Robocopy /purge or /mir

Q: Robocopy /purge or /mir

We are migrating our file server from Novell to Windows and I will be using Robocopy to do the copy. i know I cannot move the Novell rights so I have setup the folders (blank) on the destination ahead of time with the rights I want. I was going to just use the MIR switch to keep things in sync but read that MIR could overwrite the rights on the destinantion, is this true? I am not trying to do anything with rights and don't want any rights being assigned or changed.
Am I better off using /E /Purge or /MIR.....or would I be better off with a different program like RichCopy.
Thanks for the advise,

Preferred Solution: Robocopy /purge or /mir

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just run the robocopy with /purge  yesterday and connect few users to destination server.
/PURGE :: delete dest files/dirs that no longer exist in source.
i didn't realize the above and run again , thought of command will copy any changes to Destination.

Now how do restore the delete files?
Also how do i run just to copy anything has changed in Source without deleting?

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
This tutorial says that the /MIR flag may cause Robocopy to delete files on the Source:
Is that true? If it is true, presumably the same warning should apply to the /PURGE option?
Here's the relevant quote from that article:

Use the /MIR option with caution - it has the ability to delete a file from both the source and destination under certain conditions.
This typically occurs if a file/folder in the destination has been deleted, causing ROBOCOPY to mirror the source to the destination. The result is that the same files in the source folder are also deleted. To avoid this situation, never delete any files/folders
from the destination - delete them from the source, and then run the backup to mirror the destination to the source.
If in doubt, do not use the /MIR option, but be aware that backups will take longer.

I want to use Robocopy to do regular backups about 400 GB of media files. I want the external HD to replicate what's in my media folder on the internal HD. So, anything changed or added to the Source should be copied to the Destination, anything deleted
from Source should be deleted from Destination. I do not want Robocopy to delete anything from Source.
The backup will be run every few days, as media files on Source may be edited, added, deleted by me.

A:Robocopy: can MIR or PURGE delete files from Source ?

According to the documentation and some simple tests I ran today, the /MIR option does not erase anything from the source.  The tutorial mentioned above is just flat wrong.  Here's the truth, arrived at by typing "robocopy /?" at a command prompt:
 /MIR :: MIRror a directory tree (equivalent to /E plus /PURGE)
And further:
/E :: copy subdirectories, including Empty ones.
/PURGE :: delete dest files/dirs that no longer exist in source.
Don't take my word for it.  Sometimes these options change with different versions.  The only way to know for sure is to read the help, create your command, and do some tests.

Q: Purge

Hi everyone. Does anyone know anything about the program "Purge version" by Martin Preussner, which purports to clean up your hard drive? Here is a link to the description of it: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/File_Cleanup_Utilities/pURGE.html
I was wondering if it is any good, or if there is a better one out there.
Thanks in advance.

Only that it is remarkably similar to most other cleaning programs, "Empty Temp Folders" in particular, which is free:

Is there a way for a person to delete all (or more than one AT ONCE) links from Favorites, without having to delete each link (or folder) separately??

A:Purge Favorites?

Open up My Computer from your desktop.
Drive C/Documents and Settings.
Click on your user name if there is more than one user account set up on your computer. Open up the Favorites folder. Hold down the ctrl key while clicking on each entry you want to delete. After highlighting them, RIGHT click, choose delete.

I'm not sure what the Favorites folder would be under if there is only one user account on your computer, you'll have to root around for it. Or someone else can provide the info.

I recently went through a big infection of vundo.
So what is happening now is that I'll be watching a movie, not using the computer for anything. Then I'll start hearing the windows chime, the same one it uses for crashes or deleting a file that's in use, for example. But no message anywhere, just the tone. Then the computer BSODs, but there's no file listed, just a stop error and an address, "STOP 0x000000F4", then a group of similar number strings in parentheses.

When the computer reboots, my wallpaper has been replaced with a big YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED WITH SPYWARE, an alert going off over and over in the taskbar, and popup window telling me to purchase win protector or something like that.

Of course the virii won't allow me to run MalwareBytes or HJT. So I reboot into safe mode, run MBAM, and remove the files included in the attached log.

Problem is, this keeps happening. Something is reinfecting me, and MBAM and Avast aren't detecting it.

What should I do?

Thank you for reading, I'm getting a little desperate.

A:Resilient Vundo, can't purge it

UPDATE:Part of the way I can tell that the virus is going to BSOD is that a process appears in task manager that is always a string of numbers .exe, for example 1562363434.exe. Don't know if that is helpful information or not, but something is generating an .exe and running it.Hello evenhand,We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible.Thank you for understanding.Regards,The weatherman (Moderator)Ah, I apologize. A:Outlook Express purge

Yes. Possibly what is explained here in this article. Read it
but don't compact just yet. If you have already compacted the
emails, then you probably can't recover anything. But it is
worth a shot.

To recover emails DBXtract Macallan:

old freeware DBXtract

Were those 11,000 emails stored in separate custom folders?
If they were all in one folder, probably too many. Check the size
of the .dbx files - I keep mine at or below 25 MB others go up to
100MB without problems. Anything more and it could easily
cause problems.

