Short battery life for Spectre

Q: Short battery life for Spectre

When I got my Spectre about 6 mo ago I go 8-10 hrs on a charge when doing word processing and e-mail. However that recently dropped to less than 4 hrs. After spending several hours with HP Support, we could find nothing obviously wrong with the machine. A look at the Task Manager CPU useage revealed nothing extraordinary and the HP Battery check indicated the battery was "ok". In preparing to send the machine back to HP, I decided to first try to reimage it, i.e. wipe the disk and reload the operating system. HP makes this easy to do. Once the new image was installed I methodically loaded each of my major applications one-by-one and retested the battery life after each install. I now get 8-10 hrs of battery life. During this process I did not update any of the drivers. This suggests that one of the recent driver upgrades is the culprit to my battery problem so I'm now much more cautious in accepting these. I always do a restore point before proceeding and test the battery life afterwards. Testing the battery life can be done in several ways. The key is consistency. The method I use is to edit the power settings so that the screen stays on and the machine remains awake. I then just let it sit for a while. I typically see a loss of 10% of battery power per hour. Prior to the reimage I saw 25-30% reduction per hour.

Hi! I purchased my laptop around 3 to 4 months ago via my school. Initially, the laptop was able to live up to its claims of a "long battery life" but within 2 months, the battery life had decreased from 10 hours to 2-3 hours. Moreover, the laptop seems to be very laggy, despite the fact that the majority of my files are stored in Dropbox and I rarely have anything more than a few google chrome tabs open (and occasionally a microsoft word document open). Are there ways to solve this? Should I purchase a new battery?

Just bought the new 4k 13 inch spectre x360. So far it has been great, except that I am getting nowhere near the advertised battery life. I have already researched these forums, and read the tips located here - http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c00596784 - and here (translated from Spanish to English) - http://h30467.www3.hp.com/t5/Consejos-de-Expertos-para-notebooks/Consejos-de-mantenimiento-de-Bater%... - and nothing has helped.  In just 2 hours of up time with the screen set to 50% or less, I reached 20% battery remaining. This was only with web browsing and some office processses such as email and Microsoft Word. Do I have a bad battery, or is the battery life overall just not as good (or even close to) advertised? The laptop is less than 30 days old.

Hi forumi have had my X220 for many years, and i have always been very happy with it.  Not using it so much right now, but it is still important to me.After i updated to Windows 10, i noticed that the battery life was getting shorter - and the battery is even drained when the X220 is not used.  My 6 and 9 cell batteries did the same, so i thought that it was because they are old (5-6 years i guess).  Therefore i bought a new 6 cell battery ...... but unfortunately it behave in exactly the same way.  When fully charged and used for max 20 minuttes pr. day, after 3 days the battery is 'flat'.Does anyone have any idea what to do?Best regardsHenrik - Denmark

We purchaced a dozen X1 carbon 3444-CU laptops a while back and were seeing short battery life and they seem to be getting hotter then what I would concider "normal". I'm looking to find out what the "normal" is. Our users have an RPD session constantly open along with between 1-5 chrome tabs. What is the battery life range on a X1 carbon 3444-CU?What is the max heat that the X1 carbon 3444-CU is going to give off?

A:Short Battery Life, but a lot of heat.

Hi cdeveringham, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!
According to the PSREF (PDF), when new that machine delivered "up to 8.2 hr" of life. It won't get anywhere near that for two reasons: 1. The machine is at least 5 years old and the battery will be close to the end of its life ,and normal aging results in degraded runtime (unless you replaced it). 2. The claimed runtime, particulalry at that time, assumed a favorable setup rarely used in real life. I would assume about half for a new battery, less if your setup is more power-hungry.
As for them getting hotter than "normal" it's possible that what today's Windows and applications are working the machine harder than they were 5 years ago. Lenovo doesn't publish "max heat given off".
Hope this helps!

I just recently bought this yoga 720 and saw online that the battery life is supposed to be around 8 to 10 hours. However, I am only getting around 4 hours of battery life. Does anyone know how to fix this problem or what might be causing it. Recently I've only been watching youtube videos so I'm not running any super intensive programs. I have 8th gen i7, 16gb ram, 1 tb ssd, and the uhd 620 graphics card.

A:Yoga 720: short battery life

YouTube videos can be more intensive than you think. And there may be other things running in the background (virus scanners, Windows Updates, cloud storage synchronization) that are shortening your battery life. Battery life claims on just about anything battery-powered are usually best-case scenarios. I can get 6-8 hours out of my 920. But to do that, I do little more than word processing in airplane mode with the screen brightness as dim as I can handle it. Virus scanners are disabled, no external devices attached. If I connect it to my television and stream Amazon movies with the wireless keyboard and mouse attached for control, then 4-5 hours is about all I get, too.
Check Task Manager to see what else is runing. Tweak your virus scanner and any other background programs you have. Turn off anything you can. That'll stretch it.

