Windows 7 Power settings keeps reverting back to [ Balanced Plan ]...

Q: Windows 7 Power settings keeps reverting back to [ Balanced Plan ]...

I been noticing lately that every time I open my power settings in the control panel, it shows the "Balanced Plan" ticked despite the fact that I've changed it to "High Performance" several times in the last month. Another thing that concerns me is that usually whenever you make any changes to settings, the "Save" button at the bottom of the page is supposed to be highlighted or (in other words: able to be ticked) but every time I visit my power settings through the control panel, the Save button is never highlighted, so I can't even click on Save even if I wanted to.

I usually just exit the control panel explorer once I made the changes I want, but as I mentioned it seems to just revert right back to the Balanced Plan option upon re-opening of the Power Settings. Maybe the fact that I cannot click the Save Button is the problem.

The only thing I can think of which may ( or may not have ) caused this problem is the fact that I was making several tweaks to the system using the Advanced management options, mostly to shut off options that I didn't need to have running, and to tighten my overall system security, etc, but I don't specifically recall ever coming across an option that would restrict me making changes to the Power settings. In fact, if I did find something like that through Advanced Management options, I would have made sure that "High Performance" was the option I wanted to keep.

The changes I did make were quite some time ago, so I guess its possible that I may have forgotten making any changes relative to this problem but if that is not the cause, then maybe there is a registry adjustment/correction that can be made, but of that I'm not too sure.

Any insight into this issue would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I know this is a custom build, but do you have any manufacturers power utilities installed?

Some temp software (if installed) will slow down your pc when temps run high, changing the power plan.

Good day everyone!

I just had my laptop install Windows 8.1 tonight. It's a clean install, by the way. Now the problem is I noticed that every time I restart my laptop it's power plan reverts back to "power saver", I had it set on "high performance" before. I own a Samsung laptop, model is NP535U3C-A01, Series 5.

Processor: AMD A6-4455
Memory: 8 GB
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 7500G

Oh and one more thing... it stops charging at 99%.

A:Power plan settings keeps on reverting back after restart

There may be some specific power drivers and software for that particular laptop, look on their website in the support section for device drivers and support programs.

Usually Samsung and Toshiba laptops will have some kind of special power software, so you would have to download that and set the power settings in that software otherwise it will keep on reverting every time you reboot.

Hello,
After recently upgrading the CPU in my OptiPlex 9010 AIO, I have been unable to restore the default settings for the balanced power plan. I have already tried using the "Restore default settings for this plan" button, Windows 10 trouble shooter, and the command prompt, but none have worked. I'm sure a "Reset this PC" would do the trick, but I really don't want to do that for such a minor issue. Does anyone know what the default settings are for "Turn off the display" and "Put the computer to sleep"? Also what is the default brightness level? It is currently set at 60%, but I think I remember the display being considerably brighter than that.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum

I, use the balanced plan. There is not that much of a difference, in my opinion. If you want to speed up your computer, we can give good recommendations.

But, don't go by my opinion, give each power plan a try yourself. If you still cannot decide, pose a specific question and you will have the cooperation of every member.

Wish you the best.

Hi all,
I have a Toshiba Satellite P50-B-10V (PSPNUE) laptop. After Windows 10 installed the Fall Creators Update, my laptop heats up and fan is always running when I select the Balanced power plan. If I turn off the Intel Turbo Boost technology from UEFI settings, then things are a little better (i.e. 70 degrees Celsius rather than 80+). The problem is that high temperature and fan usage is there, even when I do nothing at all. After I select the eco power plan, things return to normal (i.e. temperature below 50 degrees Celsius and no fan usage).
Does anyone else has the same problem? Do you know of a solution?
Thanks
George

Hi,
I have a recent DELL laptop:
Inspiron 7000 (Inspiron 17 7778 2-in-1),
Core i7, 16 Gb RAM, 128 GB SSD + 1TB HD...
Not a lot of programs and lots of space available.
In the last few months I have had a lot of poor performance issues. I finally figured out it is related to Windows 10 Power Plan. When set to "Power Saver", the performance is awful. The CPU is maxed to 0.80 GHz. So when browsing the net or looking at my picture gallery, the computer hangs, and it becomes impossible to use. If I change the plan to high performance, the computer behaves normally - fast!
And even if I change the plan to another plan (i.e. High Perf), the next time I restart or wake-up the computer, the "Power Saver" power plan is set back... Very frustrating. And as shows the image, it is not the "bolded" option in the list. What can be changing constantly that parameter??
I contacted DELL chat support and they asked me to re-install Windows! There is probably a better way to fix this. It looks to me as a DELL Driver conflicting with Windows. Also, my mother has an older DELL laptop on Windows 10 and she experiences the same issue...
Any help would be very appreciated!
Cheers,
Jean-Daniel

