Solved: XP SP3 and plugin-container.exe issues with module ntdll.dll

Q: Solved: XP SP3 and plugin-container.exe issues with module ntdll.dll

Recently, I was given a laptop in which the OS environment is XP SP3. Since I started using the machine, there have been an untold number of problems that have occurred that seem to point to ntdll.dll {5.1.2600.5755 (xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234)} and plugin-container.exe. To help you all understand the situation, I use Firefox, not IE.

It doesn't seem to matter whether or not I've installed addins to my browser. The problem is most prevalent whenever I run streaming audio which requires the Flash plugin.

SCENARIO:

After ~ 30 minutes (the length of time is never consistent) of listening to streaming audio, the browser either hangs, or crashes...sometimes, I have to end the firefox.exe process via Task Manager. Here's an example of the details logged in Event Viewer-->Application:

I want to uninstall SP3, however, by doing so would cause system instability. There are ~131+ applications and tools that were installed by the previous owner who also installed the said service pack. With little knowledge in HW/SW architecture, I did not want to take any unecessary risks by uninstalling SP3 lest I render the laptop inoperable.

I have the XP SP2 OS installation disk which has ntdll.dll {5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)}. But, I feel that it is unwise to over-write the existing ntdll.dll with the one from the installation disk. I seriously doubt this would correct the problem(s) since all other system dlls are from XP SP3; and there would be major incompatibility issues between different dll versions.

In trying to find an alternate solution, I attempted to reformat the partition (the laptop only has 1 making it impossible to backup files I want to keep). However, when I tried to reformat the partition, I received messages informing me that I needed to stop the processes running in the background.

Next I tried to access the BIOS to reformat the partition, unfortunately, I do not remember the Administrator PW required to access the system configuration menu (this is another issue to be discussed under a different forum topic).

If anyone has any helpful advice or a good solution to rectify my problem(s) that I've described herein, please let me know. Your help is greatly appreciated.

hi...i know there's a way through firefox to disable the plugin container (plugin-container.exe in resources at the task manager) and keep it from gobbling up cpu resources, but i can't remember how to do it. i know you just type in something in the browser location bar and from there type in another short piece of text, and from there double-click a couple of items to take the plugin container out of contention for the cpu. does anyone here know what i need to type in at the browser location bar, and at the screen that firefox shows after that? i know what to double-click once i get there. thanks for all help.

A:[SOLVED] plugin container eating up cpu resources

Type about:config in the address bar and hit Enter.

Type dom.ipc.plugins.enabled in the Filter bar and you should see 4 entries appear as you're typing. Right-click each one of these entries and select Toggle to change their values from True to False, then restart Firefox.

(I've used this setting in Firefox 4 and 5... it works)

I'm running Lenovo 32-bit on Win XP and for awhile keep getting freezing and script issues with message
>>>>
"plugin-container.exe has encountered a problem needs to close....etc..."

I read that the Adobe Shockwave Flash(27.0.0.130) in Firefox(my browser) needs updating, then i read that in fact in you need to go into Mozilla Firefox ADD ON's and you should uncheck the box that shows
"Enabled Adobe Flash Protected".Basically disabling it.
So it can't be both options can it? So who is right on this and what should i do.
Or are there other reasons i am getting plug-incontainer exe issues?

So I'm using the latest version of Firefox and Flash player, and for some reason the plugin-container will lock up in certain situations.

If I play quake through quakelive.com and exit a match, at any time, the plugin locks up, have to open task manager and kill the process.

If I'm on youtube, foxnews, or any other place using flash for video, and navigate away from the site, or select a different video it locks up.

Now this only happens the first time I try to leave a page or exit a game. Once I kill the process and bring the page / game up it all runs perfectly fine no matter what video I click on, new page I go to, or play 10 - 20 games.

It happens no matter how much memory the plugin is using as well. it could be 15,000kb or 235,000kb.

