System Hang Keyboard, Mouse Dead

Q: System Hang Keyboard, Mouse Dead

Guys I need help in this matter

My machine hangs suddenly when I work or download something, that too very frequently. My keyboard and mouse go dead they don't respond to any of my commands. I even tried upgrading my drivers using Uniblue Driver Scanner and updated but it is still giving me the same problem. Here is my System Config

80 GB Hard disk
1.23 GB RAM
Pentium[R] D CPU 2.80GHz
Microsoft Windows XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 2

This is my system config. And one more thing I even installed an Anti-Crash Software even with that my system just hangs

Please help me in this matter

Waiting for your reply

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello there, my friend's pc recently got this problem with
his keyboard and mouse hang, or maybe the system. Each
time when he restarted the pc when these froze happens,
there aren't any display on the monitor.. he needs to shut down
and wait for a while then turn on and only the display appears
on his monitor. I'm not sure whether is this because of the
hardware's problem or probably infected with viruses.. I scan

I am new to this forum. I have a HP dx2200 desktop with Windows XP SP3. Two weeks ago the problem starts. For the first time mouse and keyboard will get freeze for some time and will be fine soon. Later when the mouse connect then both will get struck. Now i tried to repair, but couldn't; so i formatted the PC and still now the problem exists. Now i connected the old IBM ball mouse, and is working fine. But i can not connect the Ps2 optical scroll mouse. Even USB ports also not working fine on my system.

Expecting a good reply.

Go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any devices with yellow flags? If so, these devices need to have drivers installed. Regardless, download the Chipset driver from the HP site and any other drivers that are required in Device Manager.

So I've been having this problem for about two weeks now.  I don't think I've noticed this before and I am not sure what is causing it. First off let me put in the specs for my computer I'm running - HP Pavilion HPE h8-1070t CTO Desktop PC with Windows 7 64bit.  I'm having issues with my umb mouse and keyboard.  They work on my laptop without error.  I'm also using a USB wired headset... I'm throwing this in because it might help in trying to figure out whats going on.  The problem happens when I'm running a gaming program.  I can't exactly say when it happens because it seems random, but when it happens, my mouse and keyboard stop working.  The computer runs smoothly and all processes seem to run normally.  I sometimes run firefox as well using pandora, and pandora still runs when this happens... thus nothing is stalling besides my keyboard and mouse.  In addition, my USB headset still responds (although I use a push to talk key from the keyboard, so I can't talk on the headset).  Just some additional information.  When I unplug my keyboard / mouse.  I would typically hear the sound telling my that it was unplugged.  When this bug happens, I don't hear any sounds of that sort when I unplug / plug in my USB devices.  All other sounds are running though (such as pandora, game sounds, etc).  Let me know if you have any solutions. Thank youPeter

Fantastic, I have been running wn2k with no down time 4 a year and just when I need most, silly me decides to find out why some of those extra "helpful" net/media buttons on my cheap keyboard by asking 2K for the appropriate driver.

It warns me but I say OK and restart and POOF! no mouse or keyboard. Locked out. No kersor and I cant even press caps locked to show lite. (both work fine in my 2nd partition under 98)

The driver I picked was just the Micsoft enhanced (similar) kB I think.

Have tried Safe mode, Last Settings saved, Nope!

Tried dif keyboard, as you do, and no change.

Have read a couple of dif posts some saying remove Bios Battery for 5mins, others saying boot in DOS and bla bla...Im no good in DOS. (willing to keep trying)

Alot of the posts also say Logitec mouse was problem but dont have 1.

Can anyone direct me to something they may remember in this field.

Or can someone explain how I might fix using 98???????

Much appriciated, urgent work to finish.

Hello. Thanks in advance for your expertise.

