Unable to open SOME jpg files - Shadow Copy Service

Q: Unable to open SOME jpg files - Shadow Copy Service

There is a widely reported problem of some jpg files displaying thumbnails which cannot be opened and reported to be unrecognised or corrupt while other jpg files open normally. I think this problem may also relate to other types of files.

**

I have experienced this widely reported problem of image files (not all) being reported as corrupt or unable to be opened by various programs. Why some and not all? I tried so many methods to recover my images by following numerous suggestions from so many forums. None worked. Copying the so-called corrupt files to another disc and trying to open them on another computer didn't work either.

Then, I had a sneaky thought that it may have something to do with Shadow Copy services. Previously, I had tried to backup my computer, during which the process creates a shadow copy of the files to be backed-up, but the backup failed. I retried the process, but the backup failed again and reported an error while trying to read the shadow copy.

I checked the number of shadow copies on my hard disc of which there were about 6. I decided to clean up the hard disc using System Tools > Disk Cleanup > Clean up system files > More Options > System Restore and Shadow Copies > Clean up > Delete > OK > Delete Files.

Voilà !!!

All images reappeared.

Preferred Solution: Unable to open SOME jpg files - Shadow Copy Service

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The registry value you'd want to check is ImagePath. In your case it seems to point to something that's not being found, or the ImagePath value doesn't exist at all.

======================================

The "description" is just a text string. It's saying "use string index 101 from vssvc.exe in the 'description' field for this service". On my box, which is English Windows, that maps to:

"Manages and implements Volume Shadow Copies used for backup ... blah blah"

On yours, the description string embedded in vssvc.exe may be different if it's a Slovenian version.

Try clicking on the start button, type services.msc in the search box and hit enter. Click on standard at the bottom of the window and scroll almost
all the way down until you reach Volume Shadow Copy. It should be set as Automatic. If it is set as Manual highlight the area and right click on it.
Select Properties. In the drop down menu, select Automatic. Click on Start Service. When it has restarted the VSS, select Apply and Okay. If this
fixed the problem it would be a good idea to create a System Restore point immediately.

Does the Volume Shadow Copy Service that comes with Windows Server 2003 only start and come in to the running state in service control when it is actually taking a snapshot?

I have been googling and reading articles but they tend to all just tell me the basics of how to use it or the architecture of it, and I've been unable to find the answer to my question, so I was hoping that someone could share their wisdom on this with me.

Is has been my observation that both services "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" and "Volume Shadow Copy" both come in the Manual Startup Type by default in services. This would seem to support that they do not run all the time to watch things, but only when taking a snapshot?

Can anyone shed more light on this?

The above error message shows up shortly after bootup.
Other symptoms are System Restore and Backup and Restore fail. When manually creating a System Restore Point, the failure message is:  “The restore point could not be created for the following reason:  The Remote Procedure Call failed  0x800706BE”.

Also, two windows updates fail to install, even when attempted separately, they are:  KB2957689 and KB2808679 with an error code of “8E5E03FA Windows encountered unknown errors”.

What I have done so far:

In Services, I checked “Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider”. It was stopped and set to Manual. I set it to Automatic and Started. I did the same for “Volume Shadow Copy”. In this case, the service started but stopped with the same above error after about 10 seconds. The dependencies for both services are the same:  “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” and “DCOM Server Process Launcher”. I checked both and found them set to Automatic and were already Started.

In Msconfig, I found nothing unchecked in Startup or Services.

At the command prompt I performed “sfc /scannow”. It produced a report indicating it found errors but I do not know how to read the file. I have the almost 3MB CBS.log file available. There is a possibility it could not correct all errors.

I use Paragon Backup version 10.2 in Windows 7 premium 64 bit to backup to an external USB Hard Drive. Backup used to work fine but now the backups fail halfway through. I've traced the problem through the Event viewer to be caused by:
"Volume Shadow Copy service entered the stopped state"

How do I prevent the Volume Shadow Copy service from entering the stopped state during a backup?
Thanks.

