Active window repositions when I press the 1 key (???)

Q: Active window repositions when I press the 1 key (???)

Hi All

I wonder if anyone else has had this issue and knows how to fix...

I'm typing normally in a window. It could be in any application (any MS Office app, Skype, etc; but curiously NOT internet explorer). I press the 1 key (this only happens with the 1 key - alone or SHIFT+1, CTRL+1, ALT+1) and the whole window instantly shifts position on the desktop down and to the right. This typically moves the active window partially off screen (and of course mostly such that the text I'm typing also goes off screen).
Interestingly it also moves the mouse position too - say I have the mouse cursor arrow somewhere inside the active window, the cursor also shifts position to be in the same position relative to the active window.

The move only happens once (i.e. if I press 1 for a second time or more, the active window doesn't move again).

It happens both when the active window is maximised and when it is not (when it's maximised the active window changes to 'restore down' status and I think the new position of the active window is always the same and the active window also changes to the same new size too.

Anyone have the slightest clue what might be going on here?

[This is happening on my Surface Pro 3 i7 with windows 8.1, not any of my other PCs]

Thanks a lot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all

have a HP Pavilion DV9500 which i have just run Active Kill disk on, know when i re-install the drive to laptop i get the message below:

Active Partition Not found - press any key

i have tried running Windows 7 from restart to no avail. When i plug the laptop drive in to my desk top to try and format it, it is not recognized under computers

I set the correct boot patterns with CD to boot first etc,.

plz help

Regards Simon

A:Active Partition Not found - press any key

Seems that you erased your OEM Recovery Partition that is used to reinstall Windows back to the OEM factory Defaults when you ran Active Kill Disk which erases your whole hard drive sector by sector.

You will have to contact HP and see if you can get a OEM HP recovery disk to reinstall Windows. Or go here Looking for Recovery Discs? | HP? Support

I have already tried the EASE ACCESS option but could'nt find to stop this Short Cuts as these keys are well working in My virtual machine , Can any one suggest the answer of it.

A:Keyboard shorcuts opens, when i press R it opens the RUN Command window & when i press E it opens the My computer , How should i remove these shorcuts. When i use these keys in my Virtual machine it works fine, Kindly guide me in this issue

Thanks for the post!
It seems the shortcut keys are messed up. Did you get this issue before?
By default, Win+R is used to open Run command, and Win+E for opening Computer. It seems these shortcut keys are changed. Now, if you press Win+R or Win+E, which windows will show?
If you figure out which application used this two shortcuts keys. Right-click the application, choose Properties - Shortcut Tab, what's behind the Shortcut key box? Change it with another shortcuts key.
Also fully scan your computer, and if you have a backup, a system restore could help you come back to a nearlier time.

I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 and Office 2010 and though I'm starting to get used to all the changes there is one thing which is really bugging me.

When I have two separate Excel windows open and open an Excel file from Windows Explorer the file will open in the first window not in the active Excel window. If I want to open a file in the second window I need to do it via Open.

Is there anyway of fixing this?

A:Open Excel workbook in active window rather than first window

When you open a xls-file in explorer both excel windows are inactive, so what do you mean?

Have an unusual wish maybe... used alot of linux before and edit a lot of textfiles in separate windows and miss a very handy setting.
I want to just point on the active window an be able to write in it, if just a bit of it is visable. I don't want it to popup in front of other windows which are covering parts of the active window.
I found the "make window active by just pointing on it" but that popups the window... Minor problem but...is it possible?

Well, no, you cannot have an active window without it popping up to the front of the screen. The only time that this is possible is if there is another application window that has been specifically created by the developer with the "Keep on Top" flag. An example is the Task Manager that can be opened using <CTRL>+<SHIFT>+<ESC>. Task Manager is always at the top of the stack, whether it is the active window or not.

Sorry I couldn't give any other help on this...

I use two monitors when I browse, and for some reason recently something seems to have changed. Now it seems that when a browser finds the website to which it was directed that browser becomes active, so whatever I happen to be typing on the other monitor suddenly is being typed on the newly active window. I know this sounds trivial, but it is very annoying, and has been the cause of some serious disruptions. As I said, this is a recent occurance, but I have not made any changes to IE, no one else uses this system and I update and run a full system scan with Norton's Anti-Virus every Friday.
It seems to me to have a simple solution, but I have been unable to locate it myself.

