SB PCI128 on Win98SE - detected, then not detected - what the ...?

Q: SB PCI128 on Win98SE - detected, then not detected - what the ...?

I've been working on this off and on for a week or 2 - searching the net hi and lo, including this site, and can't come up w/anything, so I'm resorting to posting here...

I've just built this PC (configuration should be in sig), and installed Win98SE on it.

I have a SoundBlaster PCI 128 CT 4700 (w/ES1370 chip) that I bought off a friend. He didn't have the original CD w/drivers.

I've downloaded SEVERAL different "updated" drivers from various sources (including Creative), but nothing seems to work.

Here's what happens:

Start PC
Windows sees new hardware and starts installing drivers. About the same time another window pops up:

Creative Sound Blaster PCI128 Hardware not detected. The driver will be disabled.

Press OK, this reveals the window in the bg:

System Settings Change
To finish setting up your new hardware, you must restart your computer. Do you want to restart your computer now?

Click Yes...

1)cmos/whatever screens flash, then
2)Windows98 lite blue startup screen
3)then dos screen for a few seconds - I have installed LetAssign that lets my "Data drive" be called D, and the "Games drive" be called G, etc...
4)then big blue screen with "dos-like" text:
Creative Sound Blaster PCI128 Hardware not detected. The driver will be disabled. Press any key to continue

Press "any" key....

Windows continues to start up just fine.

DeviceMgr shows "Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI128" with yellow exclamation point -- status says "This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 24) Try upgrading the device drivers for this device."

The card is currently in PCI slot 6, but it has been in slot 2 and 5 before this with the same results.

Another friend borrowed the card and put it in his Win2000 machine and it worked just fine (he only had 1 or 2 PCI slots available) -- I have my graphics card in the AGP slot, and NOTHING else. (well, front and back USB ports).

One thing that I have tried is to look at the driver info and copy down all the files it listed. I then went to the Windows directories and renamed all those files so that it would not be able to find any of them. (I was afraid I had some files for drivers version X and some others for version Y....) Anyway, after that I was convinced I had a "clean" install, and noticed something: the mmdevldr.vxd file was NOT installed when installing new drivers, and in fact Windows complains about not being able to complete the installation b/c that file was missing. However it also did not COMPLAIN on startup about not finding the hardware, even though it was present as a device in the device manager. As soon as I renamed the mmdevldr.vxd file back to its original name, I got back to point A, can't find the hardware, device will be disabled.

ANY ideas? Any other info I can provide? Should I just try slots 3 and 4 as well? I don't think it's an IRQ conflict at this point, but I just don't know.

Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: SB PCI128 on Win98SE - detected, then not detected - what the ...?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hey all...my first post, so be gentle w/me!
I need to transfer a bunch of files etc from an old Gateway 200Mhz Pentium running Win98SE to my new Xp-Home PC, so I thought I'd get a 1G Memorex TravelDrive 2.0 to play around with.
Memorex says it's 'backward compatible' with the (no doubt) 1.1 ports on my machine...and supported with a 1.4meg driver for SE which I DL'ed, if that means anything.
It works fine on the XP system, but when I plug it into the Gateway after driver install/re-boot, it is not recognized in My Computer.
No lights, no Icon etc.
The driver seems to have installed OK, there is an 'Intel8237 PCI to USB Host' and a 'USB Root Hub' listed in System/Device Manager, both working OK according to SE, and I just flashed the latest BIOS from Gateway (released ca 1999 )
I've never connected anything to those USB ports ever, so I don't even know if they are alive....but is this do-able?
Any insight will be greatly appreciated.....

Today Norton Antivirus began to block threats from Trojan.Zeroaccess.B, Trojan.Gen, Trojan.Gen.2, and Trojan.Zeroaccess.C. I have been prompted to do a manual removal of Trojan.Zeroaccess!inf4 from c:\windows\system32\services.exe. Additionally, Bitcoinminer is being repeatedly detected, blocked and quarantined. I'm not sure if Norton is having a problem deleting/quarantining Bitcoinminer, or if it is actually being downloaded over and over. I suspect that these two problems are related, as they started at the same time.

From what I gather, the fix seems to be quite complicated and I would appreciate some help.

