XPS 15 Scanning and Repair Issue

Q: XPS 15 Scanning and Repair Issue

Due to my XPS 15 running extremely slow I was advised to run Scanning and Repair during boot up. The problem now is that the scanning and repair drive has reach 59% after an hour and is not moving any further forward.
Can anyone advise what I do next?

Preferred Solution: XPS 15 Scanning and Repair Issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The issue is simply everytime I've used Etrust virus scan when in Internet explorer (have to be) I minimize it, and when I bring it to normal it's fine, but minimize it and bring it up when it's in the Java folder it freezes, should I do an individual scan on the Java folder to see if it has viruses or just make it a special do not scan folder and un-click it when scanning?

A:Solved: Etrust Viruscan does not like Java Program folder: not virus issue but scanning issue

Hi, Often the applets stored from Java usage will trigger either a detection or an issue as you are seeing from antivirus scanners.

I'd suggest clearing the Java cache: see the attached screenshot, your version may be slightly different but you should be able to see where to look, and what to do. (The attached pic is from a slightly older version of the Java...the steps below are up to date, though)

Control Panel> (Switch to Classic View)> open Java

Find the Settings tab/button, and open that...then find the Delete Files button and click that.
It's just deleting the temporary files left from Java applet usage.

Then, after clearing the cache, run your scan again and see if it works correctly.

Hello, this is my first post ... I have been recovering from a maleware attack very nicely, but everytime I try to run MBAM, SpyBot, or Avira the BSOD appears with and iastor.sys driver error. While watching MBAM scan, i noticed a simple photo's file it froze on and gave me the BSOD. Wondering if I could delete the folder of photo's I didn't need I downloaded a simple wipe program to see if I could clean the folder, that froze. After thinking awhile I decided to run chkdsk c: /r, which began at reboot and promptly froze at stage 4 checking files. Forced reboot to recovery console failed, forced reboot to safe mode with networking failed in BSOD, finally restarted normally at last known good recovery. I need to find a GOOD HDD repair program, something better than chkdsk, which froze. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated ... I just thought ... could I ignore a HDD sector in BOOT.INI until I am able to replace the disk?

Hi All,

Looking for some advice. I had a sudden BSOD earlier and upon restarting my PC it came up with Startup Repair, only to have it fail to repair the issue. I have been following this thread which seems to have stemmed from the same issue. I too am running Avast, so I suspect that may be the problem.

I have been following the steps in that thread and have reached the point of removing Avast keys in Regedit. I previously ran checks and also attempted to repair from the Win7 OS CD as was suggested in that thread.

I think that following the steps to remove Avast files may be the solution to my issue - however, as I am aware that Regedit can be dangerous to mess around with I wanted to check in and make sure I am following the steps correctly.

System info: Self-built PC, running Windows 7 on a Crucial M4 SSD, with two WD Caviar Black HDDs as storage drives.
CPU: Intel i5-2500k (not OCd)
GPU: EVGA nVidia 970 FTW
RAM: 4x4GB

It appears to have re-mapped my drives, my SSD is C: normally while my HDDs are E: and F:, but the system is currently reading C: as the Windows reserved partition of the SSD, the rest of that drive as F:, and the HDDs as D: and E: instead. This is in line with the user (Lethorio) in the earlier thread, however.

So, where I'm at now. I am around posts #65-70 in that same thread and have found avast keys. Here are the keys in the first folder which appeared in the search results:

I am running Windows 10 an using MS Office 2010 to scan and store my photos of cards to sell on eBay. Lately my screen freezes up when I try to "save as". I see a little message stating "MS Office 2010 not responding" as if I didn't know it. LOL Can you suggest any help for me?

If you are scanning with a scanner then it would be better to scan to PDF then to Office 2010. Office 2010 as you know is getting on a bit so might not be very compatible with Windows 10.

I hope this is the place to post this question. The digital photography/imaging was a possibility but was not sure.

I am running Windows XP - Home. I received an HP Scanner/Printer for Christmas and yesterday I scanned in some medical reports for my mother. I then e-mailed them to her for her records.

The problem comes in when I view them on my computer the resolution is horrible. It looks very blurry. When I printed a copy out from her computer - it came out of the printer real fuzzy and not crystal clear like the original report from the doctor.

How do I rectify this problem?

I'm having a problem with wireless scanning, which I think may be a wireless networking issue.