Recently my mouse and keyboard have stopped working. I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition on a Dell Dimension machine. When I reboot the machine (using the button on the PC) it loads up and gets me to the user selection screen but I can't do anything at all. Here are a few notes that should help:

I have tried hooking up multiple keyboards and mouses. None work (so I know it's not an issue with them as they work fine on my laptop)
I only have USB connections, no PS2 connections on my PC at all so I can't try a PS2 Mouse or Keyboard
I have tried ONLY plugging in the mouse or ONLY the keyboard and neither work
The Optical mouse lights up for about ten seconds then turns off if I unplug it and plug it back in. Even with the optical light on, the mouse doesn't move on the screen.
While loading, at the Dell screen where it says "Press F2 to enter Setup" the keyboard still doesn't work. So I can't get into BIOS nor can I start the machine in safe mode.

So here are my questions:

What do I do about this?
Can I install either new USB inputs or PS2 inputs without being able to use a mouse or keyboard or even load Windows (can't get past user/login screen)?
If I need to reload Windows, how do I get the data off of my harddrive?

THanks again,

A:Dead Mouse and Keyboard - help

Reset the Bios from the Motherboard

Power cord out
Hold in the ON button for 30 secs, dispersing internal power
Side cover off (who knows, some of the Dell's are hard to work this simple part out)
Take out (remove) the button battery (there's a small clip top side)
Locate the reset jumper, and move it to pins 2 and 3 (it's probably in pins 1 and 2 at the moment)
Wait 10 secs (no need really, but good time to rest )

Then put the jumper back (ie to pins 1 and 2)
Put the cmos round button battery back in
Put the power cord back in (and everything else)

I have a problem. Its all fine during POST, no "keyboard not detected" msg

appearing, but I cant press delete or any other keys to get into BIOS setup.

Keyboard's "Num Lock" lights do not flash. Windows will load but both the keyboard and mouse is dead. Tried other keyboard with the same result. tried the keyboard on another PC - works fine.

Previously the windows had a pci.sys error - "pci.sys not found." ive transported the HD to another PC and reformats the HD, and installs a fresh WINXP on it. Windows now loads fine on the new and old PC, but keyboard and mouse is dead on the old PC.

Have a USB adapter for keyboard but same result. tried the USB ports, both 2 ports on back of PC, and 2 other ports on casing (front). So i guess shouldnt be a problem with the ports, because ive just changed the casing to new and the front ports are fresh, never been used.

System details:
AMD duron 750MHz
mobo EPOX EP-8KTA2
PS2 keyboard with USB adapter.
ps2 mouse.

some guy suggested flashing the BIOS, but i do know how to that when i cant get my keyboard and mouse to work.

maybe, and just maybe, my PS2 keyboard and PS2 mouse ports are broken and the USB keyboard setting in BIOS is not enabled. then how?

any takers?

I just installed Fedora core on the computer I built a few months ago. I did not try to boot into windows. The next day, I completely redid my room and moved my computer onto another wall. I booted it the day after and none of the inputs (PS/2, USB, FireWire) worked.
I pushed the power button, It started booting. It asked if I wanted to boot into windows or linux, I pushed the down arrow on my keyboard and nothing happened. Uh-Oh. It booted Windows by default and brought me to the Welcome screen. I looked at my mouse and was relieved to see its LED turn on. I clicked on my account, and logged in. (Thank God I don't have a password). I found that the keyboard still didn't work.
I looked on the back of the computer and saw that I was using a PS/2 keyboard. I proceded to plug in a USB keyboard, and it still didn't work. I unplugged the mouse and put the keyboard in its place. It still didn't work. I put the mouse back in, and the LED didn't come on.
I reset and put the keyboard in place of the mouse. I could then select options on the boot manager, but my mouse didn't work, and as soon as I unplugged the keyboard, the USB port stopped responding.

I have never, ever seen anything like this before. I tried cleaning the dust out of my computer (not much, I've only had it for about 3 months or so), and I still have the same problem. It sounds a little like a short, but even the ports in the PCI cards I have don't work. What's especially weird is that the monitor is working thr... Read more

Other than checking the power source (ie have you tripped your circuit breaker)
It sounds as though the power supply unit inside your PC has died

One last option unplug the power cable
hold the PC power button in for 20 secs

Replg the power cord (firmly) in

A friend has a Gateway PC approx 5 yrs old running XP Home. It doesn't have any PS/2 ports or serial ports. It came with a keyboard where the USB mouse plugged into the USB keyboard.

