I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello! New to WE 7 and laptops/touchpads, I initially created havoc in WE libraries copying files etc unintentionally. I gradually sorted out the Libraries but find that I do not have the WE Favourites 3 default file folders (Desktop etc.) showing. Favourites will not expand. If I look under my User Account I can see the folders; I cannot seem to copy or move them into WE Favourites! Can any more experienced WE user help me - without having to do a Restore?

try this:
check this location: C:\Users\*Your user name*\Links
if the folder "Links" doesn't exist anymore, create a new one, then right-click on “Favorites” in Windows Explorer and choose "reset favoritelinks", close explorer, and open it again

and also take a look at this link: User Folders - Restore Default Location

Clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate here and so far I love this new OS. However, I noticed that I cannot add any items under the favorites "star" icon that can be found on the left pane in windows explorer.

I tried drag & drop and "add current location to Favorites" but nothing works. I'm not getting any error either which is weird.

Any help? I'm new to win 7.

Very weird.

Only thing I can come up with is that something you installed must block this.

Any explorer addons or tweaks installed?
Any file hacking?

If you didn't I'm clueless, and that doesn't happen to often.

New W7-x64 user here

1. I would like to know if there is a
way to get the Favorites that is in the left hand navigation
panel on the Windows Explorer toolbar beside "Organize.....Open....New folder"
(or the very least in the "File....Edit...Tools....View...Help"
Menu bar)

2. Is there a way to get the Up functionality in Windows
Explorer itself without replacing the Explorer with Classic Shell
& the likes?

3. Can I somehow highlight the Parent Folder in the Windows Explorer
address bar? That would make navigating extremely easier.

Thank you!

A:Favorites Tab on Windows Explorer Toolbar?

Classic Shell doesn't replace Explorer. It simple augments it with additional features. Each feature is disableable.
It will solve your problems 1&2. Another solution for 2 is to install Wnidows 8 Beta, which also has the Up button.

I am assuming that Favorites is inside of "Documents and Settings", which Win 7 does NOT allow me access.

Do I really have to Take Ownership of "Documents and Setting" and then reset the permissions?

I just can NOT fathom anyone in their right minds making "Documents and Settings" a systems folder to begin with, but alas they did.

Anyway I would like comments on how to show Favorites in Windows Explorer. Thank You

A:Show Favorites in Windows Explorer

you'll find your internet favourites in c:\users\*your user name*\favorites

the 'Documents and Settings' folder is a sort of virtual folder put there by the OS so that old programs which rely on it will still work.

HELP----My son reformatted his hard drive of about 10GB. He has windows xp home edition. He thought his favorites would be saved. Does anyone know of a freeware program he can use to retrieve his favorites. Thanks for any assistance.

A:retrieval of lost favorites in Windows Explorer

Well, did he format the drive on which Windows and other softwares were installed? If yes, then there is no tool to help you out. He probably messed his computer by doing this blindly. I have heard about a software but i don't think it really works. You may want to check it out.

O&O DiskRecovery 4

Try it and see if it works for you or not. Atleast, they state so in the features section that it can "retrieve" or "reconstruct" files from even a formatted hard drive. This is the time to test it. Go ahead and see if it really works. Otherwise, I don't think it is possible to retrieve the lost favourites again. Tell me how it goes. Good Luck.

Hi Guys,

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop full Windows 7 and an Acer Aspire Netbook full Windows 7. On the Netbook in Windows Explorer I see the option for "show desktop" in the Favorites section by default. On my Toshiba I don't see it. I did add a quick launch to my start bar on the Toshiba and I can't drag the show desktop from it over to the favorites in Windows Explorer.

I did find on this site the hot key "windows + d" shows the desktop but I would like to put show desktop in my Favorites also.

I just engaged in this crusade today so when I figure it out I'll post my solution. Although I expect that one of you guys will have the answer. Cuz you cool like that.

Hello, Extatic here. I've come across an error and I was wondering if any of you could help. I've read up on some tutorials on how to fix this, but none of them have worked.

My "Favourites" within Windows Explorer is broken. It will not work. I can't add anything in there, and I can't restore the previous favourites. I believe I deleted my default "Links" folder in my C:\Users\(UserName) folder by accident when cleaning it up, and don't know if restoring that (somehow) will hold the key to my troubles.

Either way, I'm completely stumped as to what to do! I've tried registry editing, and I've tried re-adding the links folder manually, but nothing has worked! It bugs me as I've usually got to use some folder links there for quick access, and would like this matter resolved ASAP!

Hi everyone,

Firstly just wanna say thanks heaps to all the brainy people from this forum. Helped me time and time again and appreciate it heaps

Ok, so i'll quickly explain how it got to be this way to begin with and apologies for the long post.
Basically, recently i was looking in disk management and noticed my system drive was not set as active so i right clicked and set it as active.
After rebooting i got the "bootmgr is missing" msg so i popped in my win 7 disk and repaired it. Note.. the only way it worked was if i unplugged my other drives.

So i check back in explorer and notice that the system reserved 100mg partition is now D drive instead of F which is what it was before and my other hard drives are now different letters.

This completely screwed me up because my main data drive used to use the letter D and i had options in programs, shortcuts and other stuff pointing to folders in D:\*.
What stuffed up the most was my normal user folders. My documents... My Music... etc.
Originally, after first installing OS i had changed location of c:\users\tom\my documents to d:\my documents and did the same to links, favorites, my music etc.
I figured i could just go in to c:\users\tom\ and do it again, ie change the locations to E:\ ... where they are now but all that was there was the my documents and my music which was strange so i changed those only.

