Computer wont boot, wont boot in safe mode, wont load repair centre

Q: Computer wont boot, wont boot in safe mode, wont load repair centre

The other day I updated my laptop which is a Dell Inspiron 17R running Windows 7 home premium, when I updated the computer booted ok took longer than usual, I restarted the laptop but this time it wouldn't boot up, it came up with a black screen saying repair windows(recommended) or start windows normally, I clicked repair windows it said searching for problems, attempting repairs this took about an hour and a half but unfortunately did not resolve the issue I sent the error report to windows, I restarted the laptop again,  attempted booting it in safe mode no luck and the same other various options I can try but no luck they all just crashed the laptop and began restarting it,  tried repairing it again and this time it took my to a screen with various options like load backup open cmd and format my hard drive, loading the backup did nothing and  wasn't sure what to do with cmd so decided to part ways with my stuff and format the hard drive, I did this and the laptop was formatted but the OS was still on the hard drive and it was like the first time I opened it all of my personal things were gone but win 7 home premium was still there, I set it back up again installed AVG anti virus etc downloaded a few movies ran fine the next day it said windows updates need installing so, I  did , 145 updates were made  turned my laptop back on and again it was booting up and crashing followed the steps I mentioned before noting was working after messing around with it for an hour or so I finally got safe mode whilst  in there I did an AVG scan alot of files seemed to be locked and AVG wasn't scanning them,  wasn't sure why AVG wouldn't scan them tried to undo my last update but when I followed win 7's steps it would't allow me to turn on the windows centre thing it told me to turn on, I wasn't sure what to do i thought maybe its a virus or maybe because I'm in safe mode, anyway  restarted it and continued crashing,  went to the repair centre and it searched for errors again found none so I formatted it like last time using the dell data recovery unit( think that's the name of it), formatted it again went through the processes, when i did this last time the pc was ok and started normally like it was brand new,  booted it up but this time it kept crashing again and again safe mode wont open the repair centre just gets stuck on a blue screen every time I'm really stuck on what to do, if anyone can help that would be great. I've tried on other forums but got no help sadly and unfortunately  don't have the Windows 7 installation disk. I would happily totally format the hard drive totally as I have other OS on other disks just not the windows 7 one,

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks,

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

Hello there,

It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.

Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:

1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.

4. Accept the Windows license agreement.

5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.

6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.

7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk space.

8. Click “Next” for the installation to proceed.

Hope this helps!

Backstory (skip if you need)
I'm fixing someones laptop, It was slow and taking 30 minutes to startup, i did the usually virus scan and restarted, then it was stuck in an auto repair loop. I used a windows 8 Install CD from microscoft. None of the options in it would work, install (key doesnt match) reset (missing partition), image recovery (cant find an image), restore (no restore point), etc.

Used command prompt, did stuff like bootrec, bcdedit, diskpart, and chkdsk. After it ran chkdsk it finally loaded windows. I reset/reinstalled the OS completely. Fixed, restarted, running smooth. Owner said it was working great for a day, then after turning it back on it was in an auto repair loop.

Now
It's stuck in a preair loop, I can't even boot from the 8 CD! Have it configured in the bios, it shows the the blue windows logo then the screen goes black for 3 minutes and a blue screen flashes for 1 second saying  "Your PC ran into a problem and need to restart. Collecting some info (0% complete) search online for error: 0x000021a"

The weird thing is, Windows 7 disks boot fine, but it's "not compatible". And if I physically remove the HDD, it will boot into the windows 8 CD. So I put the HDD back in (while still at the command prompt) and it wont take my commands in related to the C: . I get a "System cannot find the drive specified"

I also tried hooking upp the HDD to my PC SATA, it shows in explorer, but just right clicking it crashes explorer.exe. D... Read more

UPDATE:

I got a windows 8.1 disk made and it allowed me yo boot from the CD, but it's SLOOOOW, it takes minutes to load reset or w.e (none of them still work), or open the command prompt.

