Solved: slow cable internet speed

Q: Solved: slow cable internet speed

I am paying for 5 meg cable internet and only getting like 30-40 kb/s download any suggestions?
My modem is connected directly to computer (ethernet.) ISP said it was a software problem.
I have run antivirus(Mcafee87), anti malware (Malware bytes), CCleaner. Help would be much appreciated, thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi. im running windows 7 home premium, with 2gb of ram,2.2ghz,on a presario CQ62 notebook. i have high speed cable internet through roadrunner.i have no viruses, nothing at all running accept for the services that normallly run on this computer.cpu usage is at zero, and everything runs fine, that is untill i start surfing the internet. im only getting 6mbps or even lower at times, when i should be getting 10mbps or more.i have run multiple different speed tests through road runner, and they basically all conclude that my download speed is 6mbps or lower, sometimes reaching as low as 3mbps.alot of times it will start out at 20mbps and then dramatically drop to almost nill.my upload however seems normal and never changes at 49.i have another computer thats a dell with 4gbs of ram and a faster processor and im getting 20mbps+++ fast! does having a faster processesor and more ram make a difference while surfing the net? i have an emachine with only 1gb of ram and windows xp,and its faster then this new presario at surfing the net using this same line.its really noticeable just flippin through pages or doing searches.i can definitly see the lag.i have also tried multiple browsers to see if that was the problem, including, chrome, firefox, opera.still the same no matter what i do help

Hi!
I have been having a major issue with my internet.

I will try to provide as much information as possible.

First of all:
-I have cable internet, my ISP is Charter
-I have 2 Computers. 1 Laptop and 1 Desktop. And i have an old desktop computer.

Tech Specs.>

Laptop:XPS M1530, customized at www.dell.com than 2 months old
-Its OS is Windows Vista Home Premium
-Processor: Intel Core, 2 Duo, T8300 @ 2.4GHz
-RAM/Memory:4GB
-64 bit operating system
-500GB of Hardrive space

Desktop(new): Studio XPS 435MT
-Its OS is Windows Vista Home Premium
-Processor: Intel Core, i7 920 @2.67 GHz
-RAM/Memory:6GB
-64 bit operating system
-1TB of Hardrive Space(1000~GB)

Desktop(old)ell Dimension 8200
-Its OS is Windows XP
-Processor: N/A(i am somewhat unable to use the machine at the moment, thus we purchased new computers...)
-RAM/Memory:256MB
-less than 40GB of Hardrive Space
*Both have McAfee

Ok, so the problem. I am able to connect both the laptop and the desktop(new) to the internet through my modem and what not. However, during web browsing, online gaming(even the simplest of games that only require as little as a dial-up connection.), downloading, and updating. When im browsing the web, Internet Exploror and Mozilla Firefox say that they cannot display the webpage(the typical) Task manager reads out a 100Mbps network speed for "Local Area Connection. Edit: So relieved now, solved the problem.
I don't know what the problem is and its starting to get on my nerve.

Just a couple of weeks ago my internet was running at its normal speed, but then just recently its running a lot slower. The normal download speed for my Qwest DSL was about 1000 kbps but now its around 300 kbps and my normal upload speed was about 1500 kbps and now its around 400 kbps.

I did a full system virus/spyware scan and found some stuff and deleted them but I'm still having the same problem. I heard from somewhere else that the Internet Security Suite could be slowing down the internet, but I ruled that out becuase I had Zonealarm Internet Security Suite for a long time and it has never slow down my internet.

Well I think I provided everything I know so far. Any help would be nice and if you need more info, I'll try to provide as much as I can.

Hello Everyone,
I need help please. I have 4 computers (iMac, 2 laptops and 1 PC desktop) on a wireless network in different rooms of my house. All but one have 20+ mbps speed. The problem desktop computer is new but has 2.4 mbps speed. I have cable modem with a fast bandwidth and a Cisco N600 router.

I changed the network card (ASUS PCE-N53 Wireless -N Adapter) in the problem computer which didn't improve anything. As I write this, I am using a laptop on the desk with the problem computer and just did a speedtest which came in at 20.13 mbps. If I hard wire the problem computer it runs at 30+ mbps.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hello. I'm staying at a dorm in Flordia, and noticed that the internet speed around the place is slow at many points. I was wondering if it is possible to speed up the connection by getting a different modem, or if it is out of our hands.

I suspect the speed issues are simply too many P2P services running on the network. From all the requests we get from students on "locked-down" campus networks to bypass the restrictions, that would be my guess.