Not really sure how to troubleshoot a problem like this, so any advice would be welcome.

I've got FF v.3.6.20 and with one tab open and the recent "plugin-container" running after a little flash player action, task manager says, between the two
they take approx. 80,000 K of RAM

Chrome v.13.0.782.112 m with one tab open is sucking up approx. 180,000 K of RAM. task mngr. also shows 5 processes named "chrome.exe"

after reading that, Chrome still loads as fast or faster than FF.

I'm not all up on what my browsers do with RAM and how/if that effects page-loading

Can someone please explain this to me?

Thanks

A:FF3 + plugin-container vs Chrome

With tabbed web browsers it's normal to have several instances of the browser running in processes. There's one for each open tab, but that does not in any way effect page-loading times. Google Chrome uses a different browser engine, and that's what makes the difference.

Firefox 3 is in any case well out of date now by several versions. The latest is v6.0 so you should consider updating it to enjoy the extra security and new features -- it's faster too.

If you upgraded your FF you may/may not have problems with it's plugin-container.exe. It apparently causes crashes/lock ups of FF on some systems, slowdowns on others.

I saw some reports associated with this file, which takes up (in some instances) an inordinate amount of RAM, thus causing the browser to lock up.

Some AV/Malware programs are registering it as Malware.

On a personal note, it really does bug me that the file REQUIRES internet access (*and there is no option to bypass or disable it). If you don't allow it, some sites that require flash just won't load.

Aside from that, no problems with the new browser.

How else do you expect it to get content that resides online then? To put it into perspective, when Firefox encounters a plugin required container (object, embed) in the HTML it diverts those off to plugin-container.exe to handle and download the necessary resources it supports. So of course it needs access to the internet. It would be no different denying Firefox internet access.

Hi,

Recently when I use Firefox to surf on the Internet, I always have like 5-6 tabs opened. After 5-10 minutes, the browser is running very slowly and sometimes at the top bar it says (Not Responding). It is like a performance drop, changing tabs is slow, scrolling down a page is slow. I check the Task Manager it uses like 1907.23 MB of Memory and it shows 99% of Memory used.

I always have to end the Firefox process and open it again and restore my last session. It always use 150-180 MB of Memory at the first minute. But the longer I keep Firefox open, even on Minimize, my computer slows down and again it use 99% of Memory so I have to end process again. This happens over and over again. And when I check my Crash Dumps folder, I saw a lot of plugin-container dump files.

So how do I solve this issue? It's not a big deal though but I want a solution.

EDIT: Firefox is my preferred browser, I don't really like Chrome and not to mention Internet Explorer.

A:Firefox plugin-container

First, make sure you have the latest version of Firefox ie. 38.01
Next, right click on the Title, and select Menu Bar. From the Menu, click on Help->Restart With Add-Ons disabled to see if you experience the same problem.

If the problem is gone then go to Tools->Menu->Add-ons and disable all the add-ons then re-enable one by one until you experience the same problem then you might have a bad add-on.

If the the problem still persist. Tools->Options and create a SYNC account and sign-in. This will save all your Bookmarks, Add-ons etc...
then uninstall Firefox completely.

Next, download and install Firefox again then sign in to SYNC to get back all bookmarks, add-ons etc...

i have finally found a real resort to removing this damn virus out of my system, but it will take you a whole day.
first off
These are the things you need to google.

AdwCleaner : Cleans the registry of the infection
CCleaner: Removes the Cookies and programs (use trial version pro)
Kaspersky (Anti-Virus) removes the virus infecting the pc
Malware Bytes: "As Described program to cover more basis to remove it"
then finally Junk Removal Tool.

But follow each program in these steps.
"Anti-virus: use first a latest virus protection program (Not Nortons: Back door into windows)"
CCleaner: Clean all your windows background applications and cache
Malware Bytes
Junk Removal Tool.

i should say your computer will be clean of this peice of s### infection.

but the process will yet again, take all day.

