Laptop restarts every time it wakes up from sleep

Q: Laptop restarts every time it wakes up from sleep

Hello everyone. So since a few days my laptop has been acting strangely. Every time my laptop goes to sleep or I close the lid it restarts when I press a key or open the lid again. I have no idea what is triggering this. I tried resetting my laptop, but every time I do so my laptop restarts about half way through. I have looked at several settings like at the power options but nothing has worked so far. The way laptop restarts is different too. The ASUS logo appears twice and it takes a lot longer to restart than normal. I have an ASUS N551JB running Windows 10. I don't know what to do now, I have looked at several forums but nothing has worked so far. If anyone could help that would be great!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What do you mean by "Resetting may laptop"?

Did this machine come with Windows 10 or was it upgraded to it?

This has been a problem for the last couple of months.
If i 1. close the lid or 2. go to the so called "start" menu and hit sleep, about half the time I listen and hear that my laptop has restarted itself. If i keep the lid open and watch, it clearly restarts, and sometimes it brings me to that screen that says, windows has not started properly and it gives me the option to run normally or change to safe mode. i can run normally and everything is fine.
PLEASE do not tell me to go to power options because VISTA FAILS is not an option and my power options are just fine and do not have to do with this. I would like an intelligent answer. Thanks.

My recent install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit has been great except for one small problem. It wakes itself up every night around 9:30pm. I looked in the event viewer and found that the system either updates the time from the internet server or updates Media Center.

Is there any workaround that will get this to stop?

A:System wakes from sleep around the same time

In media center you should be able to adjust updates. The same go's for windows update. I always have mine manual. You could also go to your power options and click on advance to manually set each individual system setting.

Hello, I recently noticed this strange behavior in my pc. When I restart my computer, cpu usage will stay around 20%, and fluctuate the usage of my processes (system host and firefox being the big hitters) to maintain this general figure. Upon putting my computer to sleep and reawakening, the symptoms are the same, except the usage hovers around 40%. This will continue until usage hovers around 99-100%.

I also just noticed that your TSG SysInfo (included below) says i have windows defender disabled, but I have been under the assumption that it is enabled. It has been since i uninstalled AVG as this was once a heavy hitter in my processes and I thought a cause to some of this.

Before this I didn't think this was a virus, because I've run multiple malware searches including malwarebytes in and outside of safemode but now I'm not so sure.

Also most likely related, my pc takes (literal) hours to shut down.

Please help me!! This issue has been driving me nutzo, having searched up, down, and orthogonal to the internet for a remedy, but to no avail. As a computer science major this has also bruised my ego a bit

This has been an ongoing issue with my computer only waking from sleep half the time. The other half I need to actually power cycle my machine in order for it to wake. I know when it is going to wake properly because I hear the DAC on my Asus Xonar Essence STX Sound Card click on and if it's not going to work obviously I don't hear the click.

I have tried the following:

- Complete system rebuild with new hard drives, reinstall of windows
- All drivers updated and bios updated (I have been through a fair few driver updates because this has been an issue for over a year)
- New Memory installed
- Played with as many power settings in the bios as possible

I am really starting to think it is a hardware issue with either my motherboard or video card but don't have a spare of each of these and don't want to buy new stuff just to test it.

Here are my Specs:

CPU: Intel i7 2600

Memory: Kingston Hyper X 4x4GB (16GB Total)
PSU: Seasonic X Series 750w
Monitors: Samsung MD230x3 (3x23") 2 connected via DVI and 1 via DisplayPort

As mentioned the hard drives and memory were replaced so it can't be either of those. Also it can't be any settings because it does wake via my keyboard/mouse half the time. It is also hard to troubleshoot as it may work 3 times o... Read more

Hi! I have an Asus U56E running Windows 7. Sometimes, when I try putting it on sleep mode, the laptop wakes up again once the monitor has shut off. This is a seemingly random occurrence because I often put it to sleep with no problems; it is only sometimes that this wakeup happens. In one instance, I had to hit sleep mode three consecutive times before it would stay asleep.

I am sure that I don't hit any keys / mouse to wake it up, and it's pretty annoying. Do you have any insights on how to prevent this from happening?

As far as I know, laptops in sleep near battery death wake themselves up to go into hibernation. Problem is my laptop is waking up in the middle of the night from a near full battery to go into hibernation randomly (and blasting the music that was playing for the few seconds it takes before it hibernates). I'm also concerned of this happening while the laptop is in my backpack being shuffled about in sleep and just randomly waking up to hibernate. I don't want it to wake up automatically at all!

