G580 Laptop BIOS setup not starting

Q: G580 Laptop BIOS setup not starting

Hello,I've a Lenovo G580 Laptop (2nd Gen PDC B960, 2 GB, 500 GB, DOS) When I bought it came pre-installed DOS, and then I install Windows 7 ultimate (32-bit, i didn't know at that time, 2nd gen PDC are 64-bit). My friend recommend me to disable UEFI from boot setup before installing any non-genuine OS, so I did disable that. My laptop is working fine, but all of a sudden it started to do random mouse freezes, surprisingly pressing ALT+F4 works like a charm to make mouse work again (by mouse I mean pointer actually, I'm using Touchpad, i don't think its a h/w related issue)I think may be it's because any virus/malware or whatever that was, and also I was planning to change my OS to Windows 8 (it's after 10-11 month of purchase date), so I decided to format anyway, instead messing up with mouse freeze problem. Now strange thing happen at this point -I'm not able to start my BIOS setup, nor able to use quick boot option (to select various bootable device option from list)I try to press recovery key (small button near power button), that open recovery module properly (no glitch/error).but unfortunately I don't have any backup made previously so no use of recovery module.and then I restart my laptop, then I press F2, it shows the first screen of BIOS menu, but my system stuck there (unresponsive state), i've no option else directly turning it off by holding power key for few seconds,..and then no boot menu F2, F12 still unresponsive.means whenever i open recovery module it able to open F2 menu (not F12) but that stuck too.else it just completely ignore F2, F12I'm not a computer noob (not flaunting), but I spend last 4-5 hours looking for a solution for it, but couldn't find any solution by myself.although my laptop is not in not working state. somehow I manage to install windows 8, but it's really weird that I can not access BIOS menu, my laptop is no longer in warranty period so I can experiment with it any way I want.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi envolt,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that G580 is not entering the BIOS menu and hanging at BIOS menu it at all it enters it, performing flee power should resolve the issue; below are is the step to perform Flee Power.

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer and enter BIOS menu.
If the issue persists even after performing Flee Power, I would Strongly Suggest Calling Technical Support for Assistance this is the only available option to get this query resolved, Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number, I?m sure they will be a great help.

Do post us back if the issue still persists.

Best Regards

Dear sir,I bought a Lenovo G580 [59337032] laptop about a month ago.It had no OS installed. I installed Fedora 17 in it.But after installing Fedora, I can't be able to access the BIOS setup menu by pressing F2.And also my boot order rearranged. While pressing F12 during boot, the boot devices list appears. But the first entry is Fedora, 2nd is Ethernet, 3rd is HDD, 4th is DVD drive.I found a similar problem in this forum. But the solution [disconnect the HDD and press F2 during boot]of that problem did not work in my case. I also deleted the recovery partion of lenovo. My BIOS version is 62CN34WW How can I fix my BIOS? Now my OS is Windows7.

Hi

I got a new Lenovo G580 laptop which did not come with any pre-installed OS. I installed Ubuntu in UEFI mode (I had not disabled UEFI/Secure Boot). Later I installed Windows 7. During installation it asked me to format the entire format as it did not recognize the GPT partition. Accordingly without thinking twice I erased the entire HDD and installed Windows 7. Now I am unable to enter into BIOS

Things I have tried:
Tried with F2, F1 and Delete keys while booting
Tried removing the battery and booting while pressing the above keys individually
Tried removing the battery and adapter, held the power button for 1 minute
Tried removing the battery and held the power button for 1 minute while the adapter was plugged in
Tried pressing F12 and going to the APP MENU but I can only see "Diagnostic Splash" Nothing else and in that diagnostic splash screen I see that the System BIOS is "shadowed"
How can i gain access to BIOS so I can disable UEFI and install Win 7 and Ubuntu side by side

would someone help me about my problem on my Toshiba satellite A105-S2712 OS Installation.

Windows XP pro OS installation freezes on "Setup is starting windows". What woul be the possible problem of my laptop?
I tried to download a driver for SCSI/mass storage device but i can't search on the net. Would someone also send me a driver for SCSI/mass storage device driver for my laptop?

Thanks in advance and hoping for your advice.

A:Winxp Installation On Toshiba A105 Laptop Freezes On "setup Is Starting Windows"

Are you reloading from the Toshiba supplied recovery CD/DVD's? If so, the most likely cause is a scratched or dirty CD/DVD.

If it's a regular Windows installation CD, then it's likely to be either the scratched or dirty CD/DVD or a hardware compatibility that isn't covered in the standard XP installation media.

From my research your laptop has a 60 gB IDE hard drive - so the SCSI/Mass Storage driver won't be likely to help your issue here (often the Mass Storage device on laptops is actually the SD Card reader)

Have you tested the hard drive (with a bootable diagnostic available for free from most hard drive manufacturers)? That could be causing these issues also.