For about 18 months, I've been using Quicken with two HP Photosmart all-in-ones - a 6180 and a 7280 - in Windows 7. (Quicken allows you to scan documents and attach them to individual transactions.) I recently had to replace the older of the two, the 6180. I tried four devices - an Epson, a Canon and and two HP's - and found that none of them worked with Quicken wirelessly. With other software - PaperPort, MS Office Scanning - I had mixed results.

As they all had their problems, I decided to keep the device I liked best, the Canon Pixma MX882. One of the reasons is that it has a duplexing ADF; also, I found their tech support to be slightly more responsive than Epson's, and HUGELY more so than HP's (which should come as no surprise). In fact, one of Canon's senior tech people spent an hour and a half with me, but he couldn't get it to work.

Here's where I am now - I can only use Quicken with the device through a wired connection, and then only with the WIA driver. I can use the Canon driver (which allows me to use the duplexer) with PaperPort and MS Office, but, again, only wired.

The Canon tech felt it was most likely a Windows 7 security or permissions issue, but couldn't suggest how to get around it. The odd thing is that the older HP's have worked fine (the 7280 continues to do so). I remember when wireless scanning first... Read more

I have created a very simple DLL in C# that scans (TWAIN) and saves the image to a temp file form which I read into a Picturebox.

I invoke a nmap using using nmap -sL It goes through hosts 128-255 but doesn't detect any as being 'up' or reverse their hostname. I do this all time with other subnets. Does anyone know if I am scanning the network wrong? I can ping a random host on this subnet just fine.. Any ideas??

I've used Avast! for at least 2 years. Beginning 2 weeks ago, I started getting the message "Some files could not be scanned" at the end of a scan. Looking at the log revealed that all the unscanned files are in the system restore folder (C:\System VolumeInformation\_restore\. . .). The error message on each file is "Error: Archive is password protected (42056)". It repeats for EVERY file in the folder, including .png, .js and .gif files as well as the actual RP files.

I tried turning system restore off, which zaps all the restore points, rebooting, then creating a new, single restore point and running a Quick Scan. Did not solve the problem; every file in the folder is still "off limits" to Avast! EXCEPT when I do a boot-time scan (which runs before Windows loads).

Posted the problem on Avast's forum, but got no explanation. I realize it does not mean anything is infected, and it's not critical that Avast be able to scan the RPs, but the fact that it started doing this on 11/14 and now does it for every scan signals that something in the OS or in Avast has changed. Or might this have something to do with the fact that I have SpywareBlaster, a program that "immunizes" some registry items so spyware can't alter them (most HOST files)? Could the last update for that program have contained a change where it now immunizes the RPs?

Anybody have a clue as to what has happened here?

Hi, folks.

Installed the Epson WF 4740 All-in-on printer last week, added to my home wireless network and it is working fine for printing from all three laptops on the network. Copying and scanning at the printer are working as well. Also scans successfully to a USB key inserted at the printer.

Problem: Menu has option to send scan to a PC on the network. Says Document Capture Pro software must be installed to do this, which it is. But when I try to do this, menu shows "Cannot find computer". The menu has another dropdown to select a job, once the computer has been selected, and on my PC I have a couple saved jobs (scanner settings), but the printer won't detect them. I suspect if it would find my computer on the network, I could select one of my saved jobs, and the scan would end up on my computer.

I can, however, trigger a scan using the Document Capture Pro software on the laptop, and it works fine, including the scan winding up on my PC. However, if my PC is in another room, I have to go to the printer to insert the original, then go back to the PC, start the scan, than go back to the printer to grab the original.

Called Epson tech support, went through the usual steps the "tech" was reading off a script. Finally put me on hold, talked to "senior tech", said I need to make sure port 2968 is open on my wireless router, as this port is used by the printer.

We have a Canon imageRunner 1025N multifunction printer/copier/scanner in our office. Up until today, it was directly connected to one of our office computers through a USB cable. Now it's been networked. One of the functions of this printer is that it could scan in documents to the computer. But now that it's networked, the scanner feature seems to no longer be an option. As far as I could tell with the manual, the scanner will not work if it's networked. My question is that if this is true, can a printer be connected to a networked AND connected to a computer through the USB cable at the same time (without any functionality issues) so that we can scan our documents again? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you. (And if there is no one with an answer, any help directing me to where I could find an answer would be appreciated as well since I cannot find how to get help through Canon's website.)

A:Canon imageRunner 1025N Scanning Issue

You may just need to reinstall the Canon software from the CD and configure the scanner as being Network connect rather then USB. Also the brochure suggests the unit support Scan to Email and Scan to FTP, you can configure that if its network connected, that's generally how most Xerox units are setup at the sites I visit. The Canon website seems to very lacking, you may have better manuals on the installation CD.