I am using SP2 for the first time. I went to a site to download fonts. The new SP2 controls added another press of a button prior to the actual download of every font I downloaded. So I clicked the remember settings for this file type option, then clicked SAVE. After that one downloaded, every other one skipped the save process, and went straight to OPEN. Had I opened the file I clicked remember...... I would have understood why. I went thru my internet options and changed a couple of things, even restored the default options. Nothing. Any ideas as to how I can get the files to save rather than to open?
Note: Right clicking every single time I download something is NOT an option. I already know how to do that. I want to know how to left click and THEN I have the option to open or save.
Thanks in advance!

The touchpad settings for my X1 Yoga keeps reverting back to the previous setting, no matter how many times I change it and save it. Why is this happening?  The two changes I want to keep that keeps reverting back, are these: 1) Have the middle button behave as a middle-button (instead of for scrolling) 2) Have the scrolling direction on the touchpad act normally (no reverse direction).  I had changed those settings when I first got the X1 Yoga, but then soon I chanced it again to what I want it to be now, but ever since then, those settings just won't stay and keeps reverting back to the first change I made, and it's been weeks and weeks. No matter how many times I change them and save, they only last until I close the lid. The next time I open the lid, they've reverted back.

I browsed the forums before deciding to ask my question and didn't find anything that fully addressed my problem.

My uncle installed Windows 7 onto my computer, creating a Windows.old file. It had Windows XP before, as the factory installed OS (no disc). I am now trying to revert back to Windows XP (why is not important). However, I am having some issues:

1) When I boot and select "Earlier Version of Windows" as the OS to start with, I am taken to a screen that requires I enter an admin password. The problem is that we do not have an admin password for Windows XP. As far as I know, one never existed. I was never prompted to enter one when starting the comp, and my husband is the one who set it up and he said he never had one.

2) When I attempt to do a factory settings restore through Windows 7 by pressing F8, I am asked to locate a system image. I don't know what that means really, except that it's a copy of the existing comp info and am not sure if the Windows.old folder is what I'm looking for. If so, that's another problem because it won't accept Windows.old.

3) I do not have any recovery points beyond, like, yesterday. Apparently my uncle set it so that older recovery points are deleted to make room for new ones. Awesome.

Hi,

I'm running Win7Pro 64bit in a Tecra R840 laptop. My power planning regarding LCD brightness is 40% if running on batery and 100% if plugged in.

The problem is that, for some reason, I can't keep these settings and Windows (?) change it to 40% on batery and plugged in. Example: I change settings to 100% if plugged in (and my laptop is plugged in). The brightnes is at 100%. Then I shut down and start with batery. Brightness is 40%. Everything ok until now...but if I plugged in again the brightness will stay at 40% and if I go to power options I can see that the plugged in option changed to 40%!!!!

Any help will be appreciated.

From Windows 98SE/2000/XP SP3 I always set my power settings as always on/never shut down (hard drive always on) with the exception of turn off display after 10 mins. Both my PCs are on for about 16-20 hrs each day and I always shut them down manually every night.

Now in Windows 7, I created a custom plan that basically more or less similar to the above, always on/never shut down/never sleep, turn off hard drive after 10000 mins (basically never off) except to turn off display after 10 mins.........well, last night I thought of trying out the "Balanced" (recommended) plan....and after 30 mins of inactivity, both my PC were off/shut down and I had to press the power/on buttons on both my PCs to bring them back (cause clicking the mouse/pressing any key on the KB wouldn't bring them back), is this normal or the way the Balanced plan supposed to work?

What's your or how you set your Power Options/Power plan settings on your Windows 7?

Thanks in advance.

A:Power Options/Power plan settings?

Balanced does turn your hdd and things off after 30 minutes(put it to sleep). Just go in there and change all the sleep things to never, or set them to 0 minutes. After you select your new plan, make sure your screensaver is on as well.