Purchased ProBook 470 G4 without OS, just Free DOS. System came with limited system/owner manuals. I expected a BIOS tutorial of some sort. Have searched HP articles, data base and the forum, I am not able to find anything. All BIOS settings are mostly set to Legacy. The default options, "Apply Factory Defaults" and "Apply Custom Defaults" are mostly the same with a few changes, still Legacy. Could use some direction as too how to obtain some walk through BIOS settings information for Windows 10 64 install? I can fumble around with the settings, some are mostly straight forward but I would preffer doing it correctly the first time to prevent from doing re-installs. Thanks,Mark

Here is the Service Manual: Service Manual Here is the User Guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05306576 The sections on Setup (BIOS) and UEFI appear to be the same. Windows 10 will actually install in Legacy or Secure boot mode but you want to install in secure boot mode. You should have that boot option under the security tab in the BIOS...tap esc as you power up and go into Setup (F10). Not much more you really need to do other than change boot order (F9) to boot from your Windows 10 install media (thumb drive or DVD).

Hello. I recently bought a new laptop(HP Pavilion Notebook - 17-g101nu) and had to reinstall my windows, because I added a SSD. Anyway, after reinstalling and putting all the updates from the HP website, I updated the BIOS as well. And It suddenly started making problems. I usually leave my laptop on sleep mode, but the last few days I just come home and hear the laptop working, while stil being closed. Also I often lose my wireless connection at home and at the office I work at, and can not even get wired internet connection - it recognizes that there is a cable plugged, but no internet connection.I had a friend, who had the first problem(self starting computer) on an Asus, an It was because of the BIOS update. So should I downgrade it(and how), or should I look somewhere else for the problem?

I did recently;
-Startup Repair; but doesn't solve the issue.
-I disassemble my notebook/laptop I thought it has a CMOS battery
-Load Default Settings of BIOS; still doesn't change anything.

Sometimes the BIOS Setup doesn't appear in starting up but it shows a message that something like there's a problem in BIOS, I forgot the exact message then below there's a choice:
Press F1 to run Setup.
Press F2 to load defaults.................etc.

Pressing F1 it goes me to BIOS Setup
Pressing F2 the windows loads normally

A:BIOS Setup always show in turning on a Notebook/Laptop

It does sound like a failing (or failed) CMOS battery. Is the BIOS clock/date resetting itself to the same time/date? What is the make and full model number of the laptop/notebook?

Hi,

I tried to restore days ago and I turned it off during this same screen and it came up with an Install Windows error "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation", but I fixed it by diabling some devices and it worked, but now it's stuck. So I bought a new CPU for my old G580 laptop. I wanted to upgrade from the B960 it has right now (it's the 20150 model). The new CPU is a i5-3320M as it's listed as a compatible part on both the downloadable PDF and the PartsLookup website (I checked with my serial number as well). I changed the CPU, installed thermal paste, everything, but to no avail. Won't even enter BIOS. The "on" LED flashes for 10 seconds, then it shuts down. Installed the old CPU again - it boots without problems. New CPU again - no BIOS, nothing. I have updated my BIOS to the latest possible version (version 5ECN96WW (V9.01), as the newer version shows a "Error 255 - TDK Library Initialization Failed". I just don't know what to do anymore. Could be a faulty CPU, but I doubt it. The only difference is that the old CPU is Sandy Bridge, and the new is Ivy Bridge. But it's shown as "compatible" with the laptop everywhere. It's a shame really...

2011 Vaio laptop, windows 7, and that's all I know about the computer. It's my daughter's. Her infant son banged the keyboard, making the screen freeze. It then rebooted and got stuck on Start-up repair or something...I don't remember now, that was a few days ago. We left it for hours, but it didn't go any further. So I tried other remedies:
1. Removed battery and power cord and held power button for 30 seconds. No change.
2. Reboot in safe mode. It wouldn't even go into safe mode.
3. Rebooted to last good configuration. Still wouldn't boot.
4. Tried to run Windows 7 repair disc. Wouldn't go past the third step.
5. Removed the hard drive and replaced it with one known to be working, and it just blue-screened and died.

Now it doesn't even get to the startup repair screen. It is on a blue screen that says "Setup is starting". And it stays on that screen.
Hope someone can help!