My new HP Spectre get very very very hot on the underside when operating for only a short time.  In addition, it has lost battery life.  It now only gets about 4 hours before needing a recharge.  The documentation indicates a battery life of 11+hours.  This is not the case.  The product is only about 2 months old - still under warranty.   Is this a common issue - I have seen reviews of it running warm but this is so hot it appears something is wrong.  In addition, is the loss of battery life related?  And how do we get the battery issue resolved under warranty.

Hello. My 4th gen ipod's battery is quite short (4-5 hrs) after a full charge. I did all of the recommendations to extend battery life and charge from the wall mount. Also I noticed that when I synch my ipod to my computer, the back gets quite hot and the screen starts to fade and flicker. It's only after I disconnect the ipod to let it cool does the screen comes back. Is there a primary harddrive issue or is the motherboard messed up. I also replaced the battery already thinking the original one was dying. But that didn't seem to help any.

I've already re-formatted the iPod and restored it last night. Haven't tested it yet. Would replacing the harddrive fix this problem. I suspect the harddrive is constantly spinning when it should be resting between accesses.

A:Yoga 2 11 Running hot with short battery life

Hi David_EMG  ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
It would help if you can generate a battery report ( ac charger unplugged).
How is the battery health if you hover the cursor on the battery icon below?
Battery is a consumable part and depletes its resources in time and heat is one of the factors that can affect battery life. Try running hardware diagnostics along side with this and this test for comparison.
Check the battery status LED indicator (page29) if it goes to the changes from amber blinking to solid white on full charge .  Calibration either using the energy manager via battery gauge reset can also help. Manually you can allow the battery to completely drain and wait for 1-2 hours and then charge it full.

I recently purchased an Asus N56V Series laptop. The laptop has impressive specs, including an i7 Core and a Nvidia GT 635M graphics adaptor, so I can understand it having a below average battery life. However, I am only getting 1 to 2 hours of battery life on it, even when I am not running processor and graphic intensive programs. Product review indicate that will battery life for this laptop is below average, the battery should still last 4 hours under normal conditions.

Is there any reason why my battery life is so limited? Has anyone else had similar problems with this model of laptop?

Thanks for the help.

Hi All Day 2 using new Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6 Gen (HD touchscreen), 8GB RAM. The battery life seems to be about half the 10-14 hours advertised. Alarming. Wondering if it's a manufacture fault or pains reverting back to Windows OS/Lenovo from Apple Macbook Air 11 inch which has 1/3 to double battery life even though it's approaching 4 years old. Or does the battery need to 'warm up' so to speak, i.e. will get better. I keep screen low to medium brightness and sync basic folders. Feeling a bit cheated. Also the 8 GB Ram isn't hot stuff. Regretting not going for the 16 GB. It's a good product but not special. Any views from people? richard

Hi Techie_28,
Thanks for posting.
I apologize that your battery isn't lasting as long as you expected it to.  Batteries normally last between a year and 18 months under normal use.  Dell provides a 1 year battery warranty which is described below:
Batteries for portable systems and mobile devices are not covered under the same terms as the system warranty. Agents should see the procedure below for determining the warranty of the battery in question.

The standard warranty for a portable computer and/or mobile device FRU battery is 1-year from the date of initial shipment or 90 days from when the battery was last replaced.
Out of Warranty batteries that are replaced using the OWR process described below have a 1 year warranty from the date of service.
Accidental Damage (Complete Care) for portable batteries is covered for the period of the battery warranty if the customer has purchased an Accidental Damage (Complete Care) contract.
Dell Accidental Damage Service does not cover any damage to or defect in the battery that is cosmetic only or otherwise does not affect functionality. Dell is not obligated to repair reasonable wear and tear on the battery and other superficial items, such as scratches and dents that do not materially impair use of the battery.

Hope this helps.