I've been having a problem ever since downloading and installing GorMedia Webcam Software Suite. It came with a bunch of malware including moviedea.exe and msnetcore.exe, which I've deleted along with the original Webcam Software.  I've removed all malware from the computer.
Ever since then, I've been having the following problems:
1) Open applications windows will randomly switch. For example, I may have two Firefox windows open. I will be typing something in Firefox and it will switch to the other Firefox window automatically. The window will also sometimes flash but remain in the same application rather than switching.
2) The applications list on my taskbar will randomly close and open. If I have a Firefox window up, the indicator on the taskbar will randomly close and then open back up by shrinking and then expanding back.
I am on Windows 7 64 bit desktop computer.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I've started to experience a problem with my 9 month old laptop. It happened once a few months ago, then a couple weeks ago, now twice in one week so am under the impression it is only going to get worse.

I have searched a number of forums/threads and some people have similar issues, but not exactly the same. Doesn't seem there were any real resolutions, only people suggesting generic fixes like, 'Did you reboot?'

The problem pops up sporatically. It can happen 20 times in one minute, then disappear for 10 minutes. When I am in an active window, and this can be anything from Word, Outlook, Firefox, Skype, MSN Messenger, or Google Talk, I can be typing away or scrolling down the page in Firefox when all of a sudden the active window becomes inactive. That means that I can no longer type or scroll. Each time this happens I have to re-click on the window. Sometimes it reverts back the next second, sometimes 20 seconds...sometimes minutes. It is very annoying and inconvenient.

I have: rebooted several times, tried changing the background profiles, and created another user account. In that other use account, the issue doesn't occur (yet anyway). That would leave me to believe I may have something wrong with my profile based on other forum topics. If the resolution is to create a new profile, that is a large pain because it takes a long time to get everything the way you want it, all the software you need, and tweaked to your liking. If I have to do this ever... Read more

PD: i have already scanned the computer several times for illegal programs adware malware viruses etc apparently this doesn't seem to be the problem

A:active window problem

When a window loses focus for no apparent reason, it's often caused by some persistent or repetitive background process, so you need to take a look at those.

Hello there :3 I recently upgraded my OS to 64bit and noticed a very, very annoying issue. Active window randomly blinks (not only blints, but "refreshes" itself, that can be noticed in a task bar as window disappears in it for a quarter of second and then appears back and the responding of it stops for a moment). And it greatly affects my gaming experience as well as when I'm holding any button, after window refreshes I need to press it again and in certain games it's frustrating, annoying and distracting. Please help me to solve this very weird problem :3 Drivers are up to date (yes, all of them!). Thank you in advance :3

How do I change the settings for my windows? When I click on a hyperlink, it opens the window but not in the normal size.... it is very small, about 2" by 2" and I have to click on the middle square to maximize it.......... why did this happen suddenly? and how do I fix it?

A:active window........ too small

Start IE, right click any link on a web page, and select Open in a New Window.

Go back to the first IE window you opened and close it.

Return to the second window and manually drag it to fill the screen.

Don't use the maximise button, as that's a temporary setting that will not be retained.

Now press the Ctrl button, and close this second window, holding the Ctrl button down, using 'close' in the File menu (This is important!).

This should force Windows to remember the settings, and windows will now open maximised.

Hi All. Newbie here.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional/64 bit on a Dell Latitude E series. I'm also using a Windows Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500.

Everyday, several times during the day, when I release my mouse to use the keyboard, the active window just disappears leaving only my desktop visible. It will reappear as soon as I move the mouse again. Most times, the active window will then remain on the screen but sometimes, when I let go of the mouse to begin typing again, it will disappear again.

Now this is nothing serious and I don't lose any data. Nor is it a case of not being able to bring the active window back up. However, it is very annoying and if there is a way to correct it, I'd love to do so.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I am currently running a Dell XPS 13 with Windows 8.1.

What happens is that I might be writing up an email in firefox and every 10-20 seconds the window deactivates and I have to click on it again - mightily frustrating. It occurs with other programs as well.

My first reaction to this problem was that it must be malware but my thorough scans have come up with zilch problems. Then I updated all my touchpad, graphics etc. drivers and that did not help also. I uninstalled applications like Bing Bar thinking that it kept deactivating my window but to no avail!

