Customizing Details Pane for folders.

Q: Customizing Details Pane for folders.

In order to customize which fields are displayed in the details pane for a given file type you can:

1. Run Regedit.
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAsso ciations\.mp3 (Or whatever file type you want to edit.)
3. Edit the PreviewDetails string.

My question is:
Is there a way to do something similar for folders? Currently, the only info displayed in the details pane when a folder is selected is Date modified, and Availability. I would like to add other details to this pane (Size, Date created etc...). Is this possible?

Preferred Solution: Customizing Details Pane for folders.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How can I re-associate .mp4 files with video details displaying in the Details Pane? After installing the K-lite codecs pack, my mp4's all began displaying in the details pane as audio files (Album, Artist etc) and no longer displays the important video default details (size, frame height, bitrate etc). I assume it was because of incorrectly associating file types when installing the codecs (even though wmv's, avi's are still correct), so I uninstalled the codecs but the Details categories remain for typical audio files. I've exhausted The Google and I'm stumped... any help? (Win7, 32-bit with VLC as my default player) Thanks!

I'm looking to put shortcuts to each of my primary hard drives in the circled pane.
I'm pretty sure it's possible and all I have to do is modify a system file or some ****, but where would I go about doing such a thing?

Hi everyone,
I've got two small issues that are that get me really nitpicky when I'm reminded of them. I was hoping you could help me with those.

So the first one is I'd like to customize system icons. Before the upgrade from Windows 7 I had IconPackger which was fantastic, but unfortunately does not change the icons on Windows 10.

Next small issue I'd like to change the sorting order in the navigation pane. After playing with all sort of registry files, it's got a little messy.

What I'd really like to do is bring the Libraries icon down below OneDrive. Also, ever since the upgrade the Homegroup icon isn't there anymore even though the service is active.

Have a great day everyone

right now, if i click the customize button and choose "music" for my music folders, it shows 'name', '#', 'title', 'contributing artists', and 'album' as sortable columns.

i was hoping there was a way to customize which columns would appear by default in music folders, rather than having to right click the top bar and add different elements like 'comments' or 'genre' to each individual folder. (i'm a ocd music sorter, so each artist has it's own folder. it would be beyond tedious to add genre and comments to each folder, only to have those elements disappear when the folder is returned to default status)

any ideas?

A:Customizing Music Folder Details

First set the current folder to optimize for Music (Use the Music Template):
Right Click Folder > Properties > Customize > Choose "Music" from dropdown list

Now set the settings in the folder (view options, etc)

Now we'll apply those settings to all folder that use the Music Template:
Organize > Folder & Search Options > View > Apply to All Folders

Now if you have a music folder you just need to go to Properties > Customize > Music in order to it to display the way you like.

I'm using Windows 7 Professional x64. When I use Windows Explorer to view image files (jpg, png, etc.), I would like to see each image's dimensions listed in the Details Pane (when it's set to view the images as Icons/Thumbnails, rather than Details). However, the only details that show up in the Details Pane are Name, Type, Date Created, Date Modified, and Size. This is the case even though:

* I've checked 'Dimensions' in the 'Choose Details' options
* The folder is already categorized/optimized for 'Pictures'
* Other folders show the other details I want -- i.e., the Details Pane for my 'Videos' folder shows Length, Frame Width, Frame Height, and other details that I've chosen

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

I've been trying to re-organize my photo collection. Previously, I had been using Windows Live Photo Gallery to tag my photos, and admittedly it was convenient. Recently, though, the program has gone on the fritz to where thumbnails aren't loading so it's harder to differentiate photos simply by the file name in cases where I have a lot of photos of the same group or folder. While I've tried a lot of troubleshooting to get the thumbnails to load, and would gladly take advice on that issue, in the meantime I'm trying to accomplish the same thing using the details pane in explorer.

When I highlight a photo right now, most file types load the date stamp, tags, rating, author(s) and comments properties in the details pane. However, I'd like to edit the people properties so I can tag individuals in the photos. I have not seen a way to easily do that short of using other software (such as Photo Gallery).

Does anyone know if there's a way to do this through explorer or will it require a separate application?

