Q: Mapped network drives randomly disconnecting

I have a problem with mapped network drives in my organization. About a week ago our helpdesk started reporting calls from users saying their mapped drives said they were disconnected. At that time it was only a few people at another site that were experiencing this. This week we've been seeing it happening at all sites. The strange thing is sometimes the drive will be marked as disconnected, but upon clicking it, it opens up. Other times it says access is denied. A temporary fix we've been using is to delete all local profiles on the machines that have been experiencing this. I'm wondering if this is an issue with the user profiles that's somehow preventing the drives from mapping or if it's an issue with the permissions. I'm reluctant to think it's a permission issue since prior to a week ago all drives were mapping normally. All machines are running xp pro. Thanks in advance for the help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

I'd check offline files and make sure that it and "offline synchronization" are disabled.

I've experienced this as well, and so far my best guess has been with the offline files feature.

File Server: Windows 2003 Server

Client: Windows 8.1 Pro


The client is not a part of the domain which the file server and obviously the domain controller are. The mapped drives are added on the client using DOMAIN\User (along with password).

Every morning when coming into the office, I have to reboot my machin ein order to get my mapped drives back. This is very annoying. The same issue when I log in remotely (using RDP) when working at night. I have to then reboot the machine in order to gain access to my mapped drives.
It seems at random, my mapped drives (residing on the file server) goes away. It has happened once while I was actively working on the client. But daily the above issue occurs.

I'm at a loss to what to try. Most issues I've seen are related to mapped drives disappears when the machine is rebooted, but my issue is reversed, so those fixes I've tried that has been suggested do not apply or work.

Any help in finding a solution to the very annoying problem is greatly welcomed.

Side Note: Windows XP and Windows 7 machine do not have this issue and they add the mapped drives in exactly the same way.

Last summer we bought 120 HP Probooks 6570b running Windows 7 Pro. I been running into a issue with our mapped network drives on our server. We have these drives so that people can save their files to and take from. For whatever reason whenever you try to access the drive to either share or pull files from, it will randomly disconnect saying that it cannot find/access the "S" drive. Sometimes it takes 5 seconds to disconnect sometimes a few minutes (pretty random) but it definitely disconnects if more than a few people try pulling a file from it. None of the other laptops/workstations in the building are having this issue. These are working right off the wifi by the way and I know we have plenty of access points close enough to the laptops. So far what I have tried is this (suggested by HP support):
-Update to the most current Wifi Driver
-Update the BIOS firmware
-Went into Device Manager >Power Management Options for the wifi and unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
-Went into regedit > HKLM> system >CurrentControlSet> services > LanmanWorkstation > Parameters > and added DWORD 32bit > KeepConn for 15180. I googled this, this step supposedly tells the computer to hold its network connection for a full day. Still didn't work.

Here is the problem

Running a peer to peer XP network at my sister's church.
8 computers in the workgroup.
Not using a domain , only a workgroup.

New Dell computer was purchased to be used as Bookkeeper Computer.

Church software files were moved from old bookkeeper computer to new one.
All other computers set up as workstations. Software runs and is installed thur mapped network drive.

The problems is that everytime we restart any workstation computers they lose the mapped drive. If you browse the network to access Bookkeeper computer you must give logon name and password to access that computer. After you log on then you can map network drive and use software.

It never work that way before the new Dell computer and always stayed mapped without logon info. I can easily access any other computer on the network with out logging on .

Church Software support says it is a network problem. But what is baffling to me is that you must use church software logon info to access the Bookkeeper computer.

Is this a logon or user account setting problem on the new Dell?

Software support told me that Bookkeeper computer had to be logged on a network administrator. I have it set to logon automatically (go to welcome screen) . I changed it in user account setting to go to windows logon screen but did not seem to help (not using a password)

Any suggestions? Help!!!!

I have a Win2k server holding a shared folder. I have multiple Win98 workstations mapped to that share. The workstations, however, are randomly disconnecting from the share. They are configured to reconnect at logon, and there are no issues with connectivity to the server (that I am currently aware of as the workstations are able to logon to domain). When one workstation disconnects the network drive mapping, it is seemingly affecting those workstations in close proximity, and those workstations are disconnecting as well.