But there should be no reason it can't be connected both ways, however the scan to email or a network drive would be better.

When I first bought my CanoScan 8800F and set about scanning my old slides I was a bit enthusiastic and scanned at the default resolution. The resulting images, when printed, were poor quality. I have now started re-scanning all 124 slides at 4800dpi (or is it ppi?). The trouble is that when I enhance them or change their sizes Photoshop takes ages to complete the operation. Should I scan at 4800 or 2400 then resize the images to 600 before doing any enhancing? Is there some way to scan slides so that they print at an acceptable resolution but do not involve hours of waiting? I also want to burn the scanned images to a DVD.

I wanted to reinstall all the spyware/adware that I previously had everthing was ok until I ran spyware terminator and it found 7 items I told it to delete them and it had to restart a screen came up during the restart saying it was getting rid of them. Xp started up and then after 15 minutes or so it froze up. I restarted and it would do this over and over each time less and less time before it would freeze up. Eventually it would get to the screen where it ask me how do I want to enter. Now I can only get into safe mode. I have even tried the last known good config and nothing. One of my company laptops is giving me a strange issue. It is a Dell Latitude E7250 running Windows 7 Pro SP1. In the morning, it will fail to boot. No errors, it just shows the Dell logo then goes black. If I boot from a Windows 7 DVD, get to the command prompt, I can run bootsec /RebuildBcd and it finds the Windows install. I choose it to add to the list, but get a message saying "Specified device not found". This is a UEFI setup.

If I exit out of the command prompt, the system reboots fine and brings me to the user's login screen. I can power down, reboot, etc and the system works fine the rest of the day. The user reboots a few times, as well.

However, the following day, he'll bring it back in with the same original issue. I'll go through the same steps, and he's back working for the day.

It's an easy fix, but I would love to end the loop. I don't understand why it would stop working again. When I fix the issue, the external drive and disc are removed before I start testing the system.

I'm at a loss on what to do here. I know I can change back to a BIOS boot in the laptop's BIOS settings, but is there a way to convert the OS (and the hard drive) without hosing his data? Is there something else I should be doing, now that the system boots, so fix this?

My computer has an issue where upon most start-ups, it will fail to start up properly and go into startup repair. After the startup repair is complete, the computer is restarted and boots up successfully; however, any files downloaded during the previous session are partially deleted (some files end up missing, often including the executable), and the recycle bin is refilled from having been cleared the day before.

The startup repair issue only seems to occur if the computer has been turned off for a relatively long time; restarting the computer shortly after turning it off works fine without error, and does not do the strange file deleting. In fact, restarting the computer once before powering down before I go to bed seems to prevent the startup repair from occurring in the morning on first start up.

About two months ago, the computer began telling me that my Windows installation was not legitimate, and reentering the code was not working; after calling a Windows representative, I was advised to reinstall Windows 7. I did this reinstallation and cleared everything (the entire hard drive was wiped; the only thing I backed up was the documents folder) and the Windows verification issue was fixed, but the startup repair issue still persists.

I have tried several security scans with Windows Essentials and Malwarebites, which tell me there are no security risks. I have also checked cord connections inside the computer, and they are all fine.

I just went to start up my laptop and it presents me with the options of starting normally or repairing. Doesn't matter which I pick it always brings me to WinRE.

After running Startup Repair I received the following error codes:

Boot critical file c:\windows\system32\drivers\dzowuho.sys is corrupt.

Repair action: File repair
Result: Failed. Error Code = 0x2
Time taken = 6786ms

Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed Error code = 0x2
Time taken = 633613ms

I went back to the main menu in WinRE ran command prompt and tried to run ChkDsk and scheduled it to run on restart, which it never did. So I go back to WinRE and try to run sfc /scannow and it won't because there is a scan pending and told me to restart and try again, but whenever I restart it just take sme to WinRE.

Just looked up the difference in the two - probably should have done that before - and ran sfc /scannow instead of ChkDsk...I am an idiot.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Within a month of buying a new T580, it was having problems with the SSD and motherboard and eventually wouldn't even boot as far as the UEFI screen. I sent it in to the depot a couple weeks ago for warranty repair and it is currently on hold for parts. I just called and they said that the part will not arrive for another month, estimated May 3. This seems unreasonable to me; if I buy a new laptop and it contains faulty hardware, shouldn't it be Lenovo's responsibility to make sure I have a working laptop again ASAP? I understand that they may have no control over when the part will arrive, but there must be something Lenovo can do besides just leaving me computerless for this whole time, and the people I've talked to on the phone do not seem particularly interested in coming up with a solution. This is my work computer and being without it for over a month is not an option, so if this is not resolved soon I will have to buy a new laptop from another brand and sell the Thinkpad whenever it finally gets fixed. Does anyone else have experience dealing with this kind of thing? Were you able to solve the problem or did you just have to wait it out?