I don't have any devices waking it, such as mice or keyboards which wouldn't be the same anyway since that'd just wake up the laptop, not put it into hibernate afterwards.

I've had an HP dv5t laptop for about a year and a half (see specs), and so far (knock on wood) it's been pretty much perfect EXCEPT for one problem that has been happening on and off for the last several months. It occurs about once or twice a month for no apparent reason --- and I don't know if this this is a hardware or a software problem. What happens is that all of a sudden, for no reason my keyboard and touchpad/mouse are completely non-responsive -- and the only thing I can do is use the power button to shut down. When I reboot everything seems fine, until the next time it happens, a week or two later. It can happen when the laptop is running, but more often it happens when I open the lid after the system has been in Sleep mode. (I keep the laptop in 'Sleep' mode all the time when the lid is closed, and only fully "shut down" once in a while.) Everything seems to load properly --- the Desktop looks perfect and all my apps/icons are there, but the mouse won't move and the keyboard doesn't respond.

I'm afraid that my system is heading for a major problem and I'm trying to avoid it, if I can. I certainly don't want to have to send it in to HP for a repair --- as I've heard the horror stories. So I'm hoping that this will be a familiar problem to someone, that I can handle myself. What do you think?

A:Laptop Non-Responsive When Wakes Up From Sleep

Uh oh! Does the lack of response mean that I've got an unsolvable problem? Does anyone have any thoughts as to what the problem could be?

Alright,

I bought my hp dv4-1300 last spring. When Windows 7 came out I got my free MSDNAA copy from my engineering department, and did a clean install (7 Pro, 64-bit). After install, I went to Hp's website and got all the 64-bit drivers for my laptop (gfx, sound, buttons @ top, etc). All of them were digitally signed and installed correctly. I began to notice my battery being dead or near dead when using my laptop on campus. One time I removed it from my bag to find it ON, extremely hot, and the battery almost dead.

This has been going on for some time, and I've done alot to try to fix it.

First, I suspected some device ( like wake on LAN ) was waking the computer. I found the command line commands to see which devices are allowed to wake the computer during sleep, and this revealed no culprit.

Second, I tried looking at the Windows Event Logs. Im not too familiar with these logs but I will describe them best I can here. The event "Power Troubleshooter" is listed and has this as the description. [Note I put the computer to sleep by closing the lid (it does the same thing if i manually click sleep) at 5:23pm. At exactly 6:23pm, this is the event listed.

I've got a weird problem where after putting my laptop to sleep for the night I'll find it half-awake the next morning. By half-awake I mean that the computer is clearly active, hard drive is spinning and the fan is going but the screen is not on and I am not able to turn it on by any means (touching the screen, touching the touchpad, pressing the "screen on/off" key combination, closing and opening the lid, pressing the power button, etc.). I've found the only consistent way to get the computer out of this mode (barring forcing a shutdown by holding the power key) is to unplug it from power and then press the sleep button (Fn+F1) and wait for it to sleep again (this seems to only work if I unplug the power). After doing this, I'm able to wake the computer normally by pressing the power key.

I've already googled around but haven't been able to anyone with this exact problem, only people whose computers are fully waking from sleep. I've tried some of the troubleshooting I've found with those posts but the problem persists. This problem has been around ever since I got this laptop in January.

Some of the things I've tried:

powercfg ?lastwake: This does not really help in my situation because I have to force the computer to sleep again and then wake it by the power button in order for the computer to completely wake up. So this command just tells me that the computer last woke up from the power button

A:Laptop half-wakes from sleep by itself.

Could be a possible memory leak on the RAM sticks, as when the computer is put to sleep, all the information is stored in RAM, and when the computer wakes, its restoring everything saved in RAM.

You may want to do a memory test using memtest x86, do a few passes, just to make sure the RAM isn't causing the problem.

Other possible cause is faulty drivers. Unstable drivers can cause the computer not to restore from sleep. Make sure all of your device drivers are up to date.

Strange its waking at weird times.

