IE11 (desktop), Win8.1: Java not working / compatible since update!

Q: IE11 (desktop), Win8.1: Java not working / compatible since update!

Hi there,
Prior to the 8.1 update I was able to run java fine on the desktop IE10. For work this is essential, as I access dropbox to upload files, etc. I'd much rather keep using IE, however since 8.1 I get an alert that some of my add-ons are not compatible
with the new enhanced security features, etc.
I turned off "Enhanced Protected Mode", toggled various settings, uninstalled/reinstalled latest java, etc. Still nothing working. I'd rather not get a new browser as I love IE... any solutions?
I'm running a 64bit OS & processor, high-end machine.
Many, many thanks!

Preferred Solution: IE11 (desktop), Win8.1: Java not working / compatible since update!

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

IE Desktop (Menu bar) Favorites always seem to sort by name. Want to manually shift high usage items to top like I could with IE8. Have disabled Add-ons (Classic IE, Logitech SetPoint, Shockwave) with no effect. Looked in IE options for a sort or drag/drop setting, but didn't see anything.

A:Win8.1 Preview, IE11 desktop: Can't organize Favorites

Welcome to the forums, You could click the dropdown arrow by "Add to Favourites", select "Organise Favourites", at the next window you can manually move them around. HTH.

Hello, I've installed UFT 12.02 on my laptop (Win 8.1) which has java version 8 update 65. After installing UFT, I tried to execute few scripts. After sometime noticed that Java console is erased. Later tried to download latest version of Java but couldn't. is UFT 12.02 compatible with higher versions of Java (8 and above) Thanks,SB

A:Is latest version of Java (8 update 65) compatible with UFT ...

Partial SOLUTION. I kept having problems with the setup or Java re-install aborting (something like a 1608 error...) The ultimate workaround, was to DELETE the JRE folder under HP/HPE's  UFT directory (since UFT was using it's own JRE that somehow conflicted with other JAVA installs) -- -AND- I removed all the ENVIRONMENT variables that dealt with "JAVA".   After that the JAVA setup would work without failure. Getting UFT install back so that it doesn't clobber the JAVA8 is the next step...

Web shortcuts don't open from Desktop since Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

With Internet Explorer ?Enhanced Protected Mode? switched on, when a shortcut to a webpage is opened from the Desktop, the shortcut doesn?t open.  Internet Explorer just shows a blank window.

With Internet Explorer ?Enhanced Protected Mode? switched back off, the shortcuts open as expected.

Was OK before Anniversary Update, so something in the update breaks compatibility with Internet Explorer ?Enhanced Protected Mode?.

I loaded IE11 preview a few days ago and it has worked flawlessly. Today I ran Windows Update and after this IE11 would not open - I just got an error message saying IE could not operate. It took a number of closing of the error dialogue box to get the error boxes tto stop appearing. I have gone back to IE10 and have no problems again. I tried reinstalling 11 and it worked fine again - until I ran Windows Update again same problem happened. I am sure there is some conflict with an update or more - KB2879017 looks a likely culprit.

Grateful for any advice on how to get IE11 to co-exist with Windows Update. Thanks.

I'm running W7 Professional 64bit. Entirely stable system - no problems.

anyone seen this one?
on booting up 8.1, lenovo z410, the first few attempts to use IE11 from the desktop fail. "cannot open page".
connection troubleshooter produces nothing.

go to APPS > IE and it works fine.

after using chrome and the tile app for awhile, IE11-Desktop will gain coherency and start working.

is there a way to reinstall the desktop side?

this is a clean install with little/nothing loaded on it, about to be deployed for real work so its important.
I've never seen this issue before on 7/8 so kinda lost/bewildered

Maybe can not get that page immediately, try setting blank page for start-up. (about:blank) and than as a start page.