This has been a recurring problem with the 32-bit versions of Firefox that I've used in the past. I've now switched to the current 64-bit version (43.0) only to find that this problem is occurring.
I had been keeping the 32-bit version bug at bay using the user environment variable "MOZ_DISABLE_OOP_PLUGINS" but that no longer works for the 64-bit version. I've gone so far as to add "64" to the variable in several different ways but none of those worked.

Any suggestions on a fix or workaround for this?

Suggest: Clean install flash player.

Flash Player removal tool: https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player...r-windows.html

Make sure you follow all steps including step 3d

Delete:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
%appdata%\Adobe\Flash Player
%appdata%\Macromedia\Flash Player

Confirm deletion by attempting to navigate to the above folders once they have been deleted.

Important: Step 4.1
Restart your computer before fresh installing flash player.

Other stuff you can try:

Backup your profile (bookmarks and extensions)

MozBackup - Backup tool for Firefox and Thunderbird

Uninstall Firefox and delete leftovers:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...-your-computer

Include these steps:

   Note
To remove other files and folders that may not be removed by the uninstall, you must manually delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations by default:
32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

   Note
Pess the Windows key +R to open a Run dialog, type in %APPDATA%\Mozilla\ and click OK to open the Mozilla folder, then delete the Firefox folder.
Reboot. Clean install Firefox then restore your bookmarks and extensions from the Mozbackup file that you saved.

I have recently been having a problem where my cpu usage spikes anywhere from 25-50% every 10 seconds due to the WMIPrvSE.exe service. I tracked it using process explorer and it is obviously the problem in question. The red is tracking the WMIPrvSE.exe process.
I followed the tutorial found here How to get the cause of high CPU usage caused by apps? - MSFN Forum
to try and figure out what process within this WMIPrvSE.exe is causing the spikes. It appears that it is an ntdll.dll issue but I have no clue about how to remedy this.

The dump file from using xperf can be found here: latency zip

Using process explorer I found that the Thread ID is 3508 and starts at address: ntdll.dll!RtlDosSearchPath_Ustr+0x69a

A:ntdll.dll module causing CPU spikes

So the question is, what is calling WMI to scan the machine? The ntdll binary is just an API binary, and "does what it's told", so to speak. Given the binary causing the CPU work is wmiprvse (WMI provider engine), some process on the machine is calling into WMI to get information (which spawns a WMI provider to do the work). In looking at the xperf trace, it appears there could be a few culprits, but xperf is not the best tool for process parent tracing if you don't enable stackwalking of that data in the trace (which you didn't). It would be easier at this point to run Process Monitor to track back the process PID of the wmiprvse.exe that consumes the CPU to it's parent - it's *probably* a service, and I wouldn't be surprised if it ultimately walks you back to the HP ProtectTools on the machine (I do see hpqwmiex.exe running on this box), but it's hard to say with an xperf.

Sometimes when starting control panel, I get an error message saying that explorer.exe encountered a serious problem and shuts down. Following it is the Dr watson postmortem debugger's similar error and suddenly the desktop seems to stop working completely. This happens occasionally and most of the time, the desktop returns back to normal with an error saying that the shell stopped unexpectedly and explorer.exe was restarted. Whereas in other cases, I have to restart my computer.

Hi

The error appears to be caused by the AcroIEHelper.dll, which is a component of Adobe Reader. There may be other files involved though.

Did the start of the problem coincide with any hardware or software change such as installing or updating Adobe Reader or any other software?

Also, does the following help?:

IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > remove the checkmark in front of "Enable thirdparty browser extensions" > OK then restart IE.

If that does not help you can re-enable third partybrowser extensions.

If it does help, you would have to track down the third party browser extension causing the problem, which may the "Adobe PDF Link helper".