I ran chkdsk /f /r /x but it didnt help. chkdsk /r ends with:
"A disk read error occurredcc0000185
Insufficient disk space to fix the Usn Journal $J data stream."

Before when I ran it, I'm pretty sure it let me restart and booted into windows, not now.

Next I tried bootrec.
/fixmbr - succesful
/fixboot - succesfull
/rebuildBCD - Total identified Windows installations: 0
/scanOS - Total identified Windows installations: 0

Next bcdedit
Nothing worked "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found."

Next sfc /scannow
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."
Then sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=d:\Windows
"Windows resources protection didnt find integrity violations"

BCDBoot c:\WindowsFailure when attempting to copy boot files

Next diskpart - but I forgot what I did before that may have worked. All i can remember is I had to select a disk or volume, and do something with it.

Hello,

Today I noticed that I could not open my start menu with neither the windows button, ctrl + esc, or a click of the mouse. I've also had a problem the last couple of days saving/opening files in one of the programs I used to make music. I tried to go into safe mode to do system restore, but the safe mode didn't boot. It scrolled all the system files on the screen but then just stopped and nothing happened.

So, I tried the other option (forget what it's called) that lets you perform various other system restoration tasks. I brought up the system restore screen from there, but got an error that said something about corrupt files so it could not perform the restore. I checked again, and all my restore points had been deleted.

Lastly, when I click computer, all the drives are blank with no names beside them, only the icons. I can still click them and they seem to be functioning normally, so I don't know if there is a relation to this. I don't know if some registry files were deleted or if there is some other problem. I didn't notice the start menu/safe mode/blank icon issues until I just recently installed the latest windows update.

Sorry if this seemed a little long winded, but I would appreciate help from anyone.

Thanks,
adub2b23

Last night I updated windows 8.1 from windows 8.
It got to the stage where it needs to restart so it done that started the configarations and once it reached 100% it restarted.

Since then what happens is when i press power on the samsung logo comes on the screen then the black screen with the windows picture then the bsod comes up for around half a second and it restarts. then it constantly does this.

The whole cycle only takes a few seconds.

Ive tried booting in safe mode but this isnt working so I downloaded kav rescue on another computer and saved it on a flash drive, But it wont boot off this either.

Any ideas?

What does the BSOD state? Most times it is a driver issue with the Display drivers. Other times it is hardware.

Ok, it all started when i was dloading a program to make windows setups.(.msi). Then i decided i didnt like it and uninstalled it. After tht was done. I decided i was going to stick with Inno Setup. I have used it before and liked it. But then i noticed all or most of my desktop icons were missing. And all the start menu ientries were missing. So i figured i had a virus. SO i went to do a system resotre. But found that i oculdnt find it...due to to missing folders. So i decided i would then try to boot into safe mode. When i tried to boot it said it cannot find a file(same with normal mode). Ubfortunely i dont remember what it said. I think it said windows cannot find NRDL press ctrl alt delete to reboot. or somthing like that. Any ways i tried a few more times and it all failied. SO then i tried the windows recovery console. Nothing. I really didnt know whre to go with it. Then i decied to go into the bios and reset. Or i thought i was resseting them. I seleteced. "fails proof settings". But then i rebooted and things got worse. My monitor is now getting no signal, it says it is ocnnected though..... So i cant see what i am doing. Please any ideas. I installed what I thought was an updated driver for a PCIe eSATA card and since then get only the Advanced Repair options, none of which work.

The nearest I get is System Restore which finds the OS and the restore points but fails with this error, reading in part:
The inst. @ 0xfba6ca53 referenced memory at 0x0021cd49. The memory could not be read.
Or words to that effect.
None of the other options work except Command Prompt and I have no idea how to use that in this situation.

I have the only options of
a) Full Win 7 install, overwriting everything or
b) Running a Win 10 disk over it and upgrading in the hope it will preserve my files and settings.
But it may also not boot because that damn driver will still be there.

Help !! I'll monitor this from my 10 drive as best I can.