My system is running 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium w/ SP 1. Looking at similar threads, it looks like I'll need to use a flash drive to run removal tools. I do not currently have a flash drive on hand, but I do have an 4 GB SD card. Will that be a sufficient replacement?

It sounds like something is timing out.  It is hard to be sure without swapping either the drive or the MB.  You might go into the BIOS and select diagnostic mode for boot.  That would do a memory test and it might slow things down enough to mask the problem

Keyboard not detected, Mouse not detected. Fatal Error, System Halted.

That's what the system said, in DOS, on the black screen. Of course, I had my mouse and keyboard unplugged at the time, because I had just unplugged everything to move the computer.

Anyways, I plugged the keyboard and mouse in, restarted the computer, and everything started normally.

My question is, what is with this error? Vista can't boot up if I don't have a keyboard and mouse plugged in? It's not a big deal, but it seems like very odd behavior.

A:Keyboard not detected, Mouse not detected. Fatal Error, System Halted.

This has nothing to do with Vista whatsoever. As you said it showed up on the black screen with white text, which is the boot screen. The computer hasnt even started loading windows yet. The fatal eror occurs because you have no input device. The computer recognises this, and given that they are important, it puts a warning up that there is no connection.
It is completely normal, really, and whatever OS you have, its going to do the same thing.

I did a stupid thing yesterday. I downloaded an icon pack APK file on my computer to upload to my mobile. Anyway, the thing is, when I double clicked on it, BlueStacks (Android Emulator) opened up, and Avast started giving me lots of warnings about BlueStacks accessing Trojan URLs (it blocked them of course).
Now, the thing is: I scanned the APK file both in Malware Bytes Anti Malware and Avast (and even Malware Bytes Anti Rootkit), and it showed no virus or malware found. But when I try to attach the the same APK file as a Gmail attachment (which I read on the net detects viruses, which is why I tried it), Gmail gives me a "Virus found" error.
So, my question is how come such reliable antivirus / anti-malware programs like MBAM and Avast didn't detect the virus but Gmail did? And more importantly, (though I have deleted the APK file in question from my computer) is my computer safe? Or has a rootkit / trojan been installed?

A:Virus not detected in Avast & MBAM, but detected when I upload the file to Gmail

Hi guys,

I bought a bluetooth dongle off of amazon so I could use my bluetooth headset with my comp. Once plugged in it installs driver version 6.1.7601.17889 from microsoft and there are no yellow '?'s. When I look for devices it sees my headset no probs but will not connect, which it does instantly with phones / tablets etc.

A very detailed search has brought me to the conclusion that it's a problem with the bluetooth driver, not the headset. Unfortunately there are no identifiers on the dongle itself but device manager seems to think it's:

Device type: Bluetooth Radios
Manufacturer: Cambridge Silicon Radio Ltd

Is there anyway I can detect exactly the chipset in the dongle and get the correct drivers installed? Or am I barking up the wrong tree completely?

I should have came to this conclusion sooner, but my current re-installation of Windows has some problems that I haven't had the time to address until now. What I need, though, is access to the repair function on the disk. However, herein lies my problem...

When I boot up, media in the drive or no media, bios does not show the drive in its list. I can still open and close the drive as if nothing is wrong there, but I cannot "boot from CD". I've reset my bios back to defaults and while the drive appeared on IDE Channel 1 in the settings, it still would not recognize ANY media while booting up.

I have the latest version of my bios. I have also tried changing cables. The drive is on an IDE channel by itself.

Once my system boots into Windows, however, the drive is recognized and acts normally as if nothing happened in bios. Media operates fine. I have checked the event viewer, and there are no entries anywhere that states my optical drive has been experiencing problems, and yes, in fact it operates just like it always does.

Can anyone help me get my bios and cdrom back together again? The problem is I just do not know where to start to solve this. I wish I could say how long this has been happening, but I really don't know as of today. There have been no hardware changes in the past three months, and my current installation and configuration began back in late April.

Thanks for your time...

A:CD/DVDROM drive - not detected by bios, detected by Windows?

What is the boot sequence in the bios? should be CD or optical drive first, then Hard Drive or IDE-0 second if you want to boot from the cd-drive. Many computer manufacturers set the computer to automatically boot off of the hard drive by default so setting the factory defaults might not be what you are looking for. Look for the screen that has the boot order or sequence and just change it, exit and save settings and restart the computer with the boot cd in the drive. I hope that helps.