I have 7 email accounts on our Exchange server for different business and personal roles.  I have always used OWA instead of Outlook to segregate accounts on my desktop.  For quick logins I have been using "Keyboard Express"
Macro program  to insert USER and PASSWORD into OWA.   With some update applied in December 2015, Keyboard Express no long works on most of my Macro hotkeys because the IE hotkeys have taken precedence.  Such as ALT-H and other.
This same think happened to IE11 when I ran the Windows 10 upgrade 2 months ago, so I restored Win7 with a disk image to get rid of Window 10.
Is there a way to assign precedence between a Macro Program and IE11 Hotkeys ?

Good Afternoon,

I am running into issues trying to upgrade to IE11. It looks like there are several issues in my CheckSUR Log, but I am not sure how to fix them. I have ran SFC /scannow a couple times and no errors have been identified. I have been having this problem for a couple months now and have just been using Chrome. I have also had several issues with the Aero Effects and Themes as I have to troubleshoot that multiple times a day.
I am receiving error code '3FD' from Windows Update regarding IE11.

Attached is my log.

Thank you in advance for your help!

hello and welcome skohon now personally I would download IE11 Download Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 from Official Microsoft Download Center - it says on my machine I already have it if yours does the there is something quite wrong.

If it is not on your machine then you save the above to downloads and then do what is in this Install or uninstall Internet Explorer - Windows Help

I have done this myself on odd occasions and it saves you having to muck around with updates.

First you might like to run this though in safe mode if necessary
Disk Check and run the /f and /r switches if necessary.

Hello everyone! I am a computer user and try to help my fellow church members with their computers at times.
Just ran into a problem with a friend's computer using Windows 8.1 where her computer locks up at times.
The only thing I have found so far is in her IE browser, under tools, the internet settings is greyed out when she logs into Facebook. Doesn't seem to be consistent, however.
A friend told me about this site thing it was a "rootkit" but so far I have found no rootkits or viruses.
Anyone seen anything like this?
I think she bought it new about Christmas time and has not gotten anywhere with it.
Thanks for your help, Ken.

A:IE11 locks up at times in win8.1

The desktop is a HP Pavilion 500 PC Series running windows 8.1
I have used CCleaner, Malware Bytes, and Avast Antivirus on it along with the rootkit discovery software on this site.
I have done boot scans and full scans and found no problems.
When she was using IE Browser 11 the computer would lock up.
She gets her email via the yahoo browser and you would double click on an email to display it and nothing would happen.
I believe the browser would also lock up while she was using Facebook.
I noticed when using Facebook that the tools:internet options would be greyed out.
Seems that would be OK maybe after the page fully loaded.
She was also complaining of videos in Yahoo where the screen was green before she would try to select it.
That possibly because she didn't have Adobe Flash? so I downloaded the Adobe Products.
Currently it wants to do 76 software updates and is stuck at 0% even though I have a 50 meg connection.
I went to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder and tried to delete the files in the download folder but it looked like windows was trying to not let me do that.
Hope this is a better understanding. Thanks for the welcome, Ken.

When I try to run the videos at this site, the black window for the video opens, but no video appears to run. Using MS Defender for AV, and have tried disabling pop up blocker, with no change. I can run the videos with my Win7 laptop which also uses IE11 and Defender. The difference between the two setups seems to be Win8.1. Any thoughts on what I could change for settings to get the video to run.

It's in Flash format, do you have Adobe Flash Player add-on installed and up to date ? If you do, try right click on that screen and chang Hardware Acceleration. It's all running fine here.

Some sites, apparently this one is about to have the same problem, cannot place cookies, but sometimes can, on my Asus laptop hard drive.

Three sites so far... I have allow cookies in both FF35. and IE 11; however, when I login , I get logged right back out when I click on anything like a forum link to a particular thread type. Like forums or web mail ( this is on another site).

On these forums, I went to tutorials and was logged out. I was able to log back in and post this.

I remember this Windows 8.1 laptop installed a security update on Feb 12. I remember a Windows update installing on Friday 13. But the second one isn't in the list.

I have AVG paid firewall and anti-virus I keep up to date, as well as Malwarebytes.

Cache in FF35 clears when I close the browser. I have cleared the cache in IE 11. Both multiple times.

