system restore failed, and failed a couple more times after trying again but at different restoration points/dates. So then I decided so continue with my updates since I still had to install services pack 1, more updates, service pack 2, and more updates.

Was given a little IBM 8183 Thinkcentre complete with screen, running XP.

The desktop was empty and "show desktop icons" was ticked.

Any icon on the start menu, ie control panel, etc., when clicked, just jumped to the taskbar and did not start the programme.

When the icon on the taskbar was clicked, it seem to dissapear off the left hand side of the screen. I took a look at the display properties and I there was a selection of Intel graphics or Radeon graphics.

I clicked on the disable display icon and now I have lost the lot. A total black screen. No response to anything. I though to remove the graphic card but it appears to be welded in place.

Also trying to start in Safe mode or boot on bootable disk is impossible because the screen always remains black.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello folks,

I seem to be having multiple problems all at the same time (all of which may or may not be related) but let me start from the beginning.

This all started when I tried to connect my Inspiron 1720 laptop to our television. For some reason my laptop froze, the image on both my computer and TV had white lines across it, and so I turned off my system since it was locked up.

I restarted and began having display problems - first windows were not opening in the desktop area. They would open in the system tray, but were "unreachable" by the mouse. I played with display settings and got the screen to fit...but now seem to have 2 primary problems:

Whenever I play games, view pictures, or Windows Media Player, I see strange "plaid boxes." However, the desktop is fine and everything else appears to work fine. I contacted NVIDIA and I have installed different driver versions, as well as the OEM (Dell's) driver's - all did not work - I still saw the distorted images when playing games, viewing pictures, and videos.

I have also completed System Restore's to points prior to when I was having the problem - unfortunately that did not work.

Here are screenshots of what I am seeing:

This problem may stem from the original TV incident. When I click on Displa... Read more

The first set of pictures that you put up look like classics examples of bad video RAM. In a desktop PC I would tell you to swap out the video card with a differnt one to verify that is the issue since in a few cases bad drivers can cause the issue but it's highly unlikely. Professional service by a local non big box computer shop is your best bet at this point.

I have an HP dc7900 at work and the system keeps getting the error "Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered". First the user is not playing game and I have updated the video drivers. I also ran DXDIAG.exe and I have looked at the report and I don't see anything abnormal.

Does anyone have any ideas on why this error Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered keeps occurring ??

Try uninstalling the current driver completely and re-install the driver from the HP Support site.

Perform the following steps:
-Download Trexxy Driver Fusion from Driver Fusion - The Complete Driver Solution and install it. Don't run the program yet
- First, Uninstall the Intel Graphics driver/software from Control Panel > Uninstall a program and restart
-Now run Driver Fusion, select Intel Display and then select Delete
-After complete restart the PC then install the latest release of the Graphics driver from the HP Support site.

A spyware attack caused my desktop to display a blue screen with the SPYWARE INFECTED splashed on it. After using a third-party software to remove all the threats, the themes and the background (wallpaper) are no longer enabled. The themes will accept your choice but will default to a plain desktop screen. Meanwhile, the backgrounds are no longer clickable so there is no way to change the background. Are you certain all the malware has been removed?

Please download HijackThis http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/HijackThis.exe - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Hello everyone,
I'm having a bit of a problem with XP and am hoping you guys can help me out. I've searched around the forum as requested for a similar thread but can't find one. Basically, the ability to change some parts of my display have been disabled and aren't visible.

On Display Properties the Themes tab isn't available, nor is the Appearance tab. I have service pack 2 and apart from this problem it is in full working order.

So far I've tried restarting Themes in Run>Services.msc, as well as changing the Startup type to Automatic.

I've also tried to download and replace the uxtheme.dll file in the system32 folder with a patch promising to let me run 3rd party themes, however without any use of Themes at all it has been ineffectual!

Hi all this is my first post since joining so I?m hoping I might be able to get some good advice to help me?

My problem: I was working with the video card and then disabled it. I disabled by going to:

"Control panel","display", "settings", "advanced", "adapter" "properties" "device usage" : selected disable device... windows now works but I have no display ? only a black screen.

A member known as ?Spike? kindly described the keystrokes to find your way to device manager and subsequently to the display adapter to enable it. Unfortunately after completing these steps I still have a black screen, I noted that after completing the steps my computer never re-booted itself; I have to manually restart.
I also searched and found a posting from ?glowingnissan07? whom noted that this method also did not work in their case. They explained that a ?Microsoft Question box? sounded on some attempts but on other attempts there was no sound ? could this be that the sound appears when you click disable? and when you select enable no sound comes on?? If so I may be correctly selecting to ?enable? the display adapter but this won?t solve my problem.

I have tried several things including:

I am running Internet Explorer v6 on Windows XP. Whenever I try to browse to any search engine page, I get a Page cannot be displayed error. For instance, I can go to msn.com or yahoo.com, but if I try to use the search engines on those sites, I get the error. If I go directly to bing, google, etc, I get the error message.

I had seen a suggestion in another post to go to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc and open the hosts file. Then delete out any lines that don't begin with I attempted to do this, but was unable to save/modify that file (I was not able to uncheck the "Read Only" property) and thus could not try that suggestion.

Any steps on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated! I have a feeling there may be other viruses/trojans at work, but I'll start with fixing this one.