I have a laptop that for some reason when i close the lid the usb shut off and i believe this is due to the usb power settings in the device manager say that the system can turn them off to save power. So when i close the lid the usb shut off. But if i change that setting and tell it not to turn off to save power they work fine.

I am setting this setting on the USB Root Hubs but when i reboot they revert back to being checked off to save power. Any ideas why this may be reverting back to the original state?

A:USB Power Settings Reverting

1.) Open Power Options in control panel.
2.) Click on Change Plan Settings in whatever plan you're using.
3.) Click on "Change Advanced Power Settings".
4.) Expand "USB Settings".
5.) Click on "USB selective suspend setting".
6.) Select Disable
7.) Click OK
8.) Test to see if it still reverts the USB hub's power settings.

Hi, I am having trouble with the Power Plan Settings. The default settings were not what I wanted so I have tried to change them several times. I chose NEVER, on all options, saved them and even rebooted a couple times. The settings in Ctrl Panel stay at what I changed them to but the computer does not recognize them. It continually goes to sleep, display goes down after 1 minute of being idle.

I tried contacting the Live Chat, explained my issues, told her what I had already done, and now was contacting them. She didn't ask me any questions other than what I had done to troubleshoot and sent me to a link that explains what I already knew and done several times. No help at all...I've been searching for help on the net and finally found this forum. I am hoping that someone here has had the same issues and knows what I can do. It also won't accept my change requiring a password when I sign into the computer. I don't want to have to sign in. changed that to NO, but it still requires a password.

I also made sure my windows has all the updates.

Thanks for any help. Nothing worse than reading in an idle mode only to have the screen go down after 1 minute, requiring I sign back in..

Hello,

Sorry to bother, could someone please help out?

My computer has gotten slowly all of a sudden during the last 2 weeks.

It takes several minutes when trying to open/rename/copy/move/deletes folders/files, and even longer when emptying the recycle bin. Same goes with opening some programs especially FireFox & Winamp.

I also keep getting this message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" It crashes every time I try to play certain videos, copying or moving files.

For the last couple years, I kept getting the message "Your system is low on virtual memory" My current memory is 256MB of RAM, I will buy another bar of RAM soon, still it's not an excuse for the sudden slowness, especially when I don't have powerful programs that requires the upgrade.

I have scanned with SpySweeper and Panda, both detected malware, unfortunately no fixing was done since both require payment to do so.

I scanned then with Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG and fixed whatever they found.

I do have a log of Panda and screencap of SpySweeper, so if HJT log fails to be useful, I will provide the other 2 logs if requested.

I hope I provided enough information, and many thanks for taking the time to help out!

Alright, I'm using this Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971760/

I have the windows.old folder on my HD, everything intact, but when I type and of the commands, it tells me it cannot find the file specified. I know they're there. ;_;

I'm going to cry.

A:Reverting back to XP via windows.old.

Step 3 says that if you receive that message to move on to step 4 as follows:

Step 4: Copy the contents or move the contents of the Windows.old folder
Note When you type one or more of the commands at the command prompt in the following steps and press ENTER, you may receive the following message:
The system cannot find the file specified.
If you receive this message, go to the next step in this section, and then type the command in that next step.

Type the following commands at the command prompt:
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y c:\windows.old\windows c:\
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y "c:\windows.old\program files" c:\
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y c:\windows.old\users c:\
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y “c:\windows.old\documents and settings” c:\
And, it looks like if you get that same message again, you're supposed to move on to step 5. Its confusing for sure but it looks like you have to figure out exactly where the .old file is supposed to be and get it there if needed. Without seeing or knowing more that's my best guess.

DMcD65 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! You said you "wiped" the laptop, so any Recovery information is long gone. Your only recourse at this point is to use something known as HP Recovery Media. HP Recovery Media is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks. You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded. You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/driversOnce there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click "Update". If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click the "+" symbol to expand that entry and click on Order Media for details.Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlNOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while! If you have trouble finding a ... I have a laptop bought nine years ago, now running Windows 10 Home version 1903. It is only used when there is a problem with my desktop computer, or when a portable PC is needed. It was originally using Windows 7 but with the present operating system it is almost unusably slow, with boot up 2 mins. 40 seconds and loading imaging software nearly three minutes ? there is only one program loaded at startup ? defender (msconfig). I have the Windows 7 original product serial number and an OEM copy of Windows 7 ? is it possible to revert without buying a new copy of Windows 7, it would then presumably be much quicker ? the lack of future fixes would be acceptable. Or maybe there is a way to make it go faster in Windows 10?