A scan by TrendMicro picked up several infections, most of which it was able to clean up. But it wasn't able to remove PAR_SE.50425 and PAR_SE.50426. It also says I have a (MS05-004) ASP.NET Path Validation Vulnerability (887219), even though I have automatic Microsoft security updates. The first several minutes of a PandaScan (I didn't have time to finish it) found some SearchMeUp adware.

I went to connect today and my dialup connection was gone.  I thought, well, I'll recreate it....but Windows would not let me and said (in the Connect to a Network box):  "Windows could not detect a dialup modem", "Is the modem connected?", "is the modem switched on?"
It is an internal modem.
I went to Device Manager, and there it is as usual, "This device is working properly".

A:Dialup modem detected, but not detected, huh?

Doing some searching gave me this solution:
It is caused by certain services being shut off for unknown reasons.... definitely unknown in my case (??).
Delete or rename the following folder:
(the folder, rtbackup)
However, it has some kind of protection and doesn't allow itself to be so changed.  I did it from a DOS boot disk with NTFS4DOS.
Everything is working.

Hello, I recently bought a Probook 450 G4, i7 7500U with 1 TO HDD and 8GB RAM. I wanted to upgrade it with an SSD so I bought a ADATA Premier SP550 2280 M.2 SSD. The BIOS detected it normally, but windows installer wouldn't find it. I removed the HDD and tried again, same issue. I then installed windows 10 on the HDD to try and format the SSD in windows and surprise! no sign of the SSD nowhere, not in browser nor in Disk Managment or Diskpart. Apparently HP disabled the M.2 port in BIOS as mentioned here ( https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/M-2-SSD-Upgrade/m-p/5580822#M3... ) I updated the BIOS the the latest version provided by HP for my laptop model and the same issue is still ongoing, this is a 120$ SSD that I can't use nor return as the problem is the HP product not ADATA's SSD! The simplest solution is in the hands of HP, just release a BIOS update with the M.2 port ENABLED ! why brag about having a M.2 port in your products and then DISABLE it ?! Any insights please ? Many Thanks. PS: I started a new thread yesterday and it is no longer available now ! did HP remove it or what ? it was there for a while and I'm sure! what a shame !

I picked up a computer off craiglist was thoroughly enjoying my gtx geforce 680 ( https://boston.craigslist.org/sob/sys/6239989909.html ) when it "crashed" about 6 hours after purchase. When I rebooted I received the "no hard disk detected" message. Upon launching bios setup the hard drive is listed with details as being attached to its corresponding sata port. I am trying to determine if my hard drive is broken or if it needs remounting or some other sort of procedure.

The hard drive is a slightly dated WD Carver 1 TB SATA internal drive interacting with an asus motherboard. I did notice the boot order for drives had been rearranged putting an external and an optical disk drive in position 1 and 2 for boot directories. I disabled both the external and optical disc and selected the WD sata drive as the first preference for booting. Still I am getting the same error. I read somewhere that if the bios is recognized in setup but is still not recognized for booting that I may need to run a 32bit diagnostic. The forum I saw the diagnostic post mentioned on was in reference to a dell machine. I don't really know what this is or if it exists on my ASUS mother board.

In short: how can I tell If my hard drive needs replacement?

If Bios recognizing the drive is sign of life how can I get my computer to recognize this drive again?

My laptop has suddenly started running CHKDSK during startup. After it completes and finishes booting I go to Properties > Tools > Error Checking of my C drive and click ?Check?. It says errors were found on this drive and to repair drive now to prevent data loss. I click to run it, the system reboots, I see the prompt to cancel CHKDSK by pressing any key, let it run, the screen remains blank with just the little spinning dots. It finishes (in less than a minute, which is faster than it usually takes) and loads to desktop. I check the C drive properties again and it still says there are errors and to repair.

Running CHKDSK from CMD prompt I get ?Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems. No further action is required.? Running a 3rd-party disk checker (Disk Doctor, Tune-Up Utilities) also reports no errors. Yet the properties dialog continues to warn that there are errors.

I can?t be certain when this started. Just noticed this yesterday when I booted up (I don?t usually stick around and watch the computer boot). Windows has all the latest updates/patches. This is an HP ENVY laptop that came with Windows 10 pre-installed.