So anyhow, now that all my user data folders are using E:\... it for some reason doesn't wanna allow me to d... Read more

Bought new computer with 256GB SSD C: drive and 4TB D: drive. Setup and data transfer by Staples tech put everything on the smaller C: drive. I worked hard to move as much as possible to large D: drive, as C: nearly full. I placed my Documents, Music, and Pictures files on D: drive.

I very much want the Windows Explorer Libraries to point to the appropriate folders on my D: drive. I presume that I can change some Registry entry or perform some other manipulation to bring about this switch. How?

A:In Windows Explorer, how to make Libraries point to D: drive?

In a forum post I read that the path to "hidden" libraries is

I get as far as Roaming, and the only folder there is Intel\Wireless\Settings, where the last folder shows "This folder is empty." I cannot get to the rest of the tree. If I could then I might find pointers to actual folders that I could change as desired.

Because certain things were preinstalled, and their locations are presumably locked into the Registry, a Dell support person told me that I absolutely could not change their locations. So I would want the Win Explorer Libraries to display the default stuff plus my D: folders.

Is this asking for too much?

I'm having a couple of problems with Windows 7 Home Premium x64. The first one is an ongoing issue that has existed since I first purchased this laptop, a Portege R705-P35 (HDD replaced with 256GB Torqx SSD). Approximately 1-2 weeks following a rollback with System Restore, or a full OS restore from an Acronis True Image 2010 archive, Windows Explorer will suddenly stop responding during an attempt to copy & paste a file(s) from the desktop to another folder; after Explorer restarts, cut & paste succeeds on the second attempt. It doesn't start happening constantly after the first incidence (it is totally at random), but it does increase in frequency.

The second issue is newer, having existed for about a month: the oldest System Restore point always gets corrupted. Whenever I empty out my restore points following a significant change, I now start out with two restore points, and let the first one serve as a sort of buffer. Still, I am extremely anal about system stability, and find this less than acceptable.

I have attached event logs for both incidents. SFC isn't finding any problems, and malware scans come up clean as always. Any help would be appreciated, but I'd much prefer a "patch and move forward" solution, involving a targeted fix; starting from scratch is overkill for minor issues like these IMO, as Windows will eventually find another way to break itself. Everything else works flawlessly at the moment; it's just these two,... Read more

We could narrow that problem down - it apparently only occurs if Favorites are redirected to a file share and Enhanced Protected Mode ist enabled.

I have a Windows 7 Ultimate dual booting with Windows 8 Consumer Preview on a Dell XPS 410. When I bring up Windows Explorer on the Desktop app, I would like to add several folders to the "Favorites" section of the navigation pane on the left side of the window, as I have done in Windows 7. However, I don't seem to be able to do it. I have tried dragging the folder in the right pane onto the Favorites link, as I do in Windows 7, but nothing happens; the folder is not added to the list (which, by the way, is empty.) I have also tried navigating to the folder I want to add to Favorites and then right clicking the Favorites link and selecting the option from the context menu of "add current location to favorites", but again nothing happens.

On the off chance that it might be a corrupted system file, I just finished doing a System File Checker with the SCANNOW option, but no problem was detected by SFC.

I wonder if this is a bug in the Consumer Preview? Has anybody else encountered this problem? I also would like suggestions for what else to try to correct the problem, if it seems to be a problem with my system but nobody else's...

You might check your Recycle Bin to see if they may still be in it. If so, then you could restore them from the Recycle Bin.
If you only deleted them in the "C:\Users\(user-name)" folder, then you could use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to restore them. Most like using only step 1 should do it since you only deleted them.

When you save a site into your Favorites it leaves an icon that represents the site on your list. but after a couple of days the icon just turns back to the explorer page symbol. Is it just my pc? Can something be done to keep the icons permanantly?

A:Explorer Favorites

That is called Favicon. It resides in your cache (Temporary Internet Files). Everytime you clean your cache, you delete them.

If you encounter one and want to keep it, go there and locate it. Store it in a folder where you know where it is. Rename it to a name which represents the site it is for. Then in you favorites, right click on the site and choose properties. Click the change icon button. Navigate to where you saved the favicon and choose it to be there permanently.

Or some people use a program to do it for them. There are some freeware ones out there, you would have to search with Google.

Also, when I try to use Explorer's `Help' index, I get the message that I'm copy-pasting below. I've read through it and all of the things it says to check are checked already.

Can someone please offer some advice?

Thanks much,

Andrea Snyder

See if you have the URL you are trying to load are blocked. Check IE's Restricted Sites first (Tools > Internet Options > Security > Restricted Sites > Sites and check the list). If you have security software, like McAfee, you may have URL's blocked there as well.

See if there is a more recent update for IE-6 (IE-7 for XP is not experiencing same problem). Found a blog that talks about a lot of people having problems with the August.06 update from MS and some suggested remedies. You can read it at:

In vista on the left pane in explorer it was split between the regular file navigation and a favorites area at the top. The favorites was always available and allows for you to click on your most used folders faster. In Vista the favorites isn't pinned up there anymore. Any one know of a way around this? I could create a bunch of "send too's" to replace being able to just drag stuff into my favorites but that is more work.

A:Explorer Favorites Pinning

here's mine - i haven't changed any of the defaults, and as you can see, the faves are there...

you do have the navigation pane enabled under Organize -> Layout?