Hello all,

So I've only noticed this recently since I usually am on AC power. These past few days, I've been using my battery. I've noticed that when I wake it up, I can punch in my password, no problem, then when it logs on, I have a few seconds where I can see my programs (Chrome, and maybe a Word document), and then everything becomes non-responsive. The taskbar disappears, and sometimes my desktop icons will disappear too. Then the computer shuts off, and reboots itself. I'm not sure what is going on. I've attached the SF Diagnostic files. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it helps:
-I am using an Asus U46e-BAL5 laptop (core i5)
-The primary drive is a Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD
-I took out the DVD drive and put in the original hard drive (Seagate 750GB)

All programs are installed on the SSD (and a few documents and random screenshots) and all downloads, movies, etc. are stored on the Seagate.

Thanks!

My laptop with Win 8.1 Pro x64 has two issues with power states which are not working correcttly. They are:

1-the laptop does not shut down completely; either by navigating to the power down option on the settings charm bar or by pressing the power button on the laptop (I set it to shut down instead of sleeping as default). The computers apparently starts powering down, but the power led never switches off, and the cooler keeps spinning. It won't turn off until I press and hold the power button or the battery drains up.

Of course, the same applies to hybernating; the OS saves the content of RAM and starts shutting down, but never completely shuts down. Ditto with "fast boot" enabled; it doesn't matter if it's on or off, the laptop still doesn't power down.

2-if the laptop sleeps, it simply won't wake up. The monitor turns off and you'd expect to press a keyboard key or move or click a mouse button to awaken it, but nothing happens. Again, all I can do is holding the physical power button to force a shutdown or wait until the battery is drained. When the laptop keeps stuck in sleeping mode, I notice that after some instants the Num Lock led keeps lit, and won't turn off even if I press the key.

What do you think might be happening, is it some issue with ACPI or power states? What do you suggest to fix those issues? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have a Lenovo Yoga 900 (Intel Core i7-6560U 3.2 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10) and have been experiencing the following issue since I purchased it: I put the laptop in sleep mode and into my laptop bag. The laptop will wake up by itself later despite the lid is closed. It then stays on as it's inside the laptop bag it gets very hot and drains the battery. Since this has happened closer to 10 times already I'm worried if the battery life is already damaged due to heating. Normally when I close the lid the laptop goes onto sleep mode.  I have already taken many measures to try and stop it from waking up from this article (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stop-windows-computer-randomly-waking/). I have set the power setting so that it should always go on sleep mode when the lid is closed. I don't understand how it goes on even when the lid is closed.  What could be the problem? This is what happened to me for the past few years. This week I just replaced my N650SLI-DS4 with an ASUS P8Z77-V LK board. The Asus also does NOT show the same issue that the GA-EP35-DS3L has. Could this just be an issue with the power supply?

Thanks,

npolite, it could be that you have "wake on lan" set on in your network card.

Hi there. Can't figure out why my HP laptop restarts when woken up from sleep. Under Windows 7, it worked fine. But not with Windows 8. I have played with all the settings in power configuration. Have changed from having a screensaver to none. Makes no difference. All my drivers are up to date. I do not have HP power management installed. Windows takes care of my power management. And still, it won't resume correctly. Thanks in advance for your tips.

Hello gallicbear,

I had the same issue on my desktop. Using the tutorial below to add AHCI Link Power Management - HIPM/DIPM to my power plan settings, and setting it to HIPM+DIPM for both "On battery" and "Plugged in" solved this for me.

Hopefully it will for you as well.

The Dell Laptop inspiron 15 AMD A10 processor 16GB RAM.
Ive been dealing with this issue for months and been on multiple forums with absolutely no solution.
The computer always sleeps on the first lid close, clicking start menu sleep button, and power button, AS IT SHOULD.
But when I open the laptop the 2nd time, I use it for whatever i need, and then I close the lid, or press power button, or click sleep in start menu, the whole computer does a restart.
So here is what happens if I wasnt clear ( 1st attempt to sleep works, 2nd attempt to sleep restarts, next sleep works, then the next sleep restarts, etc etc etc) **On each 2nd attempt to sleep, the fan and hardrive never turn off it just instantly restarts without pause**

This is a new laptop.

My dumpfile says something about a kernel power error each time the computer restarts on the 2nd sleep attempt, but all the support has ignored that for some reason. I will be more than happy to supply a link to my dumpfile if someone would like to have a look at it.
Solutions Ive already tried:
I updated all drivers
repaired windows 10 with .ISO
set powerplan to sleep on lid close and vice versa
set powerplan to never sleep and vice versa
set powerplan to never turn off hardrive and vice versa
set powerplan to never hibernate or hybrid and vice versa
No wake timers in powerplan
No devices are waking up the laptop including wireless internet and display
I turned off fast startup in powerplan

Hi,

I have HCL ICON 1015 laptop, I have brand new HDD installed and just installed Windows 7.

