I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello; I am looking for a replacement CPU Mounting bracket, not to be confused with the CPU plug in socket. One of the four securing tabs which attach the entire CPU module [CPU Fan, Heat Sink, and the CPU]  to the MB which is an  ASUS P4SD-LA Stingray. I think it's very possible that this bracket tab gave up due to excessive heat, Is there any way to monitor overheating of the CPU on these older PC's? That is, except for a $150.00 water cooler coils. FYI, I am running Ubuntu 15.04 on all of these older machines. Thanks, TennrsseeJoe

TennrsseeJoe Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Monitoring CPU temps in the Linux world is harder to do due to the lack of drivers and software apps to do that. I have successfully used the app Gkrellm on several Linux distros, but you have to install an app called LM-Sensors to see if the CPU temps can be read at all. This is a complicated process, and you really need to post this issue on the Ubuntu Forums -- where folks can walk you through the details:  http://ubuntuforums.org/Good Luck

My mounting bracket is here:

The center of it seems to be glued to the Mobo as it is almost impossible to remove. My question is, is there any way to get it off without damaging the motherboard, or do I need to buy a new one?

A:Mounting Bracket is stuck

Try to get a screwdriver (non magnetic) with a straight bit to pry it off. Or try a floor tack remover if you have one. Just use something thin to put under it and pry it up. I don't know if that would damage your motherboard but I highly doubt it.

I am replacing an old mobo due to constant running and bulging capacitors. But its my first time dinking with anything mobo related. Or really anything that isn't replacing a bad PSU.
The old one is an MSI P965 Neo-7.
The new one is a Biostar G41 DVI.
I have the CPU installed fine and went to put the heatsink on top (Ultra brand). The screw holes are too small. Of course, that's when I noticed that I didn't remove the mounting bracket for the heatsink from the back of the old mobo. But I can't get it off. It seems to be glued in using some kind of foam tape pad. The new mobo didn't come with a mounting bracket.
Is there some kind of way to remove the old mounting bracket and install it on the new mobo OR do I have to find myself a new mounting bracket (or heatsink) somewhere?

A:Heatsink mounting bracket - removal or replacement?

Usually some foam is placed between the mounting bracket and the back of the motherboard to prevent the board from getting short circuited. The foam has probably stuck to the two surfaces and hardened over time, which is why they seem glued together. If you aren't worried about damaging the old board (since you are replacing it), just pry off the old backplate with a screw driver.

I'm using an IBM Netvista 6578 LBG desktop PC and wish to install a second hard drive (HD). I do not have a problem with the cabling, jumpers, etc. but I've been trying to locate a supplier for the fitting bracket.

I want to fit the HD in the bay immediately underneath the CD drive and require a slide in sleeve that has the mounting points for the HD screws.

I can't be the first person who wants to do this, but I can't find anyone who supplies the part (it's always possible that I'm not using the correct keywords in my searches).

Can anyone recomend a supplier of the part please?

I was nosing around in one of our Dell Optiplex 780m "tower" machines and I noticed that the hard-drive was encapsulated within a baby-blue plastic sleeve of a deal that guides the drive into position and retains it in place.

There is provision for a second drive, but no blue plastic thingie; it is pretty obvious that one needs that blue gizmo if installing a second drive.

I found some examples on EBay, but the descriptions were very vague as to what they fit.

Are these pretty much standardized so far as Dell are concerned; or, are they different from model to model ?

Anybody have a correct part number ?

I am trying to install an additional hard drive in my Compaq Presario 5000 and can figure out no way to attach it with the brackets that were included in the maxtor kit. The original hard drive (which I want to keep) is enclosed in a cage type metal bracket and there is not a second one for the new drive. Have contacted Compaq with no result. They keep giving me directions on how to configure which I'm sure will be helpful if I ever get it attached. They studiously ignore me when I say I think a part is missing, i.e. the bracket. Does anyone out there know the type of bracket or part # so I could find another one. I can see that it would be simple to put in if I had that particular bracket. Written on it is Mace Tech REV: 5 and p/n 66300006 but I can't find that anywhere and am thinking that Compaq must use another number. Is there some other way to attach using the brackets that came in the Maxtor kit? Or a way to jerry rig it without harm? The new hard drive is a Maxtor 60G, 7200 Rpm. I would really like to try this myself rather than have a tech install it but not even being able to connect to begin with is frustrating.