The issue is random. It is not consistent as to time, or actual physical workstation.

I am running out of ideas as to what might be causing this issue.

Weird issue.

I have 5 drives (of 7) on a Win 7 Pro (64) computer mapped on a Win XP (SP3) computer on my home network ... IT connects to ALL 5 ...

YET, that same Win XP computer will NOT access those same 5 drives (on the Win 7 computer) through the network (unmapped) giving the message "\\hostname\X is not accessible" (but WILL connect to the other 2 drives). All 7 drives have the same sharing and security settings ...

Baffled ... any ideas????

Server has been great and online for about 7 months without issue.  Three times over the last two weeks, all clients' mapped drives just drop and Windows Explorer hangs...  I am not able to disconnect drives via command prompt, nor remap drives
via command prompt.  However, I can ping the server and remote desktop to the server perfectly.  No errors in logs on workstations or server.  Affects all workstations (60+ running Windows 7 Pro) simultaneously.  Client mappings to
other servers (Windows 2008 R2) running on the same switch are unaffected.  Reboot the 2012 server and you can reconnect to mapped drives by clicking on them in Windows Explorer.  Any ideas?

This is all on my home network - both PCs are local to each other.

I have a Win 8.1 PC which hosts all my media and documents, which I connect to via remote desktop and share a drive on the network. It has no monitor, so remote desktop is my main method of access.

Very occasionally, I will turn it on and be unable to connect to it or the mapped drive. In fact my main PC (Win 7) cannot find it on the network anywhere. But it IS on the network - I can connect via my mobile using Splashtop and I can also connect
via TeamViewer from the main PC. This is not a solution though as I need to be able to access the shared drive on my main PC.

Both PCs use Bitdefender. Makes no difference with the BD firewall temporarily turned off. As I mentioned, sometimes it connects fine with no issues and sometimes it can't find it. In these situations, I can't even ping the Media PC's IP address
(timeout), nor can the Media PC ping the main PC. It can, obviously, ping the router.

Usually a restart of the Media PC fixes this (although, that's annoying) - but today it isn't. The error that I get is 'The network path was not found' and for remote desktop 'Remote Desktop can't find the computer 'MediaServer". This might
mean it does not belong to the specified network ..." etc.

mapped 2 network drives (reconnect at next logon). now when i start the computer the 2 drives show a red X on the icon. this is because Vista is initializing the drives (telling me 192.168.xxx.xxx is not accessible) BEFORE the network connection is fully up and running (i have tried both static IP and DHCP). i can open the drives once the LAN connection is established and the problem is solved ... but still annoying.

Windows Firewall is running with the default settings.

I'm running Server 2003 with a few applications on it that are accessed from two ethernet wired computers and two connecting with remote desktop (running XP and Vista). I want to change the log on p/w to the user account where these apps are running on Server 2003. I tried it last night and then tried to access from one of the ethernet computers and it said it wasn't accessible. I guess these connections are mapped (I didn't set it up).

Do I need to go and delete the connections off of each computer and remap a network drive? Or is there an easier way for me to do this.

I'm not quite sure what you mean ...

You changed the program log in password? That should be as simple as changing the log in details on both PC's within the program they are running, right?

It doesn't sound like anything else has changed on the physical network (IP address of server/hostname/etc).

I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.

It works by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.

I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.

To simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".

Is there a way I can force the drives to work automatically at startup? Perhaps using a .BAT file or similar to automate the process of opening/closing the folders at startup so the process of using these programs is more user friendly?

Ok, I am having a problem. I have a group policy setting that maps my network drives. I have 3 different NAS boxes; NAS1, NAS2, and NAS3. The mapping works great on all my Win 7 computers and for every user.

I have a Win 8 test machine. When I login with my AD account, only two of my mapped drives get mapped through the GPO. My AD account is in the Administrators group on the Win 8 machine. I try gpupdate but that doesn't work. I try "net use" to manually map them. Doesn't work and get a system error.