Anyone have any ideas?

I CANNOT connect to the web - Juno says that there is no modem installed. Upon further investigation, when I go to Connections and try to add a new connection, I am not allowed a choice of using a modem.

So - Device Manager and Juno E-mail both think that the modem works fine. Connection Wizard and Juno WWW both think that no modem exists.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem, to no avail. Oh, and yes, it used to work, and I can't get the user to remember a specific time when it stopped working.

My Kingston Data
Traveller 8 GB drive (1 yr old) is not getting detected on my new PC (2 weeks old). It was working perfectly on my old pc, and is working fine on my office PC, frnd's PC, Philips DVD player, Sony HiFi audio system.

My mobo is Biostar TA785GE 128M, OS is win xP Pro 32 bit. The drive is detected on all USB ports of mobo, but as soon as I start any data transfer, it crashes and i get error that data cannnot be transfered.

The Disk Management (My Computer - Manage) shows the drive as healthy, but after I start any file transfer, in a few seconds, it reads "Unreadable". Sometimes, the drive letter also goes missing. In brief, the drive is displayed in My Computer till any file transfer is initiated. As soon as any file trnsfr starts, I get error that file transfer is not complete and the drive goes missing.

My frnd's UsB drive (2 GB), and my old 256 mb drive, both work and files are transferred which removes the doubt that there is some prob in USB ports. As the 8gb pen drive works on other PCs and devices, so i guess the drive is okay. I ran HDtune for it, and it has no bad sectors. That leaves my OS as the culprit (I assume). Looks like there is some problem in the way XP maps the USB drive.

My computer is set up with a dual boot with Windows 98SE on drive C: and XP SP2 on drive D: (two separate drives). I have not used Win98SE for years and have the Boot.ini set up to boot XP after 3 seconds. I would like to do a clean install of another XP on my C: drive to replace the 98SE, but I'm afraid it might screw everything up, especially since this was originally set up with 98SE installed first. Is there a way to do this? I have read a couple of articles on turning a dual boot system into a single boot system, but should I do this first and then install the second XP (on drive C:)? (The main reasons that I want to have two XP systems on my computer is that the current one has gotten so cluttered that I would like to start over, but not lose what I already have; and I would like to try out installing SP3, but don't want to take a chance on messing up my current XP. A clean install to replace the Win98SE would solve this.) I have read all of the threads in this forum on dual booting so I know it is possible to have a dual boot to 2 XP operating systems, but haven't found anything that addresses my situation with replacing Win98SE. Thanks for any help you can give.

Q: PCI128

I have a Celeron 300 w/128megs w98. mobo is ABIT BH6. SB PCI128. 24x at first then 50x cd. Plays music fine. Reads data fine. Got cd disc from New Horizons for CBT on Win95 - requires 486, 16mb, 4x cdrom,16bit sound card. Works fine. Then got A+ CBT from New Horizons - it requires 8bit processor, 100mhz pentium, w95/98, 16meg ram, Sound Blaster II compatible 16bit 22.050Khz mono fidelity, 5mb hd space.

The w95 cd works fine, no hiccups. The A+ cd shows the visual ok but the sound comes out like its underwater. I've replaced the cd disc and get the same results. Replaced the drive from 24x to 50x. Same results. The cd works in my 486 w/old SB Vibra. What do I have set wrong? I'm sure its a simple switch but I can't figure out which one. have reloaded drivers - can't remember if I downloaded new ones or not (downloaded several things while working on changing drives out. Any ideas appreciated. TIA

If sound works ok in everything else, you don't have anything set wrong.

They have something programmed incorrectly - it is made to work on a much older system, so it may not be able to work correctly on a faster one.

I would go to www.soundblaster.com/drivers though, and get the latest drivers. It won't hurt, and it may help.

In my uninstall list I had a creative pci something-or-other, and accidentally picked it to uninstall. Whatever it was, was in a folder called SBPCI.

Whenever I boot up, windows detects a "PCI multimedia audio device" but won't accept the drivers from my soundblaster CD to use them. i've also tried the driver's from soundblaster's website and the updated drivers as well. no good. It says these are not the drivers for your hardware, or something to the effect.

