New Computer, VERY slow downloading speed

Q: New Computer, VERY slow downloading speed

I bought a new computer last week, and i am connecting wirelessly to my router for internet, just like my other 3 roommates. My download speeds are in the 11-20 KB/S range while theres are in the 400-500 range! even my old low RAM computer is getting dl speeds in that range. I don't know why it is doing this, one of my roommates said he still downloads stuff on his win XP computer bc his new Win 7 comp is just as slow as mine!
Now, a series of stupid questions:
Is this a common problem with new computers in general?
Is there an easy way to fix it, such as utilizing more priority to download speeds?

I am pretty new to computers in general, so any dumbed-down info would be much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you monitored your system with Windows Task Manager while downloading? If you determine Firefox is causing the problem, try safe mode and/or a new profile. Sometimes settings and/or extensions got corrupted leading to strange behavior. Standard diagnostic - Firefox

Hey forgive any computer illiteracy I have

I am running Windows Xp pro with hi-speed internet. I'm using a router and have zonealarm but have tried closing that and I don't know the first thing about the windows firewall. On my old computer I downloaded faster than most computers. Since getting my new one however my download speed tends to max out around 30 kb/s. There is no spyware(I have done multiple checks) and no viruses exist on it, I've looked at ports and can not figure out which port would be slowing down every single download. I've reconfigured my router and that solved nothing and I have closed all applications and restarted etc... Also It is not the location of where I am downloading from, i've downloaded stuff from Australia at 35 kb/s yet a friend sending me something over ICQ, MSN or AOL from 2 blocks away maxes at 25 kb/s.

Also it's not the fact that im using IE, i've tried using dl accelerators and firefox, nothing helps.

Plz help!

I go to Speedtest.net daily and my average Ping time is about 26 seconds. Average download time is 32Mbps, Upload time is 11 Mbps. I phoned my ISP. They told me everything was fine on their end. I use Wi-Fi. Was asked to plug cable directly into laptop. No significant change in speed.

MAIN PROBLEM(S):
1) If I'm on a webpage and click on a YouTube link, or even if I go directly to YouTube, it takes an average of about 5 minutes for video to start playing. This happens constantly, without exception.

2) Also, very often (7 or 8 times out of 10), when I try to scroll down, it indicates that ''so and so website is not responding''. However, it usually works after 1-3 minutes. I don't understand what is causing the lag time.

Hello,
In the last 24 hours I have noticed a 'slower downloading' of my internet browsing. Almost every I try to do like refresh pages, watch videos, post topics and click on links it takes forever. Youtube videos or online streams take forever to load and they play in 'clips' not straight through. Even music played through WMP is slow and clippy.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium with SP 1.

What do I need to do?

I'm not sure what I should give anyone to take a look at this but here is a hijackthis log thing. Please help!! I can't even download a mod for half life one without waiting 24 hours

But,Recently while watching a video it buffers like after every 3-5 seconds. And while downloading stuff(via torrent) it is very slow and the download speed shown is 1kb/s , which is very very slow.I think the is caused by a software called tcp z(it patches tcpip.syc, according the users limit). The changes made by it are temporary and only occur till shutdown. But,I m not sure by what it might be caused by.
So please can anyone help me out regarding this.Suggestions and advices are welcome .

I am new to this forum, my apologies if I have posted in the wrong place. After downloading a game on to my computer it began having the following problems:1. Very slow to open Firefox (3.5.6) and Thunderbird (3.0)2. During downloads Firefox stopped responding (I was downloading SpywareBlaster and Mike Lins Start up Control panel)3. Other functions such as response to start menu have slowed or stopped responding.I have a custom built computer with a 32bit processor. I am using Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 Pro (My hard drive is partitioned). I was using Windows XP Pro when the problem occurred. While downloading the game, AVG (8.5 free) detected a virus which I put into the virus vault.Since then I have done the following:1. Uninstalled and removed all files associated with the Game.2. Completed several registry scans with Registry Booster 2.3. Scanned twice with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (1.43, updated). First scan found 2 infections quarantined and deleted them successfully. Second scan found nothing.4. I ran AVG (9.0) scan in Safe Mode on Windows 7 which found nothing.5. Ran AVG (9.0) scan on Windows XP Pro and it detected 3 issues which were moved to the virus vault. After doing all this I am still experiencing the problems listed above. If anyone could help that would be great.Thank you!****Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.3 (BETA)Scan saved at 12:47:25 PM, on 5/01/2010Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702)Boot mod... I have a client who's computer is having problems downloading from the net. It either times out or is going that slow that it would take hours to download even basic programs.
I have run a virus check, malware and spy ware check and have come up blank. I have checked how much downlaod they are allowed in case it has been reduced due to doing too much, not this. Have checke their connection and the figures they are getting is fine and their IP says they are recieving a similar speed it just isn't getting through to the computer.
I have advised them to go back to their IP provider and get a new modem as I think this is where the problem may be, but am looking for some suggestions in case there is an area that I haven't checked out.
Have tested the unit outside their home and it seems to run and download fine so the above was my last possible idea for where the problem may lay.
Can anyone give me any further ideas and where else to look as am fast running out of ideas.