When the computer is booted the keyboard & mouse are recognized. I can get into bios and the keyboard works. If I go to the safemode options screen the keyboard works to select options. If I boot from a CD the keyboard works to select options. But if I boot into safe mode (or any other available options) the keyboard and mouse are both dead at the login screen. I tried booting (from this same options screen) to a previous configuration that worked, but still no luck. Gateway tech support told him it's likely the motherboard and tried to sell him one for $400. I'm thinking drivers (maybe a virus...?) but can't get into windows without the keyboard & mouse. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Pressed start/stop again and rebooted. Went through win login OK, desktop arrives, half way through startup keyboard and mouse go dead.
Tried different mouse, rebooted etc. same again.
Where do I go from here please?

Hello all,

The problem started when I rebooted my computer to install some software to let me access the college's wi-fi. When my computer turned back on I had absolutely no control from the built in keyboard or mouse (I am using a lenovo x60s on Vista Ultimate with the red button mouse). The only way I am able to use my computer (which otherwise works just fine btw) is by plugging in an external mouse and keyboard into the USB. I have uninstalled all of my college's software so I don't think that is the problem. WHAT SHOULD I DO, MIDTERMS ARE COMING UP!!!!!

I have an HP Pavilion Notebook running XP Home SP2. It boots ok and windows starts ok to the desktop but then both the mouse and keyboard are dead. I've tried booting from the OS disk and the keyboard works fine using the recovery console. I've tried a safe boot, last good config option, a usb mouse and I have an HP docking station for this notebook using an Ir mouse and keyboard and they won't work either. I've read other similar posts here but no help from those solutions. If I have to reload the OS, I could use help on saving the data. Can you tell me what the default mouse and keyboard driver filenames are and the command line to expand them from the OS recovery disk? Any Suggestions?

One day when i turned on my inspiron 530 computer from DELL (Windows Vista), the computer was telling me that something was very wrong with my computer. Before "Setup", it was saying that with my permission it would set itself back in time to a time when it was working properly. I didnt see any sign of error prior to this so i said no, and did so for the next few days. Then one day, i said yes. The computer was working well for the rest of the day.

The next day, i turned on the computer and the Monitor has no signal from the mother-board, the mouse was dead and so was the keybord. The fans in the box were spinning very fast and very loud. There were lights on in the mother-board and there seemes to be an alarm going off inside the box.

My questions are what happened and what can i do?

I have a really strange problem, after a while (1-2 minutes) Windows just seems to freeze, the monitor signal dies and so does the keyboard and mouse. This seems to be pretty much random and does not occur at a specific time. Safe mode works well without the problem. This problem occurs both during the installation and on the installed OS. I managed to install Windows using safe mode (multiple times). I have been running XP and Linux on the same machine for a long time without any problems.

I have tried to install it multiple (allot) times, using different CDs and USB memory, same result. Even different isos. The iso I'm using is from MSDNAA and it's CRC checked. I have removed all "extra" hardware, disabled BIOS integrated hardware and usb stuff. No luck. I only have 1 monitor connected so it's not a multiple monitor problem, even tried booth DVI connectors. Have installed all the latest updates and tried different nvidia drivers.

Hi Zodox
Please check if you have BSOD .dmp files. There are some users in this forum that are very good at analyzing them and tell what is happening. I would have guessed it is a driver problem (given the normal operation in safe mode), but you already said you updated them all. Have you used the Win7 x64 drivers?
Also, if you can load your system specs in your profile, that permits other users to accesss them directly, without having to refer to your Original Post. You can just click on "My system specs" on the left lower corner

I was cleaning and moving my pc, during which I disconnected many of the wires and cables to the pc. Now, for some reason, my mouse and keyboard don't work when I log into Media Center. I have two operating systems on my computer, the media center XP on one hard drive and XP Pro on another. The mouse and keyboard work fine in the XP Pro, and they work fine while selecting which operating system to use, but as soon as I log into Media Center, the indicator lights on both of them go out, and they stop working entirely. They are both connected via USB, but I've also tried connecting them both with a PS2 connection, and there is no change. The odd thing is that I don't even recieve any message that says there is no mouse or no keyboard connected, and unplugging and then plugging them in again also does nothing. I tried starting in safe-mode and from the last known good configuration, but neither of those has worked. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Happens every few weeks on a new Toshiba laptop that came with Vista. Screen is blank, keyboard and mouse and start button dead. Only solution is to power down by removing battery. Anyone else seeing this?