P.S. The error message during Paragon's backup is
Backup [virtual] succeeded

Backup [committed] failed
VSS: Can't read volume data
Error code 0x 12016

When I switched Paragon to use its own hot processing instead of Window's the error message became:

Just writing an update to say I managed to solve the problem by turning off my AV completely before starting the service and it worked (I obviously changed it back to manual once it started)!

Annoyingly, I had actually already tried this before by turning off individual components of my AV at a time (eg firewall), but for some reason had overlooked trying to turn the whole thing off...

Out of interest, does anyone have any idea what in the AV (KIS 2015) would be blocking VSS from starting suddenly (I haven't changed any of its settings from before the issue arose)?

Hiya

Shadow Copy Restore is a component of the intelligent file storage technologies in Microsoft Windows Server 2003. It enables you to prevent data loss by creating and storing shadow copies of files and folders on your network at predetermined time intervals.

Before a client computer can access shadow copies, you must install the Shadow Copy Client. The operating systems that require the Shadow Copy Client include:

Windows XP
Windows 2000 (SP3 and higher)
System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, Windows XP

Windows Installer : To install this msi package you need Windows Installer
2.0 or higher. You can download it from one of the following locations:
Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows 98 SE

Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows 2000

Hi all,

I got me an Acer Iconica w3..... New little 8 inch tablet.
Setup like any other machine.  Connected to my Windows home server or Windows Server 2012 essentials.  Tried to run a backup using the server connector.  Backup failed with the subject VSS error in the application logs.  I also tried
the built in backup Windows 8 backup under control panel labeled Windows 7 File history system image.  No dice with either.

Investigating the error, I found some tests to confirm permission - all passed.  Trusting the error message to be accurate (permissions problem) I see direction to make sure the VSS service is started (I started and changed to automatic) and to grant
explicit access in the registry. I also see suggestions to grant the Network Service explicit rights to the computer using dcomcnfg.   No dice.
I've flattened and re-loaded.  Actually on a second machine with a newer image from Acer (first machine had a bad microSD socket that would not eject).  2nd machine exhibits the same symptoms - failing to backup
Compared settings to another Windows 8 machine - VSS service by default is manual and no explicit permission grants were in place.  e.g. changes above were unnecessary but made just the same as part of trouble-shooting
Clearly there is something more fundamental that I'm missing?  All other machines are running Windows 8 Pro or Enterprise.  This machine is running Windows 8 b... Read more

Hi,

I set the maximum shadow copy storage space to 8 GB in my Vista and thought I should never worry about the space in my system disk. However, I have just found the Used Shadow Copy Storage space is bigger than the Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space at the moment:

Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 10.326 GB
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 10.573 GB
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 8 GB

Do you know why and how to limite the Used Shadow Copy Starage space?
Thank you for any suggestions!

A:Used Shadow Copy Storage space is bigger than the Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space !

It would be helpful if you filled in the System Specs. That way if you post on another issue people answering don't have to ask the same questions about your hardware over again, or search for the post with the info. Just push the specs link in every one of your posts.

I'm not sure how they measure the space usage. But 8 GB sounds like only a couple of restore points. How big is the HD? I suspect when deciding to discard an old restore point it looks at the current usage. If under the limit, it keeps all the old and makes another. That's just a guess on my part. But you can try a few different max numbers and see how it acts for yourself. As Yogi Berra said, "you can observe a lot by watchin'".

After a virus messing up my computer, the only solution to fixing it is to reinstall windows, however i have many files that i would like to copy to a CD so i don't lose them, the problem is that since the virus i can't copy or paste, i can't drag files, so i can't move them, and i can't use windows explorer or nero to burn files to a cd, as none of these work anymore. (reinstalling nero also didn't work)

Could anyone suggest a program or something that i could download so that i can burn my files to cd?