I have a Dell Studio XPS8100 running with Windows7 Home Premium Service Pack1, 64-bit OS.When I purchased it I also had Dell put in a Tv card (Hauppauge WinTv HVR-1250) figuring I might be able to watch some of the Tv Channels from the area where my family lives.

Anyway here are the list of issues I have been having over the past couple years. The first issue I noticed was when I went into Windows Media Center and clicked the Internet TV feature or the program, the Windows Media Center program would shut down. So I called Dell and they worked on the issue for a couple of sessions that included numerous hours of my time and might I add the difficulties in understanding the tech, but the end result was that the issue was never fixed and so I just gave up on the tv feature all together and started using the computer to do Cad drawings which is the main reason I had purchased the unit.

Over the next couple of years working with the unit I noticed that once in a while Explorer would stop working and restart itself once in a while, Then the other day I installed a new Cad program and the program would starts itself to the part of the program where I would start using it and then just dissapears of the screen.

In the same fashion that Media Center did. So in trying to figure out if I could fix the issue, thinking that perhaps another program might be conflicting with the Cad program, I decided to start the computer in Safe Mode, when I do that the computer boots in safe mode ... Read more

Please do the following:Get a look at the error message presented by the BSOD (blue screen of death) ....Start tapping the F8 key after you press the ON button, and continue tapping until you are presented with the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" screen.
Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and press the <ENTER> key.Your system will attempt to restart normally, but when it crashes, it will not re-start: Instead, you will see a BSOD with error message.
Record the error message details (contained in the areas outlined in red, in the above example image), and post in your reply.

#1 Hi, basically this probem arose from nowhere. I came back from holiday 6 days ago and my pc took longer than i remember to boot. Only till i realised the next day and day after it was getting longer and some times not loading past the 'Windows' screen. Each time when it hasn't loaded fully, I turn it off and re-boot pressing F8 to get up safe mode, which doesn't work at all.
It gets stuck on '/avgdiseh' doesn't load past and will stay like that till turned off. Start up repair does absolutely nothing, it asks to do System restore which then errors and reboots, if i press cancel it stays on the 'Scanning' screen for hours.. (8 hours today)

#2 I've now seemed to run into another problem trying to boot from my CD drive. First time I loaded everything correctly got to 'install windows' screen clicked start up repair which did nothing. Ever since that windows won't detect my CD drive even though it opens and did read CD's.(watched a film on it the other day)

I've looked online and other people have had the same problems and clearly i haven't found a solution yet. I've tried cleaning the inside of my case, double checking connections, changing boot options. From what i've read its either a failed HDD, failed RAM (, or failed CD drive in the case of my second dilemma)

I'm just curious as to whether anyone can pin point what the problem is. If its an easy fix or whether it is possibl... Read more

Whats going on guys,
I have a Windows XP Professional Edition and i incurred a spyware virus on my PC, so i made a dumb decision by running MSCONFIG and changing my SAFEBOOT option, I did this because previously I couldn't even get into Safe Mode, it would load the files on the screen

and my CPU would reboot, i even tried the other Safe Mode options (command prompt, networking, etc.) I still couldnt accomplish logging into a Safe Mode. But I could still log into Windows Normally.

BUT Now (after changing my SAFEBOOT option in MSCONFIG, thinking i couldnt log into Safe Mode that way), I cannot even log into Windows XP (PERIOD.) Normally or via Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, or any-other way. My CPU loads up and once it reaches the Windows XP Splash Screen it appears to be normally loading, then my screen goes blank and my system reboots, It reboots in an endless loop, i could leave this sucker on for a whole month and it would still be in an infinite boot loop between the start-up of the CPU and the Windows XP Splash Screen..lol