My computer has been running very slow for the last few weeks. It is especially slow when running firefox. When I run IE, I have a pop-up that comes up after about 5 minutes that says that the 'Skype IE Plugin Version 0.0.0.0.' has failed and then freezes the program, the pop-up also included a reference to this file: 'ntdll.dll'. Also I have noticed that a new yahoo! toolbar has been added to all of my broswers that I can't get rid of. This all started when I downloaded a FLV player a couple of weeks ago. A:Firefox crashing (plugin container for firefox has stopped working)

Go to Index page ? mozillaZine Forums ; on the right-side of the screen, in the search box for Boards, enter "plugin container crashes" (without the quotation marks) and read some of the threads, which may lead you to the solution.

My quick look at a few of those threads indicated that hardware acceleration may be the culprit; if you need help with that, do another search for that subject.

There was an amusing incident on mozillaZine recently concerning hardware acceleration: One person posted a vituperative message blaming the moderators for frequently suggesting turning off hardware acceleration on the grounds that doing that had never helped a single person.

The very next thread I read was from a person thanking the moderators: He had been told to try turning off hardware acceleration, he did so, and his problem was solved.

I have been unable to use my Xerox 7600i flatbed scanner due to an error message that reads "OneTouch 4.6 Component has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I contacted technical support via the software company Visioneer Inc. Tech support had me uninstall and reinstall the drivers and software. The problem continued. After reviewing the event log the tech advised me that the source of the problem was a faulty module path. Since the problem had nothing to do with the scanner software, hardware or driver the tech had to close the case.

The tech implied that I may have to reinstall the OS. Is there anything else I can do short of reinstalling the OS?

Thanks.

Hi, I've been using my Thinkpad w520 with windows 7 64 bit professional for more than a year without any major problem.

Recently, the Explorer.exe started crashing occasionally and randomly when I was switching back to a file browser ... The event viewer shows that all the crashes were related to the Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll. The entire message is shown below

Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.1.7601.17567, time stamp: 0x4d672ee4

Report Id: 0ba84f3a-d2d9-11e1-8333-f0def1579de1

I've done some research on google and found that the causes of the similar problem were very user specific, some was caused by faulty codec and others might be caused by antivirus, and it seems that there's no a general solution available.

I would be very grateful if someone could teach me how to export the crash/event as a dump file and let me know what's the culprit application that causes the crash.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and help!

A:Explorer.EXE random crashes with Faulting module name: ntdll.dll

Just now for some reason I could no longer right-click on my desktop or the recycle bin without explorer.exe crashing immediately with that same exception code. Since explorer.exe crashes are very often due to shell extensions, the first thing I tried was to disable the nvidia desktop context menu and it cured the problem (after explorer crashed one more time since the shell extension was still in memory). I have absolutely no idea what sequence of events caused this issue to suddenly happen, and maybe just rebooting would have fixed it because there was never a problem with the nvidia thing before.

I was having problems with too high physical memory usage(highest was 73%) causing my PC to respond slower even during winexplore. I started uninstalling unnecessary programs and disabling unnecessary processes, when I noticed that plugin-container.exe is taking up 23,xxx KB memory while firefox takes up 400,xxxKB. Is this normal? Is there any way I can tone Firefox down to further lessen my PC's physical memory usage? As of now, it's down to 36%.

I usually run either Fraps, Skyrim, or Azureus Vuze while using Firefox. Current active plugins for Firefox are:
Quicktime plugin
Java Platform

If clean install an OS reproduce the problem , it is a problem with something other than Windows. It could be HP driver or hardware.
If pssoble, try install Windows 8 in the same model as your PC and see if same issue happens, if the issue didn't reproduce, it is hardware issue.