Hey there, I've got a problem with my new G580 2698.After installing Win7, I can't access BIOS. When I'm pressing F2, nothing happens - I even tried all those other fancy things like pressing/holding B and many other ways. I simply can't. There's no "Please wait" or anything. OneKey Rescue System boots system normally into Win7. Also there's no "setup" entry or anything other than Diagnostic Splash in the F12-boot menu's "Apps"-section. This is bad because it hinders me to boot anything in UEFI-mode. Everything else kinda works (got a running Win7 machine). Is there a way to reflash the BIOS? It's the 62CN42WW one. Maybe that will solve my problem? Also any other hints are welcome. Thank you and good dayAstfgl_

A friend had a malware attack, a beeping error on Chrome about a Windows Defender error running Win 10. She managed to shut down Chrome and then shut off her computer. She tried turn back on, but it would not. I managed to start the computer by removing battery , AC power and the bios battery. The only way to turn on is to remove all of the above and then reinsert bios battery and connect AC power. The keyboard does not work properly, types mostly 6s and a few other characters (ie the shift key types an 's'). No wifi, no CD, no mouse touchpad. I can get into Windows 8, which I restored from factory partiton. Did not affect the operation. I assumed that the bios must have been over written, so I downloaded an update, but it will not install. Program goes through the motions, but the old bios is still there. I am using an external USB KB and mouse. I still can not get into the bios. Is there a way to "force" a bios update?

Hello, The Problem:Recently I installed Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS  to my HDD in UEFI mode. Soon I found out that I could not access the BIOS using F2, but F12 allowed selection of boot device. Reinstalling Windows, I found out that the boot menu still had the Ubuntu entry and I still could not access the BIOS. I searched on the web for a solution and before I could manage to find a proper one, I managed to delete both the ubuntu and windows boot manager boot entries, still locked out of bios. This time I could not boot into any OS, could not access bios using f2 nor access boot menu using f12.  The Solution:There was one last hope, during boot I noticed that PXE (Boot via ethernet option was still showing).Note: This solution requires you to update the BIOS. This is a very risky procedure, so proceed with caution. This will also probably void your warranty. If you can access boot menu (F12) and want to regain access to the BIOS (F2), boot into Windows 7. Install a bios update for your laptop (specifically for your laptop) available at The Lenovo Support Site. The oldest BIOS (probably for Windows 7) is preffered. If you donot have access to windows 7, perform step 2 and boot into the created ISO by creating a bootable CD or pendrive. Then goto step 11.If you can't access F12 and F2, cannot boot into OS, but can boot via Ethernet (there should be a message about trying Atheros Ethernet PXE Boot during startup), start from step 1. My rule of thumb with BIOS updates is "if it is not broke, do not try to fix it" because there is always an inherent risk that a BIOS update can fail, and if so, leave  the system bricked (dead) requirnig a new motherboard, and there does not appear to be anything in the latest updates readme.txt other than specific fixes for Windows 8.1... So I would hold off. Summary of changes

hello, recently i had to clean install windows 10 32 bit on my laptop (g580-20157) and while installation i found that the bios version is 62CN31WW. i realised that i have never updated the bios to next version. there are two updates which i missed,  62CN44WW for windows 7 and 62CN97WW for windows 8. the problem is, the support page on lenovo asks to downgrade to windows 7 to update bios to 62CN44WW and upgrade to windows 8 to get the 62CN97WW. as it was clean install the windows 7 got deleted from my laptop. is there any solution such that i can avoid downgrading and yet update the bios to latest version?

Hi berserk9999,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your G580 Laptop is not entering the BIOS menu, and the BIOS can also be entered by pressing the OKR (One Key Recovery) button just beside the Power button and select advanced setup in the menu to enter BIOS.

Hope this helps!!!

Do post us back for further queries.

Best Regards

Shiva Kumar

Hello Everyone, Its a much discussed yet embarassing problem. I have a G580 with intel i3 processor. The machine is quite old (5 years i think) and has been subject to various OS upgrades, changes, flashes, dual boots systems like ubuntu & windows. Recently to upgrade the machine i bought an i7 processor (yes it is compatible, i checked the hardware manuals). Once installed  the display wont come on, i figured i needed a BIOS update. Thats where the terrible stuff started. I tried using the BIOS update tool downloaded from the official lenovo website with windows 10. As soon as i launched it, the command prompt like window opened and my computer froze. That happned a few times. Figuring, it might resolve itself I left it alone for 3 hours but it was still frozen. Also figuring that the tool is for windows 7 i ran it on compatibility mode. Still the same result. I read on some forum a guy had the same issue and it was resolved by reverting to windows 7. So i bought a new copy of windows 7 (yes i really want that i7 processor). Installed it and tried to run the tool. Still, it froze the minute the window opened (another 3 hour gesticulation time was given to he machine to unfreeze itself but in vain). So i tried to access the bios to see if there was a supervisor password preventing me from entering. Thats when i discovered that i could nnot access the bios at all. Ive attached some screenshots in the end to explain. Startup... Read more

Please assist as I did the following steps to access the BIOS, it hangs:1. Shut down the computer2. Press the "Recovery Button" NOT THE POWER BUTTON (A small round button with curve arrow sign which is located on the left side of the Power Button just next to the dust removal opening on the left side of the laptop)3. Selected the BIOS Setup and nothing happens. I cannot even choose the boot option. If I put a pendrive with ubuntu, It picks it up, but not the Windows pendrive. My original HDD has bad sectors and cannot clone it. Any Ideas on how to help me?