It probably will not clear documents etc, but it should work with the browsing history.

As I said it is not tried by me, but it seems logical that it may work. You should try it several times. If the files are large it does not usually complete the job with a single try. Good luck

I installed Nero, which I like very much and can make the "quick CD-RWs" which will work but cannot format a disk in InCD on Nero. It appears that Roxio and Nero will not coexist. I have removed most traces of the Adaptec/Roxio programs but the InCD writer on Nero won't work. Nero says to disable the remaining driver files from Roxio "Cdr4_2k" and Cdralw2k" (I put an extension of .bak on them). When I do this neither my CD nor CD-RW drive will work and my device manager cannot find a suitable driver to activate the drives. So far, Nero has not been able to resolve the problem. Is there a way to safely purge all Adaptec/Roxio files? I notice there are still some registry entries attributed to Adaptec/Roxio but I am not comfortable fooling around with these.
Thanks much.

1.Is there a way I can set the deleted items to be erased after Xnumber of days?
2.Can I remove these deleted items as a bulk(more than one)?
Theonly way I know how to remove these items is highlighting 1 per itemand clicking Cntl-D.
PS: As stated above, I am using Outlook.com as my primary mail activity.the delete option there is working fine. When I first configured mylaptop, I sync my old Hotmail with the win 8 mail panel(frontscreen). It is here where I am having a bulk of deleted mail which Ican only purge manually. When I right click "deleted" namenothing happens. Is there a way to remove these deleted items inhotmail that exist on my front panel screen.

A:Auto purge mail from panel.

Hello, tomx2. Welcome back.

I'm fairly new to Outlook.com since I just changed from the Live.com, so please bear with me.

I don't see or know of any way to be erased after an x amount of days unless it can be performed online. Go to Outlook.com and sign in. Press the cog wheel next to your name. Select "More Mail Settings". There's a ton of them.

So far as deleting, right click an empty space and the bottom menu will slide up. Push "Select all" while in any folder or use Ctrl/A without the menu. Simply press another option or press Delete key to delete all. One needs to be careful, for there no longer exists a warning popup. Once they're deleted, they're gone.

Just to let you know, there's a "Rate and Review" option in Settings within the Charms Bar. One can make suggestions to improve the app such as your time deleting option. There's also Help under Settings as well.

Hope that helps.

I have NO idea what I did... can I just start over?

I have a laptop running XP HE. At home, I connect to the internet via a Linksys wireless nic -> Linksys WAP/Router -> Motorola cable modem. Setting up the home network was easy and it withstood all of my fiddling and tweaking without incident. Then, I brought my laptop to work, plugged the cat5 in, ran the network setup, etc.. and I had full access to the network and internet. Going back and forth between networks (wireless to hardwire & even using different wireless nics), everything worked fine for months. I tried to set my girlfriend up with a network similar to my home network, but things didn't work out quite as well this time. Now I can't connect to ANYTHING. I've tried every troubleshoot I know how to do, but my laptop will not talk to anything now... home, work, or otherwise. I suspect I changed a simple setting that I can't find now. I've tried setting up new connections and nothing is working. XP won't allow me to DELETE a connection, and it only shows me the connections that are plugged-in.

Short of re-format, is there any way I can purge all of my network settings and connections and start with a clean slate? Is there a better way?

XP crashes halfway through downloading 58mb of MS Updates. This happens whenever I connect the computer to my Alcatel SpeedTouch modem and try to fetch them all. It sometimes gets to 28mb+ and the screen goes blank, computer reboots and the download is neither partly downloaded nor partly installed.

I'd better explain a little deeper.

I've taken on the job of cleaning up a friend's computer (always a dangerous thing when you do favors). The machine had W32.Beagle virus and I did all the necessary - switched off System restore; ran to safe mode and scanned with Norton after doing an update.
Scanned again and it seemed to be clean.
I used a removal tool obtained from Symantec which scanned and said the system was clean. Then I tried to do a MS Update for all the Security patches and Critical updates. The owner had never done one in 2 years of use! There were 58mb of updates needed! This was just too many to fetch on a Dial-up home phone line. (Would be OK if you could just set it going all night but heaps of them need a reboot after installing which is a mega pain).

So to hitch it up to my own broadband ADSL line I installed my USB Alcatel SpeedTouch modem and got connected at 512kbps and started fetching the updates. It crashed after 28mb and lost the lot.
Every time I tried to start anything of a speedy download, it crashed at variable times into the job and now whenever I reboot or just start up the computer I get "Windows has recovered from a serious ... Read more

i would like some sane advice from competent individuals and i know for a fact that it is possible to clean this folder because ms used to have a program called msizap that could delete orphaned pacakges without damaging the installer directory.
i also know which programs will and will not be uninstalled and would be more than willing to clean the folder manually if there was some way to take the file names and figure out exactly what programs and updates they went with.
for now i would like to know if there is any NON COMERCIAL software that can do this eaisly and painlessly or if there i some way to figure out what the filenames for the MSP files mean so i can manually figure out if it is orphaned or not.