A:Vista hangs, screen, keyboard, and mouse dead

Read other 8 answers

Yes I know this problem has been raised before and I have looked at and implemented as many of the solutions as I can find including ones from MSOFT
I use my PC as a media centre so going in and out of Hibernation is the norm. So far the only solution that always works is to unplug and replug the dongle.

To summarise what I have tried,
I've switched all the save power options off,
done all the suggestions in USB mouse unresponsive after hibernate mode
Tried using DEVCON to restart the hubs, tried using Devcon to restart the actual Keyboard and mouse,
I've even tried rebooting after a resume from hibernate but even that only works sometimes.

Some of the Devcon restarts etc require a reboot anyway so I'm not totally happy with that as a solution.

If there is no valid solution does anyone know a way to make the computer do a restart rather than a resume when it's coming back from hibernate as I suspect the USB hubs need a complete flush out.

The Msoft sites suggest that the problem doesn't go away with Windows 8, does anyone know if 8 does fix this as I have a licence. 10's not an option as there is no Media Centre available.

Any help will be appreciated

A:Dead Keyboard and Mouse Immediately after installing PS3 PC controller driver

Why not use system restore to roll back your system to before you tried to install the PS3 controller drivers? It's pretty obvious that something went wrong with the install. I haven't looked lately but last time I checked there were no offical PS3 controller drivers. The one that is floating around is a hacked driver and results may vary. The Xbox 360 controller does have an offical driver from Microsoft.

Greetings! New to the forum and I hope some of you can help. I've been reading up on my problem in various places on the internet for a couple weeks now and still have no resolution.

I'm using Windows 7. The issue I am having is that, intermittently but often when the mouse is in use, my mouse will hang, its lights will turn off, the computer will make the USB device disconnected sound, and it appears to reinstall the mouse device drivers. The system hangs for a couple seconds during this process. A few seconds later, the mouse is back to working again.

In my Device Manager, I currently have 3 copies of "HID-compliant consumer control device," 8 copies of "HID-compliant device," 4 copies of "USB Input Device," two copies of my mouse's named drivers, and one copy of my keyboard's named drivers. These all can be uninstalled but will be reinstalled at the next error.

For clarity: when the error happens and I'm viewing the Device Manager at the time, both the named mouse drivers for my one mouse disappear, a number of extra drivers of "HID-compliant device" appear with the yellow triangles indicating that there is something wrong with them, and when the system is responsive again, the extras created during the error go away, and two copies of the mouse driver reappear.

There were zero recent system software or hardware changes when the problem first appeared. I am using a new mouse (replaced the old one to test ... Read more

I am unable to troubleshoot this problem. So may be someone can help me here. I have following devices

1. Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 (it is wireless mouse)
2. Logitech cordless Keyboard, Model # Y-RC14 (again wireless kboard)

The version of Vista is Home Premium 64 bit . I connect both the devices to USB ports of my laptop (HP Pavalion dv5). When system boots everything works fine. When I go to school, I disconnect the devices and I hibernate the system. When I come back to home, I power on the system and it works fine. But when I re-connect the devices, system freezes. I am trying to troubleshoot which of the two devices causes this. Today I found that when I connect mouse, it works perfectly, but when I connect the keyboard after that the system froze.

The Logitech website tells that the driver in Vista is sufficient.

These devices used to work fine on my older Dell laptop with Windows XP home.

Any suggestions?