My problem is when I shutdown my laptop every thing looks fine i.e. logging off, shutting down. But after couple of minutes the rotating wheel in front of "SHUTTING DOWN" stops rotating, power LED stays on and fan also stays on. HDD stops blinking.

My laptop is 3 years old and power LED is no longer as bright as it used be.

Thanks for you time and consideration.

Hi all, My t450s restarts instead of waking from sleep when it's been left in sleep for a prolonged period. It has happened multiple times and I cannot figure out what the issue is. It seems to only happen when the laptop is not plugged in to AC. That is, it always boots fine when it's waking while it's plugged in. What gives? How can I fix this? Cheers,

A:T450s laptop restarts instead of waking from sleep

Hi,

You're sure it's cold booting and not resuming from hibernation?

Have you checked you sleep settings to make sure it's not set to hibernate after a set time when on battery?  That's how I have mine set:  sleep and if that goes on for an extended time, hibernate.

Z.

This is a strange issue that started happening to me a few weeks ago. On my laptop, I put the computer to sleep, then close the lid. To wake it up, I just open the lid. Recently, about 1/4 of the time I wake up my computer, the lock screen does not appear, but instead it seems that my computer crashes then restarts. I don't have any USB devices plugged into my laptop, just the power cord. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hello.

After upgrading from windows 8 to windows 10, the laptop wont wake up correctly and just restart.

I have an Asus Q551LN

* Upgraded the latest drivers of everything, including the intel hd graphics, the same with the nvidia integrated ones and then downgraded.
* I did a clean install of my OS.
* Checked and settled many options in the power management, recommended from other users/forums/etc.
* Disabled and Enabled again the Intel Management Engine
* Flashed new BIOS firmware.

Nothing worked for me.

If someone can help me clarify the problem, I would be very grateful.

My laptop automatically restarts itself 50% of the time when I close the lid. (I have it set to sleep / Hibernate)
Here is a crash dump Analysis.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, this analysis is not complete. In general, if the error is a BugCheck Code 0x9F and the first parameter (the number after 0x9F) is 3 - then the cause is usually not the faulting driver. A full analysis of the memory dumps may reveal the faulting driver name. But the good news is that this is the type of error that's caused when there are problems entering sleep/hiberate - so it's likely to be fairly easy to fix.

ok every time i turn on the computer, it restarts by itself before i can log on. then it will just endlessly restart itself until i shut it off.
occasionally i can hold esc and it will log on properly, but it takes a really long time and doesnt always work.
im using a Windows XP laptop, and i did a virus scan and deleted all the dangerous files.
i even unchecked "automatically restart" for a system failure and nothing happened
i dont know whats wrong and i really dont know what else to do!

Hi there, I suppose this issue could be seen as a need for a tweak (but apologise if I am posting in the wrong forum).

I have had this issue for a while with my Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop.

It is a guess, but i'd say 5/10 times the power cord comes out of the laptop (for whatever reason - moving it etc) then the laptop will simply black screen and instantly restart and boot up again without an error message or any information as to why.

This doesn't make any sense to me because every time I do have the battery pack inserted into the laptop and over 30% battery life (this is when ill plug the charger in).

If anyone has any ideas, please do post that would be super.

Thanks a lot, Nick

A:Laptop restarts 50% of the time when the power cord comes out

The power cord issue could just be a red herring.

How long have you had this computer? The reason I ask is that it's quite possible the CMOS battery wants changing.

The batteries normally have a life of three to five years depending whether it is a rechargeable battery or not.

You mention inserting the laptop's battery pack. Is there any particular reason why you remove it in the first place?

Ever since I installed the Beta, then throughout various builds up to the current 64 rc 7100. My Studio xps wakes from sleep? Vista 64 premium did not cause this behavior. I've gone through my advanced sleep options and have them set to let the computer sleep even if streaming is present (not that is is when this happens) ....it is not a virus for the above mentioned reasons. All clean iso installs have produced same behavior. Being as I have no operative help I ask my fellow forum users.

This is my first post to this forum, so this is hello! Obviously my problem is my pc wont sleep, it wakes a second or two after I press sleep. I checked google and this forum for a few hours and come up empty handed. Event viewer has no record of the pc even going into sleep mode, through the filter "power - troubleshooter". Any help would be appreciated and I can provide more info if needed. Thanks for your time