So I'm having a very strange issue with my internet speed. My computer is practically brand new - got it April of this year. It is a Dell XPS One, 218GB hard drive. I still have over half my hard drive free. When I first got my computer, I had cable internet with a wired connection, never had any problems. Recently we had to temporarily move out of our house, and are staying with friends who have wireless internet. To start with, I connected just fine and internet ran great. But then it suddenly slowed dramatically - it is most noticeable with videos on sites like Hulu, YouTube, and with downloads. I can't watch videos at all, they are paused 90% of the time, and downloads are taking about 10x longer.

I checked all the other computers in the house, but mine is the only one having this problem. I did several system restores, tried uninstalling recently new programs, and it wasn't working, but then all of a sudden started working again. Thought I fixed it. But it came back a second time. This time, I tried removing several large folders on my hard drive (at that time, only had about 40GB free - managed to increase it to 112GB free), and immediately after that, it started working properly again. Thought I'd really figured it out.

Well, about a week ago, it did it again. Since then, I have done everything possible to speed up my computer. I did a full removal of Norton, replacing it with AVG. Ran a full system scan, it found and repaired 2 trojans. Downloade... Read more

I just recently added a cable modem to my computer obviously thinking that it would greatly decrease download times compared to my previous 56k modem. However, whenever I want to use WinMX and I begin downloading a song, the max speed it's ever gone is 15kbps and rarely ever gets over 3kbps while my cable modem's download should be more towards 900 kbps. I've tried limiting the bandwidth of uploading off of my computer as well as connecting to a secondary connection, but the download speed is still the same. With other programs (i.e. Internet Explorer and Kazaa) my cable modem works fine, but with WinMX (the only program I know of to get the high-quality music I like) it runs slow. What can I do to speed up the download speed with WinMX?

I think it has helped, not certain if it will be like a fresh install because windows is slower than it was two weeks ago. If 3 weeks is best windows can handle for being ready for a new install I may have to go back to Linux. I hope this thread can stay on this forum somewhere to help others follow the link I posted above for possible solutions to this problem, it will save them time and effort trying numerous things.

Hello. I am on Windows XP, connected wirelessly to the Internet via a Linksys wcg200 router. Everything has always worked wonderfully until recently, when my cousin started messing around in the Windows networking settings. For a day, I couldn't even get online. Now I have created a new wireless network, and can at least get online. But my speeds are 1013 Kbs for download and -1307 Kbs for uploads. SLOW. I am now 90% positive that this has to do with some setting that he changed.

Also, not sure if this matters, but in ipconfig, my ethernet adapter is in a media disconnected state.

First off i have charter 3mb service, and for the past year i've been happy with their services and their connection to my modem. Recently though, the internet has been acting funny. At first my internet would completley shut off, being only stuck on send and never got to online untill around 9pm. The charter guys came over to my house and checked my internet. they said they found a coax cable from the outside that was damages, so he replaced it. the internet worked fine after that for a good 3days, then it started acting up again.

So, since the guys working at charter said that my connection to their main server was excellent, i thought maybe it was my modem. i went and i bought a new motorola surgboard sb5120. The internet starting working again, but this time the modems lights would reset every 10=15min of use. If it was idle it didn't do this. I called charter again and they said that mayber it was my power supply, they suggested connecting it to an outlet by itself, or an outlet that does not share power with the computer. so i did, and it started working better. now the modem lights would only reset every hour, but still it did this. so now im stuck at this point.

Any suggestions? I will be extremely gratful for any help in solving this because this gets really anoying when playing games. once again thx for the help

I am using a relative's IMB Thinkpad with no known problems. I got high speed cable internet hooked up on July 11th. I was able to connect fine and did a few virus scans, startup changes and removed some programs over the next couple of days. The internet was still working fine. I had limited connectivity the night before last and my ISP said there were some problems in my area. Yesterday after using the computer in the morning (everything was fine), I rebooted and ever since then my computer is permanently acquiring the network address. My i.p. address and subnet mask shows as all 0's. The IBM manufacturer and ISP said it's probably my ethernet card, but I wanted to get other opinions before looking into another computer or card. I am able to connect to the internet now using dial up. What are some things I can do to see if it's actually the card or perhaps the settings on my computer?

I currently have my wireless adapter disabled because my computer would switch to wireless when the regular adapter wouldn't work. I do not have wireless set up and haven't ever used it.