I have this problem with the vista details pane and I have not been able to find any solution. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium version. The problem is that:
1. My details pane is missing a lot of properties/tags . Only ones that are appearing are file date, file name, dated created.
2. When I go into a MP3 folder, same thing happens as I described in 1. Just the 4 tags appear and I don?t get any other tags that used to be there like artist name, rating, title, etc.
3. I cannot edit any Tag in the details pane. When everthing was working fine, I could go in the MP3 folder , I could edit the title, ratings etc. and Save it. But now I can?t do anything, the save button does not appear and the tags don?t go in edit mode.
Up till now I have tried the following solutions:
1. I have reset all the folder options in Vista by going to Folders/tools/reset defaults. (did not work)
2. After resetting the folders, I have also turned on the details pane option under Organize/Layout and the details under the Views. (did not work)
3. Under View, in the tool bar, I went to Customize This Folder and chose the Music Folder Option, All Items etc. (did not work)
4. Then on the Microsoft site, I found this solution ? Open Documents by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Documents., and click a file to apply properties. Then In the Details pane at the bottom of the folder window, click the property that you want to change, type the new property in the Tags.? But it did not work ei... Read more

Hai Im new here..

Recently I was trying to add comments to movie folders so that i can keep a brief description about it when i click on it. It was easy to add comment then i had a bit trouble to get the comment getting displayed in the details pane...after playing with the registry for a while i got that solved as well.
Now I ended up with a problem where the comment being displayed eds with just some 3 or 4 words with the remaining given in dots (...) and I get a full display of it when i hover the mouse over it, which obviously goes way in 5 seconds or so.

So what i need is to find a way to expand what ever that is shown in the details pane so that it shows the entire content in consecutive lines without being restricted to one line (without having to hover a mouse)

You might get a picture of it if you have a small details pane on the right and make it show your processor details when you open thisPC.

Is there any way to permanently remove or disable all of the various "views" in the Windows 7 Navigation Pane *except* for Details? If a subdirectory contains audio files I *never* want to see "Album" or "Artist" or any of the rest of that garbage. In short, when I click anywhere in the left or right panel in the Navigation Pane I never want to see *ANYTHING* except the file name, type, size, and date modified. Hi, I just re-installed windows 7 on my desktop pc and have a question about the settings of the details pane in windows explorer (the one that appears and the bottom when you select a file). Previously when I selected video files (.mp4, .avi and .mkv) I would get the details at the bottom, the video frame width and height, size of file etc.. but since I reinstalled I don't get these details when I select video files. I know its only a small problem but I work with video files a lot and have gotten used to seeing the resolution of files without having to open them. Does anyone know how I can get the details pane to show these details again? At the moment it only displays the video size, name and state.

I'm a novice to customizing Windows 7, and have tweaked it rather successfully so far, but I've run into a roadblock. The next tweak I'm trying to do is to replace the loud Favorites star to something a bit more low-key.

In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E}\DefaultIcon the registry key points to resimages.dll in System32: %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-1024

This should point that yellow star, which I would like to retrieve and edit to replace if at all possible (I'm unsure if I can simple point the DefaultIcon key to any old .ico file or if it needs to be a .dll, but at this point that's not a huge issue). However, it doesn't seem to be there, but I'm able to change an icon of a file to the yellow star.

I've tried looking through imageres.dll in Resource Hacker but I can't seem to find it there either.

On another note, does anyone have experience changing the "Favorites" label to something else?

First of all, I'm not sure I'm in the right section of the forum. (I guess someone will move it if it's in the wrong place).

My problem is this ... I have a number of reference books on my computer in .pdf format.

When I had the same books on my XP system and I would go to the folder and set the 'view' to Medium Icons or Large Icons and be able to view the cover of each book or magazine (making it easy to see if it's the book I want or not without having to open it).

Now I am using Win7 and don't get me wrong, I love it ... it works well, but ... when I go to the folder, no matter what 'view' I set it on, I am unable to see the book covers etc...

does anyone know if this is fixable or have any idea on how I can make this happen?

A:Customizing Folders

First Off, Welcome.

If you are running 64 bit (and I suspect you are) there's no "official support" from Adobe.

A third party option which will display .pdf as well as many other non native images as thumbnails is Mystic Thumbs which (sadly) costs $15 but is worth every cent.
I did have another work-around to show just pdf files as thumbnails. I'll see if I can find it for you.