Ok, I go to the company that made my NAS thinking they don't support Win 8. They point me a Microsoft KB article with some workarounds. I follow the KB article and add the registry key and then restart.

I login again and check out Explorer to check the Network drives. Two more network drives got mapped correctly from GPO. However, I am still missing all my mapped drives from my NAS3 box.

Ok, this with where it gets weird. While logged in with my AD account I open up cmd and type "net use". I get my 4 successfully mapped drives but I'm still missing the other 6 mapped drives from NAS3. I check the event viewer and it said "Group Policy successfully ran". I right click on cmd and run as administrator. Now I type "net use" and BAM! There are all the network drives I am supposed to have mapped.

Why do I need to be elevated as administrator to see all the mapped drives? Is this a Win 8 thing or is it an issue with my NAS3 box?

I have a network that has one Windows 2000 server and twelve workstations. All work stations are running 2000 Pro except one, it's running XP Pro. The problem I'm having is with the XP workstation. You log onto the server fine and connects all of the networked drives. The problem arises when the work station sits idle for more then a couple of hours and you try to access the networked drives it says the connection has been lost and it will not let you access them. The only way to get access to them is to either log off and then back on or just reboot and log back in. With the 2000 Pro work stations their isn't any problems so I know my settings on the server are fine. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

I do not know if you ever got a resolution on this. Here is what I did on the server I work on.
Users (win XP Pro) were being disconnected from server and were not able to connect to the network drives
Server (Win 2000 Server) also was not able to access the network drives, but it was able to access the shared folders (but not as network drives).

I just restarted the server and that restarted the services and users were able to start working again. Yet this is not the solution.

On the server, a RAS (Remote Access Service) had been configured and the server was creating IP Addresses leases to itself, mutiple ip addresses and all to the single server. The way that RAS service was stopped is to just go to services and disable remote serivice, so as not to start again after rebooting the server. It seemed to have worked just fine.

I have a medium sized network running. We are currently migrating and updating our shared folder systems. The old system is running Win 2k8 R2 and still has the old mapped drives running what we haven't migrated. The new shared folders are on a new server Win 2012 R2 with a different folder structure and everything. Half the computers in the building run Win 7 Pro and the other half Win 10 Pro. Here is my issue. On every single Win 10 computer every drive maps and can be accessed normally, however the new shared drive DOES NOT map to any Win 7 machine. I created a Hyper V win 7 machine and on my Win 10 machine I have all my folders however when I log into that Win 7 machine only the home drives(located on the new share server) and the old shared drives seem to map. I have switched the Drive Maps to Update Create Replace, I have checked all permissions even though it seems not permission related as I can get to it on any win 10 machine. Any advice?

I want to know if there is anyway to find out if a network shared drive (showing within 'My Computer') is manually connected/mapped. (btw we are using a AD - GPO & Desktop Authority)

I don't want to disconnect all the drives and then log the user off as i want to see if there is a simpler way to check this.

I use a current model PC running Windows 7 32 bit.  For the last couple of months one of my network mapped drives (U) to the 2003 Server duplicates itself (V, Z, etc.).  Each day, sometimes several times a day, it replicates itself, I "disconnect"
from the drive(s), but they just reappear the next time I use Windows Explorer, or from any application, choose "open".  I find that no specific event does this, however, I have multiple windows open most of the time, communicate to at least 3 servers many
times throughout the day.   I am also Network Administrator so may have multiple remote desktop sessions with servers and/or users.  Can anyone direct me on how to stop the replication?  Please, and thank you

You may try the Clean Boot to determine if the 3rd party software cause this issue.
Also, check the OU which the policy applied on and the Task Schedule.

Not sure if I'm understanding you correctly, but if you have a set of mapped drives on "old" computer and you want the same mapped drives on "new" computer you can do this by exporting the registry key


Which is where the mapped drive info is stored.

You can copy the exported reg file via USB to the new computer and import it by double clicking the reg file.