A:Permanently 'acquiring Network Address' For High Speed Cable Internet

Try the following fixes:Log on as an administrator, go Start > Run and type: "cmd". In the window that appears type: "netsh winsock reset". When the program is finished, you will receive the message: "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset." Close the command box and reboot your computer.Go Start > Run > type: "cmd" In the window that appears type: "ipconfig /flushdns". Close the command box.Go Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and and choose Properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Reboot. Warning: Some Internet Service Providers need specific DNS settings. You need to make sure that you know if such DNS settings are required before you make this change. If that doesn't fix it I would try reinstalling the driver for the ethernet card.

Hi guys. I hope you can help on this issue I've been having with my internet connection, I don't know what to do...

I resently formatted my harddrive because my internet all of a sudden started being very slow but after the format it's still the same issue. Now I've tried plugging the connection line into my laptop and there there's no problem.

I am gettin' a slower download than upload...

I have a 10mb download/1 upload speed LAN connection. I ran a speed test on the same connection and on my stationary it shows like 250 kbs download and like 750 kbs upload, while on my laptop it shows like 8 Mbs download and 750 kbs upload... so what's the problem?

So far I've found out that it has nothing to do with the internet connection line or my NIC (I tried a brand new one and it was the same issue), it's not spyware or malware, it's not fragmented and under internet connections it says that I'm connected on a 100 Mb network card and there are no problems with any of the devices?

However I can see that if I open the job list, the download connection is very unstable going from up to 750 kb for a breif moment then falls to a halt at 0 kb... and moreover it says that I'm not using any percent of the network?

I'm on windows 7 and haven't had any problems before this, the rest of the system works just fine, but not the internet. If I try and download something it won't get higher than like 50 kb and then may... Read more

Hi.

I have this very annoying problem and I'm really out of hopes. I don't know what to do anymore. I'll make a summary of the problem and will be as concise as possible

So I have this Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop with a broadband connection (direct cable, no router) and 3 weeks ago I reinstalled my Windows. Everything went well until 2 weeks ago when the internet speed went down, dial-up like. Pages won't load, and if they do they load just partially. I called my ISP and they said they had no problem. I couldn't find any solution so I thought maybe, some sort of virus or spyware is doing this so I formated the whole hard-disk and did a clean install of Windows.

Unfortunatelly nothing changed, the download speed is the same. Here is a speedtest.net evaluation:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2276053238.png

Drivers are up to date, no windows firewall, no antivirus and no windows update. The ISP support guy told me to deactivate IPv4 and IPv6 from Local Area Connection, but nothing changed. I did a TCP/IP reset which raised my down speed to almost 1 Mb, but after a few minutes it went back to "dial-up". With the down speed being the same, Speedtest sometimes shows me upload speed in between 50-70 Mb which is unbelievable (I will make a ss next time I see this).

And the very weird thing is that I have another netbook (pretty weak config, Intel Atom CPU, 2 GB RAM) and with the same cable it has normal speed (the kind of speed I had on this Dell too). An... Read more

There are a lot a variables. How is your cable made? Is it a store bought cable? Did you make it? Is it run or is it just laying on the floor run from router to PC? A little more info might help but ultimately it might come down to without being there to test the actual cable and NiC we won't be able to know for sure.

Hello all. I'm sure this has come up quite a bunch, but it's really frustrating and I need to get an answer to this. Here is the story. I had recently wipped my harddrive clean so I could organize my files and programs better. I have a 200 gigs harddrive, laptop, and have about 130 gigs left. I've installed all the programs I want, and I've ran my virus scaner to make sure nothing has gotten in yet, and my computer is clean. So you may ask how I know my computer is slow? The web seems to be slower than normal, and the most noticable thing is that when I try to watch a vid on youtube, the load bar doesn't load fast enough for it to play, it has to keep stopping to load some more. This has never been a problem. Like I said, I have cable for connection. I've seen lots of stuff on the net and youtube about "increase your computer preformace...etc. Is there a for certain way that can up computer preformance? If anyone has some suggestions I would appreciate it greatly! Thanks

So i just set up cable internet, i used to use DSL highspeed and now my internet has been particularly slow. I've tried checking all the places where there could be bottle necks and I can't figure it out. Just a little background: I have a macbook 2.166 GHz, 2 gig ram, its fairly clean and i ran a Norton anti-virus check and nothing popped up. When I moved i originally got a N linksys router but that crapped out every 30 min, so I exchanged it for a G linksys range booster, which was consistent, but very slow, so now i have a D-link N router which works ok, but I still find my download speeds kind of slow.