I did see some Certificates in FF I have no idea how they got there. Spain and China from the look of them. Some mention they are China.

I deleted them. No difference.

Any suggestions on how to fix this ?

Thanks !

edit: Now 8 sites wont let me in. It seems to be increasing as I look over various forums I log into regularly. I'm going to scan my computer for trojans.

edit 2: I checked my firewall logs... that is blocking cookies from being placed on my hard drive. No trojans found.

I have AVG Internet Security 2014. I was unable to find anything in the software to allow cookies from specified sites.

Had Win7 running for about a year on it, no problems.
Wiped it and did a clean install of Win8 last month and notice now when closing IE11 tabs, the rest of the tabs take a while to resize. I usually keep about 8 tabs open and close/open regularly. Same sites as when I had Win7 but never noticed any sluggishness there. I verified IE Software GPU is not enabled. All IE settings are default. My previous IE had way more plugins that my new IE. Anyone else notice this?

Hi, I'm in a real jam, my laptop updated to Vista sp2, now my applets don't seem to work. So I can basically only view mobile web sites. I can't even get to most help pages. I've upgraded to latest version of Sun java. This is OS wide as you can see the browser not supporting the mail yahoo site and you can see the services applet not working in the extended view. The services does work in classic view and I see java.exe in my process list. Really need some help here because this is about the only site I can access properly. I can't see verfication boxes for new account creation on forums and the maps section of google maps is blank. I have no error messages in my event logs either. I actually had to send these screen dumps to my n78 then upload to photobucket from my phone. Javascript is not working it seems.I've done a virus scan, regclean, uninstalled java and reinstalled it and still does not work.Windows update went to sp2 and I think that's when Javascript stopped working, I've rolled back to restore point before update but that didn't help either. You can see that on o the services screen dump nothing shows in extended view although standard view works. Thanks for any help.

I'm trying to use automatic repair using my new install disk but it keeps telling me it is unable to make repairs because the target windows is locked. WTF? I'm full control administrator and are not connected to any network. I really hope someone helps me here cuz my win8 OS is acting very unstable. I love the new feature that lets one make repairs without touching any personal data. When I use File Explorer on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Preview I have the navigation pane set to 'show all folders' and 'automatically expand to folder'.On Win8 I use SkyDrive for Desktop, and I place the SkyDrive folder in 'C:\Users\Karl\'; and the SkyDrive folder appears in the File Explorer navigation pane under the Karl Dixon folder.Win 8.1preview has Skype for Desktop integrated into the OS.; and the SkyDrive folder appears at the top of the File Explorer navigation pane.
As I am currently back using Win8 due to an unrelated issue, I would like to know how to have Win8 show the SkyDrive folder at the top of the navigation pane whilst still using 'show all folders' and 'automatically expand to folder' settings.

I'm currently hoping that if I uninstall SkyDrive desktop on Windows 8 before I upgrade to the final release version of Windows 8.1, where SkyDrive will be baked-into Win8.1, that will fix it. I am only trying to replicate the behaviour of Win8.1 Preview, which I installed on both my Win8Pro and Win8EnterpriseN machines previously, and both had the built-in SkyDrive folder located at the top of the navigation pane in File Explorer.

A:SkyDrive for Desktop on Win8 and Win8.1 Preview

Hello Lilsting,

SkyDrive is not as integrated in Windows 8 as it is in Windows 8.1.

Do you have Show Favorites checked in your navigation pane settings?
Favorites - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane in Windows 8
Do you have the SkyDrive desktop app installed in Windows 8? Windows 8.1 doesn't need this.
Hope this helps,

we are about to upgrade from IE9 to IE11. While testing we found a problem when opening our sharepoint 2010 site. At the bottom we get the following message:
"This webpage want to run "NameCtrlClass" which isn't compatible with Internet Explorers enhanced security features. if you trust this site, you can disable Enhanced Protected Mode for this site and allow the control to run."
You can choose between "Run control" oder "don't run". But the result stays: The message still pops up every time.
I searched the web and realized that the NameCtrlClass is used to display the availability of a person in sharepoint. As this feature is not used we disabled the NameCtrlClass through GPO. But its not helping either :(
Ah, we are using Office 2010, and the NameCtrlClass Version is 14.0.6109.5000. So we do not have the common error, that the NameCtrlClass wasn't updated while installing Office 2013.
Any ideas how we solve this problem?
Thanks a lot for every hint

