[Resolved] Reoccurring home page

Q: [Resolved] Reoccurring home page

I have a web page that keeps reoccuring and I have reset and gotten rid of the cookies and even have went into the registry. I have followed the post "Internet Home Page" and "Certain website won't stop making itself the home page." Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ok, I was having some problems doing anything, running slower than dialup on a broadband connection. Thought I might have done something to IE, so I "Reset Internet explorer Settings" No help: I also uninstalled and reinstalled IE7. Now things SEEM to be running ok, but I am having one problem. Even before I reinstalled, when I tried to set my home page, I can't. When I delete the existing homepage or when I go into the internet options to reset it there, when I exit out, it resets to what it was before I made the changes. I am trying to make yahoo my home page; clicking "make this my home page" doesn't do it either. I had it set before! Arrgh: tears hair:

I am changing this post after finding some more information on this. I am running Norton Security Suite. Is there any other program I might try that might find what caused this problem? I recently uninstalled and reinstalled IE7due to an unrelated problem. This inability to change my home page may have been going in for a while, just I haven't been looking for it. I'm REALLY hesitant to start mucking around with clean boots and the like on my own.

I have a Sony laptop running Win XP Home and IE 6 on a Linksys wireless (signal sharing only) network. I am unable to change my IE home page to something other than what I currently have (Google).

I have done spyware scans with AdAware, Spybot, and Windows Defender, along with a full system virus scan with AVG, and cannot find the creature that is preventing me from re-setting my home page. I have tried with Zone Alarm enabled and disabled. Any suggestions where I look next?

Much appreciated - Kermit2

I use Internet Explorer (6.0 I think). When I go to Internet options and attempt to change my home page, It WILL change, but only for about 30 seconds, and then it reverts back to the old one (www.iwon.com).

The weird part about this is this: that's not even Iwon's web address apparently. I think it's now home.iwon.com or something like that.

I merely want to switch to another home page and am constantly denied this option. PLEASE HELP!

Can anyone please help.

My home page has been changed to an unwanted search engine which has the address, use blank. At the same time I get pop-ups regarding spy-ware. Also since this happened I cannot activate my desktop icons without being online If I do the computer just freezes and I have to reboot. I have tried many things including re-setting web settings and I have used spy-bot search and destroy and ad-aware but I just can't remove them. I understand that the only other method would be to re-install windows or re-set the registry. Any advice.

Thanks

Hi paul.m, and welcome to TSG

I'm not a security expert but there are some who donate their expertise on this site. However they will want to see a copy of a "HijackThis" (HJT) log to help you properly.

If the hijack is really bad (i.e. fast) try and download startpage guard as a temporary measure to keep you on the one page and then download and run SpywareBlaster (this is a preventative to help stop further infections) and CWShredder and also check for updates on Ad-Aware and spybot to see whether you have the very latest versions.

Also, get HijackThis (HJT) and if there still problems, post a HJT log here and wait for one of the security experts to get to you.

For Spyware tools, some sites to download from are:

Also to safeguard your system against unwanted installs do this -

In IE go Tools > Options > Advanced look under Browsing for two boxes marked Install on Demand - if they are ticked then untick them. It will prevent a whole host of things such as XXX Dialers automatically installing - instead you will be prompted to install and you can of course decline.

Hi Robert,

If you have SpyBot S&D installed, go to the "Immunize" section. Is "Lock IE Start Page Settings" ticked?
If so, uncheck it.

If that isn't the case, go to Start/run, and type Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel
Is the subkey called 'Control Panel' indeed there, rightclick it, and choose delete from the context menu.
Close Regedit

Also check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer for a possible "Control Panel" subkey, and delete that one as well if it exists.

NOTE: Before editing the Registry, ALWAYS back it up, export the key you're going to edit, or alternatively, in the case of Win ME or XP, create a Restore Point.

Cheers,

We have a domain environment with the roughly 300 computers.  Almost all the computers are Windows 7 and we have has the default home page define my GPO for years.

July 2017 we had about 50 Computers change the default  homepage that points to a Microsoft link that redirects to a msn page. The msn page is no longer a valid page.  I cannot find a pattern between the computers,  The policies are
still apply and it just does not reset the default webpage for the user profile.  If you reset the Internet explorer settings everything works as normal and he gets the policy homepage.

I ruled out malware  with multiple tools could find nothing to suggest it had been hijacked.

If I log into a different  user account on the same computer that user account does not have the same problem.  My Theory was a old Microsoft patch some how did this, but I could not find a patch that had ran on the affected PC's.

Sorry to start a new thread, but most of the stuff I've read here is older and doesn't seem to apply.

Running Sys 7 and Firefox ver. 26. Yahoo hijacks my home page. I've run a variety of malware programs with no joy. I suspect Yahoo has installed a "hidden" add-on, although I'm not 100% sure of that. I've uninstalled anything that has Yahoo connected to it also Spigot...no joy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Don

Do you mean you have another topic covering the same problem?

If so, you should post that you are receiving help here and mark the topic solved otherwise you might end up with conflicting advice.