I tried plugging my modem directly to the macbook and its going at around the same speed as when i'm connected to wireless. Oddly enough, when i connect directly to my router, its actually slightly slower. I did shaw's online speed test and i get 10-12 Mbs and when i called shaw, they said my signal strength is good and to run anti-virus software. I suppose it could be some setting on my macbook, but I can actually download slightly faster on a neighbors with the same macbook, and when i had DSL I was easily able to dl a torrent over 100Kbs. I've heard from others who have Extreme Cable (which is what i have) that they can get 1Mbs with their torrents and right now i'm getting around 30-50Kbs. I've been trying very high-seeded torrents too so I'ld expect atleast 100 Kbs.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

I did a search to see if my question could be answered but it didn't really help, maybe you guys can. I appreciate anything you can do.

I have windows xp. an athlon 64 3500, gig of ram, 200gb hard drive.

Latley, around the last 2 weeks it has seemed to be much slower than usual, which is causing me problems because I like to play Battlefield 2 on the net, and download videos and just whatever else I feel like doing.
Anyway, I called my provider, cebridge connections, and they couldn't figure out why either, everything "looks ok on our end" is what they say. The tech guy had me run a download speed test at pcpitstop.com and it was around 130-200 kb a second, but dipped down as low as 33 kb a second. That's just terrible.

So they had a guy come out and checked all my hardware, modem etc. He hooked his laptop up to it and its speed was around 1050kb/second. So why is his running so well? I've done virus scans using AVG, I did a spyware check with norton, that kind of stuff. Nothing comes up. I downloaded the pcpitstop.com internet optimizer, that cost 30.00 dollars, and that didn't help...which is irritating. Anyway, any suggestions?

Thank you for taking the time to read my request.

I purchased an HP entertainment laptop (windows vista os) about a year ago and I started experiencing problems with my speed a couple of months ago.

Most recently, I've experienced the following:

1. Slower speed surfing the net
2. Slow to open up an Internet Window (about 8 seconds)
3. Can not browse internet at the same time that an anti virus program is turned on (to monitor). Has occured with Norton and Trend Micro.
4. Can no longer access I-Tunes store or Rhapsody store when I open the applications.
5. You Tube videos are stop and go instead of running fluidly.

All of this is new behavior for my laptop...

Any ideas on what may be happening or what I should try to do next? I downloaded hijackthis, so I have that software program on my computer.

If anyone is willing to help, I would greatly appreciate it! Please let me know if you need additional information.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi

My internet speed is consistently fast (25-30mbps), but Chrome and IE sometime run slow sometimes. For instance I'll be browsing Yahoo fine for a couple minutes, but then I'll try to open another tab to do a Google search and the browser will stall for about a minute before loading that page. Or I could click a link on a webpage and the browser will stall and show a blank white page for a minute. Loading the content on a webpage usually takes close to the normal amount of time, it just stalls before hand. It doesn't happen every time I click something, but it happens often enough to be a nuisance.

Last night I went under settings and did "Referesh your PC" which is supposed to restore defaults and delete installed apps, but the problem is still here.

EDIT--

Here's an example: Everything usually stalls at the same time but not always. Just now, Gmail stalled for 2 minutes but I was still able to open a new tab and complete a Google search. However, when I tried opening a new tab and going to Gmail that way, that tab stalled too.

A:Internet Broswers are Slow but Internet Speed is Fast

I get that too sometimes, it is clearly caused by your computer (and in my case my computer) not your connection. I have ti with chrome but not IE, because i never open IE to check it. I have windos 8 so we have similar experiences in several respects. Mine haven't been as bad as yours lasting only 30 seconds or so at worst. I think this is due to large processes running in task manager and hogging memory/processor capacity. The only things i can advise is to: see if there are any large processes running under the details tab of task manager which should not be running, scan with your antivirus and with malwarebytes (there is a free version)to check that the cause isn't a virus of some sort, see if any startup items can be safely disabled (this can be done from a feature within the program CCleaner from piriform) and try clearing your temp files (CCleaner can also do this) and browsing history along with deleting any junk you have in the recycle bin and deleting old files you no longer need/uninstalling old programs you no longer need. When using CCleaner be VERY CAREFUL not to disable startup items without first verifying they are safe to stop (check google) and NEVER use it's registry tools (anything that attempts to "clean" the registry can damage your system). One other thing that might help you is disbaling add-ons in the browser and making plugins "clcik to play" rather than running automatically, doing this will mean there is less content to load so loading will be fas...