Hi,  I was not super sure as to where to post this so I put "Notebook Video, Display and Touch".So I bought this new HP Spectre x360 about a week ago during the cyber sales in preparation for classes at University next semester as I was wanting something small, lightwieght, and with a long lasting battery that could get me though the shcool day. I love everything about this laptop except it seems to have a very short battery life. When I bought it, all the tech reviews and the official HP website claimed an 11 to 12 hour battery life, however I cannot seem to get more than around 4 or 5. Perhaps the battery is bad?I do not know too much about computers so I had my brother help me choose the model. I have the i7 6500u, 16gbs of ram, and a 512gb SSD. My brother said with these specific components, the battery life could be effected a little bit but was under the impression that it would still be able to serve me at least 8 hours while at school. Should I contact HP support about the battery life problem? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

When I got my order which I'm expecting it's brand new product, however after 2 weeks of using it I observed that the battery life has short period of time to think that I fully charged it. Because of these I return my laptop in the store to give complain regarding this matter. The store took it for repair and until now it's almost a month I haven't received any update regarding the status of my laptop. And I'm paying for the laptop which I haven't use. I recently bought my Spectre x360 and overall I am very happy with my purchase. However, I am a bit concerned with battery life. For my version (i7 processor and UHD screen) I am only achieving about 5 hours usage from each charge. I had expected nearer 9 hours from the adverts for the model. Reading messages from other users I seem to find that to achieve nearer 9 hours i should lower screen brightness to about 50%. Surely the main reason for buying a notebook with a UHD-4K screen is for the display to be bright especially when watching videos (Nertflix, iPlayer etc).Any suggestions about improving battery life please

Hi All

I have problem that my C50t-A battery life is very short (less than two hours) and usually use laptop for reading, so how to check the actual battery life and if there is problem in my battery. The application of health monitor shows me the battery health is good, but this actually not correct since I need to charge my laptop each two hours or may be less and this very noising since sometimes not easy to get charging in any place. Is there any programm or application to check my laptop battery?

A:Toshiba Satellite C50t-A - battery life is very short

Download a program called HWMonitor from cpuid.com to view the wear level of the battery.

Lithium batteries only last about 3-4 years before needing replacement. They lose about 20%-30% capacity every year.

Short Battery Life Sinks First Windows 8 Notebooks

Confusing dual-mode operating system, no Start button, counterintuitive swipe gestures? None of these things spells doom for Windows 8. What will kill Microsoft's newest operating system is the abysmal battery life of the systems on which it's supposed to perform the best.

For all of Windows 8's strengths, its one major weakness might be something no one saw coming; significantly worse battery life than the previous generation of PCs.

Leading up to the launch of Windows 8, we saw progressively longer endurance on the two most-portable categories of notebooks. As of September, the average ultraportable (a notebook with a screen size of 11 to 13 inches and weighing less than 4 pounds) lasted 6 hours and 52 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test (Web surfing via Wi-Fi, screen at 40% brightness). The average thin-and-light (12 to 14 inches, less than 6 pounds) was right behind, at 6 hours and 40 minutes.
However, when we started adding Windows 8 notebooks to the mix, those averages receded faster than Steve Ballmer?s hairline. By November, the ultraportable average dropped by half an hour, and the average thin-and-light decreased by 10 minutes. A number of challenges face OEMs and Microsoft when it comes to the adoption of Windows 8, from design to pricing. But solving all those issues will be moot until they fix the most basic requirement for any laptop ? good battery life. www.laptopmag.com

I bought the i7, QHD version of the Spectre convertible laptop two days before Christmas. Overall, I think it's a great product - which makes it even sadder that I'm thinking of returning it.The advertisements said 11 hours of battery life. Now, obviously that's not going to be accurate for normal everyday usage, but the salespeople in the store (and common sense) said that it would probably still get at least an eight hour, more like nine hour battery life on a single charge. Nope! FOUR HOURS. That's ridiculous. That's just over a third of the advertised battery life.I thought (and still think) it might be an issue with the battery itself, as the computer runs really really hot - it's basically impossible to put this thing on my lap at times. Which is annoying. But I did the HP Support Assistant battery check and it said it was fine, and then I did the BIOS battery check and it passed. And then the HP staff member I was chatting with on the support system had the gall to say "4 hours is actually really good". NO, IT IS NOT REALLY GOOD. Similar laptops in this category get about 7 hours of real time use. I bought this computer in large part because of that puported long battery life, and all the reviews said that the battery life was pretty great - none mentioned being four hours. Were reviewers sent different computers? And this four hours is not playing video games on full brightness settings. No. This four hours is on 25% brightness, power saver mode on, battery saver mode ... Read more

The HP spectre x360 is advertised as having up to 12.5 hours of battery life.    I even asked HP.com Sales Rep and Microsoft Sales reps too since they had a hand in building this and are selling it.     I was so excited when I got it until 4 hours later when it died. I just bought the Spectre 360 and am having the same overheating issues as above.  One of the main reasons for the purchase was the hyperbaric cooling system so the laptop would not overheat.  This one is so hot to the touch within an hour of turning it on that it burns my leg if I am using it on my lap.  When on a table, the bottom vents are covered but the side vents are not.  This is a laptop, it is not built to carry around a cooling table, it is meant to be portable.  Mine is less than 12 hours old and I feel as though I need to return it too.  Any updates to this issue before I do that? Thanks.