However, if you mean that you have a bunch of shares on "old" computer and you want to translate those to the corresponding map drive statements, that's a bit more complex.

Shares are stored in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Controlset001\Services\LanmanServer

But to create such a bat file, you need also to extract the PC name (because it is required as the first part of the NET USE statement.

If this is the scenario you are looking at how many shares are there to be exported? If only a few, it would be far quicker to just map them on the new computer.

We have set the drop down letter to H and verified the path. It is correct, as it works some days.

Any ideas what may cause this?

Why bother mapping a drive via a script??? What was there some special reason you did it that way? Seems waaaay more difficult that it has to be...

I have problems searching users mapped homedirectorys.
Other madded directorys are OK but the homedirectory on a Windows2003 server doesn´t display the files or folders. Only files inside zipped files.

I'm running a Win2K pro client on a NT network. I have 3 drives mapped to various NT servers. Although i have re-connect at log-on selected, whenever i re-start or re-logon the drives show as disconnected. 95% of the time i just have to browse the disconnected drive and it re-connects but it's a hassle to have to browse the drives first in order to use certain network apps. Suggestions?

On serveral machines on our network (Win98 and XP) we just recently began to have problems with mapped network drives disconnecting after a undetermined amount of time. Once these drives are disconnected, the users still have access to the network and needed resources through network neighborhood -but not through the mapped drives. Only when the users reruns the login script or logs off and logs back on does the mapped network drives reconnect. Please, Please help. I need as many suggestions as possible.

I have a laptop running Windows 8.1 with Update 1. I have drives mapped to my Windows Home Server 2011 and to my Windows 7 desktop PC. But each time I reboot the laptop it drops the mapped drives and I have to try and map them all over again. I say "try" because most times I have to go back to my other PCs and unshare and then reshare the drives for them to be seen again in Windows 8. Then I can map them again but only until the next reboot.

Same goes for the Windows Home Server 2011 Connector software. Windows 8.1 drops the connection after a reboot and the Connector software must be reinstalled EACH TIME to connect with my server.

I have the SAME user name and password on ALL machines. I have tried mapping the drives with just the username and password as well as with the remote PC name\username combo but that doesn't work either. Finally I have set my shared drives/folders to have read/write access to ALL users. Again, no luck unless I unshare and reshare.

No one knows why 8.x.x does it. There is nothing out of Redmond what is going on. As to why network mapped drives do not reconnect. Doubtful that MS will ever fix it.

I have a problem with mapped network drives disconnecting.
I run Win7 Pro connecting to Win Server 2003. Reboot and the drives are there. After a while a red cross appears against them in Explorer. I can usually see the contents, but running a program that requires those resources fails.
The only way I can reconnect is to reboot, but then the red cross appears again after a while.
I've updated the LAN driver and even tried setting the registry key MaxNonpagedMemoryUsage to 0xFFFFFFFF as recommended in the only comment on the subject I've been able to find.
I'd really appreciate some help here as I don't want to go back to XP!

I have the same problem although it seems to be limited to one particular server running Windows Server 2003. I have 5 PC's out of 50 that are running Windows 7 professional, all the rest are running XP Pro and all in the same domain. Only the Win 7 pc's have this random problem of the mapped drives and printers (also shared from that server) disconnecting.

I've also tried adding the value to the registery to see if it helps but too soon to tell yet.

I have several network drives. I am on a laptop and whenever I disconnect from my dock (wired connection) it automatically closes any open folders connected to a network drive...

My wireless kicks in a few seconds later, and I have to go through the trouble reopening them all!

Is there a registry setting I can set to prevent this?

One more question:

If I turn the PC on outside of work, it doesn't connect these drives, and thus will prevent them from showing even when I go in and connect to the network. I have to connect them MANUALLY every time.

Is there an easy solution, such as a script I can run from my quick launch that will reconnect all of them?