Now

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will produce a log called (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run from.
Please copy and paste log back here.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please also paste that into your reply.

I removed dosearch.com from my list of home pages in internet options but it still comes up when first going online. I have found info about it online but they are mostly web pages that offer a bunch of costly removal tools which makes me wonder if they are in on it.

Recently, I changed DSL providers from Earthlink to another company. I did this for two reasons: the Earthlink throughput was awful, and their tech support was virtually useless. After numerous attempts to get the speed problems resolved I finally gave up. Upon ordering the new provider's service, I uninstalled Earthlink from my PC. Problem is, no matter what I do, my IE home page is the Earthlink start page. I have used the IE options to change it, it goes right back to Earthlink. I have changed it in the registry, it goes right back to Earthlink. I have checked for spyware/adware, run registry cleaner, you name it. Is my PC going to be forever haunted by Earthlink? I have XP home edition, latest version. Can someone rid me of this troublesome home page?

Hi noroots

Welcome to TSG!

Click here to download CWShredder. UnZip the file, close all browser windows and click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

When it is finished Restart your computer.

IMPORTANT!: To help prevent this from happening again, I strongly recommend you install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits.

The simplest way to make sure you have all the security patches is to go to Windows update and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs"

Go here and download Adaware 6 Build 181

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest referencefiles.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window :Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal a... Read more

Hi:
This problem is either Networking/connection or XP issue, but I want to find out what's the problem is.

The issue is that whenever start-up PC/XP, 'not connected,' page appears instead Home-Page. After a couple of second, it shows 'now connected' in the rectangular-box at the right bottom of corner of task-bar and I need to click to open 'Home-Page' manually although I set 'I.E.' on start-up to open Home-Page automatically.

It appears to me that my ISP is slow connection, but of course I can not be sure.

How to open up Home-Page, instead seeing 'not connected' page?

Thanks for your help in advance.

A:'Not connected' Page instead "Home Page'

You Network Adapter loads last on your computer and it takes up to a minute to connect to the internet. So, everything else is going to load first before you can access a web page. So, if you have IE set to open with Windows, it is going to show a not connected message until you get an internet connection. Better to not have IE load at startup and just be patient. You can also, just leave your computer on and the internet connection always on.

Any advice will be greatly apreciated. Thank you!

The web site material is in the hard drive so it has not been lost.

There are two MAIN causes:

1.The most common one is connecting to the internet AFTER you have opened FrontPage.
To fix this:

Shut down FrontPage.
Disconnect from the Internet
Reconnect to the Internet.
Open Up FrontPage.

2. You aren't connected to the internet

I have tried disabling all add ons and I even restored from a date when the web site did display properly. Neither solved the problem.

I can live with this problem if it doesn't get worse but if I keep losing sites, it will become a career problem since I need the web for research.

Any help is appreciated.

If you encounter a site which does not recognize Internet Explorer 7, a new tool known as the User Agent String Utility has been created to help you work around the problem. The utility comes in the form of a small executable that opens an Internet Explorer 7 instance that emulates Internet Explorer 6 by sending the Internet Explorer 6 user agent string. It also provides a mechanism for you to report problem web sites to Microsoft so that we can follow up with the affected site owners.

A:[Resolved] Cannot View 1 (One) web page

Frequently problems like that are caused by the presence of a "hosts" file which associates Domain names with IPs. When the IPs change there is a failure to communicate.

Do a file search for hosts and if you find one with no extension, not hosts.sam or lmhosts.sam, try renaming it ghosts

Hosts is not an active file by default, but is created and used by 3rd party programs for filtering, faster domain name resolution, ad blocking, etc. A fresh folder will probably created by any software that wants it.

"the page cannot be displayed"

This is what I see where there should be an ad. The ad at the top and bottom of this page show that. The problem is that my browser tries to open it and the pages often takes over a minute to load. I first discovered this on ragingbull.com where every page takes a minute(+) to load.

My info:
win98SE
IE6.0
256RAM
900 mhz

Problem may be related to Incredimail. My wife downloaded this mail program and we enjoyed the extra features but this was about when the pages started to load very slowly. I have since uninstall Incredimail but still have this problem.

Have tried the following:
scandisk
defrag
searched this site
reinstalled windows
reinstalled IE6.0(full-this only did the items that were not in bold print)

Not sure where to go from here. Have viewed source and properties of these ads for clues but I don't really know what I'm looking for.

This may have nothing to do with my problem, but I found it strange that this happened at the same time I starting getting this proble. The real date was 9/16/2002, but the date on my computer was 9/17/2014. I changed it back.
I went to browse the internet, my homepage is yahoo.com, i typed in a search and got the message "Cannot display this page. Hit the refresh button, or check your browser options." The message gave me things to look at in Internet options/Connections. I matched with the things it said should be checked.

(I apologize for not having the exact wording with me. Since I have no access to this site from my computer now, I have to post from my work computer. If needed, I will get the exact wording of the entire message)

I went back to yahoo and selected the mail link. I got the same message. I am frustrated because I can access the internet, but i can't do anything. I tried to open my Kazaa (file sharing) and all I get is Connecting.... in the bottom right corner.