Hello everyone! I have a fairly big problem, or atleast I believe it is? I recently bought a used Gateway Computer. (It runs on windows vista service pack 2 & no disk came with it.) Everything was great for a week or so, until I started to watch netflix & received an error saying I need to uninstall Microsoft Silverlight & try to watch another movie so it could prompt reinstallation. I done as it suggested, but when the computer went to restart it wouldn't load past the windows screen. I shut it down & when it restarted I pressed F8 & went into safe mode w/networking. After some research I attempted system restore (starting at the last point before the update & ending with the last restore point I had available) but it didn't help at all...I then tried the "repair your computer" option from the F8 menu, but it loaded up to a blank square (instead of user profile) that said other user. I've tried all the users on the computer, but get the same error "the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted." I had to remove the battery to get the computer to shut off, I had no other option. I started the computer in safe mode again & attempted the Gateway Recovery, but it restarted & took me back to the blank square page...The computer isn't apart of a domain, so I'm pretty much completely lost...Please someone, anyone help!

Are there any other diagnostic tools to help?

Will I have to reinstall all my applicatons (oh no) ?

Hello all, newbie here and competely lost. Here's the sad story. I was wiping the keyboard off with a dry napkin while having my eye's on the tv for a second. All of a sudden I hear the harddrive take off and things starting to happen. The last thing I seen on the screen was the word hibernate... in the middle of the screen, just before everything shutdown. I've never used hibernate in my life, not even sure how. Anyway, now my pc wont boot up, not even in safe mode. All I get is a black screen with white letters. It says:The last attempt to restart the system from it's previous location failed. Attempt to restart again? Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu. Continue with system restart. That's it, there's no cursor or nothing works. I've hit every key and rebooted a thousand times and I just get the same screen. I don't even know the easy things to do on these so I'm hoping this is just something simple that everybody knows about except me. So somebody tell me what key to hit to fix this please. Thanks

Hope someone can help me.

I start my computer and it goes to the screen that lists "start in safe mode", etc. I have tried all choices and it tries to start but then loops back to the same "start in safe mode", etc. screen. I have tried F8 F10 F12 and trying to boot up from the Windows XP cd. It just keeps looping back. I have called Geek Squad and they can't come check it for a week. I hope I can fix it on my own. Is there a way to get around the loop and boot up or is it toast.

I hope I have put this in the right section, forgive me if not.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I have been having.
My Dad's computer doesn't seem to want to start at the moment. It goes to start up, the initial screen comes up, and then the second screen that flashes up (the black screens with the white writing...I hope this is making sense!), and then after that it just beeps and then starts again.
Sometimes it goes onto the screen with the options of start windows normally, start windows in safe mode, safe mode with networking etc...but none of the options work, it just restarts again with the same result.
He had to borrow an XP home disc from my uncle as his computer is, well was, running that and he cannot find his own, but it wont boot from that disc. I have been into the bios to enable it to boot from disc first. He also has a back-up disc which he said had a repair function on it, and that works, yet after it apparently repairs things, there is no improvement. There isn't anything else useful on that disc. After exiting from the contents of the disc a black screen comes up with A:\> I tried typing D:\> but it said it was invalid. I then typed C:\> and the c promt came up, but everything I tried typing such as CHKDSK returned the message 'bad command or filename'.

Does anyone have any ideas of what's going on and how to fix this? If he had his own XP disc would that work? I have heard there are programs ... Read more

A:wont boot or go into safe mode

Well Trevor mate without knowing what specs the machine is or how old it is it is very hard to say what is wrong - some system specs would be really helpful System Info - See Your System Specs

Also have a read though this Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

If by any chance you can get into safe mode please run these
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

I have Windows XP (Home SP2). My PC won't boot in Safe mode. It ignores the F8 key. I recently (with TechSupportForum help) cleaned out a trojan. I don't know if the failure to recognise the F8 key is a legacy of this process. It certainly used to do it, last time I tried, but that was some time ago. Can this be fixed? Or is there an alternative way of booting into Safe Mode?

Hi All,

I have again been given a friends PC to fix...but again the repair is beyond me so i am here asking for help

The PC is custom built with XP installed on it.
The PC wont start or even go into Safe Mode, it just crashes and starts the entire routine again, this continues over and over.