I recently set up a new Win7 Pro computer for someone at my work, however, an important drive that is normally automatically mapped by our DC (Windows Server 2012 I believe) isn't mapping correctly.
Normally, our DC maps Name$ onto drive G:, however there isn't even a letter G: in explorer or Net Use in cmd and when I tried to map something to G: it says that something is already mapped there. Related but not as pressing, is the fact that F: is also
gone which I had to manually remap that drive to a different letter. However since an individual's personal drive is mapped automatically by our DC to G:, I'm not sure what to do.
I've tried to map something there via Explorer and net use \\Server\Share and I've tried G: /delete with no luck. I've tried killing and restarting explorer as well as rebooting a myriad of times to no avail. I've tried following the fixes in another thread,
but alas, my bane still looms. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?

I have some wireless Netbooks running XP, that are occasionally not picking up all the mapped network drives that the logon script depicts. The most common being the users save drive.

The logon script works fine upon ethernet between all other computers, so the issue maybe related to the WIRELESS network.

oNet.MapNetworkDrive "driveletter:", "\\servername\drivename" is the command from the logon script.

Side notes-
*Sometimes the drive is there, but nothing inside.
*Had some trouble on our new Win7 computers originally, although no longer. I believe it was a different problem.
*All profiles/user folders have been given full access for the purpose of seeing if it a security issue, has not made a difference.

Any common faults that could be causing this issue?

problems began a week ago, i have 4 pc's, xp home on all. mine is the server/w-station. One of the other pc's began having problems connecting to a network drive. It seems the more I tried working, investigating, etc. with re-boots, routers off& on again, its now only allowing the main system to access an network drives. I have 7 mapped drives, only 2 pc's get used majority of time, these 2 are hardwired to a wr54g linksys & a bellsouth dsl router is connected to it too. 2 are wirelss. All will hold the i-net connection, but all 3 are getting the "pc has reached it limit of connections" windows error when I click to check a mapped drive. My tech guy seems to think the xp home limitation to 5 connections is the issue here,,,I understand the reasoning,,but i've been running this way for 3 years now. sure, we've had to re-boot & power on/off at times, but never has it gotten to this point! I am not 100% convinced that is problem. i mean if so, then when only the server/wstation is on & not being used, then why can't just 1 other pc connect to network drive? No way that 5 simultanious connections should be being used in that situation!

Home is limited to five concurrent connections but you only have 4 machines.

if you cut the internet do you still get the connection error? I would be concerned someone external has taken control of your pcs.

How are the drives mapped?
No limits on the shares?
Can you access the share by browsing even if the mapping fails?

Downsteam router is not connected via its wan port and has dhcp disabled?

We have a medium size network with about 60 desktops and 5 servers. Most of the desktops are windows 2000. Any new desktop that we have, we are installing Windows XP Professional.

The main application these desktop are used for is CAD stations. These machines connect to a mapped network drive (the file server) which contains drawing files (sorted by year). When a drawing needs to be updated the draftsman browses the network drive and loads the drawing onto the workstation.

Now to my problem. There is a noticable difference in speed while browsing the network drives between Windows 2000 and windows XP. XP takes longer when searching the network drive than the 2000 machines. And in one rare example when an XP machine access the 1999 folder, half the time it will stop responding and the process will need to be killed. A 2000 machine accessing the same folder is almost instantaneous. Are there some settings in XP that I can change to increase the speed of network browsing?

The XP and 2000 machines are comparable spec's. The file server is Windows 2000 server, and we are on a one domain network. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have a user with several network drives mapped to here system. When is on her wireless, she boots up her machine and logs on. As the wireless network connection is being made, a balloon pops up saying that all network drives were reconnected and to check the status in My Computer. When she double-clicks the network drives they do connect automatically. There is one network drive that is involved in a synchronization that does seem to connect once the internet connection is made.

Is there a way to ensure all mapped network drives automatically connect as soon as a network connection is enabled without having to double-click the drive to open it? This happens whether using our wireless connection at the office or connecting to our network through a VPN at home.

This is an issue about VISTA going into "LIMBO" trying to reconnect to my mapped network drives, which I know I don't have access since I'm connected VPN...

This issue isn`t isolated to VISTA. I`ve had this issue with all Windows OS, I just never found a solution.