Last year I got windows 7, and installed it on my computer. My computers performance went way down. I have a 2000 HP with upgraded ram and graphics, and a new fan. It was stupid to upgrade, but i was naive. My computer didnt come with discs for windows xp, and I have no way to revert back. Is there any way to go back to XP from windows 7?

We will need the HP model ID found on a label on the back of a tower type or underneath a laptop type.

Take a look here for help locating the model

A:reverting from Windows 10 back to 7

I upgraded to Windows 10 on July 30th from Win7.
Before I did I cloned my Win7 disk to another spare drive.
I periodically boot into that drive and after a few minutes it tries to Upgrade to Win10 and fails. I want it to stop doing that.
It probably fails because the upgrade files in the download folder are corrupt.
I have uninstalled KB3035583 and hidden it.
How do I stop Windows 7 from trying to upgrade to Windows 10?
I already called Windows Support and they were no help and they had no problems with me running Windows 7 and Windows 10 on the same machine as long as I didn't run them both at the same time (how could I?).

I am working with Windows 7, and I am trying to revert back to IE7, I have tried reseting thru the tool menu and going to internet options and reseting, but that does not not work!

Tried reinstalling IE7 but error came up saying IE7 is not supported on this operating system.

Also tried turning off IE8 so it would revert back to IE7, but after restarting there is no internet browser available at all.

any suggestions!

thank you

A:troubleshooting reverting back to IE7 in windows 7

IE7 is not compatible with Win7. Windows 7 came with IE8, so you can't go backwards.

If you are having compatibility issues, you can click the little "broken page" next to the URL in the address bar and refresh the page, or you can download a different browser to see if it's an IE issue.

Of course you can also upgrade to IE9 as well.

Is a revert back to windows vista from windows 7 WHILE still keeping your files and settings possible?

I need to do this as i cant dual boot because Vista wont let me shrink my 286GB partition past 9GB.

A:Reverting back to Vista from Windows 7

Did you install Windows 7 in a dual boot setup or installed Windows 7 over Windows Vista?

You need to backup your files in C:\Users\<username> and and other settings to an external hard disk or CD/DVD. Then you can reformat the drive and reinstall Vista.

Usually settings can be transferred from an old OS to a new OS or from the same OS but not backwards from a new OS to an old OS due. In this case I would say no.

You can back up files such as documents, pictures, email, music and so on but not settings, they will have to be done from scratch

Hello Everyone,

I have successfully installed an Android Skin Pack. I did a system restore before the installation though. However, since I didn't like the details much, I used a System Restore and reverted the settings. Some of the icons are left and I want to revert them back to its usual state. I hope you can support me regarding this matter.

Thank you and Good Day!

Welcome to Seven Forums neirudokuro. I'd suggest running the System File Checker:

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

This will of course also disable all 3rd party themes until you repatch your system. A Guy

Hi to all forum members. I have just now upgraded my Windows 7 Acer Aspire 5542G laptop to Windows 10. I do know that I can revert back to Windows 7 and then re-activate Windows 10 at a later date. My question is, if I do revert back to Windows 7 then do a factory reset on my laptop back to factory settings, would I still be able to re-activate to Windows 10 at a later date?
regards, Ron

Positively yes.

Once you have windows 10 installed and activated, you have the Digital Entitlement. That is good for the life of your computer.
Going back to Win 7 and factory reset makes no difference. (Provided you do not change motherboard.)
You are still entitled to re-install Windows 10 in the same computer any time you want and as often as you want.
There is no time restriction as to when you want to re-install.

I'm using Windows XP SP2 and with the classic interface style. For some reason, though, Windows reverts back to the XP style whenever I reboot. I've checked my startup programs (both in startup menu and registry/RUN) but it's all clean there. What could be causing this problem?

One thing to note: only the style gets reverted on reboot, all the other interface appearance settings (font size, window color, desktop background, menu animation, etc.) remain intact.

TIA

Hi all,
I upgraded; no, downgraded to Windows 10 - I guess you get what you pay for.

2 Days later I downgraded but with a clean install of my Win 8.1 Pro. In the updates it still installed the KB "important" update even though I hid it. After reboot the rotten icon was back again - that hamburger thing - so I uninstalled the KB 303 cannot remember the rest, but the icon is gone and no gmx.exe is on my system

Is there a way via regedit to stop it ever doing it again? I might upgrade when it no longer looks like a beta version and bugs are ironed out, but at the moment I loathe it with a vengeance.