Anytime I attempt to open, rename, move, click on, or in any way manipulate an .avi file, windows explorer encounters an error. I am prompted: Data Execution PreventionTo Help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.Name: Windows ExplorerIf I tried opening with a media player, it closes as well. I receive the following error:Access violation at address 00000000. Read of address 00000000 AVG reported a shell32 change and windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts change, citing no specific file. After accepting the changes, AVG no longer displays these files as expected. Troubleshooting includes removing Zplayer, leaving only windows media player and previously installed codecs. I have never had a problem opening any of these avis before. I can open mpgs without any problems. Adaware and Spybot found only tracking cookies. Nothing from stinger. These errors began occurring after installing a few trial Zune Video Converter programs, all of which have been removed. Subsequently, I transported the PC in my car, as securely as possible so that it did not bounce around. Issue: Client's computer (infected with malware, spyware, autolaunching IE to foreign porn sites, etc) needed thorough cleaning and optimization. He expressed that data preservation was crucial, the single HDD was the only location for certain mp3s and photos.

Steps I've Taken: cleared viruses with clamav (using linux boot disk)
launched Windows repair with official XP discs

New Problem: Installation is stuck, cannot copy .dll files during stage 4 of installation.
Inserted Service Pack 1 and 2 upon Windows prompting, encountered same issue.

I have no idea if his data is still there, I CAN do a data recovery if necessary but that does very little to resolve the Windows installation issue.

I did check the cables, the RAM, the cds/dvds I'm using, etc.

Anyone got advice, or have you encountered this issue before?
The only logical solution I can think of is to run Trinity or GetDataBack and back up his data, wipe the drive, and reinstall... I'm not even 100% sure that will fix it, but I'd like to get feedback from those wiser than I before going through that process. (I'm concerned the issue will repeat itself even after the recovery). I'm hoping there's a simple factor I'm neglecting that you guys can bring to light...

Dude, step 1, cover your ***. It's not your fault that he has one single copy of critical files. His system is FUBAR, everything you do is under the expectation that the customer is clear that it's his own risk. Get this is written form if you can (email).

As for suggestions, I'd copy the files across to a portable HDD, then make sure all files are clean. Proceed to do a clean install of XP, because who runs SP1 ....

Then put files back to a fresh system.

Customer has two options:
1. Highly risky operation to attempt repair, will take unknown time, may not even work, high $$$.
2. Perform extraction of data, clean install. Fairly static time and $$$.

Hi New to this forum.
For the first 3 years I had no probs using Windows Backup. The last 2 years I constantly get the message, "A shadow copy could not be created due to insufficent storage space. I set the backup to go to an external hard drive WD elements drive 1 terabyte size. All system services are working properly. I've looked at the system vol partition and have 37.1 mg out of 100mg available. The error message I keep getting is 08X81000019. Also tells me to check the VSS logs and SPP application event logs. I'm somewhat of a novice about this stuff.
Anyone have any suggestions to help, would appreciate very much if I could get this system working again
Thanks in advence

Hi I'm pretty new to vista having just purchased a laptop. I'm having trouble adjusting shadow copy's properties to use less hd space because it is using my space like there is no tomorrow. Every time I try to adjust it with the command prompt (I'm under admin) I get an error

Heres an example of me attempting a few commands.
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]

C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=10gb

vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.

If anyone could give me a hand or point me in the right direction I would appreciate.

P.S. I hope I posted this in the right section. If not please forgive seeing as I'm new to this site.

I was just looking around and run into this program: Access Hard Drive Snapshots with ShadowCopyView - MajorGeeks

After examining part of my system with it I noticed that some folders tend to be huge and taking a lot of space. Now, I'm not cramped for space but looks like shadow copy of just windows folder has almost 40GB.
It seems to be dependent on System restore, would turning it off make all shadow copies disappear ?