A:IE11 - NameCtrl Class not compatible on Sharepoint 2010

It is unclear from your question whether the
"This webpage want to run "NameCtrlClass" which isn't compatible with Internet Explorers enhanced security features. if you trust this site, you can disable Enhanced Protected Mode for this site and allow the control to run."
occurs with IE9 or IE11.
you can try
1. File>Properties .... which IE security zone does the sharepoint site map to (expected Intranet).
2. Tools>Internet Options>Security tab, click "Reset all zones to default"
then Intranet sites icon, uncheck "Enable Protected Mode"... close all open IE windows and restart for the full changes to take affect.
3. Tools>Manage Addons>Show all addons..... locate NameCtrlClass in the list and double click on it to show its properties... also make sure that is enabled.
Please post back with your answers to my questions if your sharepoint site currently does not map to the Intranet zone.

I've been working on this all day. Yesterday, I installed the update (from the Java website, not through the updater in control panel) on two computers and homegroup stopped working. I did a system restore on both computers and homegroup started working. Then I updated Java again and homegroup stopped working.

I'm not sure though because I did some other things, but the one constant was that after the Java update each of my homegroup computers couldn't see the other. Leaving the homegroup left both of my computers still not seeing the new homegroup was then newly created. In other words I never got the "join" button.

If you installed this update and your homegroup stops working, please let me know. The homegroup troubleshooter is not able to resolve the problem. The network is still fine -- in other words "WORKGROUP" is happy and continues to share just fine.

The only way I could get my homegroup back was to do a system restore. I can do just about anything else, including using CCLeaner to clean the registry, but I only appear lose the homegroup when I install the Java update.

Still, I could be wrong. I'd like confirmation one way or another. This is 32 bit Java and I use Firefox if it makes any difference.

Make a restore point before testing. I'm done with it for now and I am not installing the update until it is known to be safe.

First off let me say I am not at all conversant with the workings of software.

we have bought a satellite for my wife as her last laptop just gave up the ghost. she is physically and mentally disabled due to brain tumours so her condition can vary from day to day.

We have found that she cannot use Win8 as the width of the avenues on the 4 corners of the screen are too narrow as when she attempts to bring the pad or the mouse down through the avenues her one hand is not steady enough . She also cannot retain memory .

It took her 18 months to learn of the "upgrade from XP to Win7 but with Win8 its just leading her to tears. She cannot send emails nor work out Skype on her new LTop

So we are now in floods of tears and realise that Microsoft must have a positive discrimination policy against disabled users.

Surely they must have thought this through and realised that many disabled people would not be able to use this new operating system "why have one click through when you can have five" seems to be the norm.

As most of the operations now require simultaneous operations something that a one handed and disabled person finds extremely difficult. but a twenty something quick witted able bodied person would find a doddle!

Perhaps they should allow disabled persons the option of win7 over win8. but that would mean admitting ... Read more

A:Win8 is not compatible for all people

At first I must say that I respect your opinion and I read your story very carefully. To be honest I don't think this is the right place for such discussion and maybe you should also post this on some Microsoft Win8 forum directly to read what other people think about it.

Fact is that technical development goes forward rapidly and software/ hardware manufacturers try to offer always something new and make own products more attractive for the market and us as consumers. Ok every of us is not happy with some new stuff but we cannot do much about it. You know it is something like ?take it or leave it?.

To be honest I prefer Win7 more than Win8 and I bought Toshiba machine that is fully supported for Win7 and I use my favourite OS on new piece of hardware.