I am running Windows 2000.I have broadband and until today I haven't had this problem.First a little background...
I installed Systems Works with no problems
I installed Webroot Spy Sweeper and I think that may have been the start of my problem.
When Streaming videos it takes FOREVER if at all to play. Downloading is a joke. What usually took a minute to download is so slow now that I usually just cancel it.I went to Windows Updates and thought that would help.but it didn't.I unistalled Spy Sweeper thinking that would help but it didn't.I'm thinking (and it is quite possible I am wrong)that I may have deleted something I shouldn't have when I swept and deleted Spy/ADware.

Any Thoughts???

My computer isn't slow except when I'm connected to the net with  Firefox 37.0.1 or Chrome 42.0.2311.90 to download pages and sites which take a long time.

I had a look on the internet for a solution and got the following:

PCHealthboos.link

Tweak Bit (Microsoft Partner)

Reimage
Super Anti spyware but I think I would probably do more harm than good as most of them get into the registry.

I have scanned with MalwareBytesAntiMalware and ESET 8.0.304.0 which have shown no problems.

Open Task Manager and check the cpu usage. If it's high, check to see which process is using the cpu. You may also want to check Event Viewer and see if Windows is reporting any hardware issues. If all of that looks normal, then we will need to know exactly what is "slow".

Hi Everyone,
I have a 2GB ram Acer Aspire One AO722 computer that has been slowing down substantially. I have a huge amount of hard drive space but it seems if I store more on it it gets slower. My question to you is what is the best software out there to speed up a computer?

The Software I Currently Have (To Not Mention):
Tweaking.com Tweaker
CCleaner
ATF Cleaner

A:Best way to speed up a slow computer

Start by checking this out:

Optimize Windows 7
How many processes are running at any given time? Use the link above in addition to deciding how many processes you need running as too many will slow your rig down. I have an old laptop with only 1 GB RAM, Intel Duo Core and 55GB HDD. I usually only have 48 processes running at rest, and when I'm online, with multiple programs opened, I only use about 5% of my CPU

Tweaking things is a tricky route to take. Some can help, but many can harm. Windows 7 is pretty well tweaked out of the box so I wouldn't do to many. Try scanning for malware with; Malwarebytes or Superantispyware to see what may be holding your system up.

That's a good place to start, the members here can help further, but until you do a few of these common steps there's no need to get too in depth, as you'd be surprised how much these things can help.

Hello,

I've recently bought a new computer but for some reason I'm getting only about 10-60 KB/sec. When on my old computer(which is now broken) I would get around 1 - 3 MB/sec. I've tested it on my mom's computer and her download speed is fine. My ping is fine, such as when I play online video games and such I have no lag or problems. And I can upload things at my normal rate as well. But my download speed just won't keep up. things that use to take seconds now take several minutes or even hours.

I don't know what the problem is and I've tried a few different solutions that I've found, some even on this site, but none have worked. So please if anyone can help I would gladly appreciate it, and I will give more information that is needed.

Computer Specs:

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional , 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7

Last night we bought a brand new HP Pavillion a6838f with vista and began downloading different programs. Well we began to notice that although the internet works at a perfectly fine speed downloads go excessivly slow. I have read that Nortan antivirus is a potential cause but I was just wondering if there are any other possibilities that could be causing the problem. We recieve internet via cable. Also, plugging our previous computer in right next to us and trying to download the same program, the speed is considerably faster, noting that the second computer is using windows XP.

A:Slow Download speed on new computer

What speeds are you getting with it? Visit http://www.speakeasy.net and run their speed test. What should you be getting?

Are you using a router? Try it with the router and with your computer connected directly to your modem.

Could be the related drivers for your system. Visit the HP site and install all driver updates related to your specific model.

Hello 7forums,
I recently purchased a new computer, and everything is running perfect except the download speed is very slow.
My old computer would average 1Mb d/l speed where as my new one hovers around 50-90kb. My brother is using my old computer on the same network and i got him to d/l the latest wow patch (so we were downloading from the same source) and it still averaged at 1Mb.
However when playing WoW i average anywhere between 30-60ms and my browing speed is perfect.
So to summarize:
My old computer's d/l speed is 1Mb, where as my new on is around 90kb,
After downloading from the same source the result was still the same,
Browsing speed and in-game pings are fine.