It seems when I have a problem it is a problem no one else has as when I google I can't seem to find anyone asking a similar question.

First, the hard drive in question...

80GB FAT32; 167,398 files; 12,944 folders
this is not my boot drive - it is my 2nd physical drive which I use for storing data
I have Windows XP Pro installed on 1st physical drive

Second, the problem...

On maybe two dozen of the folders I have used the Customize tab to choose a picture to display to make the contents of the folder easier to discern at a glance. This worked out quite well except when I customize one of the folders it displays that thumbnail on the folder I customized and another folder which I did not customize.

I searched the registry for the name of the JPG that I used to customize the folder and found the following registry key:

in this key the following entry exists:

Logo REG_SZ E:\Docs\Track001\SRV\M\05_S_12.jpg

this is obviously the registry entry that controls the customized view for this folder.
BTW, the folder I customized is E:\Docs\Track001\SRV\M.

The strange thing is that another folder (E:\Docs\Track004\SRX\V\V3x) gets customized with this same picture.

If I reset EITHER folder to default or change the custom picture on EITHER folder then the ...\Bags\1533\Shell\Logo key gets changed.

I apologize if this is a duplicate question- I have searched this forum and not found this topic.

In WinXP, when selecting View Folders, I would see a closed folder, with 4 small images of the folder contents. I liked this as I instantly knew what images were in my folder. I am drilling down as follows: Documents, then the folders come into view. These are the folders I am discussing here. Windows Explorer gives the same results.

In Vista, I get a partially open folder, with the contents partially visible, but cascaded so as to obscure the contents under the first view. I've tried all the possible options I can find withing Vista, including Large Icons, etc. I have searched online for how to make the folders give me the preview pane as in XP, to no avail. I have tried numerous fixes found online, but they do not work. I may be using the wrong terminology, but I have spent two months trying to get the folders to display as in XP. Would someone here know a fix for this?

Thank you in advance! Great forum here, BTW!

Hi, Usually repairing Internet Explorer fixes this issue.

Read the following, all the way down to the bottom!

If you have XP, there is another method: Since XP comes with IE 6, the entry for IE does not show in Add/Remove Programs, and you cannot run the repair utility from there...so> try this:

Read about it first!http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm

Start button>Run

Type in the run line this:[cmd] and hit Enter key once.

Type this next to the cursor in the black box:

sfc /scannow (one space after the c) and hit Enter key once again.

Let the System File Checker run, it will take awhile, then it will NOT give any messages...either it works, or it doesnt.

For other than XP, win2000, etc:

The IE Repair utility is available if you have upgraded Internet Explorer from the original installed version> take a look in Add/Remove Programs, and if you see this:

Microsoft Internet Explorer (someversion) and Internet Tools, just hit Add/Remove> we arent uninstalling anything, you will see 3 options then> hit "Repair this version of IE" and let the utility run to completion. You will see a message that tells you either it fixed something, or that you need to reinstall IE.

There are certain steps to reinstalling depending on what your version of Windows is> and if you have XP with SP2 or not.

In the Windows Explorer Window the left pane is blank (gray, only the little cross to close the pane) when the folder view is selected. The search and history folder do work though.

Is there someone who can help me please?

The pic is fairly self-explanatory, but as you can see on the left hand side in the folders pane, there is 2 of nearly every folder. Any idea what I have done and how to rectify this?

Oops sorry it doesn't show up too well on here. It can be viewed at http://i38.tinypic.com/xp1mjq.jpg

A:Vista folders pane showing 2 of every folder

Hello Howie, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I believe it would be easier to create a new administrator account, then copy the contents of your old user account's C:\Users\(user-name) folders into the corresponding new accoun'ts C:\Users\(user-name) folders. If everything checks out ok, then you can delete the old user account while logged on to the new one.

Hope this helps,

How to change names of the folders in navigation pane in Windows 8.1 x64 under This PC category? I want to change the names which are shown in File Explorer, not actually change locations.

A:change names of the folders in navigation pane

Just go to: C:\Users\Username
On the RHS, right click on the folder->RenameSign out and sign back in to take effect.