I'm trying to use robocopy to copy files and subdirectories from a zip drive to a hard drive and include the original modification dates using the /copyall attribute. By just copying it within Windows 7 professional every subdirectory shows up
with a current modification date. So when using /copyall I keep getting the error message "you do not have the manage auditing user right". Don't know what that means - right as in correct, or right as in permission. Either way, is
there some way to do this?

I am runing  window 7 32bit.  I run  robocopy to backup  files and dirs  ? I noticed lately that the process is coping files that are not subject to copy, ie the source and target files are exactly the same ? I use the /mir robocopy

When  roboopy copies a file from the source to the target, it will tag the copy in the log, ie ?newer? ?new files? ?older?   - etc ? in this case there is no tag on the copy log  and the summary at the end of the job reports all the source
being copied.

I have windows 7 on other computer and this  operation works  correctly on those computers  ? the only difference were this is not working it seems that version of windows 7 has fix  KB2639043 installed.

I went  as far as to write a program to show the 64 bit time stamp (both the modified and create times) and an compare them  on the source and target files and they are EXACTLY the same (the file size is also the same in both files)

Lastly, I tried ?synctoy? and that ?did the right thing? ? so there is some sort of bug with robocopy  ? How can I report this issue?

Hi, I have 2 questions which I desperately need help with. Here's the question: 1. robocopy shoud Run in a separate terminal window and recheck file system changes every minute. 2. write a continous logfile that contains all detected file system changes including full pathnames of affected files. How do I do this?

A:Robocopy (help please)

This is one way, put this in a batch file:

robocopy command here
timeout 120 > nul
goto Start

Lots and lots of robocopy parameters, one of which is /log:file (file being the file you want info logged ion). > nul hides the Timeout in n seconds message.

I am reporting a bug with the program robocopy.  My system is Windows 7 32bit.
The bug was introduced when hotfix kb3125574 was applied.

The bug seems to be that now, robocopy, is using the "access time" of the source
file to determine if the file is to be copied to the target.

Every copy that is executed by robocopy in annotated in the robocopy log with
the tag "new file" "newer" "older" "changed" ... etc.  With this bug, the copy
is noted in the log, but the tag (field) is blank

I was able to duplicate this, the console session is attached.

This bug has rendered robocopy useless.

I have created a robocopy.bat as below :

robocopy C:\Users\Faust_000\Documents\Alfredo "F:\Backups Documents" /e /mir /z /np /tee /log:Alfredo_log.txt

and I have created a Planned Activity into the Planning Utility to run at certain time every day.

Now my question is :
1. if manually activeted by double click robocopy.bat it perfectly works and the log.tx file is created
2. if I execute the robocopy by the Planned Activity (by manually Excute or automatically at the planned time) the robocopy is done correctly but the log.txt file is not created or updated.

I did both on W7 Professional 64bit and on W8.1 64bit but no difference.
Could someone help me to understand why the difference of results manually and via Planned Activity ?
Thank in advance.

I don't use Robocopy or Planned Activity but it might perhaps be related to the current directory when the bat file is executed. If so, the other log file should be somewhere on your system and you could search for it.

I mean when you manually run the bat file you get a certain "current directory", but in the other scenario you get another directory. You can try to include a path for the log parameter or move to a certain directory with the cd command in the bat file, before the robocopy command.

We are looking to migrate a SQL database to a new server. The database is for an imaging software and has pointers to the images. We are going to move the database in the next week or two. I wanted to start copying the image files to the new server to prepare for the migration (about 300 gig of 17k files). I understand that robocopy is a good program to accomplish this. I am looking to copy all the files, folders, and subfolders over, then copy only the changes over nightly. What is the correct command line that I should use to accomplish this? Can I save it to a bat file and use windows task scheduler to have it run nightly?

Thanks in advance for all of the help!

Are you migrating to a server that will be running the same software? Why not use an SSIS package? That way, you can migrate the complete database to the new server and just point your programs as necessary.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium and somebody recently mentioned to me about Robocopy to use from cmd. Unfortunately I got into a mess and cmd froze so that I had to force shut down.

Can somebody kindly let me know how to use robocopy to copy files and directories my document on C: drive into external hard drive J: in a simple language as possible.

Thank you very mcuh.

This is how robocopy is used:

That being said, I would like to mention that in several years of helping out at the Vista Forum, this is the first question about robocopy. Most members use Macrium Reflect to make monthly backups. These backups are always available in the event of a catastrophe with the OS. It can also be used to transfer to another drive.

Hi there,

I want to use ROBOCOPY to move any file that is older than 30 days.
I've tried this command but it seems to move the file anyway, even though the file is only 4 days old:

robocopy * C:\b2d C:\archive /mov /minage: 01-04-2011

From "/minage: 01-04-2011" i thought it would only move files that are at least 30 days or more old. But this seems to move everything.

Can anybody explain why this is happening? Is it because i used a wildcard on files, will that not look at the file age?