Hi All,

I am having a problem with my Acer aspire s3 ultrabook (i7 2637 4GB ram running windows 7 home premium 64 bit).

The fan is on all the time, really loud and noisy, and the laptop is usually heating up too rapidly, and the battery life is less than 1 hour on power saving mode!! I don't know how it became this way, but I think that I once downloaded the windows 8 preview, installed it, but nothing happened, and I could not detect it on the control panel or in my hard-drive, it just disappeared, and my laptop has not been well eversince. I am not sure If I want to restore it or if I have a restoration point before the problem, but I have important software I do not want to lose. Is there any solution for that?

A:laptop heating, fan loud, battery life short in windows 7

Welcome to SF. Have you ever opened the bottom up to change ram or your HDD? I would open it up and see how much that exposes the guts and especially the fan which I would take a very close look at and then clean it with air and a damp q-tip. Air flow is critical and these fans get dirty and even clumps of dust can break off and slow if not block the flow of air.

Hello, I got my 2016 HP Spectre x360 (Kaby Lake) laptop a week ago, and it seems the battery life is very underwhelming. I get around 4 hours from mixed usage (browsing/productivity/media). I had the previous gen. Spectre and almost similar tasks got me 8hr+ battery life. I've tried battery testing/calibration etc. suggested in the support pages. Anyone else having similar problems? I want to give the laptop some chance before I replace/return it.

I have had my HP Spectre for a year.  Only on occasion do I use something requiring graphics. Mostly I am using word and power points at the moment.  This past week, all the sudden my computer is overheating and I am only getting about 2 hours of batterylife whereas a few weeks ago I was getting at least 5 hours if not more (sometimes average around 7).  I shut down my computer last night with over 50% of battery life and booted it up today and it had 20%.  And was instantly hot to the point it is hard to do anything on it.   Has anyone experienced this?  The computer is just barely a year old.  My HP computers in the past normally last about 4 years before giving me problems.   I suspect it is because of the recent update to Windows 10 that happened last week that I was forced into, but I can't figure out how to problem shoot that.

The HP spectre x360 is advertised as having up to 12.5 hours of battery life. I was so excited when I got it until 4 hours later when it died. So I set out to maximize its battery life to get the advertised 12 hours. Yet, after taking ABSOLUTELY EXTREME measures to extend its battery life to the fullest, I was ONLY able to get 8 hours of battery life. Here's what I did (My laptop is fully updated latest drivers and everything): Generated a Battery Health Report (everything looked good)Used HP's 'Support Assistant' Battery Check and it came back "OK".Turned on 'Powersave Mode' (this dims the screen even at 100%)Reduced the screen brightness to 70%Limited my use to just ONE program (Microsoft Edge) with super quick use of a few other programs.Disabled Cortana.Disabled One Drive sync.Disabled Desktop Slideshow.Disabled ALL auto startup processes services that I knew to be safe to disable. (I disabled things like Bonjour service, google update, microsoft update and adobe update services). Went into advanced power options & set the "Maximum Processor Performance" to 60% (this caps it at 1.48GHz)Even set the WiFi to "Maximum Battery Savings".Then thought "Oh what the hell" and set EVERYTHING to "Maximum Battery Savings" (things like the GPU, the hard drive, etc).Went into the BIOS and disabled the 'eternal flame' LED indicator  on the F5 key. After exactly 8 hours of use I was down to 14% so I turned off the wifi a... I just purchased the new Spectre x360 (i5 6200u version, model number d108) and I'm experiencing muddling battery life. I only seem to be managing around 6 hours or so of casual browsing. This is with the screen brightness down to the lowest possible, killing/removing unnecessary programs and barely anything running in the background other than Google Drive. I've seen a review which managed to get 9 hours of browsing and that was on the version running the Broadwell CPUs which are supposedly not quite as efficient as the newest ones. So what's going on here? I know manufacturers exaggerate but half the marketed time with minimal load and lowest brightness doesn't seem right?

A:Spectre x360 Poor battery life (Skylake version)

Hi @fanalk,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Spectre x360 with poor battery life. Battery life will vary depending on numerous factors including product model, configuration, loaded applications, features, use, wireless functionality, and power management settings. The maximum capacity of the battery will naturally decrease with time and usage. Here is a link to a performance troubleshooter with Windows. Biggest thing is the Apps are not closed or stopped. Please let me know how this goes.Thanks.