I have a Dell 5100 which is approximately 2 years old. When I switch on the mains supply there is usually a brief activation ( sounds like hard disk or fans ) & when I subsequently press the button on the front of the case the system starts up. At the moment this is not happening. There is no light showing on the keyboard, the red light that shines out from the base of the mouse does not appear. The power light shows amber on the monitor and pressing the button furthest left results in message "In power save mode, press any key on keyboard or move mouse".
So far I have tried removing all connections & powering up. I have also checked for loose boards & connections inside the case. Any ideas? Is this most likely to be a hardware problem?

This is a long shot but have you tried slowing your hardware acceleration down a bit. Go to start/settings/system click the performace tab then graphics
and try lowering you acceleration down to minimum click ok then ok again. If that solves your problem then go back and start increasing your acceleration a little at a time to find what is acceptable.

I'm having big problems booting my Windows 8 system. When I first boot in the morning, the keyboard and mouse do not work either on the boot screen or once the system has finished booting. However, the system appears to be running normally except that I can't interact with it. After a few reboot attempts the keyboard/mouse do work and the system is then useable. I did originally have the same problem when I installed Windows 8 some weeks ago, but it disappeared and now has come back. I'm concerned that eventually I will not be able to reboot at all with a working keyboard/mouse.

The system is dual boot with Windows 8 on one disk and Windows 7 on the other. The keyboard/mouse are wireless usb, but a PS2 mouse does not work either. Also the wireless keyboard always works OK in BIOS setup.

I cannot find anything anything relevant in the event logs. Can anyone suggest what I can do to further investigate?

A:No mouse or keyboard when system is booted

Rebooting this morning many many times I just couldn't get a working mouse/keyboard at all.

Eventually I decided to boot my Windows 8 installation disk and go from there. Disaster - the BIOS would not boot the DVD drive - the Windows 8 boot screen from the disk drive always came up. I know the DVD drive is working, and I've booted from it many times. This has to be the motherboard - the Windows 8 installation doesn't mess with the BIOS, does it?

Eventually as I was trying everything I could think of, I got a working mouse (at about the 30th boot attempt). For the moment I have a usable system and won't shutdown (until there's a power failure).

I'm now almost certain I've a motherboard problem. Can anyone think of any other possibility?

If anyone has any comments or suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

I forgot where the setting is to allow the system to wake up upon hitting any key or moving the mouse. I looked under bios but don't see anywhere that I can change the setting to do this. I used to be able to get out of hibernation just by moving the mouse and keyboard. Can someone refresh my memory? Thanks

First off, let me just say I don't know if this is posted in the right spot, so if it isn't, it would great if a Mod can move it.

So anyways, my computer has been having these problems since yesterday. The entire computer would completely freeze, and I would have no mouse or keyboard control. If I have music in the background, that stops playing, or just loops the same 10 seconds over and over.

I've opened up the side and made sure nothing was lose, cleaned out the dust that was in it. Ran a few scans (Spyware Doctor, Ad-Aware, Trend Micro, Norton, Uniblue SpyEraser that have found nothing. Ran Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC and Registry Booster which didn't solve the problem either.

The components in my computer include:

Intel C2D E6600 @ 2.4GHz (Stock)
2 GB Mushkin Dual Channel RAM
BFG GeForce 7900 GS
700W OCZ GameXStream PSU
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE

And it's running Windows XP SP3 32-Bit (this problem started before I installed SP3)

Any help is appreciated,

*I'll post a HiJackThis log as soon as I can.

Hey! Okay so this morning I used System Restore to restore my pc to a previous date. It restarted and updated, then when I turned on my pc it started up normally and went to the log-in screen. Except both the keyboard and mouse weren't functioning. I read some other forums and posts about this, but it seemed other people who had this problem were able to use the kb/mouse during safe mode. I can't use them in either normal nor safe mode, so I can't even log-in. I have a Dell desktop pc, any ideas on how to fix this?

Hi People,

I have assembled a PC with below configuration.
Intel Desktop Board DH67VR Media Series,
Intel Core i3 processor -2100 LGA 1155
4GB Ram,
USB Keyboard,
USB Mouse

Earlier I was facing problem in OS installation when using USB keyboard and Mouse. But with support from "Tech Support Forum" I was able install OS.