Any suggestions or ideas would be mightily helpful. I have run out of ideas. Now when I want to do proper typing I will do it in a full screen 'metro' app since they do not deactivate.....

A:Active window keeps deactivating.

By deactivating do you mean closing or minimizing? Could you be that you are resting your palms on the touchpad when typing? That can close or minimize some windows depending on which touchpad settings and software is being used for the touch pad also sensitivity settings.

My touchpad can be used as a big button to close, minimize things. Also using certain finger gesters I can zoom and maximize windows. Check your touchpad settings.

I have looked everywhere for a fix to this problem and can't seem to find it anywhere...

When I have multiple applications/programs running and my mouse leaves one window, that window self minimizes. In XP I actually got to decide when I wanted to minimize or change windows. Windows 8 apparently does it for me...AND IT JUST DRIVES ME ABSOLUTELY INSANE!

Example: I have two Windows Explorer windows open so I can manually move files. When a dialog box pops up to give me the status of the files being moved, if my mouse does not remain on this box it just disappears into the background.

Example 2: When I run my password manager program. When it pops up for me to enter my password, if my mouse is not on it, it just disappears into the background. Also when it prompts me for which password/account/user name to use on a site, I have to click on an option in basically less than a second or the entire window disappears into the background. Absolutely maddening!

Not sure I have explained this very well, but hopefully someone understands and has a solution to this one. I really like Windows 8, but would love it if this mother of all Windows 8 annoyances for me) was no more.

Thanks for your time and knowledge in advance,

David Lueck

A:Active Window Switching

You may be getting mouse gesture swipe behavior. Press Winkey-q then arrow down to setting and type "edge" (without the quote) in the search box. One of those two may be the culprit.

To help finding the mouse pointer. press Winkey-x then pree 'p' for control Panel. Click Mouse settings. In the mouse pointer Tab check to show mouse cursor when pressing Control key. It actually circles the position when you release the Control key. I like to use it as my Laptop looks a bit dim outdoors.

It doesn't matter what program I am using. I will hear a ding and shortly after, my active window will go inactive. I tried checking the Task Manager, but I couldn't see anything wrong. Can you help?

I have Windows XP. IE put some kind of search program on my computer without asking. (ETA: IE just tried to have me dl it again. It is called coollist.searchmiracle. For some reason DAP automatically pops up with the program asking if I want to dl it.) When I checked on it, it said that I had ot dl the Uninstall program. I wasn't thinking properly (I just wanted it gone), so I downloaded it, and uninstalled it. Then I started having this problem.

I have Norton, so I immediately made sure it was completely updated and ran a virus scan. Nothing was found.

I downloaded Spybot - SD and tried to use that, but I had so many problems running it that I uninstalled it. While trying to run SB, I had several windows pop up stating that something had changed in my registry. I accepted this because I didn't know what else to do.

I checked the archives here and found someone who was having a similar problem. You recommended downloading HijackThis and posting the log here, so that is what I am doing.

First off, I apologize if this thread is in the incorrect forum.

Anyways, when I take a screenshot of an active window on Windows 7, it cuts off the shadow on the edges. Is it supposed to do this? (see attachment)

If not, how can I fix this?

A:Active Window Screenshot

If you're using the built in Snipping Tool this is how it is supposed to work.

You could try and cut round the window manually but that's just annoying.

Don't worry about it.

I have a new computer with XP Pro SP2 on it, where my previous computer had SP1. Now, unlike before, after a few seconds, the active window goes inactive. This forces a mouse click to continue using the scroll wheel, a real nuisance when web surfing. I run Norton 2006 with SystemWorks, have scanned my computer with it and found nothing. Also used AdAware and removed suspected spyware. I see no suspicious processes or services running. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Do you have any messenger programs that may be getting messages and stealing focus from the active window?

Basic info:
Using Windows 7
Dell Laptop Inspirion N7010
6gb ram
64 bit operating system

My current active window becomes inactive quite frequently. I have to constantly click on the window to type this out.

Attempted fixes:
I may have gotten a virus prior to this happening but I ran combo fix but this issue still persisted. I was under much stress and unfortunately forgot to save the log. I could run it again if need be.

I also read that my user account could be corrupted and that I could make a new one. So I did and it has adminstator rights but for some reason I couldn't download anything.