Hi, I have 3 computers in the house on wifi. Two get 20-30 Megs, one gets just 1 Meg! It is fitted with a new Netgear wifi adaptor. On a wire it gets 5 Megs. Seems like there is something wrong with the computer. Virgin did a remote access 'deep clean' antivirus and so on, but its still rubbish.

Any ideas anyone?

First I would make sure that you have the latest drivers for that adapter.
Was it always slow or just with this adapter ?

Hi Guys,

Been a while since I have posted, thanks for your help in the past.

I have 5 problems at the moment:

- Computer is slow to startup.

- Windows defender keeps finding the same 2 problems: Adware: Win32/Cpmsky & Browser Modifier: Win32/Fotomoto - says it removes them but they come straight back.

- CA Antivirus has been detecting and removing 44 threats for the last 6 weeks or so.

- When I shut down my computer it invariably downloads and installs updates - I have checked this out and it is always the same update (which is always installed properly).

- Spybot S&D also acting up a bit by not immunizing my computer properly - ie: after clicking on Immunize it tells you how many items that you are not protected from, ie: 198, after updating I am still only protected against 74670 whilst the total reads 74861. A discrepancy of 191?

Hello, I think I may have a couple of problems going on.

A) I have noticed that my computer has been running slower than usual. It seems that something is running on hard drive. I don't think it my virus update because it is set to run only when I prompt it to.

B) My e-mail account is a concern. I occasionally get junk mail, like stock info or men's medications. I usually add them to my block senders list. I have noticed that some of the e-mail addresses that I block come from ligitimate sites, i.e. design/build firms or realtor firms. Can e-mail addresses be hi-jacked? The reason I ask is because this morn. I went to block one and my own e-mail address came up.

Would it be okay if I sent you a hi-jack this report for you to take a look at?

Thanks so much!

I seem to have a problem with the speed of my excel program and its willingness to move between cells in a timely manner. My computer is on a network and is not the main, however, all programs on my computer are stand alone programs (Individually installed). We simply share the data (Files) between them. Lately my excel program has been slow to respond to commands. (Type in one cell and tab over to continue typing in another cell and it takes a moment for the curser to catch up.) Although there are quite a few programs where data is shared, Excel seem to be the only one affected. Have talked with Gateway (OEM installed Office 2003) with no luck in solving the problem. Repaired and Reinstalled....still no change. Even tried unhooking the router. This did eliminate the problem, however, I need the shared files on the network. We did switch the ports around to make sure the the router wasn't bad and experienced the same problem no matter what port we were in. No other computer is experiencing the same problem, just mine.
Running windows XP 2002 (SP2) and on a Linksys router network.and if I am reading it right, 71ghz mem.

On my new computer the download speed (broadband) is the crawl of 0.81Mb/sec.using speedtest.net. At the time of test the computer was doing no 'work'. I noticed this slowness when downloading a driver update which was at .89Mb/sec.
Another time when downloading a program it was at .196Mb/sec. Now it is a consistent 0.81 Mbps.

At the same time of the test on three other computers all using the same tester, the same ISP, the same router, the same telephone line in the same house the speed is 2.01Mb/sec. which is the usual speed here.

The fact that they all use XP and have differing hardware should make no difference I think - if I'm wrong I can supply those details. This new computer has a much higher specification than the others but again would this make a difference?

I have done virus and malware scans.

Can anyone explain what could be causing this and how I can fix this please? I can't think of any other relevant info to include at this point.

A:Slow download speed on 1 computer fast on others?

Concentrate on the link between your computer and the router. Replace the cable if it is a wired connection. Use the cable from one of the working systems to test. Also use the same port as one of the fast systems.

If no change, swap the network card or check for updated drivers or chipset drivers if the ethernet connector is on the mainboard
Your router may also have QOS settings that give priority to one or more computers based on ip or MAC address.

Are all the computers wired connections?

Hello Everyone,
I need help please. I have 4 computers (iMac, 2 laptops and 1 PC desktop) on a wireless network in different rooms of my house. All but one have 20+ mbps speed. The problem desktop computer is new but has 2.4 mbps speed. I have cable modem with a fast bandwidth and a Cisco N600 router.

I changed the network card (ASUS PCE-N53 Wireless -N Adapter) in the problem computer which didn't improve anything. As I write this, I am using a laptop on the desk with the problem computer and just did a speedtest which came in at 20.13 mbps. If I hard wire the problem computer it runs at 30+ mbps.