A:WD external hard drive not mounting

I suppose you could try a different USB cable. Does it have another connection interface - like firewire? If so, try that.

Have you tried it on another computer. I have seen a WD external (a 2.5" one not a full size 3.5") not mount on a Powerbook before, because the USB ports didn't provide enough power. I have not seen that happen on a Macbook or MBP.

If it still doesn't work, and it isn't under warranty, you could open it up. But then you'll need a dock or an adapter to try to read the disk. Enclosures can die when the HD is still ok, but I don't have a real guess on how common that is (probably not very common).

Background:
I have an Acer Aspire X1800 in a ridiculously small case. Everything gets way too hot and no room for cooling. Plus according to eXtreme Power supply calculator the supplied 220W PSU is well below recommended minimum (and making noises!). So I've nearly finished moving the hardware across to a Thermaltake V4 case with 450W PSU ($73 all up).

Hi folks,

From searching the forum I've found a few threads describing a similar problem, but no solutions that work for my case.

I have a USB hard drive which has two partitions:
1 x 100GB partition formatted as FAT32
1 x 900GB partition formatted as NTFS

(these sizes aren't perfectly correct, but it's a 1TB drive that's split in 1:9 proportions)

On my Windows 7 laptop, both partitions are visible in My Computer, and I can read/write with no problems. (On the same laptop, an Ubuntu install can also see and use them perfectly)

On my new Windows 8 laptop, the 100GB FAT32 patition appears under My Computer normally, but the 900GB NTFS partition does not. If I go to Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management, I can see the partition. It has no drive letter or file system listed, reports as "healthy, primary partition" and shows 100% free space. If I right click on the drive's entry in the list, my only options are "delete partition" and "help"; everything else is greyed out.

So, to summarise:
One hard drive with two partitions. Both partitions work perfectly in Win 7 and Ubuntu. Win 8 can only see the FAT32 partition, and treats the NTFS partition as if it is junk.

Can anyone suggest a way to persuade Win8 to mount this partition? I know that the drive and partition are fine, but for some reason Win8 isn't interested.

A:Problem mounting partition on USB external hard drive

Is that 900GB drive blank? or does it have data on it?

If its blan,k delete the partition and recreate it under windows 8.

Hello,

I recently bought a Lacie 1TB external harddrive to store some of the data on my old PC (Win XP, SP2, I cant seem to udate to SP3 because windows update wont work).

The drive is working fine as I've used it on my laptop running Win Vista (64 bit). However, the drive is not being displayed in windows explorer. When I go to My Computer>Manage>Disk Management, I can see the drive there saying it's online, but there's no name attached to it and when I right-click, all the options are grey (otherwise I could of just changed the letter through there).

Using diskpart on command prompt, I still couldn't change the letter. I also found out that there is no volume assigned to this disk.

Can someone please help me?? I'd be forever greatful

A:USB external hard drive recognized but not assigned to a letter/not mounting (Win XP)

I didn't see where you formatted the hard drive. Before you can use any hard drive, external or internal, you have to format it at some point. For hard drives with Windows installed on them, they are usually formatted during Windows setup. For external storage drives, you can format it through Disk Management.

Hi all, I am in need of installing a second disk drive for my ThinkCentre E53 10AS. I read the manual, which has instructions on replacing the disk drive - it does mention that in order to install a second disk drive, to follow these same instructions! Of course, it would not be an identical process. For example, there are 3 SATA plugs on the mother board, SATA1, SATA2 (both red), and SATA3 (yellow). SATA1 is plugged into the HDD.

There is a box connected to the power button, that has two buttons on the back. SATA power and SATA data. The SATA power is connected to the HDD and the motherboard via a 4-wire cable. The SATA data is connected to the HDD via a ribbon SATA cable.

So, if I want to install a second HDD, do I use a SATA plug to connect it to the yellow SATA 3 plug?

Does the fact that the plug is yellow mean anything?

And finally, I have looked everywhere, but cannot figure out what the max HDD capacity would be for a secondary drive? I bought a WD Red 3TB. Hopeful it works?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

A:ThinkCentre (E53): need to install as secondary hard disk drive

According to the hardware maintenance manual for the E73, the two motherboard SATA connectors (which you say are red) are SATA3 which supports 6GB/s.  The third one (which you say is yellow) is SATA2 which supports 3GB/s.