Any help would be much, much appreciated. I just got over a virus to only learn that it was now my computer's turn.

I am running XP on a Dell Dimension and every 30 seconds the window you're viewing goes inactive. I hope that makes sense but to be sure I'll describe it another way.
You can be typing an email in Outlook and all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, the window stops being the active window and you are no longer typing. Now you can wait about 10 secs. and the window will reactivate by itself or grab the mouse and do it manually.
It's driving us batty and so far we cannot find a solution. I have even gone so far as to reinstall Windows but no luck.

I hope someone can help,

A:Active Window "inactivates"

If you have tried reinstalling and are having the same issue, then that leads me to believe it might be hardware related. The simpliest and first thing that comes to mind is your mouse. It sounds like it is almost like your mouse is sending signals that move the curser, or tell your computer to activate a different window, or a different part of a window. Replace the mouse and see if the issue dissapears. At least that is what I would try first - mostly because it is a simple test.

While typing along in word or an email, the window I'm using becomes inactive. To get it back I have to click it. This happens every couple of minutes. At this rate I'm getting nothing done. It has happened twice since I began typing this message. What's happening and how do I fix it?

I suspect some scumware is lurking taking focus

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their definition updates and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing

anything they say.

Do these before the next step.

Then get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, put it in a permanent folder, run it , DO NOT fix
anything, post the log here.

Hi all after doing a few changes to my win7 os Ive managed to nail this problem down to the core problem.

My wireless adapter sotware is the culprit it steals your focus and goes nowhere because it doesnt run an active window just runs silent in background (nothing to display)
So after each start up I close its window completely (no background taskbar icon)

I have not yet checked with manufacturer web site for similar issue I use TP-LINK.

A:Active Window Problem In Xp

You would need to get some sort of theming application that would
decorate, if you will, the Window in question. Window Blinds is the only
one I''ve seen doing this in XP, but I'm sure there are some free options as

Please search for wincustomize on the Wikipedia.org website. The first option
typically directs you to all of the relevant information. Keep in mind that
wikipedia may or may not be accurate.

Running Windows XP with SP2 installed. Click on Start/Run/MSCONFIG and the dialog box pops up for a second and then disappears. Same thing happens when I Ctrl-ALt-Del, and then click Task List, it pops up for a second and then disappears.

I am logged on as the administrator. Other than that the computer seems to run OK. I have checked for Virus and Spyware (NAV, Ad-Aware, Spy-Bot). Have also reloaded my video card drivers.

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Good day All
At our office we have a setup with the Sage Pastel Accounting software running on a Windows 7 machine as the Accounting Server. The problem that we are experiencing seems to be an
intermittent one although recently it seems to be happening more often than usual. When the user clicks on the statement button to generate a statement for customers, a window opens up allowing them to select a range of customers for whom to generate statements.
Normally this would become the active window within the Pastel application. But for some unknown reason this window appears for a split second and then becomes hidden behind the main Pastel application window waiting for the user to select 'OK' or 'cancel'.
I have tried using the alt+tab method but this just cycles through the different applications and windows that are open. Using the Ctrl+tab option works within the Pastel software to cycle through different windows open within Pastel but not when there
is an active window that requires input from the user. I am unable to move the main Pastel window to access the active window behind it at all. When I click on the main Pastel window the PC reports the default error beep to tell me I am not clicking on the
active window within Pastel?.but I cannot get to that window because its behind the main Pastel window. The main window just sits on top of every other application and window that is open. Using the cascade option and also the vertical and horizontal alig... Read more

hi guys im looking for some help with this rather annoying problem...

the active window that i am using either on msn messenger, a forum or in IE keeps deactivating itself and stops me from typing...

i will be typing a message and then hit enter to send it and then i look up to find only half of my message is actually in the window because it is no longer active... (it's happened about 3 times whilst typing this message) i type and then look up to see that the active window is no longer active... in IE and msn messenger the top toolbar has changed to a lighter grey colour than normal and i have to click in the window i was using to make it active again and continue typing...

does anybody know what may be causing this and how to fix the problem as it is now getting very annoying...

appologies if anything i said didn't make much sense.. i am not very technical when it comes to problems like this but i would like some help from those who know a little more than me to try and fix this problem...

thanks in advance to anybody who has any suggestions to try and help me sort this out.