I live in an area where DSL is not available, so I'm using a dial up connection (AOL 9.0) Our old computer (Dell Dimension 4100, Win ME) would get anywhere from 50 to 53.3K speed and when it wasn't locking up had reasonable internet speed. We recently purchased a new computer (E machines C2825) and the speed rarely reaches over 35K using the same access numbers. It has XP home. Is there a way to get the speed up? Even though it is a 56K modem, is there something that would limit the speed, and if so can I change it? Or should I return the E-machines while it's still under warranty and quit while I'm not so far behind?

A:Slow dial up speed on brand new computer

Is this the exact same phone connection that you used before?

A lot of things can affect the speed, but few have much to do with the computer or modem themselves.

The phone connections must be in excellent condidion since even a small problem with a bad connection or corrosion can make a lot of difference to a dialup connection.

When I first moved into "this old house", 35 was all I could get. But unscrewing all the phone connections and cleaning to bare copper, from the computer to the box outside gave me solid 53.3 connections after that. Even the connections on the modem itself and the wire going in can be cleaned with a Q-Tip and alcohol.

In the Control Panel under modem settings, some say speed can be achieved by turning off flow control (hardly a problem with new computers---old ones sometimes couldn't keep up) and be sure compression is enabled.

Check that all your modem speed settings are at or above its capacity, and look for the newest driver you can find.

If you like the computer and it works well, I certainly wouldn't consider returning it for this alone. New modems can be gotten for $10.

The number of other devices connected to the same phone line should also be limited. The more answering machines, extensions, caller ID's on the line, the slower it will be.

And limit the length of phone cords. If you have 20 feet of rolled up phone wire behind the computer, get a shorter wire .

That's all I can think of at the moment. Othe... Read more

A:Very slow internet speed on my main computer

How are you connected, 802.11 "b" max is ~5.5Mbps, "a" and "g" max out at ~20 Mbps, etc. WiFi operates at the highest possible speed that both endpoints can support. For example, an 802.11g laptop connected to an 802.11n router will only work at the lower speed of "g". In other words, both devices need to support the same standard in order to operate at those speeds.

Also, are there any physical obstructions in the line of sight between devices? What's the distance between the devices? Is there any radio interference in the area?

Wikipedia: WiFi > Interference
Interference

For more details on this topic, see Electromagnetic interference at 2.4 GHz.

Wi-Fi connections can be disrupted or the internet speed lowered by having other devices in the same area. Many 2.4 GHz 802.11b and 802.11g access-points default to the same channel on initial startup, contributing to congestion on certain channels. Wi-Fi pollution, or an excessive number of access points in the area, especially on the neighboring channel, can prevent access and interfere with other devices' use of other access points, caused by overlapping channels in the 802.11g/b spectrum, as well as with decreased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between access points. This can become a problem in high-density areas, such as large apartment complexes or office buildings with many Wi-Fi access points.

Additionally, other devices use the 2.4 GHz band: microwave ovens, ISM ban... Read more

Okay, I'm baffled. Usually I can trouble shoot problems, but not this time.

I have 8 computers on my network. My main computer (this one) has a very slow upload speed.

Comcast - 20mb down, 5mb up

This computer - 25mb down, .17mbps up

All of the rest will hit 5mbps up consistently.

Everything I've done here has not worked ...

I've plugged the computer straight into the modem
Updated built in network adaptor drivers
Flushed the DNS: ipconfig /flushdns
Put on a new network cable
Tried a network cable from a computer that does work fine
I spent 45 min's on phone with Comcast support.

I run XP Pro
All upgrades are current
i7 4gig ram
Dual 512k video cards

Computer worked fine few weeks ago. But now it's not.

I do not have an additional slot to install a new NIC card.

What do I try next?
What else do you need to know to help me trouble shoot this?

Thanks alot for your help.

Okay, this has been going on for weeks. Even my pretty techie bro is out of ideas. My brother returned to college not long ago, but he was still home when it all started. I'd asked him to see if internet was slow or anything, and he checked and told me it was fine. A few days later my dad brought his laptop home from work. The laptop is only on our network when he's doing stuff at home - but I asked him, and I was for myself it was completely fine...and fast. And as my brother's now back at college with his laptop, my computer is generally the only one on the network, but as it was going on before that, I know their laptops weren't effecting anything.

Now that we're done with the back-story, I'll do my best to explain what's going on: The connection on my computer is fine. Sometimes it'll short out, but generally it's good. However, it's always slow - about maybe 2 times faster than dial-up. But pretty often it becomes incredibly slow, taking as much as 20-30 minutes to load something, even simpler things.

That's the best I can come up with right now about the problem. Resetting the router and/or restarting the computer can help a little, but it eventually goes to near dial-up speed, then down to when it's very slow.

I guess something to add is that I'm the only one with Vista on the computer. My dad's laptop has XP, and my brother has a Mac laptop.

I've only used up a little less than 1/4 of the s... Read more