Sinc you've bought a SATA3 drive, you should use the second red SATA3 connector to get maximum performance out of it.  Be sure you use a SATA3 data cable and not a SATA2 data cable, as that's part of the requirement to get SATA3 performance.

As far as drive capacity goes, there's no hardware limit pertaining to your E73.  However there IS a consideration depending on the fact that your drive is larger than 2TB.  In order for a new drive to be usable, it must be "partitioned" and "formatted with a file system".  And in order to use a drive larger than 2TB the partitioning technique must be GPT, and not MBR.

You can partition the new drive to have one or more partitions, but if you mistakenly use MBR as the partitioning technique only 2TB of the drive will be visible and usable for partitions.  And there will be a maximum of four "primary" partitions (or a maximum of three "primary" partitions and any number of "logical" partitions).  The extra 1TB of your new 3TB drive will be invisible and unusable.  And the largest MBR partition is also limited to 2TB.

In contrast, if you partition the drive using GPT (which is the modern partitioning method that is recommended), this method supports drives... Read more

A:ThinkCentre Tiny: add 2nd HDD, increase size of external HDD, 500GB Hard Drive Adapter (0A65638)

The Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny 500GB Hard Drive Adapter Kit  (about 100  bucks) can only be used in the the ThinkCentre Tiny Storage Unit Kit which is an external drive enclosure that must be purchased separately (about 40 bucks) that will accept a CD/DVD drive, or a hard drive caddy ( the Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny 500GB Hard Drive Adapter Kit).    I would imagine you could replace the 500G  2.5 inch SATA drive that comes with the Adapter kit/caddy for a larger drive, but if you goal is to just add an external HD, It would probably be easier (and cheaper) to just buy an external USB hard drive like this one. WD - My Passport 2TB External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive  ($79.99 for 2TB up to 119.99 for 4TB)http://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-my-passport-2tb-external-usb-3-0-portable-hard-drive-black/5605528.p?... Cheers,

I have a Dell Dimension 4550, with Win XP Pro, put in a salvaged Maxtor internal 40GB drive for extra storage, specifically a Maxtor 2F040L0 according to the device manager.

The problem is the second drive doesn't show up in "My Computer".

The main drive, a WD 160 GB: WDC WD1600BB-22GUC0, and the maxtor drive show up in in the device manager, no Exclamation points or Xs by either, I right-clicked on the maxtor drive and clicked properties the properties window came up and said there was no problem.
Opened Volumes tab and clicked populate, got an error: "Volume information for this Disk cannot be found. This may happen if the Disk is a 1394 or a USB device on a Windows 2000 Machine", this same error happens in the volumes tab for the Maxtor and the Western Digital, which is working just fine, so it may be a red herring

Attempted to update driver, no updates available, attempted a rollback of driver, no backups.
Uninstalled the driver and restarted, driver reinstalled but still having the same issue.
Downloaded and installed MaxBlast from Maxtor/Seagate website, no change.
shut down PC, Disconnected drive, restarted computer with just the main drive, works fine, shutdown and reconnected maxtor drive, restarted with both drives, maxtor drive still not showing in My Computer.

Now the drive may not have been wiped before the other machine crapped out, but I don't Know of any way to format it without a drive Letter.

Any help would be appreciated... Read more

Can someone assist me in finding out which option is best?

Should I use this Amazon.com: Monoprice 107637 1 Port Internal SATA to eSATA Bracket (107637): Computers & Accessories

or something like this: PCI Express SATA III Card - PCIe SATA 6Gbps | StarTech.com

Will the latter perform as fast as the former? (Or will the former even work given the lengths of the cables I have to use?)

Also, I'm getting really confused when it comes to the maximum length of the sata to esata. The esata bracket comes with a 20 inch cable... and the esata cable that comes with my external drive is about 20 inches. That makes an even 40 inches. I know the maximum sata length is 40 inches... and I don't want this 40 inch chain causing corruption.....

What should I do?

***I also want to make sure using the pci express port isn't going to cause any issues with the graphics card... and I really want to make sure I'm using the fastest method possible

A:PCI Express Esata Bracket or Direct Bracket?

bump. Right now, I'm averaging 110mb-150mb a second with this bad boy Amazon.com: Mediasonic ProBox HF2-SU3S2 4 Bay 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - USB 3.0 & eSATA, Support SATA 3 6.0Gbps hard drive transfer rate: Electronics (WD Caviar Black).
Through using a usb 3.1 port on my mobo.

Would sata be that much better?