But now I am facing one more problem. Occasionally my system hang after log-in to OS. Mouse and Key board is not functioning (no movement in mouse and no response for any key press). To make my PC work I have to restart it again.

Please help me to sort out the problem... Thanks in Advance...

A:System Hangs on StartUp-Using USB Keyboard and Mouse

Press F8 at bootup get to the Advanced Boot Menu choose Safe Mode. Does this behavior happen there? Go to Start/Run and type chkdsk C: /R and press enter. Now type a Y and reboot the computer. the Check Disk utility will run at next boot up and try and fix any file errors. Also download the ISO image for Drive Fitness Test in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature. And boot off of the newly created CD and run the short and extended tests on the HDD.

Hello from a newbie !!
I just hope someone can help me, I have been having problems with getting my son's Compaq computer to go on-line after service pack 3 had been installed, in device manager it stated that the drivers for the ethernet board were missing, this board was installed in the computer when we got it secondhand and therefore we didn't get any ethernet related disc's with it. I decided, proberbly incorrectly, to re-set the computer to an earlier time before the service pack had been installed as everything was working fine then.
After doing the System restore I now find that the wireless keyboard and mouse will not work at all, I then changed them for a new usb keyboard and a new usb mouse, still the same problem, the cursor will not move on the screen neither will anything happen when pressing any of the keyboard keys, I cannot communicate with the computer at all !!!
Would any of you kind, knowlagable folk please be able to help me to try to resolve this problem.
I cannot understand why the mouse will not work, there is a message that tells me the mouse and keyboard are recognised so it knows they are connected, they will just not do anything.
PLEASE HELP if you can.
Many thanks for taking the time to read all this gibberish.
Regards to all, John.

A:keyboard and mouse not working after system restore

See if you can get to the 'Safe Mode' screen by continually pressing and releasing the F8 key as soon as you switch the PC on.

If you can and the keys work select 'Safe Mode' (should be the default) then select 'System Restore' option on the next message and undo that last Restore.

If that's not possible because the keys won't work tell us at what stage the keys stopped working, also at what stage do you see the message that 'sees' the mouse and keyboard ?

Can you get into the Bios ? do the keys work in the Bios ?

Hey swesan, Both your Keyboard and mouse are usb ? dvd drive is external, or internal ? have you tried using different ports to connect your peripherals ?
Usually when all usb ports stop working that indicates a slow death of the onboard usb controller, that also usually indicates the imminent death of the motherboard, if your devices are USB, try using a PS2 mouse to transfer your data,

Hello everyone,

While I was in the middle of using my system, all of a sudden the mouse and keyboard stopped working. I had no choice but to press the switch button to shut it down. I removed the battery, the power cable and all the input devices (Keyboard and mouse). After replacing them back I switched the machine ON, and I could see the flashing light on the Keybard, and the mouse light also ON (red). The memory count starts to the end, on a black screen, and then followed by the blue box at the bottom left of the screen where written "F1: Save Changes".

But I can't get rid of it this time because the Keyboard doesn't function/respond.

Machine Desktop HP 7100 CMT, Win7 ultimate 32bit, IE11, HP Keyboard PS/2, HP mouse PS/2.

I removed the HD into another machine, it works without any problem. Therefore, the problem seems NOt on the HDD side. All the keyboard and mouse work properly on other machines.

I changed the Keyboard to USB but the same result. I removed all the memory modules of 4GB in total, and replaced them with just one stick of 1GB, again no change, still can't move past the black screen to record the change, or to advance to Windows, or to access into BIOS setup.

I did this with and without HDD connected, but with the same result. I inserted the Installation disc into the DVD Drive for repair or recovery, it didn't make sense because it required the command "F1: Save Changes" must first be accomplished. But it doesn't go beyond t... Read more

I'm stumped as well as normally I would suggest plugging in a PS/2 keyboard... Have you tried waiting to see if the message times out?

When you removed the battery, did you also press the power switch for 4-5 seconds to ensure that everything was powered down?