Hi and welcome to TSF

First off please do not your question to a topic that someone else has started. I deleted your other two.

If you think you are infected:

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum, not here.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

Couple of my desktop shortcuts stopped working too and it's very difficult to get into those programs even running the executables right from the source folder. Had some other irritating worm problems on my previous computer and now I've got a few on my new Dell. I had that 'load.exe' worm thing and it took me a lot of searching before I was able to cure that one. Isn't there a quick way to 'reset' standard XP settings somehow?

Now I know this has been covered alot, all over the place, but none of the solutions have seemed to solve my problem, I looked at a lot of other posts and I finally decided to make my own. Also I would like to know if there are any processes that are slowing down my compy, cause it should run faster than it does. Heres my log:

A:Display driver Intel Graphics Accelerator Driver Vista(R) stopped responding.

I tried installing drivers but it failed to install and I proceeded with restarting anyway. Actually I  was goggling my problem and came here because someone had similar issue and was solved. I figured if he got it solved, why not try this website.

Upon recieving my X1 Yoga OLED, I had an issue where every time I woke the computer from sleep or switched to tablet mode, the display would flicker black a few times and the computer would sometimes restart. I'd get a critical event, kernel event 117. A little research led me to update the display driver. It was already up to date, but reinstalling the Intel display driver fixed the issue. Soon after, I noticed that changing thecolor settings made no change to the display. I knew it worked prior to reinstalling the display driver. As advised in another thread here, I reinstalled the system interface foundation driver (again, was originally up to date), and this fixed the color settings issue. However, the original issue came back! I'd obviously rather have the display working properly, so I again reinstalled the display drivers. Sure enough, the color setting issue is back. Seems like these two drivers aren't playing well together. Any ideas on how to get around this? Thanks.

I am not sure if this is where it belongs, or if it is a Graphics Card issue. I have an Acer Aspire 7741z-4433 with an Intel(R) Pentium(R) p6200 (2.13 GHz, 3MB 1.3 cache). This only happens to me while I am playing The Sims 3. I have the game set on the lowest quality settings, even though my laptop "claims" to be HD LED, etc. This issue still happens. As you may know I cannot replace the graphics card as it is apart of the motherboard, and to buy a new motherboard with a better graphics card would cost more than a new computer. I have been the my manufacture's website and tried installing an update of the graphics card, and that didn't do the trick either. I am at my wits end, and I just want to play the game without it shutting down and freezing my computer. The reason I know the error is because I do Alt + Tab to get back to the desktop. The way it acts up while I am in game is the screen blacks out but I can still see the software's mouse, and then it blinks a couple times and then freezes completely, causing me to do a hard shut down. What can I do to resolve this issue?

Hi, I am using a HP Pavilion Notebook 17-f001nl (ENERGY STAR) -  Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4510U CPU @ 2.00GHz - Intel(R) HD Graphics Family (driver version and NVIDIA GeForce 840M (driver version 376.09). Since August 2016 I have been experiencing the 'Display Driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, version ... stopped working and has been restored' error everytime I start a game from the Steam library. This is often followed by a blue screen and my laptop restarting. The blue screen errors are often associated with 'kernel mode errors' and 'video tdr failure'.I managed to send my laptop to the HP support centre in August, when it was still covered by the warranty. The laptop came back with a new NVIDIA GeForce 840M, but the problems persisted. I have tried pretty much every solution that I managed to find online, without any real success, including: -Clean install almost every NVIDIA driver available for my graphic card and my OS-update the driver of the Intel HD Graphics card-install or hide the NVIDIA graphic adapter WDDM-overclock/underclock-something regarding increasing the time that the graphic card 'waits' for a program to respond, changing it from 2 seconds to 8 seconds I think (cannot recall what the exact process was now)-changing the settings on the NVIDIA Control Panel (e.g. forcing programs to be run by the NVIDIA card, changing the setting of individual games to be run at maximal performance, etc.)-changing settings through... I was working with an audio recording software just now when I faced this error (in the subject line). The screen blacked for 10 seconds or so and then came back.

Also, I faced similar errors when I was using Power Point and a screen recorder software but the error was a bit different nvlkdm has stopped working. Also, I had just installed IE 9 beta (hardware acceleration), opened the first site and the system crashed and I had to do a hard reboot and unistall IE 9 to save my life from such errors again. The errors are just random. The nVidia drivers are downloaded the official nVidia and are the latest available for my DELL XPS M1530 with 8600M GT. (OS Win 7 Ultimate 32bit)

I also got two BSOD's at different time with a message saying:
"Unable to reset the display. A problem occured with the display driver driver"
I noted this error code on the blue screen
000000x16 nvlddmkm.sys
Dumping physical memory etc. etc.

There are no Minidumps being formed in Windows/Minidump (I just enabled them now), so I wasn't able to post any of them :-|
All temperatures normal, RAM test with Windows Memory Diagnostic/memtest/DELL Diagnostics pass, no overclocking.
However, I perfomed the stability test with Furmark for my grpahics acrd and the display started flickering with dots. Earlier when I installed the driver and had the performed the stability, it had ran absolutely fine for more than 20 min.
I read somewhere it can be an issue of Windows Update KB24548... Read more

I installed the drivers in Compatibility Mode for Win Vista SP2. After this, when I performed the test, the system still crashed and I got this error on the desktop.