However, last night I plugged the cooling mat into the USB after I had booted up the computer. Everything was fine after I changed the LCD inverter, but when I plugged the cooling mat into the USB port the computer shut off and hasn't turned back on since. Hi all,

3-4-yr old HP machine from Best Buy that came with no Windows CD and with instructions on how to create a recovery CD. After moving a couple of times, can?t find that CD. But, this is a legit copy and I have been installing and updating with the MS certified updates and have their validation program installed.

Never was able to get SP3 installed, so still running SP-2, but have updated most everything else as allowed.

Few months ago Explorer started searching for long periods before it would build out the file system tree and other programs do the same thing to open or save-as a file. IE often does not open a link in an email through Outlook. The progress bar will scroll a few segments and then stop there.

IE version is 8.

I?ve scanned with AVG, Super Anti Spyware, PC Tools Spyware, & Malware Bytes. Run scandisk & defrag periodically.

I bought an XP SP-2 OS to start over. It?s Version 2004 Corporate and is also labeled ?Unattended.? I don?t know what any of that means.

After reading this forum I have a few questions I hope I can get some help with.
Can I do a repair with this copy over the old copy ? even with the new product code?
Does this even sound like a repair candidate?
Does the ?Unattended? label mean anything important?

Thanks to anybody who can help.

Which, IMO, means that there is more than a passing chance that it may do something to a system that users may not necessarily want done.http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=c...mp;oq=&aqi=Myself...I try not to use software which may have been hacked before I install it.Louis

I have a computer in my possession, running Windows XP Media Center, that is having issues, to resolve these issues I figured I would try a simple Windows Repair.

Windows repair is unsuccessful though, for when it starts running through windows setup (after rebooting) it gets about 2 mins in and then a pop-up comes up stating that file "so & so" is missing. So I manually browse and find the file, and click ok. Unfortunately this solves nothing, as the file is still seen as missing, even though I know it's there.

I figured it might be a bad DVD, so I try another installation DVD. Same issue pops up. I did some research and found that sometimes the DVD drive being bad, or the memory could cause issues with this part of setup. So I switch out both memory sticks, try each one individually and after that failed I tried a different DVD drive... Same issue is popping up.

After a bit more of this I just threw the contents of the DVD onto the actual hard drive itself, so this way when the pop up came up I could just go to the location on the hard drive to retrieve them. I find the files, and even HERE the installation isn't reading the files correctly and asks me for the correct files. Same issue.

Does anyone have any clue as to what else could be causing this issue? I searched for some time but could not figure out what else it could be. I have access to a few different technician tools so I can try a variety of options. Thanks!

Rather than performing a repair, have you tried to perform a System Restore from an earlier date?

I own a Toshiba Satellite laptop, I think its a L300, windows vista. The specs are not the ones found in my profile, I would fetch them if I could get init it. The laptops battery has not worked for a while, recently my housemate stood on the power cable and it lost power and shut down. On startup it would not get past the Micrsoft Corporation loading bar, I restarted it and was offered start-up repair. When I run start-up repair the screen goes black and nothing happens. I tried leaving it on this over night and nothing happened, it was still black by the morning. The boot manager is offering me no other options than startup repair and startup so I am not sure how to try things like safe mode. I have no idea what to do with it now, nothing seems to be working. If anyone could help me fix this it would be greatly appeciated.

First thing I would suggest doing is running a test on the hard drive to be sure it is healthy.

Do you have a retail Vista disc?

Please follow this guide:

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use the appropriate link below to get the manufacturer's diagnostics.

These are direct links to the download (apart from Western Digital) so the download will start as soon as you click on the link.

These diagnostics are only available as ISO images to burn to CD except for Excelstore who also provide a download for a USB flash drive. Please note that this USB version is only for use on Excelstore hard drives.

Excelstore ISO for CD Or USB flash drive (instructions included in Readme.txt file)
Seagate, Samsung, Maxtor & Quantum
Western Digital Click on the Download button next to Diag504fCD.iso

NOTE: For Toshiba/Fujitsu, or any make of drive not listed, use the diagnostics from the Seagate link.