Hi everyone. I am trying to backup my computer to an external hdd and I continue to receive an error message stating that the shadow copy could not be created. I have researched on the internet concerning this issue, but the troubleshooting did not fix the problem. I have performed a backup before to this hard drive and was successful. Any clue to what is wrong? Any assistance will be appreciated. deanie44

I create backups using Acronis Trueimage, so do I need Shadow Copy, which is taking up space? Just concerned with C drive.

A:Is shadow copy necessary?

Others may know more, but I believe Volume Shadow Copy is what System Restore uses. If you don't use it you can disable.delete it. The Shadow is also used for Windows Image Backup.

In Disk Cleanup, Under Cleanup System Files- If you delete all but last restore points and Shadow Copies, It says backup shadow copies will be deleted also. Does that mean that Image backups that you have made will not restore?

I don't think so. I always delete restore points and still refresh from a backup no problem.

In 'Backup and Restore' page of Windows 7, when I click on 'Create System Image' in the left navigation pane, a window comes up and says "Creating a Shadow Copy". Could you please tell me:

1. What is a 'Shadow Copy'?

2. Is it the same size as the system image or compressed?

3. Where is it stored?

4. Can I access this and transfer elsewhere for saving?

Thank you,

Shadow Copy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Above is something of an explanation. As I understand it, shadow copying is used by Windows Backup and also by Windows System Restore.

I don't use Windows Backup, but if I recall correctly the backup must be in its default location to restore properly. Is that the root of C?? I can't recall as I don't use it. I think you can move them, but before restoration you have to move them back to the default location.

System Restore points are relatively small. I have a dozen now and they take up 8 GB combined---whereas a single image file might take up 15 GB on my PC. System Restore points only back up certain types of Windows files.

I have no idea of the relative size of an image made by Windows Backup versus the size of an image made by some other program.

Windows Backup is too complex and finicky for me, so I just use another program.

Anybody, help! Quite desperate as this is affecting my work.

Sometime ago, I installed AGV as there seemed to be lil bugs in my comp that Norton could not get. AGV managed to detect and delete these bugs, but not all problems were solved. Norton's subscription was up and I was still quite peeved about Norton's inability to help...so I uninstalled it. Since then, there were more problems...

1) I'm unable to run help from Start...or msconfig from Start/Run or system restore. The error message is that it can't find the file. Even when I go to explorer to double-click the file directly, it still won't run.

2) I'm unable to open ANY file with MS word or powerpoint. It would say that the file is unavailable. It would also prompt me to replace existing normal.dot file. I'm unable to do the detect and repair, it would say error 1706...I do not have the installation CD with me anymore!

3) I'm unable to run any online virus scan (Trend, Panda...) even after I made changes to the security settings to allow for ActiveX.

4) I'm tried to reinstall Norton, but it can't run. It says 'CFGWIZ.EXE - Unable to locate component. . . . cctrust.dll was not found.'

I do run Spybot, Adaware, AGV, Winaso regularly.

Please help...thanks!

I have a sys with ASUS M2MX mobo, AMD X2 4600+ Proc, 2GB RAM, 500 GB SATA HDD running on Win 7 Ultimate. I'm unable to copy files from hard drive to a 4 GB Kingston pen drive. I tried different OS - XP, Vista and Win 7. It gives the same error ..............[An unexpected error is preventing the operation. Make note of the error code, which might be useful if you get additional help to resolve this problem: Error 0x8007045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Try again, skip and cancel]. After the error is displayed the drive disappears from the explorer and need to reconnect. Sometimes it wipes out all the old files that are already there in the pen drive and asks to format the pen drive. The Format doesn't complete saying Windows was unable to complete the format.

1. It copies files less that 2 MB.
2. Can copy the files from pen drive to hard drive.
3. The pen drive works on other machines.
4. Doesn't work in Safe Mode either.
5. Tried several OS and different USB ports.
6. Flashed BIOS and Chipset driver.