Am I the only one who likes windows 8.1 and the metro screen? I find it useful across devices for the work I do.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any answers

A:Will Windows 10 Upgrade After Reverting Back To Win 8.1

Just hide the update if it shows up in updates again. You have to delete the GWX folder, if the Uninstall does not remove it.

Hi, I've been reading a lot the last few hours about the Free Windows 10 upgrade for Windows 7 & 8.1 users, but so far no one has answered the question about downgrading if there's problems or if you just don't like it....

So, if I upgrade to Windows 10 when it's released, and find I can't get along with can and I then uninstall it and re-install Windows 7 with my original licence key?

Hi,
Here at work we need to set a particular DNS addresses for our internet to work.
All of our computers' network adapters have the Obtain IP address automatically checked, and use the following DNS servers:
122.49.191.252
122.49.191.253
(Adam internet, for those of you in Adelaide )
However, there is one particular Windows 8 Laptop that no matter what we do, reverts back to "get the DNS automatically." which makes the internet not work on there.
What is bizzare is that during the morning and day it is OK and around 5PM it starts to cut off. Not sure if this has anything to do with peak users or Adam Internet but that is beside the point.

How can we fix this TCP/IP properties issue?
We run it off a dynadock so initially I thought it was that adapter somehow reverting back to original setting, But I tried the DNS setting on the onboard adapter and also the WiFi adapter, and they all go back to automatic setting, as soon as you click OK and Close.

Please help!
Thanks

A:TCP/IP setting on windows 8 reverting back to automatic

My initial thought is (and I've just woken up so...) it's a piece of software that's being run or is running in the background that is resetting the DNS information.

have you tried running it in safe mode , setting the DNS in the period you usually have issues and see if then resets back ?

and Photo Gallery shuts down after a few minutes . I've tried to un-install and re-install Windows Essentials but it wont un-install.

A:WinXP Reverting back to Windows classic???

Unzip the following file to your desktop. Then double click on the .reg file and at the prompt, allow it to merge into the registry. That should restore the XP style theme.

Hi everyone-

After backing up my files from Vista, I
Installed Win 7 Ultimate six weeks ago.

Since then, I had to use "System Restore" about five times. The issue is that sometimes on booting, my HP desktop reverts back to "freshly installed version of Win7".

All my files , photos, bookmarks, etc are gone, so I have to use
system restore to a 'Windows Update' date.

This happened yesterday, even after booting Win 7 okay
at first, the numbers lock came on, I turned it off, and the computer reverted back to a new install of Win 7 again.

I had no problems as this with Vista.

Can anyone help me?

A:Windows 7 keeps reverting back to fresh install!

You can not do a fresh install of windows 7 unless you are using the disc, what do you mean by a fresh install,do you mean when system restore has complete all your files and settings have gone from what they were/?

Hi there @Ankush_Nirwan,  Welcome to the HP Support Community where you can ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and wanted to reach out to you.  When you go to the Control Panel into Power Plan Properties, under the plans already there, you should see Show additional plans. If you were to click the drop down arrow on the right, you should see more power plans.  Do you see the Balanced Power plan now? If not, you can make a balanced power plan yourself and Manage your Power Options. You will also see that you can use the Power troubleshooter to fix problems as well.  Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating. It may be that you need to do driver updates also.  Please also do your Windows Updates.  Was the Balanced power mode there recently? If so, you could do a System Restore to a date when you did have that Power Plan as an option.  Please let me know if I answered your question by clicking the 'Thumbs up'. If the troubleshooting steps in this post resolved the issue for you, please click the 'Accept as Solution' button. This will allow others who have the same issue to find the solution also.If you require further assistance, I would b... Read more

Hi,

Despite "turn hard disk after" set to 10 minutes (or less for testing) in Power Options, HDDs won't turn off at all. They used to until yesterday. I have made no changes to the system only updated NVidia driver, but I can't tell if the issue started after update or not.

I've checked disk activity via performance monitor and there is small (approx. 100kb/sec), but constant activity on drive C: which is SSD. Most of it comes from System PID4. Again, I am not sure if this is causing the issue.

Any help would be appreciated. I am super sensitive to sound and HDD not being turned off makes me very tired in very short time.

Thank you.