The workstation is part of the network, we log into a DOMAIN (pretty standard...)
Often, when using certain VPNs, the "tunneling security" causes you to loose "Network Connections"... which is fine.

If I have a mapped drive to a share on the network
If my default printer is a Network Printer, I cannot access it. You will get the "Could not reconnect to the network share, etc.etc. or printer is unavailable")
Often, same goes for email with Outlook...

Now, when I use various programs such as PL/SQL, MS Word, or Windows Explorer and many more, VISTA,XP, etc,.etc, they all want to be very nice and try to reconnect me automatically to the mapped drive or look for the printer, even If I haven't clicked on the mapped network, or tried to print anything. You get the busy hourglass (or little circle in VISTA), and you have to wait, and wait, and wait until you know you eventually get the "could not reconnect message" and you move on with your life.

All this to ask the following Question: Is there anyway for me to tell VISTA.... "Stop looking, stop trying to reconnect or look for the printer, I know they are not available!"

This is a boot up timing issue, does anyone know the registry fix for network comming up. I am on a wired LAN which works ok. However, recently when booting I am getting the message cannot connect to network drives - these are mapped drives to NAS boxes. However, when I access the drives the 'red X's' change to the network symbol and access is working. Its seems the computer wants to connect before the network is up. It is not a credential issue, but boot order. Is there anyway to make the network come up before the computer wants to map to it. Not a problem but a nag.

Not really it's been a known issue since...windows 95 and MS have never really admitted it's a problem....

you can tell your system to run a simple batch file with a delay of 10 seconds or more (depending on your system boot times) on logon using the scheduler

Logon_Network_Drives.bat (should look something like)
net use Y: \\storage\share /persistent:no
net use Z: \\storage\share /USER:username [password] /persistent:no

Disconnect your network drives before you log off/reboot after setting this batch file up to avoid the error message appearing...

There are more complicated ways to do this using vbscript to avoid the batch file box flashing up as well..

This is copied from windows forums , not sure if it'll work...but says he just put the .vbs script into the startup folder..

I am having trouble with one of my machines authentication to previously mapped drives over VPN. This is detailed in the following link at microsoft's support site.


Their fix is fairly destructive and my user cannot be recreating their mapped drives every time they switch from VPN to LAN working. Anybody know a workaround?

I have the problem of a long list of redundant mapped network drives without drive letters, for example, documents, documents~1, documents~2, etc. all with same location...right clicking on the mapped does not present any "disconnect" option. Oh, they do not appear as mapped network drives under "My Computer," but under "Network" and the name of the computer (which is on a wireless network with another computer)...I can go to advanced sharing and stop sharing, but then all folders are unshared including the original...I guess this may be the only way of getting this corrected, but it seems like a long way to do something that should be very simple...If anyone knows a quick better way, I would appreciate knowing of it.

Unsharing those is going to be the only way to get that to go away, I'm afraid, and that's something you have to do folder-by-folder.

You aren't in a work-environment, are you? If so those folders may have been intentionally shared by your IT department/employer (just food for thought).

Working on a friend's computer...her complaint started with just a sluggish computer. She found and attempted to remove tcp.exe but of course it kept reappearing after restart. By the time I got to check the machine it would no longer restablish it's 2 network mapped drives. Keeps kicking back with "Network path not found" on both.

I've renamed my laptop to her settings and was able to connect easily to her network and see/map her drives to my laptop. But the minute I go back and plug in the network cable and restart her machine, it still kicks back w/ "path not found".

I've run Ad-Aware and cleaned it down from 97 critical to 0. I've run Spybot and found 2 DSO Exploits and 1 "Error During Check: Cabrotor (Datei C:Winnt win.ini kann nicht geoffnet werden" which Spybot 'says' it fixes all 3.

I've run Trojan Hunter and cleaned 1 trojan (though it alerted to 12 possible trojans). Now I'm down to running HJT.