So what else to say? Be cool and try to find some solution. Maybe you can find some older machine that works perfectly with Win7. For instance last month I bought older Satellite P300 in perfect condition for friend of mine and after Win7 installation everything is simply perfect.

A:Java has stopped working message when attempting to update

Hello Rolo, it is you.

Uninstall Java from control panel. You will have more success with this if instead you use Revo Uninstaller Free, and choose to uninstall java in advanced mode.

Then install it from the website.

1. I have two JSP files like "one.jsp" and "two.jsp"
2. I have two muti select boxes like ACCOUNTS and FUCNTIONS In one.jsp. These two multi select boxes are getting loaded from two.jsp by using the frame like below.
var lsCombo = parent.MainFrame.document.dataframe.accountSelectBoxName.options;
lsCombo[0] = new Option("key","value");
lsCombo[1] = new Option("key","value");

var lsCombo = parent.MainFrame.document.dataframe.fucntionSelectBoxName.options;
lsCombo[0] = new Option("key","value");
lsCombo[1] = new Option("key","value");

3. Now those two box values are loaded.
4. I am trying to retreive the option values using javascript like below,

fucntionSelectBoxName.options[0].value - Now I am able to retreive the value
accountSelectBoxName.options[0].value - Now I can't retreive the value and getting error like permission denied.

5. Here, I understood that, only lastly loaded frame is an active mode and which is pointing to respective parent frame.
But first loaded frames are not in an active mode and which are not pointing to respective parent frame.

Thanks in advance

Hello TSG,

Im using Microsoft Vista basic and I'm sure my PC has become infected. Its slower, programmes are becoming unresponsive at times and my Kaspersky internet security doesn't want to work. I uninstalled this and installed AVG but that had problems updating so I uninstalled and got Norton, again, doesnt want to update.

Also, when I opened up Internet explorer I would get a pop-up saying saying something didn't work (ssragent.exe or something) and then java would stop working. I would repeatedly get this message but for the past 1 hour it seems to have stopped.

I scanned my PC using the norton internet security 2009 trail (without the latest updates) and it only found a tracking coockie (low).

After reading the please read sticky, I got Hijack This and got the logfile:

I have a problem with a Java enabled website not “loading”. Here are the details.
I am using WIN7 Pro, IE11. I have both Java 32 bit and 64 bit, version 45 installed. The Java “test your installation” verifies the install is good, and there are no other Java versions installed.
I type the website URL and click enter.  The opening screen of the website briefly flashes and then I am redirected to the Oracle page:  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/index.html.
There are no “error” messages displayed or other hints as to why the website does not load. I cannot find any “help” information on the Oracle page.  I have enabled the IE tools setting to allow Java, but without any error message I am at a loss on where to look.
Any suggestion on why IE refuses to load the website and how to fix?
Additional information.  I also have Firefox installed and the website will load in Firefox ( after changing several settings) after “accepting” Java might harm my computer. So I know the website is capable of opening and the Java install is OK (at least for Firefox).

A:IE11 will not load a Java enabled website

This is the page you are visiting, I presume?

I've bought this modem cellular mentioned in the title (tp link ma 180) and tried to install it on a computer with windows 8 OS. I was able to install the driver and the software that controls the modem seem to work fine but when I try to connect to the internet it shows a yellow warning symbol and saya 'limited'.
So I checked to see if maybe it's a comatible problem and i saw that on the box it doesn't mentioned that it's compatible with WIN8 (just xp, vista and 7), but when I checked this link in German it says that it does support (in the end of the page, under the category of 3G modems).
So I wonder - A. Does anybody know if it compatible with WIN8? Should I believe what's written on the box or in the link above?
B. From what I've described above (driver and the software installed well and there's only a warning symbole) , does it sound like a compatible problem or is it different kind of problem?
Thanks in advance

This 64GB internal card was working fine on win8.0 Acer v5, laptop.

Tried four different SD cards, win8.1 could not see any.
I have checked with SFC and DISM no problems.
Hardware Diagnostic tool does not find the SD.
Updated drivers from Acer. No help.
Have Auto Play set to use for everything.
Tried 8GB and 32GB SD cards, nothing.
If I plug the SD cards into a USB adapter they all work fine.