I tried to run the installation program from the CD. When it does so, it detects a "pci multimedia audio device" as well, but wont accept its own drivers for the hardware neither. "There are no drivers currently installed for soundblasterpci128. Installation process aborted."

This really sucks, I cant play a game without sound.

What am I missing here? I even tried to manually select a "sound, joystick, etc"--->creative--->soundblaster pci128 (also tried soundblaster pci128 legacy) but then it says "Could not detect hardware, windows will not load drivers for soundblaster pci128".

Help, please?

PS: I have no idea what was in that folder. Any ideas?

A friend wants to use an old Windows machine (98 SE) for wireless internet. I completely re-installed Windows 98. After some McAfee and other stuff I installed the wireless LAN software. First it worked fine. I have the icon on the lower right bottom, I can access internet (signal is weak though). Then I noticed that the sound card didn't work. Probably a driver problem, but after downloading the drivers I could not install them ('no sound card present, please install card'). The sound card used to work. I had an other sound card (SB PCI128), so I plugged that one in. Windows detected the sound card and installed the drivers. Now the sound card is working but the wireless LAN isn't. The wireless LAN utility pops up briefly, but that disappears again. Icon is also gone. My friend re-installed the drivers for the wireless LAN and for a moment the wireless LAN worked again. But not anymore. Soundcard is working properly. Any idea? Is it an IRQ conflict? I thought the wireless LAN (USB stick) doesn't use IRQ...

Is this the main drive that you are trying to install Windows on?
If so, you may need to download the Dos Sata Drivers from your Motherboard's (or computer manufacture's) support driver page

Is this an extra HardDrive (ie Slave) that you are setting up in your computer?
If so you may need to inialize the Drive by going to Disk Management in Control Panel (under Administrative tools)

Probably more info required

A:Help, IDE Not Detected?

It could be a bad sector which houses a vital part of the Laster Boot Record or maybe the disk has become unmountable. Either way, an answer lies within your XP CD, assuming you have one.

Pop it in and if it doesn't run first time, restart and tap Delete to Function 2 on startup to access the BIOS menu, then seek out the Boot Order or Boot Sequence and change it to CD first. Save the changes and exit (usually Function 10) and you should see a message to "Hit and key to boot from CD". Do that and the file copy process runs through. Press Function 8 when prompted to accept the terms of the EULA. At the enxt stall of the screen, select R for Repair and you will be offered the choice of which system to repair. Usually it's Number 1 so type 1 and press Enter. When the Command Prompt appears, type chkdsk /r, hit Enter and wait while a five stage process runs.

Then at the next prompt, type fixmbr and hit Enter. Accept the warning and when that completes, type fixboot and hit Enter again. One more warning and you can type exit to leave the system and restart.

Hopefully, it will work - if not post back for details of curing the unmountable disk.

Hello, I recently bought a new Probook 450 G4, it came with Freedos and a 1 TB HDD, I7 7500U and 8GB RAM, I wanted to install my OS directly on an M.2 SSD so I made sure my laptop has the M.2 slot and  I bought one, I chose the ADATA Premier SP550 M.2 2280 (240 GB) which seems great. I inserted the SSD in the specified port along with the HDD which I intended to leave for storage, switched the computer on and checked on the BIOS and the SSD was there, I then booted from a Windows 10 UEFI USB and this is when I noticed that the SSD is not listed in the windows installer menu, only the HDD was there. I searched in the internet, disabled secure boot and made sure everything in the BIOS is well configured, except for the AHCI moe which is not available for modification as it is configured by default in HP BIOS (according to intenet). I opened DiskPart and the SSD was not there too. I then removed the HDD and left the SSD only, in the windows installer I could only see the USB (from which I'm booting) and an empty drive with no allocated space and showing all values at 0. I finally decided to install windows on HDD and then format the SSD in windows as proposed by some, but windows could not load the SSD in the file browser, nothing in the Disk Manager too, it only lists the HDD and CD ROM! so my M.2 SSD is not showing up anywhere, can it be dead ? the guy I bought it from said he already installed it on 3 ASUS ROG c... Aside from the fact that you should have updated to SP3 already, it's likely a hardware fault.

Do that, then let the compuiter boot without the drive once.

Then while up and running, reconnect the drive. Vista is better than absolutely any other OS, as regards properly detecting new devices.