I've attempted to remove/fix the O2 record for 'rvsbil.dat' but it keeps coming back. And the references to 'libsvr' concern me but I can't find any info on it anywhere on the web. I've tried running HJT while in safe-mode to fix libsvr and rvsbil but they come back after restart.

Will someone please take a look at the following log and help me get this machine clean? I'm not sure what files need to be removed to stop the bad stuff from coming back.

Some time ago a friend and I set up my home network. We had trouble with the workstations losing access to mapped drives.
He found a fix, he said we needed to turn off something in XP. It worked perfectly. But last week, one of my hard drives crashed and I had to replace it.
I have one computer with Server 2000 and 4 with XP pro. I can access the mapped drives if I reboot or logoff and on again. They just seem to lose connectivity if I they don't have any contact for a few hours.
I've searched the internet for days looking for the solution. I know it's simple, I just can't remember what it is I need to turn off.

I have got a fair few network drives mapped in my computer, at the min i need to log in manually when i want to view one of them.

is there a way for it to automatically log me in to them when windows starts?

Hi all,
Mapped network drives are being mapped\duplicating by itself .like below : 
Server(2012R2 in domain)
What i did : 
Disconnected but they came back. 
Used Net use commands but it did not work. (Persistent:no)
I also dont have any policy to drives. 
Checked regedit for workstations (MountPoints2, run,Deleted the mapped drives.)
Anyone help how i can solved that ?

In our company, we are using Windows 7 and my goal is to prevent users (also administrators) of specific workstations from running executables which are located on mapped network drives (servers).

I tried different things (e.g. Software Restriction Policies or Applocker => in both cases I tried the UNC address as well as the drive letter to set up the rules) but nothing worked.

I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Rickson1982, welcome to the windows 7 forum.

As mapped drives are just another letter in the drive listing, I don't believe that you can prevent users, especially administrators from running programs that reside on the mapped drive. If you could then all they would have to do would be to copy the executable to their local drive and run it from there.

Removing administrators rights is a tricky wicket because you might not be able to reverse changes.

you could go to the server where the maps are located and change the permissions on each of the executables.

outside of that, I am not sure why you want to do this.. Take them off the share if that's a problem.

We are using Windows 7 Pro as our PC OS and we have four virtual servers (using VMware)- We have Exchange for our email and we are running MS GP Dynamics.  I am finding that on almost a daily basis, I have to restart my PC in order to get the connection
back to our shared (Public) drives that contain our various folders.  MS GP also runs extremely slowly until we restart our PC.  There are times I have to restart all the servers in order for everyone to connect correctly.  I have had our IT
consultants looking at this and they changed some of the mapping policies and created some delayed starts to try and alleviate the connection issue but we are still experiencing the same issues.   I have screen shots of the errors but this will not
let me add images until my account is verified.  It doesn't say how to do that. Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening when it never used to happen in the past?

Long story short, I have shares on three PCs that are not always on. If I make a shortcut to the share and put it on my desktop, sometimes for some reason, the shortcut vanishes. I believe this is because I haven't connected the PC to the network in a while.

So, I went about and mapped those shares to drive letters. All is well, however, it adds another 45 seconds to my boot time.

Pretty sure this is because windows is trying to reconnect to them on boot, but they are disconnected. Is there any way to keep my drive mappings, but not have windows attempt to reconnect on boot?

I know that you will lose your mappings if you do not check "reconnect on login".. so, is there a way to keep the mappings without attempting to reconnect at login?

I’m setting a new laptop for my boss, he will map to several network shares as it boots up. Each share requires a username and password. I mapped these drives, logged in the first time, put in the username and passwords etc with no problems. (we are not on a domain)
We have a DHCP server that gives the IP address to the Laptop.

When I reboot, I get a message from Windows “Could not connect to all Network drives” “Click here to check the status of your network drives”

I see all the mapped drives with little red x’s, clicking on them prompts me to enter a username and password, even though I’ve checked “remember my credentials”

He is going to be pissed if he has to put in his username and password every time he logs on, can you tell me how to fix this?

Is there a “network connection wizard” buried somewhere in Windows 7?