For the downloads that are in a .zip file, right click the file and select Extract Here and burn the image to a CD. (A re-recordable CD will be fine).

In Windows 7 right click the extracted file, select Open With, then select Windows Disc Image Burning Tool then follow the prompts.
For all other versions of windows (if you do not have an ISO burner) download this free software. ImgBurn Install the program and start the application. Select the top left hand option to Write image file to disc and then on the next window click on the small yellow folder icon and... Read more

Here is the story, a computer got a virus, and was beyond repair, So we went for a clean format. The computer was for some reason unable to boot from the windows disk, or any disk for that matter. So i hooked up the hard drive to another motherboard, and installed windows 7 from there. And hooked it back up to the original, thinking it would modify the configuration files with the startup repair. However startup repair is unable to find any issues, and i cannot get into windows at this time. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

A:Startup Repair issue?

Sometimes a HD will start Win7 if you move it to another computer, after swapping out all its drivers.

With XP you would run Repair Install from booted CD, but Win7 runs Repair from desktop so that is out.

If you want to make sure if it will start, boot back into DVD repair console, click through to startup repair and run up to 3 separate times with reboot.

The times I've not been able to get a HD to run Win7 after installing in another machine is if the two mobo's CPUs had a different number of cores.

I am having a very similar issue to the one on this thread:
Was having BSOD issues since 3 months after I bought my HP Pavilion dv4 laptop. HP told me the BSOD was caused by a faulty update. (rolling eyes) I'm still under the 1 year warranty but have VERY important documents I HAVE to get off of this computer before I resort to them shipping me another.
Booted up my computer and the Startup Repair came up. It was unable to Repair so I clicked on check disk. Now it reads:
The type of file system is NTFS.
WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.
CHKDSK is verifying files (1 of 3)...
4 percent complete. (88247 of 211712 file records processed)

It has been on this percentage for an hour now.
Someone please help me out. I'm not the best with computers. Simple instructions would REALLY be appreciated. I took the memory out and switched them around thinking maybe it was unseated...
Out of ideas.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

dzowuho.sys is (I think) a piece of malware

If Startup Repair doesn't fix it, you'll either have to:
- manually rebuild the boot stuff (and stop the dzowuho.sys file from loading)
- perform a Repair install of Vista
- or backup, wipe, and reinstall Windows

BTW - you may want to try the Command Prompt option from WinRE and rename the dzowuho.sys file to dzowuho.BAK

I am trying to repair an XP Home PC from an XP Home SP1 disk. All goes well until I get a message stating that it needs the ialmnt5.sys file (intel graphics driver). It askes for the installation disk and the path where the file is located. Unfortunately both the keyboard and mouse are disabled making the selection impossible.

1) So why is the repair asking for this file at all?

2) What disabled the keyboard and mouse?

Thanks everyone!

Is your keyboard and mouse USB? Try going into the BIOS and look for enable legacy USB or something to that effect

Widows 7 won't boot repair, says first back up data. command to overcome this?I am attempting to boot my laptop (ASUS X501A) with a bootable USB with windows 7...but it just says that I need to back up the data first then it aborts the boot operation. Is there any way I can enter or edit the command before running the boot to make it just format memory before performing the boot? or just make it boot regardless of the memory? The laptop refused to connect to the internet, so I am just typing out the information on the boot so as to get more accurate advice I suppose

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
I'm guessing that you have the Windows 7 installation image installed on a flash drive, and you are trying to boot from it?
Did you change the boot order in the BIOS so that the USB device is the first device in the boot order and you HDD/SSD is the second?
What sort of problem do you have that is prompting you to boot from the USB drive?

I ordered a Dell Inspiron 15-5559 on 6/1.  I received it on 6/10.  It worked fine for about an hour before  the screen went blank.  After a long conversation with tech support I returned the defective laptop to Dell the next day.  It arrived back at Dell on 6/16 and quickly the status was updated to repair on hold, parts not available.
Since then I have had nothing but frustrating conversations via several avenues trying to get more information.  It seems unbelievable that Dell does not seem to know when they will receive the parts (or at least they will not tell me).  Everyone says they will check and then comes back and tells me the parts are not available and they will let me know when the status changes.
I am hoping someone who monitors this forum can help me get in contact with someone who can actually give me an estimated timeline.  At this point I am considering pursuing a return of the system and going elsewhere, if I cannot get either my computer back or a replacement unit within a week or so.