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

Hey, I really need help. I'm having problems with my laptop. It's a dell inspiron 7559 and was bought around January. Recently I have seen that the battery has no longer been as hot as it used to be when I first started using it. Along with the sleeve on the tip of the screen power adapter (below the part where the adapter lights up) has started to come off, exposing the wires. The battery has continually dropped down its percentage rate ever since I bought it, and it won't go back up. It is currently at 0% battery life and it says when you highlight over the battery icon ( plugged in, not charging). It also happens to show the BIO setup when I start the computer and shows that the batteries wattage and type cannot be determined. In the BIOS setup, the ac adapter type is unknown. The battery has not been through any harsh conditions along with the laptop. I have tried removing the battery, starting up the computer with the ac adapter (which is 130 watts), then adding the battery back, and ac adapter, then turning it on, but it had no effects. If I remove my ac adapter while my computer is on ,it instantly turns off. If someone can support me with this issue, it would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds likely the charge circuit on the mainboard is damaged.  Contact Dell to have the mainboard replaced under warranty.

Why is HP  so shy of giving a Life-Time Warranty for their Notebooks....?

A:Most Disappointing "Short-Life" of HP Warranty....!!!

Hi, Do you know what is Life-Time Warranty REALLY means ? All standard consumers products have 1 year or 2 years (in some countries) warranty. Not just HP, all of them. You can BUY option or options to get more than standard warranty by laws applicable for your country and HP has Care Packs, you can extend warranty with your money. Regards.

The window employed by the RUN ipconfig command appears and disappears in a fraction of a second (too short to read its content)

ipconfig /all yields te same result
ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt does not manage to write anything to the .txt file

On the other hand the command services.msc generates the nowmal window with information.

I am using a SONY VAIO Notebook model PCGGRT716S

Has anyone come across this problem?

A:Solved: ipconfig's window has a short life

you need to put

in the run window
that will keep the black DOS window open on the screen
then you can type commands

Despite the manufacturer's claim of 7 hours battery life on my Lenovo Ideapad 320S-14IKB - 81BN (S/N: MP1CHQTJ), I only get around 3-4 hours. This is with light usage, Reddit, a little bit of youtube etc. CPU usage was mostly around 0-5% the entire time. This was with the max CPU state in power settings reduced from 100% to 85%. However, I do have the screen at 100% brightness. As a different test, I tried doing (almost) nothing (apart from keeping the screen bright), and got 6 hours out of the battery. Is there a simple solution to increase this? It's only a 30 Wh battery (2 cell). Maybe in the future, a 60 Wh (4 cell?) one will come out for this model?

Was using my laptop last week and suddenly it shuts down. Checked the charger to make sure it was fully inserted into the computer, which it was. The computer was not showing an indicator lights for the charger or the power button. At this time no matter what I do I can not get any response from the computer.

Hey there,
Yes you read it correctly: I have just received mine, which I purchased because of battery life and overheating and fan noise issues on the Dell XPS 13 i7 7th gen. The 8th gen was supposed to have solved all the issues the previous version was plagued with...
Well... I unboxed it, loaded all of my softwares, installed all the WIndows updates, Dell drivers, you name it. Charged it and started using it. When I unplugged the power cord, first estimate was 4hrs on the Windows battery indicator. Then I installed BatteryBar to have a more reliable estimator. Same.
Later on, I discovered a very strong and very loud fan. Unsurprisingly, the underneath was burning hot.
Got the support team on the phone, whilst I was talking with them, the fan kicked in and I even could give them a glimpse of how loud that was over the phone.
Has any of the lucky owners of the XPS 13 i7 8th gen come across similar issues?
Sometimes, I am just baffled by the world there is between the promise and the reality....

A:XPS 13 8th gen i7 16GB RAM QHD+ Battery Issues 4hrs battery life tops

A brand new system may have an unusually high level of background tasks running simultaneously, such as Windows and other applications checking for and downloading updates, Windows monitoring your usage to optimize technologies such as PreFetch for your usage patterns, etc.  You might want to conduct a battery test after things have settled in a bit more.  The QHD+ display takes 2-3 hours off of the expected battery life, but you should still get 7-8 hours under normal use.  Then again, if you're heavy on WiFi and max out display brightness, you'll get less than that.  The fact that the fans are kicking on also suggests there's an unusually high level of background activity running, so check Task Manager to see if you can find out what's responsible for that.