Basically when I map network drives (even just one) the EXPLORER.EXE file browser hangs. Admittedly I usually have at least 4 drives mapped at any given time. And they aren't always connected.

Now that I've removed all network drives and replaced them with "network folders" it opens instantly again.

I see the difference. The network drive link actually shows drive space used/free, not to mention a different context menu. And now it's making sense as to why it's slower.

I'm just wondering if anyone has found a way to get explorer.exe to load instantly with network drives mapped, and have explorer simply update the GUI and list the drives as they are pinged/detected, instead of the entire file explorer hanging?

I frequently access my local drives, and waiting for the network drives to be seen by windows is a pain.

Has anyone found a work-around for this? ... I might have to go back to Explorer++

The mapped drives can still cause problems if there is some heavy network traffic going on. It doesn't have to be coming from/going to the mapped drives either. It can be as simple as an internet download going at about 2-4 MBps. At that point (at least for me) the entire computer is lagging (downloading to the local drive). A:EXPLORER.EXE hangs when opening & network drives mapped

Seems to me in Vista and later there are always hassles sharing entire drives. I used USB 3.0 docking stations with WD Black internal drives. Sharing the files over the Lan what I ended up doing was making a new folder in the root and dragging all the other folders into it. Then share the folder. It's not always a viable option. But it seems quicker and more reliable when possible to use that technique.

A better answer may be to use a third party file manager that doesn't bog.

I am currently trying to find a way to map network drives with a log on script. I have searched the net a bit and haven't had too much luck in finding specifically what i need.

Here is the scenario:

I have remote clients that connect through a VPN to our corporate office for AD authentication and other AD services. I have setup home directories for each user, but i need a public share that all the users of the remote office can see. (my main problem is that they all dont know how to use computers so i need to make it as painfully obvious as i can *mapped drives).

I am looking for a way to create two mapped network drives, one for their individual home folder, and one community folder. I haven't had a problem creating the home folder (that is easy with 2k3), but i can't get my log on script to work properly.

Here are my questions:

1. Can i run a log on script and a home folder assignment at the same time? Or do i need to setup the script to create the mapped drive for both folders?

2. I have found a few places to link a user to a log on script (either by browsing the user in Users and Computers, under the Profile tab by the Home Folder) or with a GPO. Which is the preferred/best/efficient way to do it?

3. I can't even get my log on script to map a drive on a test account... what am i doing wrong? I have included my script code on the bottom of this post.

We have Windows Vista Ultimate on brand new computers.They connect to the network just fine.  We can browse to our servers and map network drives.If
you add a secondary ip address, if that ip address is lower in number
than the static ip address set on the network card, and reboot ever,
the mapped network drive no longer works.  I'll try to explain it in
more detail:Lets say my static ip address is map my M: drive to a network server.  It works fine and I can access it like any other drive.-I need to add a secondary ip to my pc to work on something else.  I add to my network card.--My drive mapping is still there, it still works just fine.--I am able to access the other devices on the 10. network.-The following day I have to reboot for whatever reason.-After rebooting the
M: drive is no longer available and I can no longer see the server when
I browse the network to look for it to remap the drive letter.-Both ip's are still listed in my network cards tcpip settings.-I remove the from my NIC.-I browse the network again and now I can see the server and remap the network drive.-I can re-add the ip and everything stays working as before.  Unless I reboot, and then the mapped drives are no longer available.-Testing
this same thing but using a higher numerical ip addres (not using the, something like, does not affect anything.

I have a couple of users that when they logon, the logon scrip runs, but the shared drives are not displaying.  If they open a program and browse for files, they will see all the mapped drives.  When I try to remap the drives, I get a message that
the drive is already used and ask to remap.  This also make it display when you remap.  There are no error messages in the event log.
Also, if you restart the computer 2 or 3 times, it will display the drives.  IF I logon with the users account on a different Windows 7 Computer, it will display the drives the first time logon.
Computers are windows 7 Pro with all the updates.  Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controllers (2).
Please let me know if you have any questions.  Your help is greatly appreciated.