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro. fully patched and updated.
I have a user who connects to several systems which require JRE on the local pc. Java version 1.8.0_77 was installed and working correctly.  The user has been successfully logging into the different systems without issue until last Thursday.  When
attempting to log in to a system that she doesn't use very often, she is told that she cannot continue because that system requires java version 1.7.0_?? to 1.8.0_51 to run.  I installed 1.8.0_51 and she tried again.  she still got the same error,
so I uninstalled 1.8.0_77 and she tried again.  This time the interface told her that no version of Java was installed.  I verified that, indeed, Java was installed, had her reboot and try again.  Same error.  So then I uninstalled 1.8.0_51,
and verified that the registry was clean of Java references, rebooted her computer and tried to reinstall the current version, build 77.  THIS time, the installation started normally, but when the "downloading java" screen popped up (the one
with the small green bar that goes across as it downloads), the window went away after about a second or maybe two, and nothing else happened.  A look at Task manager indicated that no installation routines were running.  A look at Programs and Features
in the control panel showed no installation of Java.  Testing with IE showed that Java wasn't installed either.  A look at the event... Read more

Videos utilizing the adobe flash plugin in firefox have two thirds of the video (starting from the bottom) overlayed with what appears to be the green and magenta colors of the top third of the video (there is a little bit of overlap) the top third of the video appears normal, maybe a little more blue than usual but for the most part normal.

Occurs in the live feeds of twitch.tv and youtube.com if I full screen the video in youtube it appears normal, but this does not happen on twitch.tv

Restarted system, no difference. Everything appears to be up-to-date.

Took my laptop to my university's tech support for a hardware display issue, received a new laptop frame (same HDD/Battery different everything else) though I don't think this is the problem. They also installed a display driver "Quadro Notebook Driver Release 295".

Any help would be much appreciated.

It used to work perfectly, but kept giving me that message every time I attempted to open it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything related to iTunes, but finally resorted to downloading the new version of iTunes, and seeing if that would work. Well of course, it didn't work, so I tried using Repair in the control panel, and repaired QuickTime to play it safe. QuickTime continues to work perfectly, but iTunes has yet to open. It does give me the details though -

How do I fix 'ntdll.dll'? It's not infected or anything.
I've already asked on the Apple forums, with no luck. I really need help with this.

A:"iTunes Has Stopped Working."? (Fault Module: ntdll.dll)

Its not ntdll.dll itself, it was ever iTunes is calling though ntdll.dll. Would need a deeper analysis to determine what.

I have Windows 7 on HP Pavilion Home Premium Desktop PC and I ue Orca browser. Everthing was fine until a few minutes ago when I shut down Orca. When I rebooted I got an idiotic dialogue box saying I should 'reinstall mozalloc.dll' and everything would be fine. What the oni is a 'mozalloc.dll' and where do I find it to reinstall it? I ran a Run serch for it and found zilch. Ditto for the Control Panel/Programs & Features andthe Downloads files. I have no idea what happened and I am very frustrated. Help me please! Thanksa lot- keimanzero in Brookhaven PA-USA

Hello,

I am in my second year of my Software Engineering BSc and was set this problem over the summer by one of my lecturers to either solve yourself or find out how to do it if you can't, so here I am ..

The problem I have been presented with is to create a program where the user can enter what cargo they wish to load into a container, it's size (i.e. width, length, height), and how many of that type of cargo there is. The user can then specify the size of the container they wish to put this cargo into. The application must then calculate if it is possible to fit all this cargo inside the container and if it fits, how to stack the cargo inside the container.

Now I have been doing this in C++ using QT as a frontend gui for the visualizing the whole thing as well as entering the data however there are so many variables that are in play that writing an function that does this successfully is prooving to be quite difficult and was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on how to solve this problem..

This is what I have so far:

I started by creating two structures to hold both the Container Details and the Details of each bit of cargo:
Code:
struct CargoDetails { //Structure to hold container details
std::string ContainerName;
double Width, Height, Length, Weight;
int NumAmount;
} AddedCargo[100];

struct ContainerDetails { //Structure to hold container details
std::string ContainerName;
double Width, Height, Length, Weight;
}SelectedCont... Read more