I do get a screen before the boot starts which says the following:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If you computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Food Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you arent sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Then the normal options are displayed, with Safe Mode and so on. None of the options work and the PC just keeps coming back to this screen.

I have spoken to the guy who the PC belongs to and he said there were no recent hardware changes but is not sure about software.

Is there anything that can be done to fix and get the PC working again?

Thanks in advance

While working on my computer last night my computer unexpectedly froze, so i reboot it and i get to the windows logo screen with the bar that goes across midscreen, it will take a few minutes and sit there and then just restart and repeat. When i try to go into safe mode i get a bunch of lines that scroll up my screen similar to : multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\windows32\drivers\mup.sys - this is the last one on my screen before it waits a few minutes and just restarts. I have tried to boot windows normally and with the last settings, and normally, no luck.

I have also put my XP disc that came with my computer and it gets to where it is examining 476938mb disc 0 at id0 on bus 0 on nvatabus.... it never gets any further. Any help would be appreciated please and thanks

A:net book wont boot from safe mode please help no idea what to do

Hi and welcome.
Being a netbook -no easy answer!
You will need a USB Dvd drive.
Similar to the one shown here.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/MY-Link-External-DVD-ROM-Laptops-Desktops/dp/B000YIVOIK

You will also need the install Cd [if you have one] and then boot to the Recovery Console.
Check info here.

Hello,
I have a Compaq Presario Computer with windows XP on it. recently i started getting an error message which says lsass.exe and the computer doesnt go any further after I click on ok which is the only option there. It just goes to a blank black screen. someone mentioned to me that i should try to do a system restore on it through the safe mode, but that doesnt work either becasue same error comes even in safe mode. i have tons of data on this computer and i cannot afford to lose it. i need a way to recover my data. it seems to me that the only option i may have is ot do a system recovery through the cds that i got when i purchased the computer, is that true? someone also mentioned to me that if i have the Operating System CD then i might not have to do anything but just repair. How does this work? I cannot seem to find the O.S cd, where can i get it from? Is it the same as the Windows XP cd? also, this problem has been occuring since a few days now and of course i havent been turning on the computer since there isnt much i can do, so by this problem just being there is it making it worse or not? i just dont have the time right now but does that mean that the problem just sitting there is harming it further? Some people have also told me of how to recover data using Ubuntu or something, how good is that? please help me in this asap. thank you so much

A:Compaq Presario wont boot up even in safe mode

You can use a number of Linux distros to tunnel through the back door of a Windows system for the purpose of rescuing your files but if you have to burn a CD, it may as well be Hirens BootCD which includes MiniXP and once in there, you'll be in familiar territory to find and copy out your data on to memory sticks or an external hard drive.

When you've got it all, then go for the computer manufacturer's recovery disk and it won't matter too mucj if it restores the machine to the day it left the factory. You'll lose any programmes you've installed since then but hopefully, you'll still have the installation disks for those.

Hi,

Do you get the basic startup? with the bios and everything?
If so, try pressing f8 and go to the option: disable automatic restart on system failure.
If I'm correct you will be getting a blue screen of death (a.k.a. BSOD).

also you will get a message which sould say something like: 0x0000000xx ( where the last 2 x's stand for a number or letter)

Could you post that code?

Ok here's the deal.

I run windows XP home. I was on my computer (its a HP desktop) all day yesterday. I didnt do any hardware changes. I did have to go into safe mode and do a system restore from early in the week and after I did that, I restarted it a few times, it worked great and now...it wont do anything.

I turn on the pc and hit F8 to go into safe mode. I get the safemode option, I choose run in safe mode, and then my OS system and then the screen goes black and stays black. No blinking cursor, no blue screen of death...just black. It does the same thing when I just try to start it up normally. I get the Compaq start up screen and then it goes to black and nothing. No mouse, no sound when I hold a key down on the keyboard...nothing.

I have been reading in these forums for hours trying to find someone with the same problem and couldnt find one so I do hope that this post in not a repeat.

Please help.

Wendy