This sucks big time as the SD is my daily back up drive.

Any help?

A:SD Card Gone after win8.0 update to win8.1

OK, problem solved. Win8.1 kept seeing the SD card slot and installing the "Standard SD card slot drivers.

Acer's Support for this model V5 showed the card reader as an Alcom or something close to that and I was pretty sure that was wrong. I reinstalled an older backup image of win8 and Device manager showed the SD card reader as Broadcom SD SCSI drivers.

I reinstated the win8.1 in place of the win8 backup and then I went back to the Acer V5 models then looked through until I found a card reader that had Broadcom drivers. Downloaded that and installed and all is well with the world again.

Who was at fault? Beats me, but the card reader is obviously telling win8.1 that it is just a vanilla slot. Acer got it wrong for not listing a Broadcom card reader driver with this model. On many of their models they list two or three different drivers, but for mine there was only one and it was the wrong one for what was actually in the laptop.

The original win8.0 worked fine as the Broadcom drives were installed at the Acer factory.

Win7 Pro 64-bit laptop-
Latest Java installed OK on IE11 from Control Panel GUI.

When I went to install non-ie 32-bit Java download from Filehippo (IE still Default browser), a Windows pop-up said IE needs to Reconfigure/Restart Now!?
Java had disappeared from IE, wasn't in FF either (showed in Uninstall Programs), but wouldn't reinstall/Reboot.
I uninstalled Java/reboot, and installed full 64-bit for IE- Showed in Add-ons as New, and I activated both.
2 reopens, and when I ran the Java Version check, it said Java was not installed?

Made FF Default, and Java installed OK/reboot.

I figured IE11 was corrupted, and I needed to uninstall/reinstall it-
When I went to Win updt hist., there was No IE11, but there was my old IE10?
Maybe I had upgraded to IE11, without first uninstalling IE10 (years ago)?
IE11 never was dependable, and would sometimes Stop Working (I used FF 99%).

Question?- How do I go about uninstalling IE11..., or any other suggestions?

A:IE11 corrupted during Java updates, uninstall issues...?

I'm confused here,
What are you downloading from Filehippo ?

ie10 has been discontinued I'm afraid and ie11 is all that's left,
If you have an issue with that use another browser

You can attempt a repair install,

A:[Java] New version of Java, Java 8 Update 51 has been released

If you have desktop programs which require java to run then the best thing you can do is disable it's browser functions, this can be done by the method described on the following page, that way java can still run for those who need it as an environment for their desktop programs, but it will not be vulnerable as a browser plugin.

Recently been paying alot of attention to my event viewer for system errors and noticed Java is saying it's not compatible with the version of windows i'm using, yet on their website it specifically says it is. Any ideas on where the conflict is...thanx.

A:Java not compatible

Look for assistance on event code identification: -

The "New Java" will require time for any event errors to be registerred against it.

Therefore please note: -

Time will be needed for them to be generated & registerred. Therefore assistance on them is/ will be limited.

You can download Microsoft's Java VM version 3810 from Microsoft at:

This is newer that what originally came with SP1.

If you need a previous version, you can download 3805:

So my copy of Firefox 2.0 just updated itself to automatically. It reloads, and it tells me it's disabled my Java console because version 6.0 apparently isn't compatible. So now I have no Java. Brilliant.

I don't want to downgrade because of the security issues, and you'd think anyway that the latest version of Firefox would be compatible with the latest version of Java .

Is this a known issue, or has something gone wacky with my installation? I'm surprised I haven't seen more complaints if the former is the case.

An Oracle Form is launched as a Java Applet in IE11. Ideally the user should not be aware of parent browser window but when the form launches another popup (eg adobe, MS office) window the parent window then comes to the foreground and hides the java applet
window - confusing for the user when they close the adobe or office application window!.  This is with regards to Windows 7.  With IE version 8 this was all worked ok and window behaviour was logical for the user.
